  • We all know things that need to improve in our communities (e.g., social justice, sustainability, accessible health care), but many feel helpless and at a loss as to what to do about it. The first step to change is to change that helpless mindset with a simple recipe for community organizing. In her teaching practice, Dr. Marina Barnett focuses on advocacy and commitment to social justice, assessment, working with diverse populations, and the use of technology. Her vision for her students is that they see themselves as leaders capable of engaging any population. Her courses demonstrate the social work values of partnering with clients, non-judgementalism, and valuing the uniqueness and capabilities of individuals. An assessment of strengths is an integral aspect of both her teaching and her practice. Dr. Barnett believes that every person has inherent strengths and gifts that enable them to contribute to society and address their own issues. She seeks to inspire others to take control of their own education, to become active participants in their own lives and in their communities, and to be dedicated and committed to the eradication of social injustice. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

My mom used to read me stone soup as well. I think she made it a preschool lesson once. I teared up when you recounted her story.

I enjoyed this video. You hear things that you didn't even know that you needed to hear. It gives you a change of mind/attitude about the people around you. What I mean is that it prompts you to want to give /share. There's so much food that we need- food for thought and growth.

I love this! There are so many things that need addressing in our society, and I sometimes feel helpless and hopeless in my ability to actually make an impact and bring about change. This is a simple recipe for tackling a cause, getting results, and making a difference.

okay, I’m already 7 minutes into this video, and so far there is a sweet story about the benefits of community organizing, but zero information on HOW to community organize. so in that sense, this video is not helpful. are there instructions in the second half of this video? I’m not going to waste any more of my time to find out.
