When these children grow up they’ll most likely feel a sense of disappointment towards their parents. What some parents fail to realize is that the way they raise their children will have a lasting impact on their lives. Knowledge is power, and by denying their children the opportunity to learn, they are holding them back from progressing and participating in their community and age group. It seems as though the parents are confusing structure and social processes with enslavement, which is an extreme view. By denying their children access to literacy, they are taking a step back from everything that we as a society have achieved and accomplished collectively. Literacy is a fundamental skill that opens up opportunities for personal and professional growth, and it is essential for navigating the world around us.

I understand that every parent has the right to raise their children as they see fit, but I believe that every child deserves the chance to learn and grow to their fullest potential. Denying them the opportunity to learn how to read and write may have serious long-term consequences.

@@Jessicamorel1991- Parts of the brain actually atrophy, if they aren't used. So, not only will their children be less proficient at reading and writing than most of their peers - they will struggle to learn how to read and write after puberty begins (when the brain reconfigures and gets rid of unused connections to become more efficient). They will likely also struggle with the fine motor skills required for handwriting.
By the way, there are and should be limits on how parents and legal guardians raise their children. In the U.S., education is compulsory for 1st through 8th grades. I'm pretty sure that not giving children access to learning reading and writing would violate the law. You can teach kids that the Earth is only 6K years old and that the story of Adam and Eve is literally true, but I'm pretty sure that you also have to try to teach them to read and write.

I'm lightweight upset with my parents that they didn't teach me to read before I started kindergarten. My mom said that people didn't know any better at the time, but I know that some people did. And when my sister started kindergarten, 5 years later, the school expected her to be able to read (so, she had to catch up). But both of my parents worked at some points before I started school, and they didn't have the internet and easy access to teaching materials like we have today. So, I'm only lightweight upset about that. It's more so being upset with the situation than with them.
What really pissed me off was my mother talking about my wife and I behind our backs, claiming that we make our kids learn all of the time, don't let them have fun, and don't let them just be kids. None of that has ever been true, and it wouldn't even make sense to try to force little kids to learn all of the time because they don't have the attention span or the motivation and you'll only turn them off from learning (at least academiclearning). We used short sessions, often playing games, to help them learn how to read, write, do basic math, etc. when they were little, and now they're doing really well in school and doing a lot of learning on their own. I get feeling that one hasn't done enough as a parent - I feel that way every day. But it's foul to twist that into other people doing too much (especially when it's your own child parenting your own grandchildren).

      @@loki2240 😆@ lightweight.
Some parents believe learning starts with the teacher... that's what they're paid to do, and figure they know more. Others have internal issues pertaining to education that's subconsciously projected outward, and/or do what their parents did. Learning can be fun. Ask your kids and add balance. As for mom, don't be "lightweight", but address the issue about gossiping and how it affects you. Anything concerning you, speak directly.

    • @loki2240
      @loki2240 Рік тому +1

@@janedough6410 - Your advice about gossiping is very good. But I prefer to just let it go because she's old and unlikely to change, she could die any time, and we live in different states - so I prefer to keep our interactions "pleasant" (even if I'm holding back). Plus, she would be able to guess the sibling who told me about her comments.
My wife and I are going to continue to try to help prepare our kids for life in the modern world, and she and one of my other siblings can continue to deal with their feelings of inadequacy in dysfunctional ways (the third person in the conversation was a sibling who actively discouraged her daughter from learning and enjoying books, then later had to pay for supplemental instruction to help her catch up with her classmates, and her daughter is still dealing with feelings of academically and intellectually inadequate in high school). I was hurt in addition to being pissed, but I don't want to invite more of their dysfunction into my life, let alone my wife's and our children's. I have my own dysfunction to deal with. 😆

Also, not teaching kids how to read or write is basically making them a stain on society. Most people who can't read or write grow up to be criminals, druggies, and beggars from a lack of education. @@janedough6410 Well, there is more to the story but I wasn't trying to write a thesis. After seeing them home during the day quite often, when I would go by the house for x,y,z...I say, "Did you go to school today?" They would say, "We didn't get to go today, maybe next week." I don't think that is normal. I speak with the father when we pass by, the mother is pretty quiet and preggars with their 3rd. Something just isn't right. I won't name the state, but this is happening in a state where natives get away with not going to school and their parents are not fined or jailed like other states. They look caucasian but they are natives and they half live off the land and half got to work like us westerners (to them that's any race that is not native and follows western society rules). They take their kids with them for subsistence living but the kids usually can't write or do math and they read very slowly. I used to teach these same type of kids. So, either they're pulling the ish I'm used to, they are learning from home sometimes, or they're in the witness protection program. Either way, they're going to grow up to be a stain on society. One of them is kinda bad, the oldest one is very sweet but they're both the cutest. Also, if I was going to "overstep" as you say, I would've done that months ago. Because I don't know what's going on, I've continued to mind my business. However, those with less education do, in fact, because criminals, beggars, and druggies. That's not to say that all criminals don't have an education.

Native American tribes are held to a separate standard/set of rules than the US. I cannot enforce my standards and way of life upon another (like colonizers). If I truly care about the child, I would contact their council and/or volunteer my time educating according to their tribe. But first I need to educate myself before intervening.

It's exactly the reason why so many conservatives despise college because the children come home open to a wide perspective of the word. It's why they banning books that been available in schools for 40+ years. They want to stop the younger generation from opening their minds. All the comments on here showing concern for how the kids will be when they grow up, the jobs they will secure- acting like school is churning out all top notch, smart people who go on to achieve greatness. 😄 Please.
Unschooling does not DENY a child the ability to read but EMPOWERS them to do so WHEN they choose. If you are thinking that a kid will never choose to learn, that's because your frame of reference is you/your own kid, products of the education system that stifles children's natural curiosity and demands conformity.
I unschool my kids. My 4 year old reads proficiently because he WANTED to learn to read. Unprompted, he fills his day working on puzzles, reading books he checked out from the library about dinosaurs, playing, and, more recently, creating circuits to power lights. More importantly, my kids can hold a conversation with anyone, work collaboratively with one another, can apply reason and persuasion when speaking, and are overall kind, fun human beings. All of this is possible because I allow my kids the autonomy to direct their learning while I support them, assist them and help create an environment of learning for them everyday. So please don't call me a lazy or neglectful parent when all you do is cart your kid off to school while you hope and pray they turn out ok.

You’re right that the education system we live in doesn’t rise to the occasion. However, you have to understand no system is perfect. It does educate the children. Now parents need to understand that somethings you need to teach to your children. In fact, the parents of argue that somethings they should teach their children and schools shouldn’t teach their children. Sex education for example, who does a better job teaching a child sex education the school or the parent? Many parents argue they should be the ones to teach their child sex education. Here’s the funny thing when you look at who does a better job at teaching children, sex education we see less teen pregnancy when we allow the school system to teach children sex education. When we actually sick children down and discuss STDs and pregnancy and the cost associated with these things fewer teens get pregnant. You can see it on the Democratic administrations when we poured money into sex education teen pregnancy dropped like a rock look at the Obama administration for proof. The moment we stopped pouring money into teen pregnancy and sex. Education kids were getting pregnant again. Go look at the Bush administration. Look at the Trump administration. You literally see the change almost overnight.
The problem with the education system in America is we the government and the citizens don’t put enough resources into it You’ll have parents all the time so teachers aren’t paid enough money, but as soon as someone says, I need to raise your taxes so we can pay these teachers more money. I don’t raise my taxes. If someone were to come to many of you right now, and say we want to raise your taxes so that we can teach other children not yours but other school districts most people say no don’t raise my property taxes to teach children in another school district. So we end up with broken systems.
Right now child can come into the classroom and be prepared to do 10th grade math, but only be an 8th greater. Child ready to go beyond where they normally should be academically speaking. We have no system in place to help their child. We literally would tell their child well you may be ready for 10th grade level math, but you need to wait. Sit here try not to get bored don’t cause a scene complete the work that we already know you excel at doing and shouldn’t be doing. We also have the opposite a child could come in to the 10th grade and not be ready for that level of material. We have no system in place to say hey you’re not ready for this let’s put you in front of material you are ready for and bring you up to speed. We don’t have the resources for that. In either case you would need, an additional teacher or some additional resources to put in front of that child and we don’t have it. We won’t spend the money on it but if we did, they would be exponential returns on the investment.

It's a strong no for me. My child will not be 10 just writing his name. When he decides to attend school, that will be one big kid in kindergarten. ... And those kids have no filter.
