So, the story *does* acknowledge the potential implications of such relationships......but not for Kotal and Jade for some reason? He doesn't even meet Revenant Jade in Story Mode. *Why?!* That's a massive fucking plot hole.
He can be portrayed as really hardcore at times (so it fits Outworld and MK in general), but still quite noble, just and not a narcissist megalomaniac like Shao Khan.
Agreed. This is likely the closest I've come to tolerating it just because the relationship felt so out of place & tacked on *and* because Jade (finally) deserved better than KK's unfortunately official self.
I always find it weird that Raiden supposedly beats Liu Kang in every timeline despite the Midway era and even MK9 itself implying Liu is the stronger of the two.
@RooByrne MK1: Raiden straight-up has to lose to Liu Kang as both were competitors in the tournament. Of course, later retcons made Raiden exempt, but in the original story Liu Kang won that fight. MK2-DA: Liu Kang was the one who defeated Shao Kah twice and even Shinnok, something Raiden fails to do, and he was powerful enough that the Deadly Alliance had to pull a sneak attack to kill him while they beat Raiden in a straight fight. Deception/Armageddon: Liu Kang loses to Raiden here, but it's important to remember he was a mindless Zombie at the time. MK9: Raiden gets bitchslapped by Shao Kahn and even with the Elder God amp initially failed to damage him. Meanwhile Liu Kang kicked his ass and fisted him through the chest.
@@jamainegardner4193 Raiden single-handedly defeated Shinnok and sealed him in the Netherealm. So it's outright false to say Raiden failed to beat him. Raiden survived longer than Liu Kang did against the Dealy Alliance. But when he did lose he came back, since he's an immortal God, and blew them both up, along with the army they had just finished ressurecting. The only reason Onaga survived was because of the Kamidogu. Everything else in the area got obliterated. Raiden was the one leading the defense against Shinnok's assault on the Heavens in MK4. Liu Kang may have been the one to finish Shinnok, but Raiden and even Fujin were there helping. Zombie Liu Kang is said to retain his knowledge of martial arts, being on par with his soul as the two clashed perfectly equal in Kang's Deception ending. Neither able to get the upper hand.

Both MK4 and MKX actually show Shinnok rendering Raiden powerless. 2: Raiden lasted longer but again, Liu Kang had to be surprise attacked by Quan Chi while Shang Tsung acted as a distraction/punching bag. Shao Kahn was also someone the sorcerers had to take by surprise. 3: Onaga didn't even need the Kamidogu as they weren't on his person in the intro. Raiden also isn't immortal and failed to take the sorcerers at the same time. 4: This would point to Zombie Liu Kang being half as strong as MK1-DA LK _at best._ 5: I even forgot to mention that Armageddon and MK9 both have Liu Kang's ending be about him kicking Raiden's ass and becoming the new god of EarthRealm.
@@jamainegardner4193 Raiden isn't powerless in MK4. Maybe you're thinking of MK3 where Raiden is yeeted into the void since the Outworld Gods had taken over Earthrealm due to the merger. In MK4 Raiden leads the charge against Shinnok and saves the Elder Gods from him. Doesn't mean the DA couldn't have overpowered Kang eventually. And Raiden had defeated Shang Tsung if I remember correctly, and Tsung had to absorb souls from the soulnado to recharge in order to get back up and fight Raiden. Raiden still went toe -to-toe with the DA and killed them in the end. Raiden is immortal. He's a God. Gods in MK are immortal. What are you even talking about? The only way Onaga was able to be defeated was to destroy the kamidogu first. Shujinko had collected all of them for him, right before Onaga revealed himself and then went of to meet Raiden and the DA. The end of the Konquest mode leads straight into the intro cinematic. Both of those Kang endings are non-canon. Same with all the other people who supposedly killed bosses in MK games, who lore-wise would actually have zero chance of doing so. Liu Kang is a powerful and great warrior and had some amazing wins. But don't dismiss Raiden, especially not original timeline Raiden. He had as many great feats and wins and had successfully defended Earthrealm for millions of years. Sure, it might've come close sometime, but Earthrealm was always saved.
I know he's largely irrelevant to the plot and doing this would probably be a waste of time, but seeing a fight between older present Erron and young past Erron could have been neat and the dynamic of the past damage transferring to present Erron would have made things more interesting. Also you can do the cowboy quickdraw duel trope.
It could have been fun to have the cowboy duel as a QTE if MK11 had some. Hell, maybe that's how the fight ends and if you fail, the Erron you're playing dies.

If you're playing Present Erron, then winning means he successfully disarms his Past-self while losing means that Past Erron kills Present Erron.

If you don't press shot he gets shot, If you shoot at The wrong timing he accidentaly kills his past self, in turn himself, and If you play as past Erron you can Just fail by not pressing to shoot. It’s interesting that you touched on the idea of R. Kitana being distraught about the death of R. Jade, because it would make more sense. However in the story dialogue, R. Jade blames her death on being friends with Kitana… but still fights on the same side as her…. Clearly her point of view is warped by magic but even so, what?
It's like how R.Sindel is pissed at past Nightwolf while the R.Nightwolf is standing right next to her or how R.Kitana is fighting alongside Shao Khan, they really didn't put a lot of thought or logic in anything.
Yeah, these ideas are a lot better than what we got. The bad guys really need Ws of their own to actually be intimidating. Even though that will never happen with how Netherealm writes their villains.
I guess I'll throw my hat into this and make this suggestion for the Jax section: Jax and his daughter prepare to leave after getting the crown but Jax pauses and tells her to go ahead where the older Jax steps out, not wanting Jacqui to see him like this. The younger understands and fights revealing that the upgrades basically make Jax even in terms of power, the fight ending with Older Jax being unable to keep up due to staminia and younger Jax losing one of his cyber arms but manages to get away. (Likely from both men punching the other). Meanwhile Jacqui fights the avatar using the crown. Jax arrives and accidentally distracts her with his battle damage and she is caught in a hole. Older Jax arrives and convinces the younger one to give the crown to save his daughter though his daughter now hates him. Story continues as usual but now young Jax out for the story due to his busted arm though Kronica does de-age current Jax to his prime so you now have a new skin for him. He fights Raiden as usual and realizes his mistake and switches sides once more, though Geras arrives and steals his youth as punishment so he is back to his current age. If you want to go a step further you can even have Jax sacrifice himself to tackle Geras off the boat into the sea of blood. I followed the rules of NR: Heroes always win Shock for shock More skins to monetize And I get judged in the comments.
Well said snake. Looking back at the Chapters system , it was limited and didn’t explore more characters & character moments and only allowed select people to progress the story. And those people being the good guys & not the villains to get some wins.
It literally makes the revenants look pointless when they just get bodied for the sake of the good guys winning. I loved your ideas of how more dynamic character relationship could have been, like for example if Noob Saibot and Frost battle for the sake of getting to potentially killing Sub-Zero in order to take over the Lin Kuei with Scorpion intervening. Hopefully MK1 does something right with another reboot after MK11 just being written into a corner.
I wish we could have played as Baraka in story mode especially since he and kitana had a truce. Sure it would have slowed the narrative pace but christ let the bad guys be playable!!!
Just a few criticisms: 1: It makes sense that Raiden defeats Liu Kang every single time because he's a God with literally billions of years of training and experience over Liu Kang. This is one of the few retcons that I actually support and it makes sense that full gods aren't allowed to participate in the Mortal Kombat tournament. The only exception being MK3 because in Trilogy Raiden was forced to relinquish his Godhood temporarily. While it would weaken his powers it wouldn't rob him of them completely. Shao Kahn is another exception because it's never stated if he was ever a full God or not. But even as a demigod he's been absorbing souls for eons. A better explanation would be that he underestimated Liu Kang in MK2 leading to his defeat. So in MK3 Raiden trains Liu Kang and the others harder so now he can defeat Shao Kahn who's now expecting him to be strong enough for a serious fight while also helping Raiden make himself stronger in case Liu Kang can't defeat Shao Kahn. Although arguably Revenant Liu Kang should have defeated Raiden because his powers are weaker in the netherrealm and Revenant Liu got an Amp from absorbing the soul of his past self. Although it could also be argued that him absorbing the soul of his past self reawakened the real Liu Kang inside the Revenant, making him subconsciously hold back because his true self knows that Kronika is evil and is the one truly responsible for setting him and Raiden against each other. However this new timeline with Fire God Liu Kang can shake that up as Raiden is mortal and Liu Kang is the literal Elder/Titan God of fire, lightning and time. Like he's the fusion of Talos and Akatosh from the Elder Scrolls games. 2: By your logic Kung Lao is stronger than both Raiden and Liu Kang because in MK9 he defeated Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, something neither Raiden or Liu Kang could do. Then again powerscaling is off because Kung Lao who was older and more experienced in Deadly Alliance lost to these same two sorcerers unless you want to argue that they had him fight Onaga's army. And Raiden damn well nearly defeated the Deadly Alliance even though his powers are weaker in Outworld. Something stated multiple times. Also Onaga was only stronger than everyone because he had the Kamidogu. He needed multiple literal maguffins to be strong enough to tank Raiden's self destruct move. 3: D'vorah is a villain sue who needs to die in a fire. In spite of her losses she's a karma hodini who never suffers for her actions. If anyone should have been killed in Aftermath it should have been her by Shao Kahn's hands because he was pissed over Mileena. 4: Hanzo doesn't need to lose his powers to lose to his past self. He could simply just hold back prompting Scorpion to ask why he's holding back, showing how wise Hanzo has become. This is yet another instance where D'vorah should have died after she kills Hanzo. 5: Sindel is a can of worms that's been dissected to death and even you have given a better reason for her to side with Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn. If she had been faking a heel turn to kill Shao Kahn and revealed that she was secretly good the whole time would give her a better story than her always being evil and blindly trusting Shang Tsung who's been known to be one of if not the biggest backstabber in the entire MK universe. It also gives us an excuse to bring in a second Revenant Sindel from the past to stop her resurrected self, flipping the script where the Revenant can kill the living version but not the other way around. While she came out later it would have been interesting to see a Revenant Mileena who's bonded with the Revenants of Kitana and Sindel while still being angry about her death and Tanya's. This could lead to present Sindel trying to reach out to past Mileena who ultimately saves her from her Revenant self since if she kills the Revenant she'll cease to exist. 6: Speaking of mirror matches, where's one for Bi-Han? If we’re bringing in characters from the past why not bring in MK1 Sub-zero and have him confront his wraith self. Noob Saibot thinks it's Quai Lang at first before he hears his own human voice. Human Bi-Han then unmasks revealing that he's learned about his future from Raiden and seaks to prevent it. Depending on player choice Sub-zero can defeat Bi-Han or Noob Saibot can defeat him but not kill him because Quan Chi for some reason isn't around which is also why the Revenants can't kill their living selves. Either way Hanzo and Quai Lang interfere, and are shocked that human Bi-Han is there. This also gives him needed screen time with his brother and Hanzo. Leading to him needing to earn their trust as he tries to becoming a slave to Shinnok. He'd also try to mend his relationship with his brother as well as earn Hanzo's forgiveness, showing that after seeing he truly is trying to change. Side note: Also, why can't Noob Saibot ever win a fight?! For the love of the Elder Gods he was able to somehow defeat 4 literal gods as Sub-zero yet he loses to freaking Scorpion whom he's defeated not only as a specter but in Hell once before, then ends up jobbing to everyone including Stryker, his younger brother and even Jaquie! "Quan Chi used the best parts of me." my ass! With the final insult being that Fujin defeats him in Aftermath and then rubs salt in the wound by stripping him of all credibility. Overall: Not a bad video but there are many points I disagree with. Then again MK11 is the definition of wasted potential. {Yes I'm still bitter we never got Cyrax and Sektor as playable characters even though they're almost done in the game files! How about you believe in your own brand instead of wasting slots on 5 special guest characters, three of which don't even fit! They could have kept this game going until we had every character in it. The fact we didn't get another "Everyone is here" game is a crime.}

I think Kabal is one of the most wasted revenants. It would have been cool for a Revenant to actually defect to the good guys side playing on the good nature that exists in side of him winning out like it did before. If scorpion can change his path I don’t see why the Revenants couldn’t either especially since Quran Chi is dead
@RooByrne yeah that’s how they became human again what I’m mostly focusing on is noob saibot and scorpion were both created by Quan Chi but both characters have shown desires outside of their “master” I wanted some of that for at least 1 of the Revenants. They are all always super bad and super tied to the hip of insert current big bad. None of them seem to have wants outside of serving which is weird since their masters are both dead
For the Scorpion/Hanzo fight, I would have thought it better if D'vorah had been replaced with Noob Saibot, to have Hanzo confront his past mistake. Noob chastises Hanzo for only being regretful he lost his chance to regain his clan, only to be angrily rebuked by Hanzo, who defeats him, but is soon after ambushed by Scorpion. After winning, Hanzo refuses to kill his past self, but in doing so leaves himself open to Noob, who gets the drop on Hanzo, and kills him. Scorpion, seeing his future self killed by Noob Saibot, is disturbed, and decides to listen to Hanzo, who goes into further detail about his regrets for killing Bi Han. How it was a short sighted move that may have satisfied his clan honour, but at the cost of ever seeing the ones he loved so much. And how this painful experience, and rash actions against Quan Chi, have taught him to think twice before ever taking another life. Because the consequences of thoughtless action remain for far longer than the deed itself. Seeing that his future self's mistakes are his own, and how Hanzo had to live with his regret only to die at the hands of someone equally consumed by revenge, Scorpion decides his allegiance to the Netherrealm and Kronika can only bring him down an equally destructive path, and he needs to take this chance to switch sides while he still has things worth fighting for.
I just want to say that, while yes, the chapter system does limit the story potential a lot, it does not force the villains to be presented as weaker. NetherRealm COULD not only do what you said in this video, but they could also give the villains more chapters to make them actually win some fights, yet for some reason, NetherRealm only really lets that happen in the last two chapters of Aftermath and in the last chapter of Injustice 2 (and that one’s optional), so… yeah. They totally could lessen the problem of the villains never winning any fights, they just choose not to for whatever reason. I might be one of the people who actually enjoys NetherRealm’s stories, but even I can tell that they have problems that could be easily fixed…. Sorry for the tldr
This is an even smaller thing, but it’s the conversation the characters have in mirror matches. It’s all “I’m real” “nah, you fake” “I’ll kill you” type thing. Even the ones where they’re more jokin, they’re still like, “I’ll prove I’m the real deal” type thing. There’s some instances that’s not like it, but I find it boring when they all think to fight to find out who’s real mostly because it’s boring. Guilty Gear Strive, every character has different types of conversations. Some talk about their ideals, like Ky talks about if they can live up to their own expectations, while others are non-Chalont or question what the other has done. Sol says something about how they’re bounty hunters hunting each other. And Happy Chaos actually chooses who’s the protagonist and antagonist of the fight, since he likes things as a story. None of them are really overly aggressive, and feel like an universe interaction if they met themselves.

That unfortunately feels like Jade's fate in any timeline. I honestly don't know if she's ever had a significant win, which I feel like Mileena, Tanya, and maybe even Skarlet have had. Being Jade is suffering.

Edit: I mean I guess that'd be tricky, trying to stay within the confines of MK11's plot, wherein Raiden's chapter is at the very end of the game, somehow contriving a way to turn the two Thunder God's, who would presumably be on the same side up to now, against one another at the climax of the story. Yeah I can see why you'd leave that out, that would probably require a complete rewrite of the entire story mode... one it sorely needs, HEYOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Why do we need past raiden vs Dark raiden when we literally have fujin and can explore the path of morality and how it benefits/fucks over earthrealm. You wouldn’t even need to do time travel which basically eliminates the factor of convuluting the lore to retarded levels

I know they weren't present in the game, but I wish you talked about a potential Smoke and Stryker Mirror Match. Like for example what would a Revenant Stryker have negatively brought out of him? I'd assume it'd be the fact that despite doing his best for Earthrealm that he's been largely forgotten while for Smoke I'd have him retain his status as "Enenra" and trying to convince his Past Version to go into the same darkness that Noob Saibot embraced as a Revenant.
Off topic: you should definitely cover the wasted plotential of those CGI Resident Evil animated movies. Never have I ever read a script that is as bad as RE: Vendetta. I know that the series is viewed as a B movie creature-feature, but "Vendetta" is a crime. The same guy is writing for the next animated movie - Death Island, or how I call it "zm_mob".
Anything involving the bad guys winning won't happen so I know they're might be some fanboys that will say stop making these videos but I enjoy these videos no matter how fictional let's just pray that the villains get taken seriously as real threats

A shared chapter between someone who already has a fuckton of wins already and someone who doesn’t, along with the fact that we don’t have any other confirmation on who between the 2 characters you can choose from won against lao, geras, The cages (in which some options leading to exact same issue in base story of powerscaling - i.e. sindel vs Kung Lao when he literally bested DA, noob and the shokan champions and shao Kahn vs liu who won 3 times against already in mk history). Shao needed the wins the most as he has no good Win record at all in this timeline and aftermath does not confirm how many fights he acc won (apart from liu, despite it being a big w, causes massive powerscaling issues) Another is a villain chapter where the villain gets a massive buff in order to beat the heroes. Shang in base is terrible for winning and he only gets wins bcoz of the crown. Sindel is literally a massive plot convenience in which the entire aftermath story would have continued without her and has plot armor where she really would not be having at all (e.g. Lao who beat QC - who killled sindel and cetrion) and is literally a d’vorah clone. Good concept but terrible execution
I think I prefer Kotal dead, he just isn't interesting as a character especially since his introduction to the franchise. Supposed boss character, can't get a win and gets fooled by his own enforcer, I know the writers are who I should blame but this was the moment that made Kotal who he was and that's going to be hard to undo.
Yeah, Kotal is the worst and most poorly written of the major new characters whose very concept itself isn't the problem like with Kronika, Geras, or Kollector. Dude is the epitome of "such wasted potential".

@@nabilahmed579 Honestly, it's so hard to tell what characters NRS likes or dislikes beyond D'vorah clearly being at least one person's creator's pet and them hating most of the 3D era characters respectively. Pretty much *everyone* is written so incompetently that it seems impossible to tell, at least from the game alone. Either way, it *is* pretty funny that Kotal is supposed to be a "good guy" when he's basically written as a "bad guy" at pretty much all points. Does he ever even win any fights, even in the background, that aren't in his own chapter? Dude gets treated like an incompetent punching bag in so many other people's chapters in the story that I honestly don't think he does despite supposedly being at least Goro's equal and even supposedly Shao Khan's. Maybe he was suppoesed to be NRS Shao's equal in failure though; if so, then man does Kotal excel there.
I think another thing netherrealm could consider to improve the story is just because you won the fight doesn’t mean they actually have to take an L in the story all the time, like after you win they could transition into a cutscene where the characters are still trading blows or something similar, characters like kotal Kahn wouldn’t be so much of a meme if this was the case😭
That's exactly what happens with Shinnok in MKX and Cetrion in MK11. In both cases the cut-scene shows them stand right back up again, no worse for wear. Shinnok resumes a fighting stance (meaning he's perfectly capable of continuing and so hasn't taken an L), and Cetrion flat-out beats Jacqui by opening a chasm under her (meaning she was holding back throughout the match).

Really did not like how MK11 handled Hanzo, it's like they couldn't figure out what to do with him so they kill him off to make room for "The Scorpion you all know and love" like classic Scorpion is nice and all, but I was attached to Hanzo because of that growth and development they had (As well as the potential in there because let's be real what they had could have been handled better), and if they want Classic Scorpion to be as interesting then they would have to make them develop in a way different than Hanzo did, otherwise it's a re-tread and feels like the game is wasting my time.
If they had no idea what to do with Hanzo, he could have been killed by Noob, and then Kuai Liang decides that his brother is really beyond redemption and have a fight with him.
A future more corrupted Raiden meeting his past self could’ve been interesting but we can’t have that obviously. Probably would’ve resulted in one or both of them consulting with the Elder Gods anyway.
I feel like for Johnny, you should be able to play as past Johnny for half of it because he gets shot in the face and so, past Johnny goes on a murder spree because he did freak out when he got shot in the face and was firing his gun like a dude in call of duty with aimbot, fighting Erron Black midway through

I think that it would be better if they could expand on it together with the Great Spirit (as contrast of the two) Imagine if Revenant Nightwolf believes that his powers never came from the Great Spirit (but from himself) and that the GS limited his true potential (blocking his path way to Godhood) or that He stole them (or maybe he now serve a/the Great Spirit of The Netherrealm) Revenant could have their own Endings and Revenant Nightwolf could have an Ending where he becomes/replaces the (EarthRealm's/his Past) Great Spirit as an Evil Great Spirit
It was established in the game that if the past self is hurt the present self is also hurt. Of course the revenants lost they were fighting their past selves thus hurting themselves. I think only Johnny Cage and Scorpion beat their past selves showing how much the present ones have grown from their past.
And in tower mode and other casual matches the intro dialog is as if these past/future characters are just skins. I wouldnt even say they are seprate characters. Outside of the story mode, they are just skins, nothing else. Outside of the story mode Liu Kang and undead Liu Kang say the exact same stuff and act in the same way.

This is the same man who beat Liu kang, Kung lao, Kitana, and Twindel in the last game. Twindel murdered HALF THE CAST IN 22 SECONDS, Liu Kang is Liu Kang, and this version of Kung Lao won a 2v1 against Outworld's deadliest magic users and immediately after bodies funny big four arm tiger man who was supposed to be stronger than the funny big four arm dragon man who KILLED KUNG LAO'S MEGAGREAT GRANDFATHER. Someone please explain to me how a Jax who is basically still adjusting to his new arms and THAT much more inexperienced is suddenly beats the current one - UPGRADED by KRONIKA no less - and still theoretically has the energy to fight Cetrion, BBEG's crown be darned?
For the Scorpion vs scorpion fight i would say that the younger one has more motivation to fight compared to their older counter part but the older one has more skills acquired over time. I feel like that would give their fight some important both in and out of gameplay. (I'm not sure if it is ever stated why Scorpion workes for kronika but i would personally add the his motove is the revival of his lost Clan. As this is what the elder gods used to make him their champion and something that it took all of them to do which may not have even be fully possible kronika could do hinting at her power level plus the two Scorpio would have two apposing view point maybe that the past version sees the future version as a traitor that must by die)
How would you use the guest characters in the MK11 story mode? Here’s I would do it. Robocop and Rambo would join would join with the Special Forces while Spawn is split on who to help. Rain, Millena and Joker would join with Kronika but betrayed by Joker. The Terminator discovers the Cyber Lin Kuei factory, defeats Cyrax and Sector then reprograms them. It was always strange to me to see the revenants get dusted every single fight theyre ever in, like Revenant Liu Kang is Liu Kangs equal entirely, without holding back, he should be just as strong if not stronger than past Liu, yet he loses every fight he ever takes up, its weird to me
Past characters not fighting their Revenants sounds the biggest waste ever. Instead of Kollecter (who was so pointless) bring back Takeada and the Kombat Kids. Takeada revealing he's reached Master Rank in the Shirai Ryu (explaining why he wasn't there at first) The kids sees the Reveants and joins the past versions to fight against him. Imagine young!Scorpion seeing Takeada working with old!Scorpion? Old/young Scorpion and Takeada take down Dvorah as their big event. I would also keep Dark Raiden and have him fight past!Raiden. Getting rid of Dark Raiden was the worst idea of the game. Imagine past!Raiden seeing his future self become no different than Shao Kahn! Also, Kronika wouls abandon Cetrion, revealing she was the one who corruots Raiden and forces him to join her. Then Cetrion teams uo with past!Raiden for their showdown. Everything was a mess
Wow, this *almost* made the Kotal/Jade relationship palatable to me despite Kotal being such a cowardly, genocidal scumbag. Truly you are a miracle worker. Also it's hilarious how Kollector getting cut from the story is always an improvement. (By the Elder) Gods _MK11_ dropped the ball on all of its new characters so hard outside of Cetrion, whom they still failed. "Such wasted potential" indeed.
You really made me realise how useless kollector is in terms of plot. He does nothing in the story. He doesn't have a rivalry or story with a character. And his personality is bland and uninteresting. Mk making new characters is exciting and I was excited when I saw cetrion and gearas, but kollector Is just dull.

I always find it weird that Raiden supposedly beats Liu Kang in every timeline despite the Midway era and even MK9 itself implying Liu is the stronger of the two.
@RooByrne MK1: Raiden straight-up has to lose to Liu Kang as both were competitors in the tournament. Of course, later retcons made Raiden exempt, but in the original story Liu Kang won that fight.
MK2-DA: Liu Kang was the one who defeated Shao Kah twice and even Shinnok, something Raiden fails to do, and he was powerful enough that the Deadly Alliance had to pull a sneak attack to kill him while they beat Raiden in a straight fight.
Deception/Armageddon: Liu Kang loses to Raiden here, but it's important to remember he was a mindless Zombie at the time.
MK9: Raiden gets bitchslapped by Shao Kahn and even with the Elder God amp initially failed to damage him. Meanwhile Liu Kang kicked his ass and fisted him through the chest.

Raiden survived longer than Liu Kang did against the Dealy Alliance. But when he did lose he came back, since he's an immortal God, and blew them both up, along with the army they had just finished ressurecting. The only reason Onaga survived was because of the Kamidogu. Everything else in the area got obliterated.
Raiden was the one leading the defense against Shinnok's assault on the Heavens in MK4. Liu Kang may have been the one to finish Shinnok, but Raiden and even Fujin were there helping.
Zombie Liu Kang is said to retain his knowledge of martial arts, being on par with his soul as the two clashed perfectly equal in Kang's Deception ending. Neither able to get the upper hand.

1: That was in the past. Both MK4 and MKX actually show Shinnok rendering Raiden powerless.
2: Raiden lasted longer but again, Liu Kang had to be surprise attacked by Quan Chi while Shang Tsung acted as a distraction/punching bag. If not for that the fight would've been much longer. Shao Kahn was also someone the sorcerers had to take by surprise.
3: Onaga didn't even need the Kamidogu as they weren't on his person in the intro. Raiden also isn't immortal and failed to take the sorcerers at the same time.
4: This would point to Zombie Liu Kang being half as strong as MK1-DA LK _at best._
5: I even forgot to mention that Armageddon and MK9 both have Liu Kang's ending be about him kicking Raiden's ass and becoming the new god of EarthRealm.

@@jamainegardner4193 Raiden isn't powerless in MK4. Maybe you're thinking of MK3 where Raiden is yeeted into the void since the Outworld Gods had taken over Earthrealm due to the merger. In MK4 Raiden leads the charge against Shinnok and saves the Elder Gods from him.
Doesn't mean the DA couldn't have overpowered Kang eventually. And Raiden had defeated Shang Tsung if I remember correctly, and Tsung had to absorb souls from the soulnado to recharge in order to get back up and fight Raiden. Raiden still went toe -to-toe with the DA and killed them in the end. Raiden is immortal. He's a God. Gods in MK are immortal. What are you even talking about?
The only way Onaga was able to be defeated was to destroy the kamidogu first. Shujinko had collected all of them for him, right before Onaga revealed himself and then went of to meet Raiden and the DA. The end of the Konquest mode leads straight into the intro cinematic.
Both of those Kang endings are non-canon. Same with all the other people who supposedly killed bosses in MK games, who lore-wise would actually have zero chance of doing so.
Liu Kang is a powerful and great warrior and had some amazing wins. But don't dismiss Raiden, especially not original timeline Raiden. He had as many great feats and wins and had successfully defended Earthrealm for millions of years. Sure, it might've come close sometime, but Earthrealm was always saved.
I know he's largely irrelevant to the plot and doing this would probably be a waste of time, but seeing a fight between older present Erron and young past Erron could have been neat and the dynamic of the past damage transferring to present Erron would have made things more interesting. Also you can do the cowboy quickdraw duel trope.
They've could have added that if Erron had a chapter in MK11
It could have been fun to have the cowboy duel as a QTE if MK11 had some. Hell, maybe that's how the fight ends and if you fail, the Erron you're playing dies.

Then, let's just change it a bit: if you're playing as Past Erron, winning the QTE will kill Present Erron but losing will make Present Erron disarm Past Erron and capture him.
If you're playing Present Erron, then winning means he successfully disarms his Past-self while losing means that Past Erron kills Present Erron.

Jade blames her death on being friends with Kitana… but still fights on the same side as her…. Clearly her point of view is warped by magic but even so, what?
It's like how R.Sindel is pissed at past Nightwolf while the R.Nightwolf is standing right next to her or how R.Kitana is fighting alongside Shao Khan, they really didn't put a lot of thought or logic in anything.

I guess I'll throw my hat into this and make this suggestion for the Jax section: Jax and his daughter prepare to leave after getting the crown but Jax pauses and tells her to go ahead where the older Jax steps out, not wanting Jacqui to see him like this. The younger understands and fights revealing that the upgrades basically make Jax even in terms of power, the fight ending with Older Jax being unable to keep up due to staminia and younger Jax losing one of his cyber arms but manages to get away. (Likely from both men punching the other).
Meanwhile Jacqui fights the avatar using the crown. Jax arrives and accidentally distracts her with his battle damage and she is caught in a hole. Older Jax arrives and convinces the younger one to give the crown to save his daughter though his daughter now hates him.
Story continues as usual but now young Jax out for the story due to his busted arm though Kronica does de-age current Jax to his prime so you now have a new skin for him. He fights Raiden as usual and realizes his mistake and switches sides once more, though Geras arrives and steals his youth as punishment so he is back to his current age. If you want to go a step further you can even have Jax sacrifice himself to tackle Geras off the boat into the sea of blood.

Looking back at the Chapters system , it was limited and didn’t explore more characters & character moments and only allowed select people to progress the story. And those people being the good guys & not the villains to get some wins.
It literally makes the revenants look pointless when they just get bodied for the sake of the good guys winning. I loved your ideas of how more dynamic character relationship could have been, like for example if Noob Saibot and Frost battle for the sake of getting to potentially killing Sub-Zero in order to take over the Lin Kuei with Scorpion intervening. Hopefully MK1 does something right with another reboot after MK11 just being written into a corner.
I recommend people to read Snake's Khronicles. It's been very cathartic lately
I wish we could have played as Baraka in story mode especially since he and kitana had a truce. Sure it would have slowed the narrative pace but christ let the bad guys be playable!!!
Same for Erron since his present version is completely absent outside of a cutscene. Even Scarlet disappears from the story from what I remember.
Just a few criticisms:
1: It makes sense that Raiden defeats Liu Kang every single time because he's a God with literally billions of years of training and experience over Liu Kang. This is one of the few retcons that I actually support and it makes sense that full gods aren't allowed to participate in the Mortal Kombat tournament. The only exception being MK3 because in Trilogy Raiden was forced to relinquish his Godhood temporarily. While it would weaken his powers it wouldn't rob him of them completely. Shao Kahn is another exception because it's never stated if he was ever a full God or not. But even as a demigod he's been absorbing souls for eons. A better explanation would be that he underestimated Liu Kang in MK2 leading to his defeat. So in MK3 Raiden trains Liu Kang and the others harder so now he can defeat Shao Kahn who's now expecting him to be strong enough for a serious fight while also helping Raiden make himself stronger in case Liu Kang can't defeat Shao Kahn.
Although arguably Revenant Liu Kang should have defeated Raiden because his powers are weaker in the netherrealm and Revenant Liu got an Amp from absorbing the soul of his past self. Although it could also be argued that him absorbing the soul of his past self reawakened the real Liu Kang inside the Revenant, making him subconsciously hold back because his true self knows that Kronika is evil and is the one truly responsible for setting him and Raiden against each other. However this new timeline with Fire God Liu Kang can shake that up as Raiden is mortal and Liu Kang is the literal Elder/Titan God of fire, lightning and time. Like he's the fusion of Talos and Akatosh from the Elder Scrolls games.
2: By your logic Kung Lao is stronger than both Raiden and Liu Kang because in MK9 he defeated Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, something neither Raiden or Liu Kang could do. Then again powerscaling is off because Kung Lao who was older and more experienced in Deadly Alliance lost to these same two sorcerers unless you want to argue that they had him fight Onaga's army. And Raiden damn well nearly defeated the Deadly Alliance even though his powers are weaker in Outworld. Something stated multiple times. Also Onaga was only stronger than everyone because he had the Kamidogu. He needed multiple literal maguffins to be strong enough to tank Raiden's self destruct move.
3: D'vorah is a villain sue who needs to die in a fire. In spite of her losses she's a karma hodini who never suffers for her actions. If anyone should have been killed in Aftermath it should have been her by Shao Kahn's hands because he was pissed over Mileena.
4: Hanzo doesn't need to lose his powers to lose to his past self. He could simply just hold back prompting Scorpion to ask why he's holding back, showing how wise Hanzo has become. This is yet another instance where D'vorah should have died after she kills Hanzo.
5: Sindel is a can of worms that's been dissected to death and even you have given a better reason for her to side with Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn. If she had been faking a heel turn to kill Shao Kahn and revealed that she was secretly good the whole time would give her a better story than her always being evil and blindly trusting Shang Tsung who's been known to be one of if not the biggest backstabber in the entire MK universe. It also gives us an excuse to bring in a second Revenant Sindel from the past to stop her resurrected self, flipping the script where the Revenant can kill the living version but not the other way around. While she came out later it would have been interesting to see a Revenant Mileena who's bonded with the Revenants of Kitana and Sindel while still being angry about her death and Tanya's. This could lead to present Sindel trying to reach out to past Mileena who ultimately saves her from her Revenant self since if she kills the Revenant she'll cease to exist.
6: Speaking of mirror matches, where's one for Bi-Han? If we’re bringing in characters from the past why not bring in MK1 Sub-zero and have him confront his wraith self. Noob Saibot thinks it's Quai Lang at first before he hears his own human voice. Human Bi-Han then unmasks revealing that he's learned about his future from Raiden and seaks to prevent it. Depending on player choice Sub-zero can defeat Bi-Han or Noob Saibot can defeat him but not kill him because Quan Chi for some reason isn't around which is also why the Revenants can't kill their living selves. Either way Hanzo and Quai Lang interfere, and are shocked that human Bi-Han is there. This also gives him needed screen time with his brother and Hanzo. Leading to him needing to earn their trust as he tries to becoming a slave to Shinnok. He'd also try to mend his relationship with his brother as well as earn Hanzo's forgiveness, showing that after seeing he truly is trying to change.
Side note: Also, why can't Noob Saibot ever win a fight?! For the love of the Elder Gods he was able to somehow defeat 4 literal gods as Sub-zero yet he loses to freaking Scorpion whom he's defeated not only as a specter but in Hell once before, then ends up jobbing to everyone including Stryker, his younger brother and even Jaquie! "Quan Chi used the best parts of me." my ass! With the final insult being that Fujin defeats him in Aftermath and then rubs salt in the wound by stripping him of all credibility.
Overall:
Not a bad video but there are many points I disagree with. Then again MK11 is the definition of wasted potential.

Liu Kang has beaten an *Elder God* in MK4, which I'm pretty sure means he's not entirely incapable of putting up a good fight against Raiden.

I think Kabal is one of the most wasted revenants. It would have been cool for a Revenant to actually defect to the good guys side playing on the good nature that exists in side of him winning out like it did before. If scorpion can change his path I don’t see why the Revenants couldn’t either especially since Quran Chi is dead
@RooByrne yeah that’s how they became human again what I’m mostly focusing on is noob saibot and scorpion were both created by Quan Chi but both characters have shown desires outside of their “master” I wanted some of that for at least 1 of the Revenants. They are all always super bad and super tied to the hip of insert current big bad. None of them seem to have wants outside of serving which is weird since their masters are both dead
For the Scorpion/Hanzo fight, I would have thought it better if D'vorah had been replaced with Noob Saibot, to have Hanzo confront his past mistake. Noob chastises Hanzo for only being regretful he lost his chance to regain his clan, only to be angrily rebuked by Hanzo, who defeats him, but is soon after ambushed by Scorpion. After winning, Hanzo refuses to kill his past self, but in doing so leaves himself open to Noob, who gets the drop on Hanzo, and kills him. Scorpion, seeing his future self killed by Noob Saibot, is disturbed, and decides to listen to Hanzo, who goes into further detail about his regrets for killing Bi Han. How it was a short sighted move that may have satisfied his clan honour, but at the cost of ever seeing the ones he loved so much. And how this painful experience, and rash actions against Quan Chi, have taught him to think twice before ever taking another life. Because the consequences of thoughtless action remain for far longer than the deed itself. Seeing that his future self's mistakes are his own, and how Hanzo had to live with his regret only to die at the hands of someone equally consumed by revenge, Scorpion decides his allegiance to the Netherrealm and Kronika can only bring him down an equally destructive path, and he needs to take this chance to switch sides while he still has things worth fighting for.

I just want to say that, while yes, the chapter system does limit the story potential a lot, it does not force the villains to be presented as weaker. NetherRealm COULD not only do what you said in this video, but they could also give the villains more chapters to make them actually win some fights, yet for some reason, NetherRealm only really lets that happen in the last two chapters of Aftermath and in the last chapter of Injustice 2 (and that one’s optional), so… yeah. They totally could lessen the problem of the villains never winning any fights, they just choose not to for whatever reason. I might be one of the people who actually enjoys NetherRealm’s stories, but even I can tell that they have problems that could be easily fixed….

It’s all “I’m real” “nah, you fake” “I’ll kill you” type thing. Even the ones where they’re more jokin, they’re still like, “I’ll prove I’m the real deal” type thing.
There’s some instances that’s not like it, but I find it boring when they all think to fight to find out who’s real mostly because it’s boring.
Guilty Gear Strive, every character has different types of conversations.
Some talk about their ideals, like Ky talks about if they can live up to their own expectations, while others are non-Chalont or question what the other has done.
Sol says something about how they’re bounty hunters hunting each other.
And Happy Chaos actually chooses who’s the protagonist and antagonist of the fight, since he likes things as a story.
None of them are really overly aggressive, and feel like an universe interaction if they met themselves.

I know they weren't present in the game, but I wish you talked about a potential Smoke and Stryker Mirror Match. Like for example what would a Revenant Stryker have negatively brought out of him? I'd assume it'd be the fact that despite doing his best for Earthrealm that he's been largely forgotten while for Smoke I'd have him retain his status as "Enenra" and trying to convince his Past Version to go into the same darkness that Noob Saibot embraced as a Revenant.
Off topic: you should definitely cover the wasted plotential of those CGI Resident Evil animated movies. Never have I ever read a script that is as bad as RE: Vendetta. I know that the series is viewed as a B movie creature-feature, but "Vendetta" is a crime. The same guy is writing for the next animated movie - Death Island, or how I call it "zm_mob".

A shared chapter between someone who already has a fuckton of wins already and someone who doesn’t, along with the fact that we don’t have any other confirmation on who between the 2 characters you can choose from won against lao, geras, The cages (in which some options leading to exact same issue in base story of powerscaling - i.e. sindel vs Kung Lao when he literally bested DA, noob and the shokan champions and shao Kahn vs liu who won 3 times against already in mk history). Shao needed the wins the most as he has no good Win record at all in this timeline and aftermath does not confirm how many fights he acc won (apart from liu, despite it being a big w, causes massive powerscaling issues)
Another is a villain chapter where the villain gets a massive buff in order to beat the heroes.
Shang in base is terrible for winning and he only gets wins bcoz of the crown.
Sindel is literally a massive plot convenience in which the entire aftermath story would have continued without her and has plot armor where she really would not be having at all (e.g. Lao who beat QC - who killled sindel and cetrion) and is literally a d’vorah clone.

I think I prefer Kotal dead, he just isn't interesting as a character especially since his introduction to the franchise.
Supposed boss character, can't get a win and gets fooled by his own enforcer, I know the writers are who I should blame but this was the moment that made Kotal who he was and that's going to be hard to undo.
Especially as his chapters on MKX and mk11 were both filler. Yet we're supposed to believe that Kotal was next in line
Yeah, Kotal is the worst and most poorly written of the major new characters whose very concept itself isn't the problem like with Kronika, Geras, or Kollector. Dude is the epitome of "such wasted potential".
I kinda look forward to seeing what mortal Kombat 1 does with Kotal now that characters back stories are changing

@@nabilahmed579 Honestly, it's so hard to tell what characters NRS likes or dislikes beyond D'vorah clearly being at least one person's creator's pet and them hating most of the 3D era characters respectively. Pretty much *everyone* is written so incompetently that it seems impossible to tell, at least from the game alone.
Either way, it *is* pretty funny that Kotal is supposed to be a "good guy" when he's basically written as a "bad guy" at pretty much all points. Does he ever even win any fights, even in the background, that aren't in his own chapter? Dude gets treated like an incompetent punching bag in so many other people's chapters in the story that I honestly don't think he does despite supposedly being at least Goro's equal and even supposedly Shao Khan's. Maybe he was suppoesed to be NRS Shao's equal in failure though; if so, then man does Kotal excel there.
I will chug up all the reserves of copium to hope that mk12 makes for a Good story at the very least

I think another thing netherrealm could consider to improve the story is just because you won the fight doesn’t mean they actually have to take an L in the story all the time, like after you win they could transition into a cutscene where the characters are still trading blows or something similar, characters like kotal Kahn wouldn’t be so much of a meme if this was the case😭
That's exactly what happens with Shinnok in MKX and Cetrion in MK11.
In both cases the cut-scene shows them stand right back up again, no worse for wear. Shinnok resumes a fighting stance (meaning he's perfectly capable of continuing and so hasn't taken an L), and Cetrion flat-out beats Jacqui by opening a chasm under her (meaning she was holding back throughout the match).

Really did not like how MK11 handled Hanzo, it's like they couldn't figure out what to do with him so they kill him off to make room for "The Scorpion you all know and love" like classic Scorpion is nice and all, but I was attached to Hanzo because of that growth and development they had (As well as the potential in there because let's be real what they had could have been handled better), and if they want Classic Scorpion to be as interesting then they would have to make them develop in a way different than Hanzo did, otherwise it's a re-tread and feels like the game is wasting my time.
If they had no idea what to do with Hanzo, he could have been killed by Noob, and then Kuai Liang decides that his brother is really beyond redemption and have a fight with him.

A future more corrupted Raiden meeting his past self could’ve been interesting but we can’t have that obviously. Probably would’ve resulted in one or both of them consulting with the Elder Gods anyway.
I feel like for Johnny, you should be able to play as past Johnny for half of it because he gets shot in the face and so, past Johnny goes on a murder spree because he did freak out when he got shot in the face and was firing his gun like a dude in call of duty with aimbot, fighting Erron Black midway through

I think that it would be better if they could expand on it together with the Great Spirit (as contrast of the two)
Imagine if Revenant Nightwolf believes that his powers never came from the Great Spirit (but from himself) and that the GS limited his true potential (blocking his path way to Godhood) or that He stole them (or maybe he now serve a/the Great Spirit of The Netherrealm)
Revenant could have their own Endings and Revenant Nightwolf could have an Ending where he becomes/replaces the (EarthRealm's/his Past) Great Spirit as an Evil Great Spirit
It was established in the game that if the past self is hurt the present self is also hurt. Of course the revenants lost they were fighting their past selves thus hurting themselves. I think only Johnny Cage and Scorpion beat their past selves showing how much the present ones have grown from their past.

And in tower mode and other casual matches the intro dialog is as if these past/future characters are just skins. I wouldnt even say they are seprate characters. Outside of the story mode, they are just skins, nothing else. Outside of the story mode Liu Kang and undead Liu Kang say the exact same stuff and act in the same way.

Also revenants can only go against their past self not their friends’ past self that would be interesting (unless you’re Jade and job to everyone)
For the Scorpion vs scorpion fight i would say that the younger one has more motivation to fight compared to their older counter part but the older one has more skills acquired over time. I feel like that would give their fight some important both in and out of gameplay. (I'm not sure if it is ever stated why Scorpion workes for kronika but i would personally add the his motove is the revival of his lost Clan. As this is what the elder gods used to make him their champion and something that it took all of them to do which may not have even be fully possible kronika could do hinting at her power level plus the two Scorpio would have two apposing view point maybe that the past version sees the future version as a traitor that must by die)
How would you use the guest characters in the MK11 story mode? Here’s I would do it. Robocop and Rambo would join would join with the Special Forces while Spawn is split on who to help. Rain, Millena and Joker would join with Kronika but betrayed by Joker. The Terminator discovers the Cyber Lin Kuei factory, defeats Cyrax and Sector then reprograms them. Later reprograms the factory with Skynets, creating Cyber Lin Kuei/Terminator hybrids. Instead of eliminating all life, he sees the benefit of human brains in terminator bodies.
That’s all I got, can you come up with a better story?
Mk11 is certainly lazy af, one thing they could’ve done is make the revenant costumes have their own unique dialogue from the past ones, instead what we got is random past character dialogues while wearing the revenant costume and revenant dialogue as a past version, like why

If not for Cutscene Power to the Max, the bad guys in Netherrealm Mortal Kombat games would never be a threat, since they lose whenever you fight them. Especially the Revenants. How are they supposed to be a threat when they lose every fight they ever get in?

It was always strange to me to see the revenants get dusted every single fight theyre ever in, like Revenant Liu Kang is Liu Kangs equal entirely, without holding back, he should be just as strong if not stronger than past Liu, yet he loses every fight he ever takes up, its weird to me
Past characters not fighting their Revenants sounds the biggest waste ever.
Instead of Kollecter (who was so pointless) bring back Takeada and the Kombat Kids. Takeada revealing he's reached Master Rank in the Shirai Ryu (explaining why he wasn't there at first)
The kids sees the Reveants and joins the past versions to fight against him. Imagine young!Scorpion seeing Takeada working with old!Scorpion? Old/young Scorpion and Takeada take down Dvorah as their big event.
I would also keep Dark Raiden and have him fight past!Raiden. Getting rid of Dark Raiden was the worst idea of the game. Imagine past!Raiden seeing his future self become no different than Shao Kahn!
Also, Kronika wouls abandon Cetrion, revealing she was the one who corruots Raiden and forces him to join her. Then Cetrion teams uo with past!Raiden for their showdown.

Also it's hilarious how Kollector getting cut from the story is always an improvement. (By the Elder) Gods _MK11_ dropped the ball on all of its new characters so hard outside of Cetrion, whom they still failed. "Such wasted potential" indeed.
