Passengers told to stay overnight in airport as AirAsia delays flight by over 15 hours

  • An AirAsia flight scheduled to depart from Taoyuan International Airport at 3:55 p.m. on Monday was delayed by over 15 hours, forcing many cold and hungry passengers to fend for themselves overnight. The flight finally departed Tuesday morning, but compensation from the airline has not been enough to satisfy passengers, who were told to wait in the airport overnight.     At 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, a horde of passengers crowd at the boarding gate. They’re asking ground staff to give an explanation for repeated delays to their flight.
    Now, it’s almost 4:00 a.m., and passengers are forced to stay overnight at the airport. But there are not enough blankets to go around, and many are shivering from the cold. The waiting area is packed with people, many of whom got too tired to keep waiting for blankets and went directly to sleep sitting up and wearing their own jackets to stay warm.

    A lot of people here at the airport are freezing and hungry, but the staff did not give us any reasonable explanation. They even wrote a report saying that they wanted us to stay in the airport because they were afraid that we would be too tired to travel between the airport and the hotel.
    AirAsia flight D7379 was scheduled to fly from Taoyuan International Airport to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at 3:55 p.m. on Monday. 354 passengers had already boarded the plane, when at 4:30 p.m. an announcement was made that due to an engine malfunction, all passengers had to disembark. Originally, the aircraft was expected to be repaired in 4 hours and take off at 8:30 p.m., but the gate was changed. At 2 a.m., passengers gathered at the gate, and the flight was delayed again to 4:30 a.m. At 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, the flight finally departed after a total delay of 15-and-a-half hours. AirAsia offered 500 meal coupons and discount coupons for about NT$1,330, but the passengers were not pleased.

    Everyone was cold, hungry, and without blankets. They did give us discount coupons and asked us to redeem them, but there were long lines and some stores were even closed by the time we got there. So some people couldn’t even redeem their food.

    I didn’t even claim the NT$500 meal voucher because I was so unhappy. They said they would give 200 Malaysian ringgits as compensation for making customers wait so long, but who would even want to fly with them again after this?
    AirAsia explained that the flight was delayed because repair parts had to be transferred from another flight. Since shops in the terminal had already closed for the day, staff also bought drinks and snacks for passengers. With a delay that stretched almost 16 hours, many itineraries were disrupted, and customers were left with a bitter taste in their mouths.

    Airasia canceled their flights. Waiting 3.5years and my money haven’t been refunded. It’s crazy how Taiwan allows them to operate!

    Same happening to me right now 09-09-2023.
    Flight from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur.
    3 hours delay and we do not have any news 😢

    Article 3
    If a carrier is convinced any aircraft will not be able to depart according to scheduled time so that a flight is expected to be delayed for more than fifteen minutes in cases of domestic routes or for more than thirty minutes in cases of international routes, or that air route or place of takeoff and/or landing will be changed, it shall forthwith explain to passengers in detail the reasons therefor, as well as the manners in which it will deal with the situation.
    If the delayed flight in the preceding paragraph delays more than 5 hours, passengers who do not accept the arrangement of the carrier may claim to refund their tickets from the original ticket sales office and the refund fee shall not be charged by the carrier.
    Article 4
    If a carrier delays in the transportation or changes the route or place of takeoff and/or landing so as to affect the rights or interests of passengers, it shall timely provide free of charge the following services as dictated by actual situations and the needs of passengers:
    (1)Necessary communications;
    (2)Necessary meals or accommodations;
    (3)Necessary articles to keep out the cold or first-aid articles; or
    (4)Necessary connecting flights or other vehicles.
    A carrier shall attend to the rights and interests of passengers in a reasonable manner; and if the provision of any of the foregoing services is not possible owing to local conditions, the carrier shall forthwith explain to passengers in detail the reasons therefor, and properly handle the situation.
    Article 5
    If a carrier fails to properly handle any dispute arising between passengers and such carrier in the course of transportation or after the completion thereof or if Article 3 or Article 4 hereof is violated, the CAA may act in accordance with Article 57 of this Law.

      that is true, but still...customer satisfaction should be the key. The plane need to be repaired, understandable. but the law dictate that passenger should also be compensated fairly....and I mean fairly...not by being left in the airport....

    air asia's Excuse not to advise passengers to leave airport because they are afraid they will get tired is a lame excuse. 1st place once the flight was deleayed 5hrs they should already offered a hotel accomodation for the pax or full refund

      Normally, the airline set them up in the airport Hotel. But Air Asia did better, they gave CASH, so more money for CHEAPO Holiday makers.
      For better reliability, FLY AIR CHINA.
