Over the years I've been privileged to own some classic cars. A '67 VE Valiant with VIP interior and discs, a VG sedan, a CM sedan, a 70s Chrysler by Chrysler with a worked 360 and performance running gear, a 64 Bluebird sport, a 1971 fully-imported Kombi Kamper, a 1200 Datsun, and a 60 series landcruiser wagon, to name some. The one thing I've learned is that about 12 months after I sold or got rid of these vehicles, their value started to climb. So, I now have an '05 V6 auto Ford Courier 'hilift' 2WD, and I'm going to keep it and pass it on to my granddaughter. It'll be worth a dollar or two one day.
Hey thats my ute with bike in the back, sorry again about having the last sausage roll at All Chrysler day. My Drifter ute is also for sale, you should by it.
The Viper SRT-10 was not officially sold in Australia, but was grey-imported and converted to right-hand drive. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk was officially sold in Australia. The only Hellcat-engined vehicle that was officially sold in Australia.
A Melbourne Age article of October 17, 2002 says DaimlerChrysler was well advanced on selling 25 Vipers per year through five Chrysler capital city dealers with locally approved conversion shop doing the RHD conversion. Big price quoted and full warranty.
Wow Wastie, thank you so much for this video, absolutely love it, and your enthusiasm. Loved seeing the '73 Rambler Matador - I had one the same (except in Dark Blue with white leather interior and the 360ci V8, bought from my grandfather) from '87 until '99, and sold it to member of the Rambler Car Club, whom unfortunately passed a couple of years ago now, and I have no idea what happened to the car. Hope it's still out there being taken care of, and would love the opportunity to reacquire it at some stage (should never have sold it, but circumstances conspired at the time). Love me some old Chryslers/Valiants too, but I currently am residing on "the dark side", with my current classic being a Ford Fairlane. I really have to get to this show myself next year. Thanks again. Cheers!
13:53 Wow, I love your profound questions! I recently jsut went to an even to hear Eckart Tolle speak and he says our primary reason is to find inner peace, which sort of contradicts what Fletch said, but one has to follow their inner passions and that's what Fletch did... However we have to have a balance between persuing one's dream and not running oneself "to the ground" earlier than we might be destined to... This needs separate forum lol
Was looking for another video at JDM where you talk about the "seen and unseen" saying but here I am... That panel van at 3:36 is awesome! As well as the next car you film as different kind of "wonderful"
From the comment at 27:48. There were some more US muscle cars previously assembled here before the Javelin and AMX mentioned as being the only ones at 27:48. Around 65 to 67 Ford Australia assembled a few hundred Mustangs, The aim was to have one in each Ford dealer to get customers used to and admiring the upcoming XR "Mustang Bred" Falcon look. Shannons Club TV provide an episode on this nearly forgotten limited production : ua-cam.com/video/svo0flmsgaw/v-deo.html A little bit like Chryslers later Viper plan of limited umbers of converted Vipers.
If I remember correctly the Chrysler Centura was based on a Simca which was a Chrysler owned French manufacturer. And AMI, which manufactured those Ramblers and then Toyotas, was taken over by Toyota.
It's a pity Chrysler didn't have the foresight to allow it to flourish, evolve and find it's way on the market. Ford did a similar thing with the Cortina, and got twenty years out of the concept. Nothing is worse than giving up on something so readily. And Holden had the Torana, which requires no introduction......
I worked for a time at AMI or Australian Motor Industries in Port Melbourne and in those days we assembled Rambler cars which were quite a respected brand in the day, ambassadors, Rambler Americans, Javelins, and the compact Rambler Hornets were quite popular too, these Hornets were only available with six cylinder engines in Australia Apart from one! My Brother in law owned the only Australian delivered V8 engined Hornet that was driven by an AMI executive, it had the Rambler 304 ci V8 and I drove thousands of miles in that car until it was sold back in the mid 1970’s, AMI also manufactured from CKD Triumph and Toyota cars
AMI also assembled Standard Vanguard cars but their biggest achievement was assembling from 1959 to 1964 the Mercedes Benz 220S and 220SE models : ua-cam.com/video/tyfMjSKjHtQ/v-deo.html My understanding was that Toyota were very impressed with AMI being able to do that and learnt from this car also.
The heat/humidity doesn't bother everyone, I lived for years in Singapore and used to turn the AC off in my work van so I could have a break from air conditioning. I now live in Brisbane and wouldn't be able to cope in winter without a heater in the car, each to their own.
Grew up without A/C, and when it was new used to find it just made the heat hit harder when you got out of the car. And vinyl seats, that's why you would carry a towel. When I had a '71 Statesman I took the A/C out, didn't work well, was not factory and got in the way of my leg.
Those 1971 Plymouth Roadrunners are my favourite Mopars. There's only a few in Australia. Chargers, Barracudas, Challengers are plentiful but not 71 rrunners.
Seems a good car show, I have seen a couple of Fletch videos at the show over the years. I used to see a few Ramblers around back when they were new, mainly Hornets and Matadors. I’m sure a funeral director near my area at the time had a couple of Matador sedans (Holden brought in a batch of Chevy Caprices around 75/76, another funeral director used a couple of those for a many years). With the local AMX you’ll notice that the AMX disc on the rear three quarter pillar is dark (black?) but body colour on all of the US AMXs. I have also seen a Rambler MatadorX coupe. I thought it odd looking when it was new, now I like it and would love to see another.
Back in the day when the Sydney show was set up at a venue which I think was called Fairfield race course, I noticed that on the way in, you saw all these Chryslers in the parking lot that should have been inside on display. So rather than head straight in, I'd spend half an hour outside photographing those cars before capturing the ones inside as well. I have a whole photo album of classic Chrysler's that I've snapped dating back to about 2001.
CM late 1978 -mid 81. A funny thing I noticed. After Chrysler started using C for Chrysler for their model designation after using V for Valiant, Holden adopted V for their Commodore model designations after C was taken by Chrysler!!
Hey mate it’s john lodge with the 3 drifters sorry I wasn’t there at Chrysler on the Murray 😢 I would love to show u my 3 cars one day anyway have a good one 👍
6:25 I do love a Vynal top, particularly on a a car like A Dodge Dart/Valiant Coupe, but I can see it after 10 years, unless garaged and treated regularly it looking horrible...
I grew up in the bush. Once the ZJ Fairlane was released, every farmer in my area with VF to VK Valiants traded them on the new Fairlanes....... probably the 351's. That district had about 30 ZJ Fairlanes around that time. These days, they're likely all running Hilux's or LandCruisers.
7:19 I agree, and that reminds how every country has got a different electric plug and we have to buy converters!! Why!? I guess most countries in Europe have got same three spoke vertically but makes travelling and especially today if one wants to recharge things! End of rant lol
Have you got use to drive in different sides of the road. For me when I drove in the USA it was ok except when I was alone and no other car did i drive on the wrong side. Also got caught in Chicago traffic and spent two hours in traffic jam yet finlly got to the end and there was nothing there to say why it happened.
For me round abouts are weird when in Europe as I have to give to the left instead... And yes for a while I open the wrong door to get in lol, It is concerning as you say if you don't see where cars are going one can easily go on wrong side of road!
More on the Dodge Viper at 8:00. There was a plan, in 2002, to sell Vipers through five chosen Chrysler dealers in five of the major capital cities. The plan was to sell 25 per year. All with standard Chrysler 3 year 100,000 km warranty. Converted to right hand drive at the Bayswater Victoria company known as Viperformance. With the pilot models approved for quality by DaimlerChrysler US representatives. Not sure how many actually got converted and sold, but around that time I saw my first Viper on the Eastern Freeway in Melbourne. This example seems to be claimed by the owner to be a one of one factory official car : ua-cam.com/video/zzoCdwzCsk4/v-deo.html I recall another UA-cam vid where limited numbers were talked about, maybe in the comments, through five capital city dealers. I seem to recall at least one for each major state. I think Vic, NSW, Qld, SA and WA. I will paste a follow up link to a Melbourne Age article of the time with more details of what the plan was.
Looks like the link get surpressed by UA-cam but a summary follows : A Melbourne Age article of October 17, 2002 says DaimlerChrysler was well advanced on selling 25 Vipers per year through five Chrysler capital city dealers with locally approved conversion shop doing the RHD conversion. In the 70's Chryslers had so much more power than the Holden & Fords it wasn't funny. However the Chryslers were let down by poor brakes. The muscle cars were killed off by the petrol price shock in the mid 70's but man I'd love a genuine Chrysler panel van.
20:27, Probably repeating myself here, but Chrysler did a deal with Mitsubishy, but also owned part of the Roots group in UK so that's why the Centura is essntially UK car... Anyhow the deal with Mistubishy seemed to go well where they produced the Sigma under Chrysler badge for a time and then Chrysler pulled out and sold the factory to Mistubishy where they produced Magna till about mid 2000's... I will put this link of Fletch Chrysler with Mistubishy factory tag on it! Oh I've also NEVER seen a "Chrysler Lancer", but also know the Roots group in UK (Hillman and others) had a "Lancer" too... ua-cam.com/video/aIP-sroP8vc/v-deo.html
Wasteland firebirds: There is nothing remarkable about the Chrysler LX platforms being right hand drive,as its origins are the Chinese long-wheelbase version on the Mercedes W201 and W124 dating to the early 1980s. If you did not know, with no money to update the tooling, Peugeot is ending production of the LX platform; the 300, Charger, and Challenger will be history as the EU Mandate for all electric in 2030 is drawing near.
