As a weight training middle school teacher and life long lifter, I appreciate the clear information that should help many parents with this decision about "Can my child lift weights without health issues resulting". I started my kid 19 years ago when he was in the 2nd grade and kept up with his data through the years and it was amazing how he increased in strength even before puberty with high reps and basic movements. I am a firm believer in getting kids started when their young and make it fun. As a result, my two adult kids workout each day as a part of their lifestyle.
I'm really curious about your workout, routine and diet recommendations for both kids and adults. Kudos for getting your kids into an active lifestyle at young ages!
Big help. So glad I watched this! Thanks for this video. I am excited for my 8 year old. My buddy gave me an old, anecdotal wives tale and this shot it down. This is the POSITIVE side of UA-cam.
My 7 sibilins and I all grew up weighlifting because my pops lifted for a german club during the late 80s and early 90s. Both my mom and dad are 5'6 and the 7 children are all taller than they. The shortest one of us stopped lifting in high school and just played football. So if anything it makes you grow. My sister was a former american record holder, Ashley Brito-Snyder as well as my dad, James Snyder. So one can imagine of the many nights as a child I went to bed after getting screamed at for a whimppy effort had only a possotive effect on my bone growth.
most people stop growing in high school anyway. My dad did use to tell me lifting weights would make me short and I believed it back then. Now steroids' will stunt your growth.
being "older"....back in the late 40's early 50's...a leading pediatric researcher was asked about weight training....having no scientific studies to rely on, he went with the only think proven and that was that children injured in car accidents sustained growth plate injuries......he used that to "guess" that the increased stress of weight training might cause the same problems........that same guess he published has become almost fact when repeated from generation to generation. My ten year old benches sets of 95lbs....his mom protested and I said: well then bodyweight is okay....she said yes...so I explained that the dips he did put 115 lbs of pressure (body weight) on his arms....and told her we would be well under that..))
All the male athletes I’ve trained are the same height or taller than their fathers. All the female athletes have reached their mother height or taller. It’s not scientific, but it’s my truth. Accidents and injuries happen. Accidents and injuries happen more often with poor form and instruction.
Till this day, I thought that weight lifting stunted growth because the nutrients I got from my food went to my muscles, rather than focusing on making me taller. Turns out I was just as stupid as I thought to think this was true lol
I am 15 year old and I want to start going to the gym. Are benchpress, legpress, weighted squats and weighted calfraises going to stunt my growth? I am 180 (6ft) but I really wanna grow tall to about 195 (6'5)
As one of 6 boys that grew up to be of different heights, the tallest of us was the skinniest in his teens years, total weight ( muscle or fat) is inversely related to your end height, the thicker you are as a kid the less growth you'll get, all other things equal
I asked my orthopedic doctor today and he told me that lifting heavy weights at the age of 15 more than twice a week can cause the growth plates to pre maturely close and stunt your growth.
I understand that this person is a doctor, but that is not accurate, or else you would not have strength athletes that weight train since they are children grow to be over 2 meters tall. The training must be overseen by a professional who selects weights that correspond with that athlete's skill level and it is safe. We have an athlete who can clean and jerk over 300 lbs at age 13 and he has been growing at the normal rate of a child his age and given the height of his parents, he isn't going to be exceptionally tall, to begin with. That being said he will probably be around 6 feet tall when he is done growing which is slightly above average for American adult males. I hope this was helpful to you 👍
@@GarageStrength Thank you so much. What do you think is a safe amount of time to workout per week? How many days and hours per day? And should these workouts be free weight or machine based?
I had a growth spurt when I was 40 because of squatting. Lifting weights gave me coordination to play basketball. My cousin a doctor won’t lift weights. You know why ? Because flawed knowledge. You will grow taller by two factors nutrition and genetics.

i want to start workout but i need an answer to my question ⁉️ will lifting weights affect growth in a bad way? i want to lift 4kg dumbels in each hand im 10 and around 5.3 foot

I don’t know what to believe with this . Iam a twin identical. I lifted my brother swam. Iam an inch and a half shorter. Also I was big on arms . I wanted big arms . Worked out a lot got bigger . My arms are shorter than his. Like. 1/2 inch with is a lot . We both have same torso size but I’m like I said I’m shorter . We are identical. Everything else is same . So I want to believe this but not sure .

Great video. But how is it that gymnast kids are all incredibly short? There’s no denying the amount of 4ft 9 and 5ft 1 gymnast. It’s the major majority of them. That’s my only concern….I have three little kids. Gymnasts may not lift traditional weights. But with their strong muscles…clearly comes super short athletes
Its an aptitude thing...shorter people have lower centers of gravity which makes better gymnast, hence they stick with it longer and are able to be competitive. you end up with most competitive gymnast being short. Its like saying that basketball players are all tall thus jumping for a ball makes you taller
I wouldn't take any medical advise from a youtuber. I come from a family of three siblings. Two of which are boys. I'm 6'4", my youngest brother is 6'5" and my midle brother is 6". He's one of the shortest males in my fathers side of the family. He was obsessed with working out with weights. We all realize now that him working out in our garage gym completely messed up his height.
Basically height is overvalued particularly by women in dating! Those who are brutally strong tend to be not usually people who are considered tall. It is due to their genetics and diet/application as to whether they will succeed as a strength athlete. The Russians have completed studies on their weightlifters that shows that height only offers advantage in athletes up to six foot tall. This can be verified by those who care to read The Weightlifting Compendium.

I have a hypothesis that it actually helps with growth. I grew from 5'9" to 5'10" when I started lifting weights at 30.
