No need to cut up and waste a board, just mark off the back of one of the boards in 8" increments and stain each section with the different stains. Make your selection and you can still use the good side of the board.
One more thing to love about this channel….the people we meet in your videos are the people that make America great! It’s awesome to hear the stories from hard working Americans and even better that you can support their livelihoods! I hope the viewers of your channel can bombard them with business!! 🇺🇸
Beautiful wood. Be sure that whatever you do to one side in terms of finish work, be sure to do it to the other side as well to insure it won't move on you. The other thing is if you are going to stain pine BE SURE to use a pre-stain conditioner so you don't get a blotchy uneven surface. Depending on how dark or light you want it, it may require more than one coat of stain to get there with using pre-stain but it will be beautifully even. The other thing that is super important, if you are going to use pre-stain be sure not to miss a spot. The missed spot will come up like a dark streak in comparison. I've seen pine ruined when stained without the pre-stain conditioner. Minwax makes a good one. Love you guys. Thanks for everything you do, and who you are; wonderful people.
MIKE, just a heads up on your wainscoting , before yinz put it up, I found if you seal the backside with a cheaper finish,1 coat (Lacquer or the like) then the boards have a less likely a chance to cup due to the variation of temperature differences between front and back. I finished my entire interior cabin walls 22 years ago with the same 7 1/4 finish widths bought from Starr Lumber, toe nailed (blind nailed) thru the tongue and never had an issue with the boards moving or cupping.
another place that hickory would look great is in the floor of a hot rod /restored pickup box with a real good high gloss stain! when done I hope you are not going to cover it with licence plates, my thoughts put them all over the garage walls and the kitchen ceiling
Great tour of the milling equipment. The last T&G I did was for the grist mill floor. The fellow had an old machine from the 30s that was pulled by an old Allis Chalmers Diesel engine. It’s satisfying work!
Wow you guys was a stone through away when you were in Frenchville. I worked in Clearfield for forty two years so i know that area pretty good, thank you for the great road trip.
Afternoon Mike & Melissa!!! I have knotty pine in my basement. What happens over time is the finish gets darker….so during you selection process you might want to imagine pine siding 5-10 years and more from now as it ages darker…I hope you find this suggestion helpful!
Keeping a mill dust free is essential (and the air) ... as dry wood dust is explosive in a closed area, especially pine ... and remember that when you stain or finish wood indoors ... many a person has lost their life, or building from spontaneous combustion of rags thrown in a heap or bucket, or just simple spark ignition from light switches and machines ... also another good reason to store fuels and combustibles outside in a separate building/shed .... also a good time to access your fire prevention and suppression ... smoke/CO alarms and lots of big fire extinguishers ... and remember, fumes can accumulate in high ceilings over time so you might want an aux vent fan in the roof or soffit .... love the new pine, I have it in my kitchen and one bedroom, it's probably at least 100 years old
Its always nice to go where there is immense pride in their product and surroundings. You will over time evolve in a similar manner and you do take pride in everything you do as I see it in your step or "swagger" as a man who has now held success in his hands
Very cool to see something in my area show up on UA-cam. I live just a couple exits down 80 from there. Ed is a great guy. I bought all the trim and hickory hardwood flooring for my house from him.
Must be so wonderful to be on the road and come across other people who know you by watching your fabulous channel. Beautiful pine for the walls. Another great video, as always. Cheers and strong work!
That was really great!! That man is a REAL wood master. His shop really looked like a demo model. BUTT, with all that clean, all that sharpening, and all that care, you just KNOW he is producing a super quality product. I was drooling over the hickory!! Wishing I could smell what remnants of sawdust were there. Thanks for taking me along. I love it!!
Mike, we just finished our game room above our garage with tongue & groove Red Cedar fencing boards. We finished the bathroom area with tung oil and left the rest to be bare. That tung oil really made the color and grain pop without taking away from the natural beauty of the wood. Good luck!
Hi Mike, that flooring was amazing, when we moved we considered a wood floor but couldn’t find anything we liked, just too expensive and not great quality so went with stone, you are very fortunate to have such great suppliers.
Beautiful lumber it will look amazing when you are done. Thanks for the memories, the shot of Brady's Bend have water ski from the bridge to the dam many times years ago
Nice video of some of the nice views of Pa. I love road trips and this on was valuable as seeing the beautiful lumber you picked up. Thank you for doing it. Wayne
Mike, Melissa, as you know LOL this is a historic day for me I have been trying to get to be one of the first persons that view your videos each day I made it all the way down to #9 YAAAAA. Again thank you for taking us along on your journey
On the finish for the white pine, I recommend Rubio mono coat. We did our quarter sawn white oak floor and it is amazing. It’s a hard wax/oil finish and it still feels like wood, not having a plastic coat over it. I believe it would look amazing natural (no stain) with the mono coat. It would patina over time and be timeless. My .02
@Jeff S.I can really visualize that floor, and over the years, prolly looks awsome! It's hard to get an oil base finish anymore, Used to get Zar satin finish oil based polyurethane by the gallon, now seems all the manufacturers are making water base finishes. The wood doesn't have that amber rich look and the grain doesn't 'pop' with it.
Rubio Monocoat is pretty amazing stuff - It is available tinted and can be used in place of stain. Might be difficult on a vertical surface, since you apply with a squeegie and a buffer.
@@fredcory2686 I used a product called McClosky Gym Coat ( its an oil base), on #2 white oak plank flooring, it's applied with a lambs wool pad. Satin finish when dry, was told it was used on basketball courts. The finish you used, Rubio monocoat, do you wax that finish, or is it a 'one and done' application?
Rubio is a hard wax oil. If you use the accelerator, it is basically dry to the touch when done buffing. Fully cures in about a week. I use it on slab tables. apply very thin coat with a plastic spreader, power buff with a wool pad. You can apply a second coat if desired, but generally not necessary.
Nice trip. A well deserved day off for you guys. Can't imagine driving a truck for 52 years. That lumber you picked up for the game room is beautiful. That place you bought the lumber from was a one of a kind place. Very organized and very clean. Stay safe.

New Hampshire white pine! I love it. I used the same thing in my workshop, v-groove pine. So nice, easy to work with and I urethaned it so it would be shiny and help reflect the light.

I Appreciate You Bringing Us All Along With You For The Little Trip!! All The lumber Was So Gourgous!! Such Beautiful Product He Makes There!! Thank You Melissa For Giving us Another Smile To Get Us Thru The Rest Of The Week!! 😊👍👊
Hey Mike and Melissa, great road trip and a day off for Melissa. Really enjoyed the trip and all the woodworking toys you got to see. That was an awesome mill. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
That guy definitely knew his trade. Great product, that's gonna look snazzy in the building. Again, I love Melissa. I think I need one like her to laugh with.
We have that siding all thru our home. We put 2 coats of polyurathane on it before we installed it. We were done when it was hung. It has turned a very pretty golden color from the sunlight. Can't move any pictures because it is white behind them. The best thing about our walls is we can hang things anywhere we want without looking for a stud.
Great video. My side business Northest Flooring bought wholesale unfinished hardwood flooring mostly out of aNew Jersey . We then instilled sanded and finished. We live in a home of 100% white pine with a clear finish on it. I like the pine look.Try not to hide the pine grain look.
Lots of great comments about staining and sealing both sides of pine boards. I'd add that storing your pine in the area in which it's going to be installed, with the floor heat turned on, for a week or so wouldn't be a bad idea before installing it on the walls. Typically excellent production values and topics, Mike.
You gonna end up with a quarter million dollar, game room and garage. It gets outta hand quick. Especially when you like nice stuff. Love the channel and I hope you and yours get millions of dollars of memories out of there.
I have been keeping track and all in looks like we will end up around 150 or 160, which is crazy however with the price of everything going through the roof thats not bad for almost 3,000sf
Just found another great video. Been thinking of putting down some wood flooring, now I know a place. Always nice to see the interaction with others you deal with. I’m taking notes for my next house. Actually we almost bought land in WV, but settled on some in VA. But want to do a small cabin like you are doing in WV. Unfortunately VA has stricter codes than WV.
Wish it wasn’t so far away from here. I bought some beautiful oak flooring from a reseller in Florida last year, “Hurst Hardwoods”. The flooring was processed by a mill in Tennessee. Who knows where the logs actually were cut. Great episode of OWTM. Thanks . . .
I would think the garage side needs to be 5/8" fire code sheetrock to prevent fire from going into the living/sleeping area. It will have to go up all the way to the roof. Any door between them would also need to be up to fire code, any holes will also need to be fire foamed.
Does every house in America have a full firewall between attached garage and house? Absolutely not! Besides...I don't believe they even have a bedroom in the living area.
@@waynetharp Codes are different everywhere, in my town I had to say a bonus room over the garage was a bedroom because I put a shower in, thus having to make one of my bedrooms in my main house a walk in closet.
