Hey, this will probably get buried in the comment section, but this means so much to me. i had a great friend, named declan, we knew eachother for many years, we spent our summers in mykonos drinking ales and talking about poetry. he died this year, and this was his favorite song. i miss you declan.

Since I first heard this band in 2008, their music has deeply moved me. The songs become associated with the times and places in which I hear them. Blue Ridge Mountains and Ragged Wood will forever represent my trip to Yellowstone with my father during a cold fall. The entirety of Helplessness Blues is a hot summer for me. I can't wait to discover what this new music will become.

That's so true, their music more than any other, are associated with specific times that being me back, which gives me mixed feelings tbh

I grew up listening to Yes, Simon and Garfunkel, Mamas and the Papas, Peter, Paul and Mary on vinyl.... this takes me back to those days, and makes me think of my dad who introduced me to those bands. It's nostalgic and brand new all at the same time, and is ineffably magical!

True! I've listened to 1960s/70s Folk Rock, Neil Young, experimental stuff etc. & gotta admit as ever, that FF hit that special key of true warmth & "magic". It's music from a brillant, funny & humble man with much heart. FF's music is the result.

I love that this feels both familiar and brand new at the same time. I love how with each album, they develop and progress but never lose that special 'fleet foxes' sound that makes them so unique. They don't feel the need to abandon their style or distance themselves from what they've done in the past like some other bands do.

    Robin Pecknold:
My friend and bandmate Skyler Skjelset’s birthday is May 3, and our album Helplessness Blues was released on May 3, 2011. The song “Third of May / Ōdaigahara” is about my relationship with Skye. It addresses our distance in the years after touring that album, the feeling of having an unresolved, unrequited relationship that is lingering psychologically. Even if some time apart was necessary and progressive for both of us as individuals, I missed our connection, especially the one we had when we were teenagers, and the lyrics for the song grew out of that feeling."
"It felt like a funny coincidence to see a Goya painting called Third of May. The compounded coincidences, and how the whole experience of playing music with him itself felt like a series of lucky breaks and coincidences, left me feeling like it was a good phrase to use for the title of a song."

Halfway through the song and already falling in love with it. I will admit that leading up to the release of your new album, I was worried that your core style and the aspects of your band that make it so great would change. But as I'm writing this comment and the song is continuing to play, I'm feeling more and more relief. It has the wonderful, unique sound of the Fleet Foxes that I know, but with some amazing little changes that come with the natural evolution of artists and groups of artists. This is the first taste I've had of your new music, and so far I'm more than satisfied. Thank you for making such genuine artwork!!

This song always gets me. On my travels in mission work in Mexico, working in the high beautifully rolled hills where patches of sunlight would hit parts, and where the breeze would hit my face peacefully as I shoveled, i would always listen to this song on repeat, not knowing the emotional impact it would give me moreso here at home now. after my friend commited suicide, actually 2 days right after that trip to Mexico, this song is a very solemn serious and holy listen. I thank Fleet Foxes for giving me all the memories of Mexico and my friend in one song.

    This song is deep.
It feels like a song about returning to your old self/life, knowing that nobody understands you.
That's what I got out of it.

On our last day of camping this song came out. Couldn't have been a better time, seems like a sign from God! Can't wait to see them in Detroit!!!!

I say this with love, but it is remarkable to compare the recored version to a video on UA-cam of him playing it live earlier in 2016. While the bones ares there, the song clearly went through many changes. This arrangement is incredible. It went from an okay folk-rock song, to a near-perfect record that lasts 9 mins long. I can't think of any other record of late as well-crafted as this. Special shout-out to the drummer and Robin I believe who played bass on this track. There is a power in the rhythm section that really lifts the emotion of the song throughout.

This album is so FUCKING GENIUS. And i love all of them. Truly i do. But there is something just so incredibly special about this album. It has has damn near 4 years to soak in already. Hard to believe that much time has passed so fast. So much in my life has happened in this time. Ill never forget getting to see them the 1 and only time ive gotten to . On this tour. In Pittsburgh. My home. And this was the best performance ive seen in the setting it was performed. By far. Just literally jaw dropping. And the entire crowd was just silent. Like totally mesmerized. It was absolute magic.

Josh Tillman (Father John Misty) toured and recorded with Fleet Foxes as a drummer and back-up singer from 2008 to 2012, when he quit the band to pursue his solo project, Father John Misty. Robin Pecknold is the main singer/lyricist for Fleet Foxes. He sings all the songs, including this one. Fleet Foxes has had multiple drummers fill in for Tillman since he left the band, but it's unclear whether or not they've found a permanent replacement drummer for him yet.
