Gruene Hall, TX 1995. The bathroom was behind the stage. I was headed back and Ray's guitars were all there. His guitar tech was getting things ready for the show. I stopped and stared in amazement. He grabbed one and said here - you want to hold it? I said no - I declined. I was too scared I'd drop it and people were squeezing by a narrow area going and coming to the bathroom. After the show Ray and the rest of the band stuck around for autographs. I've still got my t-shirt signed by them all, CD cover and pictures. Great memories.
I've seen Asleep at the Wheel live and met Ray Benson. Nice guy. Also met Cindy Cashdollar when I saw her perform with Sonny Landreth. She's a class act, too.
Thanks John & the crew, that was a REAL treat. Love to Cindy from the UK (great instructional material too btw) and of course huge respect for the big man RB himself - music fun to make the world go round! Thank you!
Cindy’s points about the physical nature of playing non-pedal steel is true because you to do everything with the bar. But I also wonder if part of it is the tuning. I started on C6 Lapsteel and Dobro. When I graduated to a D10 pedal steel I never really used pedals. The only one I use is my 1st pedal which raises my A strings whole step. I do about every with slants and bar moves. C6 just sound better to me when played like a console. Great video. I would love to see more Steelers. We are getting old. We need to inspire some younguns.
At 2:00, Danny Gattan and Roy Buchanan enter the conversation. I never heard anything truly musical from Roy despite all his technique ---- but I'm a big Danny Gatton fan.

Cindy is both a national treasure and a very lovely person.......and she knows her business like nobody else!.......
Good to see Cindy Cashdollar featured :)
Ray & Cindy! Two of my faves, right there
Great Rundown. One of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard is the sound of Cindy’s original vintage Weissenborn.

Gonna see them tomorrow night for the umpteenth time.. God Bless Ray Benson.

Thanks, it's so cool to be able to see what they play and the effects they use. They seem like great folk and I enjoyed listening to them.

One of the best episodes. Congratulations
Great rundown! Love that Tele! Ray being 6’7’’ and now realizing John is way taller than I imagined
Fantastic.
So glad to have Mr. Shaw make an appearance.
Great Rundown, fantastic talent (Both Artist and Designer).
Great dive into his rig! I could listen to his stories all day!
Cindy, you are the Best, I have a 1950's Supro Lap Steel tuned to C6, and i try to play like you, I love your playing, Cousin Figel
Best rig rundown since Mike Peters and Beck. Great job Big John!
Is there a place I can go and just listen to Ray Benson talk? I love the music, but there's a VOICE!
I could listen to Ray sing the phone book. Oh wait we don't have phone books anymore. I guess he could sing my contact list.
Okay, now that you've interviewed Cindy Cashdollar, you guys need to do Junior Brown! (And Meghan Lovell of Larkin Poe as well).
Loved watching this Texas Legend. Awesome Ray you play Music My dad and I enjoy
Perfect timing! I'm about to get Cindy's both DVDs about Western Swing Steel.
What a fun interview! Great hang vibes!
This is the first rig rundown where the guitarist is actually taller than john , He’s actually looking up rather than down
I would absolutely love an Eric Church rig rundown!!
Millennial Falcon.
Very cool Rig Rundown. Loved it !

Ray is a treasure. Love seeing him around Gruene Hall. Thanks for the rundown.
John Huey was from Elaine, Arkansas.
Jamming out with the Millennial Falcon, hell yeah lmao!!
man... Collings makes some damn fine guitars.
Brakes are good, tires are fair😊
At 26:25, wouldn't a Harmony Strat-O-Tone have DeArmond pickups, not Barcus Berry pu's?
At 2:00, Danny Gattan and Roy Buchanan enter the conversation. I never heard anything truly musical from Roy despite all his technique ---- but I'm a big Danny Gatton fan.
Hey Ray, knurled metal knobs work really good for the volume swell thing. ( Yeah right, like I’m gonna tell Ray Benson something about guitar..) 🙄
That was smashing.
John plays a mean steel guitar himself
Ray and Willie wear the same collonge.
I think Jamieson (Jr) Brown played with them in 1970's.
Ray is is 7' 3"!
What's the value on this pot?
"It's 250"
And I don't know what that means, but
anyone notice, there every guitar has matching guitar stripe.
Man if Benson is 6’7” then Bohlenger must be no slouch himself.
Guild was made in Rhode Island.
Yes! Westerly!
That tele still looks small on him 😂
Somebody taller than John?! Tim is probably 6'1" but you'd never know lol
He used heavy strings to get a better sound
Is Billy Gibbons hold my beer
Helena arkansas, King biscuit
Ace Ventura forever
Did you name that Tele? She's a real "Fat Bottomed Gal" Nice interview as usual John! :)
