According to the movie notes, all the "breaking glass" in this scene was sugar glass paired with sound effects, and it was the most sugar glass ever used in one scene at the time.
lol had toshiro staying with my dad in edinburgh when he does aikido seminars... all i can say is he is great with da bokken and can eat his own bodyweight in chinese food awesome guy
I can see that he is a real kendoka. Even though he was doing some stupid movements, to please the audience, there was at least a little okuri ashi there. Fun fact: the shinai (sword) is made of bamboo, not to injury the opponent.
This isn't the fight scene. This is some blu-ray version from some 2010ish era disc. The colours are wrong. The sounds are lower in pitch, too. There's over 20 unique versions on 1 disc. You never saw the original experience from your disc.
Funniest ever Bond scene. I still chuckle at it. You suspect everything has to be smashed and then they actually proceed to do it systematically. A good homage to the Cato scenes in Pink Panther.
Hollywood Nuki waza! No seriously, the actor Toshiro Suga is an Aikido instructor. He is not a Kendo Player and of course they had some sort of fighting choreography for the movie.
Chang get’s his orders to eliminate Bond in the middle of doing his late night Kendo practice. Chang: Understood, I’ll get out of my sparring gear and head right out… Drax: There’s no time. Chang: No really, it won’t even take a second. Drax: NOW! Chang: … will you at least let me get a proper lethal weapon? Drax: Did I stutter? Chang: *sigh*
I feel real sorry for the museum owners, all those valuable, beautiful artifacts ruined, now they are worth nothing and nobody can enjoy them, plus the poor cleaner who has to clean that up.
Yup, play it again Sam because I remember that scene right there on Moonraker when agent 007 was fighting a guy with a kendo stick because the scene was pretty cool when he caused all that destruction at a local museum over in Italy and I remember the part when agent 007 to take guy that threw him out of the clock tower and into a grand piano down on the street below and the last thing that agent 007 said, was, play it again, Sam because I really like this movie because I’ve watched it a couple of days ago.
I always wondered that when Bond gets into a fight or a chase with henchman and there's bound to be collateral damage. Who pays the damages? Since this art museum is owned by Drax, I wonder if those damaged items are insured by him.
Lol 🤣 I wonder When I was a kid, I didn't laugh when I watched this scene. The kendo guy attacks looked cool (at that time). But now I've been playing kendo for 18 years, and this movie is played again on TV, now it looks so hillarious. 🤣 I am thinking why that guy bothered wearing whole kendo armor just to kill Bond. And most of all, a bamboo sword (shinai) is a poor choice to really kill Bond. Why didn't he just grab a real katana sword, instead of his bamboo sword being cut rapidly to pieces by Bond. Lol 🤣
I thought the laughing smily at the end the of the sentence would make it clear :D but i added the quotation marks anyway. The bond movies and especially the older ones are all together very amusing. Don't take these to seriously. Check out my other Videos fo real kendo technique. :)
In the 60's the Bond franchise owned action adventure. By the late 70's they had serious competition. They now needed the 007 films to get the kids to go to the theater to see. They could not rely on people in their 40's who had grown up reading the Fleming novels. Campy was also the order of the day for this time period. Things looked a bit touchy after Man With the Golden Gun, but The Spy Who Loved Me put it back in good fiscal condition. They intended to keep it that way. Moonraker was a huge money maker that looking back on you can say, "Hey, they did what they had to do."
Sometimes (I know, utterly reasonably) I wonder how they sort out the insurance issues after such a fight. The blue glass dome was worth a million. The whole glass collection, probably as much. The clock and the piano were ruined. So, does 007 or MI6 have a special insurance to cover such collateral costs?
I never thought of that. There's a genuine possibility it could be. However, I also lean into it being a silly Bond film fight which enabled lots of glass to be smashed. Also, important to remember it offset the extremely unpleasant & upsetting killing of Corrine a few scenes earlier
@macbluescreen And I thought I was the only one that thought this scene was funny. You are right about You Only Live Twice, especially when the one ninja runs up to the screen with sword in hand.
Well this "best" was meant ironically. I know that he is doing absolute crap since iam doing Kendo myself for a few years now. But i kind of like that scene because its really funny. There is another Scene in "You only live twice" when Bond enters the "Ninjacamp" in Japan which is also very funny. :D
This isn't moonraker. This is a streaming version of a blu-ray thing. There are hundreds of versions of this scene. What became your memories? James bond isn't 2 inches across.
Chang is useless, a high assassin trained martial artist, should not be losing to a novice White belt, absolutely ridiculous, Chang should have been able, to finish Bond off in under a minute, with or without his sword!
Toshiro Suga's script: "YAaaaaaaAAH! OaaaaAAAh! AAAA! iiiiiEEEEEEE!"

You change the colours of the movie with your home cinema.

Moore's era of Bonfd wasn't known for its fight scenes, but I must say this was a very good fight scene.
I can see that he is a real kendoka. Even though he was doing some stupid movements, to please the audience, there was at least a little okuri ashi there.
Fun fact: the shinai (sword) is made of bamboo, not to injury the opponent.
"Play it again, Sam !". Ironically, this has been said in every film but the one people attribute it to.
Thanks to Woody Allen for that...but the correct pharse would be "Play It Sam."
"Play it Sam" from Casablanca 1942
Love this scene. Chang reminds me of Cato from the Pink Panther films.
Cato was played by Bond veteran Burt Kwouk.
Alternatively, he could have said "You'll never get into Carnegie Hall playing like *that*!"

Actually, it's Kato and he's from Green Hornet.
This is my favourite moment in James Bond which makes me what to burst out laughing at Chang's death into the Piano, xD LOL

His screaming is hilarious, it's kinda hard to take these movies serious 😂
Was Chang sent to kill Bond, or just to injure and capture him? Because why would he bring a bamboo pole rather than a real sword?
I never thought of that. There's a genuine possibility it could be. However, I also lean into it being a silly Bond film fight which enabled lots of glass to be smashed. Also, important to remember it offset the extremely unpleasant & upsetting killing of Corrine a few scenes earlier

Good use of the glass handled sword, by Bond.
Roger Looks EPIC!
O dear, all that invaluable glass crafts?!
I still don't know why it's so funny watching Roger Moore awkwardly jog his way through action scenes.
Play it again, Chang
I would love to see the script paper for Chang's lines in that scene a page full of yahhh ooooooo eeeeeeeeeee hahahahahhahahahahahaha!
I know Venice is a bit of a weird place but you have to ask how low profile a guy in full Kendo regalia truly is?
Dude literally chose the one thing specifically made to not kill people.
Now, That's a James Bond....
The funny thing was that they show theses priceless stuff few moments before and Bond and the other guy then proceed to destroy.
I used rewind to Chang's facials at 1:31 over and over. It never wasn't funny.
0:01 "In England, we say good evening!"
Why would he use a Shinai in a real fight?
A bokken will be deadlier and more easily available than a Shinai
And a shinai is just a training weapon anyhow.
Why did not attack Bond with a real katana?
Talk about way to kill the moment.
that's surprise me even more, he didn't know how to wear gi and hakama?
1:18 - Strike!

So why was there a Kendo warrior guarding a science lab?
I thought it was "play it again son" but it's Sam.
Such an odd mix of proper Kendo technique and then wildly swinging the shinai like an idiot.
Kind of a cool fight scene even if it was a misuse pf the kendo stuff!
