  • Buzzcocks are one of the most talented bands to come out of the punk explosion. Their songs, including ‘Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone you Shouldn’t’ve)’, ‘Orgasm Addict’ and ‘Boredom’, endure as pop classics.
Original members Steve Diggle and Pete Shelley and manager Richard Boon came to the British Library on 9 June 2016 to talk to radio host, journalist and Classic Albums Sundays founder Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy interspersed with vinyl playbacks of some of their best music.
Find out more about the British Library’s free exhibition, Punk 1976-78, celebrating the 40th anniversary of this exciting musical phenomenon: www.bl.uk/punk-....

I could listen to Pete Shelley talk all night. Such a lovely, intelligent and gentle man with a wonderful voice, and what an ear for melody! Buzzcocks were like no other band of the time. From the get go they were completely themselves.

In the early 80s there was a serious and brutal 'war' between Teds and Punks in Amstderdam. I was there and knew nothing about it. ( I'm a german ). I walked with my girlfriend to buy me a Rockabilly Jacket at the Flea Market. I wanted to look like Johnny Rotten. I had bleached blond Hair and considered myself as a Punk. I put some of my Badges on the Jacket and we went to the central city. In a Shop, some of the Mohawks saw me in my half-Teddyboy-Style and came over to grab me. Than he saw my Buzzcocks-Pin and let me go. I was a tiny, weak little Kid and got almost shitting my Pants. I still have this Buzzcocks Badge, that saved me. 😂

1:26:55 Wow! Pete Shelley sums up what punk meant to him "For me it was about being an active participant in your culture rather than being a passive consumer, I'll have that on my headstone"

Unlike the Pistols, The Buzzcock's song lyrics were nearly always about love of some sort. Pete was the mastermind of the band and luckily i got to meet Pete after a gig at The Kirklevington Country Club near Yarm. We had a good chat about music and the gig. Great bloke and will be sadly missed by Buzzcocks fans. God bless ya Pete. R.I.P

@@rubyredjeans well that is great, thank you for sharing your memories! When I heard Homosapien for the first time, I was really blown away by the new sound and art direction; i.e., the video for said song. There is some kind of lurking message, in & over above the lurid onslaught of imagery that is interesting in itself. Wow, it's late and I'm well stoned, going to watch it now. Are you in Oz then? There is no The. It's Buzzcocks, that's it. That was the point. There had already been The Kinks, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pete Shelley deliberately dropped the definitive article so that Buzzcocks were new, and nothing to do with what had come before

I saw Buzzcocks perform live in concert quite past their key years of punk. I saw them in 1989 and 1993 here in San Diego, and man did they rock out. Two of the best rock music shows I have ever attended! At the 1989 show, the audience became so enthused and rollicking that the first 4 rows of folding seats and occupants collapsed backwards in a heap. Must have been akin to the momentum of their earlier days of shows, I felt. Just loved them, and especially how melodic they could be.

I love punk music, pop, electronic, and rock. That said, the absolute worst thing we can do is make any of it a mainstay in mainstream academia. It’s supposed to be marginal, rebellious, and on the fringes. Punk was born of poverty, anger, and frustration. The guys on that stage did what they did because they were skinny, hungry, and messed up in the head. The minute you put them up on a pedestal it’s over, and not only that, our culture itself is corrupted. I say stop patting them on the back, throw these lunatics out on the street, and it might create a punk revival. Kudos, by the way, to whoever f-ed up the audio on that mic. It proves my point.

US and UK are not that dissimilar. Spent 22 years in UK. Humour is somewhat different. Uk humour more dry and darker. UK a bit more politically aware. Class system in UK is horrific. Uk poverty is every bit as bad as USA. Punk ethos have strong elements in both countries. Punk music originated in USA (MC5, Stooges, Ramones, etc.) Mclaren then copied and packaged elements of the ”look”.

Totally agree about Boon. I was desperate to leap into the screen, drag him off the stage and lock him in a soundproofed room. As well as his interrupting, everything about him - the way he spoke, gesticulated and sat - creeped the hell out of me.

I kinda liked their artwork for the picture covers, bold colours straight lines and shapes and Buzzcocks awkwardly placed. Certainly different.
