  • What does this 1979 Railroad Crossing in Hollywood, Florida in Broward County look like in 2022 ? The old crossing sported a US&S Tear drop bell as well as A frame gates and incandescent signals which are all endangered species. This is several blocks North of the Amtrak Station and this railway crossing sports quad gates which are maintained by the SFRTA South Florida Regional Transportation Authority which CSX sold to them in 1991. These train tracks run parallel to I-95 up until West Palm Beach then go curve West and eventually North.

    I miss the a frame gates! Black and white with reflectors. They should have made fiberglass a frame gates. They looked stronger and harder to break.The ones now I'm not crazy about but it is what it is. And I love the mechanical bells. Some of the e-bells sound so weird. Nice area. Have a nice day😊

      @SpecialKomrade Рік тому

      A frame gates are more difficult to break, and thus when a car collides with the gate it can cause damage to the railroad crossing itself as the A frame does not give way to the car.

  • @kenroberts4767
    @kenroberts4767 2 роки тому +6

    Yes, I remember that area in 1979. The a-frame gate in the B&W photo could have been red and white; there were at one time red and white a-frame gates, before they switched to the single aluminum gates that they use now. I don't remember exact the year that they switched from black and white to red and white gates. And yes, I-95 has been rebuilt; more lanes have been added since 1979; the bridge in the B&W photo is gone. Also Taft Street has been redone.

    This crossing has been upgraded since 1979. The upgrade is certianly needed now that the crossing sees SFRTA and Amtrak trains. There are probably some SFRTA exoress trains pass the crossing at high speeds. Thank you for showing us this upgraded crossing. It would have been nice if a train came past while you were there to capture the current gate set up here.

    I don't ever recall ' No horn blowing ,' through any multiple crossings, especially at track speed. It wasn't until I was 'I getting ready to retire. I began hearing of them. In larger municipalities, that had multiple crossings, throughout , the city . Too many problems to even mention ,and many of them are extremely dangerous. What most companies do now. Is slow the train to restricted speed,, not to exceed 10 mph, and the engineer turns on the bell, at the whistle post . It's unclear how a local government, can override a federal rule like this regulation ..These mandates by the FRA, were designed for safety of motorists ,the train crews, and walking pedestrians .With these massive consists, just slowing the speed down, can really jam up traffic, but it's the only policy for the companies,to ,impose to run safely . On the line I supervised, part of it went down the middle of a street. It was kind of the same policy; although, the engineer could give short blasts. The two main crossing streets, would start the traffic lights to go into a four way flash mode, and the engineer was authorized to use the horn blowing sequences.. Even then, I can't tell you the number of times, I had to stop the train, because cars would stop,,but right on the tracks .
    Now my friend, please me as a question; I keep hearing you reference that the gates, were made from fiberglass?? Except for the very early gates, made from wood, it was understood that they were fiberglass. Are they differently made now? Also, why do some crossings, have five or six flashers, facing one way,with the same number facing the other side of the crossing ? It's clear that multiple gates, are much better in keeping many vehicles, from driving around them, but six LED flasher heads ,both directions?

    • @railrol82
      @railrol82  2 роки тому +1

      You know your stuff, Gary. To answer your question about the gates, the modern ones are made out of aluminum. And as for the flashers, it could be one of two things. Nowadays, at least in South FL, with all the recent fatalities due to the new "high speed" (79Mph) RR companies down here are really safety oriented now to prevent tragedies. I've even seen suicide hotline signs on the tracks. It could also be that sometimes RR companies have government grants and they need to spend the money or lose it. I love it! Thanks Railrol! This line got double track in 1988 or 1989 for TriRail! Hopefully, TriRail will extend south from the MIA someday to Homestead. Hopefully if the S line is scrapped ( and it unfortunately looks like there is a greater than 90% chance of scrapping it), then the Ludlam corridor and busway right of way can be used. (It should be used because of the population density, as well as the undeniable fact that the South Miami Dade Busway is a tremendous waste of money and a total failure and the “linear park” on the Ludlam corridor will just be a concrete and asphalt path and nothing special which will eliminate a corridor from being used for transportation.) Lightweight battery powered passenger trains that also use third rail and can be bought new or rebuilt from retired subway cars. These can share the ROW with TriRail trains and freight and ride on the MetroRail elevated line and recharge using its third rail and give people a one seat ride to downtown and the Airport as well as passenger service on the Lehigh Spur. It makes too much sense for the local politicians to do this, despite their claim to love the environment!

    • @armandoperez7967
      @armandoperez7967 2 роки тому +1

      We have a democratic administration and a self professed lover of public transportation and transit in the White House. The infrastructure bill theoretically provides untold millions upon millions of dollars for public transit. The local politicians and the people should make them pay up for the county’s transportation needs and get this done before it is even more expensive and difficult than it is now! In my humble opinion, I don’t understand the math that these politicians come up with! First, they say that they will build rail like stations which can serve rail if it is ever laid. These will get done regardless of mode and the layout of these will force any future rail to be at ground level and not elevated. The expense of the stations should NOT be used as an excuse against rail. Second, the busway has to be ripped up in order to accommodate the stations and put in new wiring for improved signaling and they have even spoken of putting in gates like the crossing gates for railroads! A new rail line costs about 3.5 million per mile and 7 million per mile for double track on flat level ground. This is LESS than what was paid to build the STUPID BUSWAY! And the track was already there! The busway is 22 miles long and cost 10 million dollars per mile, not including signaling, to build. They are taking more than 140 million from the Biden administration for this which in my opinion, should be used immediately for rail!

The frustrating thing is that despite only having a public school education and not the full blown law and economics degrees of the pols and their handlers as well as the untold letters after their names, that I can come up with these ideas and they don’t or won’t! The sad thing is that they have wasted so much money and time that rail to at least the Cutler area on the south and to Miami Dade College along NW 27 Ave could have already been done and elevated, not at ground level! And have money left over! The thievery and mismanagement is incredible! If they were private sector workers or executives, they would be fired or jailed! But because they are in “public service” (ahem)(wink, wink), they get away with it! Thank goodness the sign doesn't say abandoned. That's a sad sign of the times regarding suicide prevention. It is however good to see a sign in case it's on someone's mind. What makes the Xing unique is that the concrete panels extend into the sidewalk area and finished off with asphalt. Friday spotted a rare (apparently one of nine) tank car with reporting marks ROLX. It belongs to Empire State Rail car with offices in CA & NV. Sadly the owner who says this is an investment tool in tank cars has apparently been used for fraud. What should have been a solid connection to railroads got the voodoo curse. No respect!

      LOL Wow, that is some fine investigative work on your part my friend. You should've played the lottery that day, you spotted 1 out 9 rail cars in the whole US of A, one of which was used for fraud... Talk about a unicorn!!
