Totally agree. Ari has solidified himself as a master and genius of filmmaking with Midsommar. He disguises family dramas, breakups and journey's of self discovery as horror films. I think most mainstream audiences will only view it as a weird wtf trip movie, but he really digs much deeper and creates horror films that will last a lot longer than the immediate gratification of jump scares.

If todays generation is bored with hereditary and midsommar, it shows they have no appreciate for art (which is what movies are) and also that they have fallen captive to only appreciating movies with an over emphasis on CGI and explosions that only have a dash of plot substance (i.e., the avengers). Also the problem is people do not read anymore. We used to be captivated with LOTR and Harry Potter so we could appreciate a slow build of a plot developing but now that there has not been as much energy put into reading/writing we demand more immediately gratifying movies rather then looking back at the overarching theme they are depicting.

    • @aglayamajorem9546

They'd rather watch MCU and Disney garbage.

    • @kpobje
      @kpobje 5 років тому +1

I appreciate that breakdown, but the movie was less about why the plot was taking place and more about what the plot represents as it pertains to relationships. The predictability of the ending was representative of the inevitability of relationships that are not cut off at the right time. You were never supposed to get attached to the characters as much as you were the themes they were representing. The main male star was purposely without depth to represent the uninterest of men in general when it comes to communicating their feelings and working on a relationship. Florence Pugh represents the female that will do anything to make a relationship work despite the fact that there are in this case obviously horrible outcomes in the end, both to yourself and to others. As usual with Ari Aster, he is not as big on character development as he is on the themes the characters represent.

The scene where Christian has her pubic hair in his pie he had blood in his drinking glass. The color of his was different than all the rest. I've heard of menstrual blood love spells out of Mexico (brujas).

Personally, I think he was being straightforward there. I think probably his biological parents were killed in a fire away from the cult, and somehow, the cult got their hands on him and raised him. He stated he was an orphan before the cult brought him in. He could be twisting what really happened, but I take it at face value.

Saw this today. It was mind blowing. I liked Hereditary so I was.pretty optimistic when I went to see this one but also a bit skeptical since as they saw lightning doesn't strike the same place twice. Seldom does a horror director is as lucky as to create another good piece to rival his first one but Ari After knocked it right out of the park. The film was visually stunning and creepy af. I like this type of horror because it is what I want to feel when I go to see a scary movie: to feel disturbed or freaked out afterwards.

  • @TheGabrielberki

This movie was not great by any stretch. It was cool to see a “horror” set in such an amazing location, the costumes and visual effects looked great. But other than that, I felt bored for the majority of the first half. By the end I wanted to walk out. I laughed out loud several times at some of the cringe scenes that took place. Talk about self indulgent and lazy writing. Things just flat out go nowhere and the plot just straight up abandons story lines. It’s one thing to pay homage to movies like the wickerman it’s another to directly rip it off completely. I loved hereditary, this has been one of the most disappointing things I’ve seen in years, sadly.

Same. I enjoyed the movie (Hereditary is my all-time favorite), but the audience detracted from the experience. If you see this in a theatre full of casual movie goers, it's inevitable you'll get obnoxious levels of nervous laughter during some of the more twisted parts. Because it is an extremely uncomfortable and wild film, people don't know how to react. A few people laugh, then everyone else nervously mimics them.

Just watched the film last night. Good movie. For me, a movie always gets a thumbs up when there is full frontal male nudity in it. The last act of this film reminded me a bit of Suspiria 2018. I thought Heriditary was a bit more jolting than this film. I like how Aster tackles the family unit in his films.

Although I enjoyed this film, I can’t help but feeling it’s a work of anti-White Jewish propaganda.
Had this been a movie been directed by a Swede, and based around a group of young Evangelicals who’d gone to Israel, only to be ritually murdered and put into Passover matzah, everyone would be screaming about how ‘vile’ and ‘anti-Semitic’ it was. Instead, it was directed by a Jew, and centres round a group consisting of mainly black characters being ritually murdered by a group of White Swedes, according to certain manufactured aspects of White European folklore.
    Coincidence? I think not!

Slow, with terrible dialog and a cast that might not make the cut on an average soap opera, the freakish cult members and sporadic violence are not enough to save what is essentially a B movie with a large budget. if you like heady arthouse...very high arthouse... obscure, beat you over the head with extreme symbolism, with a surreal element, you will like it. If you expect a typical movie story format you will be sadly disappointed. It is not really horror, just symbolism..more symbolism..metaphor for human horrors.. and then it ends on a disturbing note. If that is your cup of tea you will love it.

@@daaajester1 Jess Castro I've studied film for 20 years. There's nothing more appealing ,in my opinion, than a movie that can completely transport you to its universe and make you have some type of self reflection or realization that envelopes your being. With that being said, I harken to films like MOTHER. Where there is. O actual device other than an artist self aggrandizing the idea of "This is me". Aronofsky made that film out of the due flop of NOAH and wanted to touch basis with how he really felt about religion. Aster, I think and will never know for certain without a crucial sit down interview, made this film to stay on the outskirts and make zany art for the sake of that's his style. Which is perfectly fine. What's wrong with a little effort to making a connection with the audience and feeding their senses? Were you in fact connected with Dani or Chris? I find it hard to believe that most audiences were considering the very centricity of what transpires. If you're really thinking about joining a cult, to each their own. I still praise Aster in doing what he wants and loves. Does that make for entertainment for everyone? Not at all. That's why art is art. It's subjective not injected 😉. Everyone injest it differently and has different feelings. That's what I love most about film.

@@williamdowd3985 I found hereditary a better story... and this better produced... if that makes any sense. I enjoy unique story's that are presented in engaging ways.
This movie felt like "look how artsy/edgy I am". It gave me about the same feeling walking out as Neon Demon did... looked gorgeous.. but was a bit predictable and just not engagingly put together in any kind of coherent story that made any amount of sense. This movie, and Neon Demon for that matter, are more surreal metaphor than actual story imo.
Yes of course you feel connected to Dani and Chris..but really just Dani.. and yeah I'm sure that's by design.
I dunno I went in with really high hopes and was just kinda meh walking out. I can appreciate how gorgeous it was, and there is no doubt in my mind that this director has actually tripped on shrooms/acid before. I have never seen a more accurate presentation, and his attention to minutiae impeccable... but that doesn't mean its a "good story".. just good art I guess.

I actually made it through ND with much dispare. Also recently UNDER THE SILVER LAKE. It's such a strange film about nothing. Which has the same essence as this movie, but yet is entertaining.
It's not hard to be an edgey filmmaker, just know what category you're in and make it affect me personally with characters being sympathetic to my emotional range. I at least want to either be entertained or feel something.
This movie had a grander production value considering the success of HEREDITARY. Aster will continue to make pictures, at least for now, that's within that "look at my art" style.
