  • Michael Jackson's bid to purchase the Elephant Man's bones was a tabloid story that spread like wildfire and only added to the pop singer's already bizarre public image. Jackson consistently denied the claim, stating that the rumor was completely fabricated by opportunistic journalists looking to make a quick buck.
However, in the years since evidence has surfaced that Michael may have been behind the infamous story, and the true extent of his interest turn obsession with the elephant man, and his bones, have been revealed.

Michael's favorite quote from the movie about Merrick's life is "I'm not an animal, I'm a Man!"
I think that says a lot...

+RihaPregels You hear the echo when Mike told Barbara Walters in 1997: "I'm not a Jacko, I'm Jackson".
Same exact weight & meaning to what John Merrick said.

MJ saw a lot of himself in The Elephant Man. Like him, MJ was a victim of his own fame; trapped by it and never being a person, just a personality. But at least now they're both at peace; free from the press. Great video from the detail. Long live the King of Pop, and the Elephant Man. 🎉

I think the point of the video is that they aren’t truly at peace, they are still dehumanised and used to make money from.

Absolutely chilling yet amazing video ❤ I can 100% say that no one has ever lived a life like he had! Facts: he was the most famous person on the PLANET. He could NEVER escape fame since childhood. Imagine the trauma of your earliest formative years with all that pressure and then you live the ENTIRE rest of your life with even more fame and less privacy. Literally anywhere he went, even his last months, paparazzi and fans were inescapable. His History album is entirely abour this. Its no wonder he could relate so much to the Elephant Man. It was like living everyday everywhere like you're a walking circus. R.I.P. King of Pop 🖤

I always felt looking at him after a few of his surgeries he looked soo beautiful around 82/85. He never needed any surgery after that. The bad album cover is where he should have stopped completely before taking it too far 😔 I know a girl who is so beautiful the way she is but even after getting her lips and nose done i keep trying to tell her she’s perfect as she is but she just will not listen. Michael definitely suffered from this.

I don’t know if it’s that exclusively, but Michael definitely felt like a prisoner of his own body in various ways due to his fame and his conditions/injuries. I think that’s part of the reason why he liked disguises and prosthetics so much.
And a fact about Joseph Merrick that I think goes overlooked is that one of Merrick’s jobs was being a door-to-door salesman, having to disguise his striking appearance. That somewhat mirrors Michael’s experience as a Jehovah’s Witness where he did the same thing while proselytizing door-to-door. It’s a very particular connection that’s not shared by many people.

I honestly never knew of the Elephant Man story until this video (never cared to look into it.) Man this is sad and honestly if Mike wanted to buy his remains, I too believe it was to "free" the Elephant Man from his never ending display. Reminds me of the story of Sarah Baartman's body (very voluptuous African woman displayed as a freak show in the 19th century in Britain).

even if it were true, I don't see why it should be so controversial. The bones are on display in a hospital, why can't they be on display somewhere in an exhibition owned by MJ? He could tie his story to the display, perhaps garnering some much needed understanding of his own struggles with loneliness. He would've had a very solid reason for wanting the remains. The only thing that made it controversial is the way the tabloids presented it, along with any other move he made during his life.

Except at the time he was looking to purchase the skeleton in the 80's during the Thriller era, he was at the height of his success and considered a very attractive man; he was not considered a "freak". He was an empathetic and compassionate man who felt others' pain deeply and could relate to the Elephant man because of their shared experience of being a public spectacle and loneliness because of it.
