      They are not totally wrong. They simply confused stunted growth with "spinal compression".
      When you wake up, you lose a little bit of height throughout the day because gravity is compressing the tissue and tendons around your bones, and when you go to sleep... gravity is no longer compressing the tissue vertically so your tissue recovers...which brings you back to your original taller height by the time you wake up.
      Lifting weights accelerates spinal compression. So when you are always lifting, your bones and spine are compressed longer in the day than normal people, which may lead to people mistakenly thinking that lifting weights has stunted your growth.

    I think that it might have been beneficial in this video to elaborate on the fact that a calorie deficit can stunt growth. Considering that the desire to gain muscle mass is often linked with an individuals desire to be lean may meant that some people who do weight training operate in a calorie deficit which would stunt growth.
    Also, to highlight that weight training will often require you to increase your daily calories to coincide with increased calorie expenditure with weight training. Otherwise, teens could find stunted growth whilst weight training.

    It may be a good idea to include what the literature is lacking or what direction the research is going in right now; like with the scientific method.
    The reason I say this is because the data you presented did not specify what kinds of resistance training. The high intensity, low intensity, heavy loads, light loads, the type of load, etc etc - may play a role in bone growth/ endplates. I'm sure there are other things in that domain that can be researched more thoroughly. Such definitive answers from your videos to the public is 'risky' for lack of a better word at the moment
    All in all, I like your content! Keep it up. I love the idea of making science more accessible to the public :)

    Please do one on drinking too much water. I drink a gallon a day, some days slightly over, and the comments I receive about wrecking my kidneys is crazy. According to most, anything over 64oz a day is slowly killing you. Never mind the fact that I lift 6 Days a week and add in 20 minutes cardio most days. Or that my proteins are around 1.2 grams of my body weight. My doctor even said to keep water around a gallon. Please bust that myth!!!!

    hmmm, honestly, not convinced. If we look at many gymnasts we can see that they are short in hight. Someone told me that the growth hormones support the muscle growth rather then the hight growth if heavy training happens at an early age. . ... not sure if that is true.

      I also believe gymnastics plays a role.

    • @kdlf333
      @kdlf333 6 років тому +1

      Having been a competitive gymnast for many years, it is very common for young competitive gymnasts to grow after they retire from the sport. I think this is less due to growth “stunting” and more to the extreme level of training in competitive gymnastics that tends to keep gymnasts very lean, which can potentially delay development. That being said, many tall individuals have trouble succeeding in gymnastics so they tend to be weeded out early on. It is certainly an advantage in the sport to be of small stature.

    • @gadgetboyplaysmc
      @gadgetboyplaysmc 6 років тому +1

      Soreness is due to lactic acid. produced in cell respiration. But it does show how much you're putting stress on your muscles. Breaking muscle fibers and making them stronger by eating is pretty much the goal of working out. Cell Respiration basically produces atp or energy for ur body. When you're using your cells they need energy and keep producing that energy. Once a stage in Cell Respiration reaches to a point of anaerobic respiration, it's similar to fermentation that yeasts do except this time instead of alcohol, it's lactic acid. Also I'm no doctor.. this is all from those hours i spent learning general biology.

    Hey Jeff. How about doing a myth busting video on common artificial sweeteners? I know you just did one on sugar but the questions are different, particularly because they are in a plethora of supplements, diet sodas and low calorie foods you’d find in the supermarket therefore applicable to gym goers. So I think you could explain how different each is: ace k, aspartame, sucralpse, stevia, erythritol etc and bust the myth that they cause cancer and link these to the exaggerated rodent studies done on in the 80s. But I think it could be worth mentioning that consuming them might make people crave sweet foods more! I am also curious about whether there can still be an insulinogenic response from the sweet taste in some individuals. An example is how some people feel extremely hungry and get kicked out of ketosis immediately after consuming certain zero calorie sweeteners. Anyway, let us know what you think!

      Rekt., he's making super short videos with a combination of just making stuff up (uh it's a myth originating from the chinese!) and misquoting actual studies (actual studies do not say it's fine for kids to lift if they have an adult present. They say it's fine if you have a professional specifically trained in training children/teenagers after they've been evaluated by a doctor to make sure they don't have certain medical issues that might be a problem).

    I started weightlifting a littlebit at home when i was 13 and i had already been wrestling and comepting for many years so i already had a decent muscle development. However when i started weightlifting people told me that was the reason im so short. But really ive been shorter since i was a small kid and i also resemble my mom alot and she's like 5'2. Im 16 and im around 5'3-5'4 and the doctors estimated i would grow till anywere from 5'6-5'8. I quit wrestling after 12 years and now im weightlifting full time, its going really great and im progressing fast in all compound movements, im also building muscle but im just looking to get a bit more shredded for this summer.

      @axelskillby7109 6 років тому +1

      Enigma B he's 6'0 so i definently feel i resemble my mom more, at least in my length

    • @enigmab5633
      @enigmab5633 6 років тому +1

      It's entirely possible that you resemble your mum more-so than your dad in this respect, yet the distinction between 5'2 and 6'0 is considerable. Through observation, the majority of people do take after their father/a hybrid. Even if you take after your mother, it's quite right that you should expect the upper-end of 5', like 5'8+. The key reason for why females are shorter is due to higher oestrogen than men, so, all things considered, you shouldn't be near your mother's height.
      You're 16. I stopped growing at 16 and, honestly, I attribute that to heavy lifting (5-7 days a week for approx. 6 months) to help with rugby. I suggest an x-ray to check your growth plates, just for closure. I'm not trying to worry you! Whatever happens, happens.

      Enigma B yeah well ive talked to doctors and they say im still growing but im growing pretty slow. Like basically my height and my face is more resembling my mom. Its not like im under developed and shi like i feel im almost gonna peek in my testosterone levels soon. All of a sudden i started growing chest hair and listening to death metal while deadlifting

    Based on my no evidence opinion. I think weight lifting or just stenuous exercise does stunt growth because I had always been taller than my brother and I was growing quickly and doctor said I was going to be quite tall, However when I started doing calisthenics, I started growing a lot more slowly, I know this is normal because I am 16 but everybody is reaching me in height (many classmates and even my younger brother)
    I have no evidence to support that this has been caused by calisthenics& weight lifting but I find it quite possible
    During this time I have eaten well and slept enough, also no alcohol or drugs
    I think industries or youtubers just say its a myth to get more money by teenagers purchasing programs or watching youtube
    And believe me,I was the first one to tell my parents it wont stunt my growth and show them videos like this

      Bro what. Calisthenics is basically built around the pullup and dip right? Well pullups decompress the fuck out of your spine which would be the opposite of what would stop growth. Take this, my brother and dad BOTH weightlifted and now years later so do i. My brother is 6 inches taller than my dad and I'm starting to be taller than him too. All three of us did weightlifting in our youth

    Hey Jeff, great video and great series! I have been reading contradictory things regarding BCAA, including some stuff pretending to be science backed and explaining that it can be detrimental to your gains as it would lower the availability of other amino acids in your blood (from what I understood). I feel like it could make a great video subject if you were looking for one. Cheers!

    Strength training does not stunt growth…. however, maximal lifting (highest weight amount you can lift one to three times) may put you at more risk for injury to the growing areas of a child's body. Therefore, max lifting should be discouraged until after puberty.

    Hi Jeff ! I love your videos and thank you very much for such in depth science regarding proper fitness training and a healthy lifestyle you provide everyone for FREE. My question for today would be: "How many seconds does a rep last/take for the optimum muscle growth ?"- I have seen guys in the gym, beasts, aesthetics...all kinds, that either do VERY FAST reps or VERY slow reps and they (i guess eventually? ) got results as per their body is showing. Looking forward for your next vid and hopefully this question will be answered in the near future or in the comments! Kind regards, Adrian from Germany.
