With the Filter feature in Google Sheets you can analyze data by showing only the information you want. But applying these filters changes what others see in the file, too. And because Google Sheets is a collaborative cloud-based spreadsheet, you may want to filter data without changing the original data and impacting others who might be working on the data.
What is a Filter view in Google Sheets?
That's where the super helpful Filter Views come in! With Filter Views in Google Sheets you can apply the filter conditions of your choice without changing the original spreadsheet view. With Filter Views you can also sort the data without changing the original sort order of the data. In addition, you can save and name this filter view for easy access in the future. Filter views can also be used by your collaborators. You don't even need to activate Filter to use a filter views. Once saved, they can be accessed anytime.

Very concise and straightforward. I was able to quickly create a filter view in a shared data, even though this is new to me. Thank you, Leila!
I usually get these posts in the morning so during the day I can try them out for myself. So cool, so helpful, the way life should be. Thanks so much Leila for your efforts.
Thank you :) Yes. On Tuesdays so far I can only manage to get the videos out at 14:00 my time.
This was incredibly helpful. Thank you for explaining filters so clearly!
You rescued our department not to interrupt each others' works.
Thanks
I really admire and enjoy the professionality of your videos. Always useful, practice oriented, to the point. Thank you!
Glad you like them! Thank you.
You are google sheet icon, your tutorials have made me a master. Thanks for your amazings staffs Leila
Can you pop up a dialog box to ask what to filter? Something like this would give on-the-fly filtering a little more power.
By the way, your videos are amazing! I have worked as a data analyst for over 12 years and have learned a lot from you.
Keep the great videos coming!
I am watching this for the 10th time, and every time i watched it, learned a new thing about filter views! one the best illustration of How to use Google Sheets!
This is the solution for the issue I've been having with my spreadsheet. Thank you so much. I've been adding extra spreads with the filter function but I believe filter view reduces the spreadsheet size and improves performance. As well as make it cleaner.
i never knew it o.my.god filters are available in google shetts this is helpfull👍👍
Dear Leila, thank you for your valuable advice, always well explained. My use of gSheeet has dramatically improved and my work has become much more productive.
That's great to hear, Marco!
Thank you for explaining the difference between sort and filter. I was extremely frustrated to see the filter modify the Excel from the beginning, but now I have a better idea.
Filter view is sure a neat option when collaborating!
That was excellent thanks very much. I was able to work out the number of patients seen in a given time without upsetting my dataset.
Thanks! I've never understood how to use filter views until now. I've had extra sheets dedicated to common filters but now can do it all in one
Happy to help, Matt!
after watching this video.... " oh wao " was my reaction... Thanks --From Pakistan
Such a great tutor, i will definitely purchase your course on Udemy.

I wish you happiness and good luck ! thanks for the video !!!!
Excellent tutorial
Thank you!
Thank you, Leila for such a valuable and gorgeous presentation! I have a question. My boss wants that his managers (multiple users) work in one google sheet and have access to only their range of data and at the same time don't see other colleagues' work. How can I customize filters to reach that goal? Thanks!
awesome, thank you. that's what I'm exactly looking for.
Thanks, Teacher. Greetings from Rio.
You are welcome, Carlos!
thank you so much :)
Very helpful ❤️😁👍
This was a really good and instructive video
Glad you liked it.
I like the video ... thumps up
Thanks a lot.
thanks so much.
Any idea to add more selections like in the example of manager typed in, could we add another option by separating it with a comma. In this way it loads everything with manager, and another selection with the info after the comma. Out can we only "search" for one
You are awesome!:)
Big thank you..
Always welcome
Hello, we use google sheets for all of our projects with filter view - however we have noticed that sometimes when you filter "department"/"project size"/"project manager" to analyse the project close data at the end of the quarter the data can get mixed up - is there a way of ensuring the row's are fixed you can freely filter knowing that the row data will not move/re-jig itself?
I really like your tutorial. how amazing this tutorial with Google sheets.
Glad you like it!
Above Superb Really Nice
God bless you with your fmly
I'm frm India 🙂
Thank you so much 🙂
Thank you
Hi Leila, is it possible to use row level security in google sheets, or is it possible to restrict access to the views for editing and viewing, etc?
Hi Leila, Thanks for your quality presentations! Question: So can I set up multiple filter views and create a data validation type dropdown so that the user can call the filter view from within the spreadsheet?
You'd probably need a macro to activate the Filter View from a data validation selection. That's an interesting one though. I will take a closer look.
Thank you, but when I try sorting a column where it is referencing to other thing it generates a mess, EVEN in a separate view. Any tip?
Ur all videos are awesome,
I have a question, how can I sum up online the numbers that I have filtered in? Because when I try to sum numbers in any column it gives me sum of complete column even the filtered out numbers are not there. Thanks
Respect and reverence (in Russian uvazuha) to you for this informative video!
Thank you very much!
hi every year i have to prepare budget for multiple number of shops through out a year. Are there any formulas to help me distribute the figures so it will match the monthly target and yearly target by stores simultaneously? assume month in columns and 40 shops in rows.
waiting 7 mintues 45 seconds to get the answer:)
very nice.
Thank you Leila for an excellent presentation of Filter Views. After watching your video I opened the same shared sheet in different browsers, used filtered views, set a filter and saw that the second instance of the shared sheet did not change. However, then I hide columns in the filtered view and the second instance immediately hid the same columns that were hidden in the filtered view. Is there a way to also hide columns in one instance of a shared sheet but not impact others using the same shared sheet? Thank you again for your very helpful video on a powerful option in Google Sheets.
The other day I was playing with the filter by function but I didn't seem to work very well. Maybe I was doing something wrong. Thanks! The filter view is an excellent feature not many people know of.
The problem I had filter by function was it wasn't really dynamic (at least in terms of using cell references). I had to reset it to take the new value in the cell. I guess for these cases it's best to use the Filter Function instead.
@@LeilaGharani yes, that's it. It didn't automatically refresh!
@@LeilaGharani thanks for this series in sheets. Your videos are excellent!
Thanks for sharing... I feel this is same as Excel Sheet View
Yes, it is. It just seems a slower for me than GS.... at least when I was testing same data sets on both sides...
was Awesome
ohhh very excellent video about filter most useful for me.and i request to you please make video regarding clean up and column stats.
Thank you and welcome! These new features are great. I will try next week to get Smart Fill in. Have already added the clean up and stats to future videos. Thank you.
Hi, Is it possible that if one sheet is shared with multiple users and if I am applying any filter, other wont disturb and everybody can apply there own filter and work.
brilliant
Hi, very good tips as usual. I've created a tool for multiple people to use with dropdowns, the issue is because changes on google sheets are live, if multiple people are using at the same time it creates a confusion, is there an option to avoid live changes? where multiple people can use the dropdowns without chaning on the other users? Thanks
In folder X, I have 2 excel files from column A to column H. Now I want to delete the unnecessary columns B: D, F, H in both excel files of the folder. How to write VBA code, so that when running the code, a message box will appear looking for the X directory address (or you can enter the X directory path directly into the code)
thanks.
Thanks for this. Is it not possible to save a Filter View that is sorted by more than 1 column? This inability is basically a deal breaker (and is easily done in AirTable). Would love to know how to accomplish this in Sheets. Not sure what I'm missing here.
Hi, is there anyway of disabling the delete filter view option? I have set up a number of views and people keep deleting them, thanks andrew
Is there a way to protect the Filter View such that other shared users can 'View' my filter view but not be able to change the Filters? However, I want them to retain the ability to use the filter in the base view so I thinking protecting sheet is out of the question.
Plz, Ms Liela, share this file...
You are my favourite teacher
What is the best practical way if I want to filter a worksheet that has 100 names and create an individual filter for each name?
Hi Leila, How can I find a replace a value in cells that are filtered?
Currently I filter a column A, find and replace in Column B, remove filter of Column A, and all the values on Column B were replaced, instead seeing the replacement in the filtered view. Thank you!
I'm interested in this too, like how to filter a data, then changing the result to what you wanted the data to show
Is there a Datasheet view available like works 9 had - you can pull up datasheet one by one, enter the data, and make less errors in the data entry.
Nice video! Just a question, is Filter View in Sheets comparable with Excel Custom Views? I found Sheets Filter View more easier and intuitive though!
Thanks Vijay. It's comparable to "Sheet View" in Excel online. I believe Sheet View is only available for online and it also has similar functionality like Filter views in Sheets. Except they seem to be a lot slower than Google Sheets. I think this will improve though as Excel Online gets better.
Thank you so much for this..Question : how can I lock the filters? after I create the filters and leave my work , the filters are gone when i visited again the sheets.
😊
I was wondering if this can be done using app script.
I mean to use filter method for each user so that when they trigger the filter function it won't affect other users.
I understand and learned after watching your video. Before this i thought the background in dark colour means no internet connection...
I'm glad this helps : )
@@LeilaGharani tq for the reply
Is it possible to remove or change the Filter View colors? I really don't like the dark grey borders
Can I share a google sheet with a college but filter their view (like in Sharepoint) I don't want them to see certain columns. Just 2 columns out of 10. I didn't want to create another sheet and have to key in the data twice.... Thoughts???
each "filter view" is like a virtual version of the sheet.. if multiple people use the same filter view, you are essentially working on the same sheet and if someone does something with that filter view, it will affect whomever is using the same view... we stumbled across this while trying to update customer lists in real time and multiple people were using the same filter view to try and work outside of the main list.
Great video Mam...I badly needed the information.. but you should give a practical example where one google sheet is used by multiple user and no one disturb the other' s sheet.. can you make a short video on that... because I have a bad experience some days ago in my office in working in google sheet by multiple user...all the valuable data almost gone because of erroneous use of google sheet by multiple user... please Mam..make a video specifically on that topic..🙏
i am also facing the same problem....
I have a issue when I filter. A pop up used to come up saying see just mine or see everyone’s that option not longer pops up anyone to fix
great
This is not really at all what you are explaining here.. but I hope it's okay to ask it anyway. I have a situation where I have a table, the data of which is being converted into a graph. Now I want people who view the page to only see the graph (the plotting of this data). But I still want to be able to alter that data with formulas etc in the usual way. Is there a method I can use that hides the table from the online page that people see while at the same time being able to see it myself in order to alter the data. (The closest I've come to this is to simply drag the graph straight on top of the table so people can't see it and then if I wish to alter anything simply move it away and back again.. this is pretty impractical though because I have to waste time moving the graph I just don't know how else to do it. )
Hello Leila, how can i make a search box in google sheets, in such a way that i can filter data once i write in the search box
You make really helpful videos.
Is it possible to create an online ordering Google site for my business, which gets it's input from my Google sheet's dataset and return the order summary to the sheets ?
See this for reference ua-cam.com/video/QKQd8BXI30M/v-deo.html
what if someone works in various departments? how do I assign multiple categories to an item
Tip: Use version control before filtering your data!!
