  • I've been working on making some variegated corn that is ornamental and pops good too. I have a more clear picture of what I want to do over the next several years. In this video, I'll show you some of what we harvest last year, and I'll also explain what I plan to do this year.

Jim, I am enjoying following along with your variegated-leafed ornamental popcorn project. Hopefully, in 2024 you'll make great strides in this process. It's crazy to think that Easter is only a week away. I hope you and Mrs. Midwest Gardener have a wonderful Easter. ~Margie🤗🌽

Very interesting!! I haven't grown corn in years but think this year I'm going to do it again. This weekend I'm starting my tomatoes and peppers, we got 5" of snow yesterday, but back to the 50ºs this week. Always interesting stuff Jim!

Thanks Craig! We aren't done with the chilly weather yet, but we are probably done with the snow. We do get snow in April sometimes, but not too often. Hope you guys don't get too much more snow. Hope you have a great growing year!

Good Morning Jim - I would say you have your hands full juggling all those different popcorn traits but am sure you will have success finding the perfect combination. I tried to grow regular corn in large planters and it did not work out so well. Hope it warms up a little so I can get some of my potatoes planted outside as they are almost ready to go. Have a wonderful weekend..

Good morning Sue. I was hoping the same thing about the weather. It seems like I'm too busy when the weather is nice, and don't feel like it when the weather isn't nice. We will get some nice weather sooner or later. Have a great weekend!

Very cool project. I'm not crossing, more like Ultra-Crossing. My second year on my sweet corn ultra cross project mixing a very large number of varieties that are compatible for not mixing the two sweet genes and throwing dent. They are also grown with zero sprays, and even zero watering. Even in Texas drought I got a few survivors and the weak genetics plants died not sharing their genetics for the next generation. The goal of course is a sweet corn, strong like a bull that doesn't need constant inputs as in large scale agriculture just to survive and not die. I am also working on grain corn under similar conditions. I am half year into that. I say half as I started with hickory king from large scale Ag and tortured them under no sprays and no watering outside of rain. Same Texas drought conditions. A lot of weak genetics died but a few made it through and created seed corn. This year I have a whole collection of different grain corn varieties, all already grown under various non high input large scale Ag conditions. I'll start my Ultra-Crossing all of the grain corn this year once the sweet corn is done pollinating and I will start the grain mix planting late so they don't pollinate together and mix sweet genetics with grain genetics. At least that's the plan. Already seeing survival in no already, no water, Texas drought has inspired me that I could create both a sweet corn and grain corn landrace to grow with low to zero inputs. My philosophy is let the weak genetics that multiplied on high input large Ag methods die early and en masse so I only have strong like bull survivors pass on genetics into the next seasons landrace seed

Sounds like an interesting project. Grow under stressful conditions and let mother nature do the selecting for you.

I just love the different colors, does the popcorn taste different? We just had about 3in. of snow but my perennials are already up. I have left them covered though because I think we will still get one more good snow fall. Happy Easter to you and your Wife. 🐣

Thanks you very much! The popcorn tastes ok, but maybe not as good as store bought. We don't have snow here, but there is snow in the western part of the state. It's going to be pretty cold today though. Hope you have a very Happy Easter too!
