It is worth noting that the 370hp rating is under rated. This was done to deal with a Pontiac Directive that no car exceeds one HP per 10lbs. of car weight. The reasoning behind this restriction was that insurance companies were dramatically raising the rates on "high powered cars". This under rating was acheived by "pegging" the rpm at which the HP rating was listed. They used the estimated RPM at 70mph, approximately 3900 RPM with 4.33:1 ratio rear end. At 5600 RPM the Ram Air IV actually produced 420hp and 445 lbf⋅ft of torque. My 69 GTO has the base model 400, which is accurately rated at 350HP and 360 lbf⋅ft of torque. Magnificent Car, thanks for sharing it with us.
Stunning is right Kevin I'm in awe and to think they cut Pontiac?!!! I say put Jim Wangers in charge of GM and we would see them once again dominate the auto sector!!! His generation knew how to build an exciting automobile!!!
They still make the Buick but yeah I think Pontiac is for the History books now. Don't know why because they were awesome car's and still are if you have a classic now days.
Gr8 presentation. Nice photography, authoritative data concerning specifications, performance data, factory options . You really have an in-depth knowledge of these cars and are very well prepared.
The Brothers are actually nearing completion of a Museum that will be semi open to the public. Their collection is the most comprehensive collection of musclecars in existence.
I've never seen another muscle car collection like it. These guys have at least one example of just about every classic muscle car ever made. They must have 5 Hemi Cuda convertibles and there were only 21 of those ever built
It's a *massive* collection. In some of the previous videos, you can see quick shots of the building floor, and there are *well* over 100 cars, even that is an understatement
I owned a frame off restored 1 of 14 Red on Red /white top auto RA IV for 5 years and sold it in 2004. Wish I kept mine and may have if it were a 4 speed. Yours is a Beautiful Car !
The Ram Air IV produces a lot more than 370 horsepower. These engines were purposely underrated for insurance reasons. True ratings are more in the 440-450 area. Pontiac was very sneaky back then.
I saw a bone stock RAIV with a factory type tune make 436 horsepower at 6000 rpm on an engine dyno. You could easily get 470-480 horses out of it with just a few day 2 mods I bet like advancing the timing, a bit more aggressive cam, and headers
Still loving the show! You are usually very accurate and informative with the commentary. So I get a good chuckle when you sometimes say thinks like "boat loads of torque" !! haha

The Pontiac 400 Ram Air IV had one of the nastiest sounding idles of any engine from that era. The best high performance production engine Pontiac ever made.....besides the 421 Super Duty of course
@@AlejandroP1980s Not too many cars of that era could beat a 70 Buick GS/GSX 455 Stage 1 in the 1/4 mile with a good driver behind the wheel and the right set of gears in the rear end. In 1970 it had the 5th quickest 1/4 mile time of any new muscle car tested by any magazine. Motor Trend said the Buick Stage 1 was the quickest muscle car they had ever tested but other magazines got quicker times out of a few 426 Hemi powered Mopars and an LS6 Chevelle. The big disadvantage the Buick had was the durability of the 455 Stage 1 engine with its 2 bolt main bearing caps, thinwall casting, and undersized oiling system. That resulted in a lot of cracked engine blocks when put under an extreme load like drag racing. However they were still really quick because the Buick 455 weighed about 150 pounds less than a Chevy 454 big block despite having 1 cubic inch more of displacement
@@jeremythompson9122 Agreed. Ram Air IV camshaft was a 308/320 advertised duration which was lopey for a street car and sounded really nice. However, I never knew the engine specs on the 421, but boy oh boy, you could hear it coming from a mile ahead. What a distinctive sound that came out of the exhaust. A guy once told me in order to beat a hemi, you better pray it was slightly out of tune at the line. It takes skill to perfectly adjust both carbs and very few guys can manage it.

I had a '69 Goat and didn't look nearly that good. From the looks under the hood, it appears to have manual Drum Brakes all around and no Power Steering. Cornering Lights & Power Windows but no P/S, P/B? Mine had Power/ Front Discs but Manual Steering as well and it was bear to parallel park in the city.
Whomever these “Brothers” are who own this amazing collection, they must have some very deep pockets. How many 69 Gto buyers sprung for the power antenna on a Ram Air 4 convertible? Not many! And how do you find the parts to restore options like the power antenna?
My uncle bought a new 69 GTO and was going to trade in a 59 Eldorado convertible. The dealer offered $300 for a trade in, he asked me if I wanted it and I said no I have a car. I was 18.....whatever
OUCH. Damn, hindsight is 20/20. When I was 19, this rich couple that lived right outside town offered me a 72 Chevelle and 3k if I spent the summer (like 2 months) at their home walking their dog. Apparently they went on a cruise and European tour vacation and couldn't take their dogs with them. I really didn't want to waste my summer bored at their place so I said no. I still cringe every time I think about it. I was a stupid kid. Lol.
a RAM air IV in a convertible, with 4.33 gearing. Someone had deep pockets when ordering this, it wasn't cheap. They didn't care also about gas cost at the time as well.
I would be very curious to see a side by side performance comparison with a fully loaded car such as this one, and another stripped down with no options but identical drive train. I'll bet the Brothers have the cars to do such a thing. My guess is 5 m.p.h. and 2 tenths in the 1/4
Can't believe it doesn't have a passenger side mirror. I have seen some 64s with just one mirror which was more common but even if if it didn't come with a passenger side mirror I'd put one on for balance and looks.
MuscleCarOfTheWeek - How do I get in touch with you regarding this Ram Air IV GTO? We are organizing a prestigious Muscle Car display during next years Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, California, and I want to extend an invite to have this beautiful car in the display. @bgh70, the Judge was not a stripped-down car at all - it was a deluxe GTO with the doodads that were starting to become popular at the time. Whatever the case, both the regular GTO and the Judge were available with this engine.
The Judge was a low dollar performance car. It had many of the regular GTO options deleted, such as no trim rings on the wheels and the headlights did not close. It was built to go fast and nothing else.
@bgh70 As a rule of thumb, when someone says "Do some research on it" (as you did before you deleted it), he usually is the one who should do some research on it. As it stands, the Judge was a performance package that gave you the GTO's first step-up engine, spoiler and stripes, Rally IIs without trim rings and, I believe, Polyglas G70x14s. It was purely an image machine that had nothing to do with being low-dollar (especially considering it was over $300 over the standard GTO, which was WAY more expensive than a Road Runner or even Fairlane Cobra). Every GTO option was available for the Judge, including hidden headlights. Not sure where you got the idea that the Judge did not have hidden headlights. Are you one of those guys who sees a blue Judge with hidden headlights at a show and tells the owner that they have a fake car because Judges only came in orange without hidden headlights?
@Ron Strzelecki right about that. Driving was an absolute joy in those days and style was common. I'm 22 and love my '68 Le Mans. It's a GTO clone, but definitely gets alot of attention at the gas stations and work. Just waiting for summer to come back so I can hotrod and cruise in style again. I have the video on my channel here if you'd like to watch it. Later this year, I'm getting all kinds of new parts and really looking forward to getting a 4 speed.

It's a shame they got screwed by GM
