  • Who knew that in the south central part of Brazil, there is a thriving Ukrainian immigrant community?! Prudentopolis is a city of only 50,000 people, but 75% of the people there have Ukrainian heritage. Join me on this amazing adventure of seeing how the town's community spirit is keeping Ukrainian traditions alive. Especially with everything going on in Ukraine right now, it was especially touching to see Ukrainian culture thrive in a place you might not expect. If you would like to support Ukraine, please donate to the fundraiser attached with this video or directly to the Ukrainian charities listed below:

I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. It can be said that Brazil works as a back-up of several cultures from other countries, as a kind of "Noah's ark". So much so that several years ago some Japanese researchers came to Brazil after a dialect of the island of Okinawa that was spoken in the Liberdade neighborhood in São Paulo and that was no longer spoken even on the island itself.

You know, once i was robbed here, i had 17 yo at that time, they took my shoes haha, a Asics show that was awesome indeed. Back then i was very pissed (we say here PUTO), e became PUTO. Furious at that time but then I realized: oh, we don't have natural disasters, people say all the time here 'god bless you' 'stay with god' 'god bless ya'....
Brazil is the most nice place for your Awakening!
You will be challenge indeed but it's like, i dont know, this place is just perfect for ego dissolution

Its not really assimilation for that implies becoming part of something else. The people of Prudentopolis may have forgotten their original language but they’ve done an impressive job of keeping alive their culture, traditions and religion in Brazil. Acculturation has worked out for them as it has for so many immigrants who settled in the country. If you search diligently, there are many such immigrant communities in Brazil from Europe and around the world. Thanks for your sentimental video of the Ukrainian community in Brazil’s Parana state!

I am ethnic Ukrainian born in Russia. My ancestors were deportated from Poltavshchyna and Zaporizhia (Ukraine) to Siberia (Russia). I got goosebumps when guy was showing folk clothes from Poltava region. It is astounding and sorrowful at the same time to see that our people were scattered all around the globe. I am glad to see ethnic Ukrainians in Brazil are free to preserve Ukrainian culture without fear of being persecuted. Thanks for your reportage, Alina. Як то кажуть нашого цвiту по всьому свiту

Nice video. Prudentópolis is not the only city from Paraná state that received massive imigration from Ukraine in the late 19th/ early 20th century, but all the central/southern cities of the state. Not only linked to the agriculture, but with the construction of the ambitious São Paulo-Rio Grande railway. My ancestors (family names Maksymyv, Pasternak, Leszko, Dmyterko) imigrated from somewhere unknow in Halych/Ukraine to Mallet-Paraná. Jaguariaíva, Mallet, Irati, Ponta Grossa, União da Vitória, cities from 30k~300k inhabitants. That's why whe have 600k descendants of Ukranian heritage int Brazil, almost all in Paraná.

I agree. Especially in less developed countries like Brazil, cities just grow in a rather chaotic way it's just not pretty. The best of Prudentopolis is for sure in the countryside, it's idyllic, gorgeous and with hidden natural wonders in its canyons where you'll find many many huge waterfalls in the middle of lush tropical forest whereas at the top you see the Araucarias, Brazil's own pine tree.
