“Back in India, the economy is dumpster fire.”
I said that in this video and am getting a lot of Indian bros disagreeing, so … was it fair?
People have pointed out two facts, which are undeniably true: 1) The Indian economy is large, and is (or is soon to be) the world’s 4th largest. And 2) in the last handful of years, it’s been improving at a good rate.
Yet my “dumpster fire” has some data to back that up.
    - GNI PER CAPITA: I believe this is the fairest way to judge an overall economy, since it doesn’t allow people to cherry-pick good/bad data. Despite the massive size of the economy - they have 1.4 billion people, after all - on a per person basis, it’s still pretty poor, with a GNI of $2,200 per person. That places it #123 in the world, on par with countries like Jamaica and Namibia or some others I hadn’t heard of.
    - INCOME DISPARITY: In the world’s biggest country, there are billionaires who throw parties for more dollars than I’ll ever earn, and there millions of people in abject poverty. The last stats show about 140 million people living under $2.15 per day. That’s both improved from the past, and still horrible.
    - RECENT STATS: Some are improving, but we’re still looking at a 9.2% unemployment rate in June, lowered savings, substandard healthcare, education, labor participation rates, and India still has a yearly net-out migration of about a half-million, which is proportionally small but more people are still leaving the country than entering it.
So … is that a good/large/improving economy or still one that’s still Third World, despite being one of the earliest civilizations on Earth?

I think dumpster fire was a bit of an exaggeration. Yes, India needs to improve on its wealth inequality. But when we judge anything we do so based on the past. India was a basket-case (which the Brits thought will be Balkanized within a decade) when it was finally independent. It was staring at bankruptcy as recently as 1990 before it liberalized its economy. A more accurate comparison would be the median income difference between Indians living in the US and Indians living in India... and I guess that what you actually meant to say.

We call a Dumpster fire economy , when Debt to GDP Ratio is 124%. When the nation is in $33 Trillion inFederal Debt. When the time it will take to completly pay the Federal debt if GDP was paid without Zero expenses is 340 Years... An economy which runs by printing money is called Whitehouse Dumpster Fire Economy.

Because people in the global north, NGOs and goverment state department in the west are still exploiting the global south, for example Africa is not underdeveloped, it's over exploited. They don't want the global south to develop, it's not in their interest. Americans especially want to maintain their hegemony.

It’s true, India was looted by Muslim and British invaders in the past. It takes time to develop a country. It’s very hard for India to rise because of geopolitics. India is surrounded by the enemies inside and outside. Pakistan gets funding from America, China, and other western countries against India. So many things still going on against India to divide it further by foreign countries. But it’s true Indians encourage their children for study. Indians also respect and follow the law and order wherever they go. They don’t do any kind of jihad.

This podcaster does not have some basic info about India. Like any European or US media these guys will show a dinghy street when they show India as if all of India look like that! Shame on these guys !! When they show their own countries they will show most modern sides not the dirty streets - people living in the side walks, drug addicts roaming around the street with fierce looks (this is a common sight on the streets of most of western countries). I'm not saying India is as good as the western countries but everyone would try to project good side if a country unless one produces a documentary on homeless people or something related to hygiene.

I agree with you. I live in a 1500-square-foot house in the middle of 1.5-acre beautiful land here in southern India. Like me, the majority of people in my home two own large houses and have excellent quality of life. But in cities like Mumbai, which holds one of the largest numbers of billionaires in the world, land prices are more expensive than in New York; hence, factory laborers cannot afford to own land and end up living in unlivable areas, such as near the waste dumping sites and the crowded slums. Cities like Mumbai have slums because so many people are filthy rich and own all the properties.

The difference between Chinese and Indian immigrant students is Chinese study and go back to their country and use their skills there and develop their own country. The conditions there are conducive for that. Whereas Indian students after completing their education from American universities work in America for a living because back there in India conditions for job opportunities for high skilled talent is very very poor. Both central and state governments treat their citizens like beggars like any communist/socialist governments do and want to hand over freebies instead of creating employment opportunities. For creating employment you need high skilled work force but for distributing alms you can just randomly pick some beggars and ask them to distribute among themselves. That is the difference. India is almost like Venezuela because the political mindset irrespective of political party has not changed since independence. Look at the percentage of H1B visas grabbed by Indians 81 percent go to Indians. Chinese only 3 percent. Educated Indians somehow want to leave the country and settle abroad . they don't want their children to suffer like they suffered in India. even our own celebrated minister of external affairs son has chosen to become a US citizen. Another bizarre fact about Indian education is ninety three percentage of so called " SCHOLORSHIPS" given by all universities ,educational institutions ,Central and state governments are given to those where consideration for getting a scholarship is other than merit. Mostly on the basis of in which caste you are born not on the basis of how you excel academically.

For every 3 Indian CEOs making headlines, thousands (23,763 H1 approvals in ‘24) of Indians in the U.S. face immense uncertainty about their future in the country. Imagine living day-to-day not knowing if or when you might be forced to leave, despite working hard, paying taxes, being humble, and raising families while dealing with fear of discrimination or worse for your kids.
On visas like L1, mobility is nearly impossible. On H1B, switching jobs can take months with no guarantees, making it hard to join startups or explore opportunities. Many endure this because they are chasing the American dream and deeply admire what this country stands for.
So, next time you see an Indian family at the mall or on the street, recognize that they’re likely high earners (most making $120K+), contributing significantly to the economy, yet carrying the burden of uncertainty about their future. They’re trying to build lives here, just like so many others before them.

Hey Ken great video, but you are committing a slight error. You are inferring that the huge Indian household income is because of values, traditions work ethics etc. You also mention that Indians have the lowest divorce rate of all ethnicities.
Well that’s the trick if an average green person earns 70k but lives alone, and the average Indian earns 40k but is always living with a working partner that would make household incomes larger for Indians , which hides a different reality.
In reality other metrics do show Indians success but this one could be misleading.
For instance it was used to say that black Americans have their average income declined during the last 40 years, which in fact the average income of a black American has increased, but given that the divorce rate has skyrocketed, the household income could have decreased you know ?
It’s just a comment, I really appreciate your work . Keep on man !

      @ElephantsInRooms  4 місяці тому

You know, this is a fantastic point and one I need to dig into more, especially for future videos. You're right in that different divorce rates could -- depending on how they deal with divorced parents -- definitely be affected even if salaries were unchanged.
Thinking it through, if I divorce my wife, are we now considered two separate families? If she remarries, are the kids considered part of two families? I can see it getting confusing, but is worthwhile to know.
I'll definitely look into it. You know, one of the slight bummers about producing these videos is I sometimes -- like now -- get educated better, but only after the video is produced.
      Thanks Kevin!

Ok, I spent some time with this and can confidently say: I'm not really sure.
The income data comes from the U.S. Census and that's all household based, and I could only find one reference that attempted to break it down by individual. That was Pew, which I highly regard.
Even they, though, didn't give me a comparison to other American ethnicities, just Indian vs. Asians in the U.S. And those numbers showed Indians substantially outperforming.
According to them, Median Annual Personal Earnings of full time workers: Asians - $60,000, Indians $85,000, roughly the same differences we saw with family earnings, maybe even larger. Again, no national comparison for everyone, though.
Those are also round numbers and I couldn't find their source/methodology and I don't know divorce rates for Asians in general here.
      www.pewresearch.org/fact-sheet/asian-americans-indians-in-the-u-s/#:~:text=MEDIAN%20ANNUAL%20PERSONAL%20EARNINGS%20%28ages%2016%20and%20older%20with%20positive%20earnings%29%20%7C%20%7C%7C%7C%7C

Finally Americans are waking up to the powerhouse Indian talent that has become a critical part of the country. Their hardwork and contribution to developed America is recognised after three generations or more.
Good points. What’s missed is that only Indian Hindu are at the top anywhere in the world, as also seen by wealthy American Hindu Lobby catered to by Obama and Trump alike. The crux of this success is the continual ancient Hindu civilisation values in families though distorted gravely due to invasions, genocides and modernism. You’ve extracted the points well on education, math and arranged marriage within families. If you look closely these values are identical with ultra rich generational wealth holding rich families anywhere. That’s because that’s the only way to succeed with stability, passing the benefits down the generations or building up in case of newly poor Indians thanks to Brit’s and Islam induced multiple genocides. Indians have a very strong civilizational memory of wealth and are just trying to get back to where our great grandparents were.
Math runs in Indian DNA so that’s a natural. Medicine, law, engineering are culturally revered due to lineage of Ayurveda, Dharm, Excellent architectural genius of civilisation. But the Hindu education behemoth system was cut by the Brit’s and English education imposed which is highly inferior hence the struggling Indians post Brit colonialism. Hence, they all get whatever education they can get by the fragmented British education system setup in 1800s and to avoid corruption of govt that kills opportunities, Indians move for opportunities essentially though reluctantly as Indian food and spirituality is carried by them in their hearts wherever they go. Spirituality is a huge basis for non consumerism, minimalism, karma conscience to do well and strong sense of giving back to those who gave them shelter, ie the countries they migrate to in current context. Teachers are seen as revered sages culturally hence even if current teachers aren’t anywhere near that level, still out of respect, you’ll see some videos going viral of Indian graduates touching feet of American professors who jumps back in confusion lol.
Edit: With economically rising India and Indians queuing up to come back to their home country, American politicians are worried about draining Indian talent, hence such videos are becoming the talk of the town. As Trump said "Indians study in Ivy Leagues here and go back to India, create businesses , become millionaires and billionaires making their home country rich. We need to stop the talent and give them green card straight away with their graduation degrees in STEM etc fields".
Just wish Americans become kind to Indians who are concentrated in top layer where their peers have no qualms but face racism from larger society. It is evident with Indian standup comedians and others who live with drooping shoulders in fear of being attacked, afraid of breathing to their full capacity, wherever they work among layman Americans. Racism which doesn't exist in India despite being the most diverse country or because of being the most diverse country.

Eg) cutoff for general in jee is mostly near 90-92 percentile and sc/st less then 45 percentile and total 65% seats are reserved and other 35% is not for general but open for others too,
So yeah they leave because they are hardworker and wants to spend a prideful life in a notion with better unbaised system.
Edit 1: I hope you understand it better what's going on how the native Indians especially Hindus are treated as 3rd class filthy citizens in their own country, so they look outside for better opportunity and respect.

In India, the hunger for education is amazing/frightening. Everyone wants to become a doctor or engineer. Even poor in India are focused in getting best education for their children, and they will go to any extent to ensure it. I do not see that hunger and drive in the US.

As an Indian born half decade naturalized citizen of the USA, I can vouch for a 100% accuracy of all your points in this video. You sure did your homework.
This is also why conservative political leaning should be natural home for Indians but somehow that has not been the case largely, although it is changing as the immigrants' kids grow (example Vivek Ramaswami).
We love the USA, our adopted homeland. There is opportunities for everyone if they just apply themselves.

As an immigrant paying taxes in the US for my entire stay here, more than a decade, there are many taxes we pay for but are not eligible for the benefits. e.g. medicare is not allowed for non-citizens, but we sure have to pay the medicare taxes. if anything, the tax laws are biased against immigrants since their benefits cannot be given to them.

What people forget the Civil Rights Movement's USA has played a vital part and made it possible for Indians and many people of coloured coming to USA to well. Indians in United Kingdom do well too. The great sense of family value and working to build wealth and breaking the glass ceiling to achieve good Education, careers, and business developments. They believe in generation wealth. The extended families is key and culture is so important in all indian societies today. Many people of different cultures do not follow this moto.

The caste system has kept the majority of Indians poor . The system pays more attention to white indians . They have access to better education and livelihood , they live in rich areas. They have access to loans and easy travel abroad .
The southern darkskinned indians are left to survive on their own .
India has the potential to become the richest country in the world with zero poverty rates . They must abolish the caste system.

I agree with most of the stuff in this video. The Indian per capita is slightly misleading. A dollar goes a long way in India than it does in Europe or USA. Income inequality is a big issue though in India.

Given this nice effort, let me give a framework to break down which groups are indeed comparable and thus understand the curious phenomenon.
Population-wise, India is about 4 Americas. To make sense, it is of key importance to check the comparability of America to each quarter India separately. One of them is indeed comparable with America and it is good to know which one.
The average Indian in the top quarter of India - which is equal in size to America - may be less wealthy in dollar terms but is considerably better educated (say, most of them know at least 3 languages) and financially and culturally more conservative. Traditionally, they are conditioned in many age-old and elitist socio-cultural privileges (think "Boston Brahmins" in the US) that are sustained and preserved by their upper caste status. E.g., they relegate all high-risk tasks to multiple servants in each such household.
Historically, this top layer made India the global economic leader from 200 BCE to 1200 CE. For perspective, America is the global leader for 2 centuries now. This layer knows how to make and keep their money really well. (They even regarded the Western colonizers as culturally inferior.) So just no comparison there.
The 2nd quarter of Indians is where things get more comparable. Americans come across this group as small business owners and officers when they visit India. Some of these middle-class Indians take a loan to send their kids to the US with high-school degrees and legal visas.
Then they study and work very hard to repay the loan, and save for themselves and also pulling their families up to upper-middle class back home. It keeps them focused, sincere, law-abiding, and serious. Plus, there is huge peer pressure to succeed. They never waste time in things that they may consider superfluous or unproductive.
The 3rd India is lower-middle class, not English-educated, and cannot afford to come to the US unless illegally. Hence, they do not feature in the earnings statistics and cannot be used for comparison.
The 4th India is of lower socioeconomic class that is mired in illiteracy and extreme poverty there. Often, they are used for taking sensational snapshots of shocking conditions (1:39) which are peddled in apparently realistic, albeit skewed, stories, as if it is fair comparison. But they have very limited mobility both financially and geographically, and therefore, need not be included in this analysis.
Remember, India is one of the most unequal countries in the world, with a large and growing gap between the rich and the poor. Its top groups inherit very rich cultural heritage (music, dress, food, literature, religion, philosophy) and may not feel the draw of other soft alternatives as much.
