- You’ve probably seen Hollywood movies where a hole in the side of a plane causes utter chaos. Luckily, in reality, small damage to fuselage won't have such dramatic consequences. But a big opening in a plane’s side will. So would you believe me if I told you a pilot managed to land a plane with its much of it’s roof torn completely off?

SUMMARY:
- At 1:25 pm, on April 28, 1988, a 19-year-old Boeing 737 that belonged to Aloha Airlines left Hilo International Airport and headed for Honolulu.
- When the plane arrived at this destination, the pilots didn’t leave the cockpit or inspect the aircraft from the outside. After all, it wasn't a requirement, and they didn't have to do it.
- The length of the missing part was 18.5 ft long, and that was the aircraft skin that covered the plane from the cockpit back to the fore-wing area.
- The plane started to roll from side to side, and it was becoming increasingly harder to control. Everybody who was in the cockpit immediately put on their oxygen masks, and the captain took over the aircraft.
- All three flight attendants were standing along the aircraft aisle. The one who was the closest to the front of the plane was swept out through the hole in the roof.
- But the problem was at that time, in case of emergency, the airport control tower had to dial 911 just like anyone else. l
- As the plane was approaching the runway, the left engine failed, and the aircraft started rocking and shaking. The captain made an attempt to restart the engine but didn't succeed.
- Everyone on the plane, except for the flight attendant who had been pulled out of the plane, was alive, although 65 people were injured. Most people had been hurt by flying debris and torn pieces of fuselage.
- During one interview that followed the accident, passenger Gayle Yamamoto remembered that she had spotted a crack in the fuselage when she was boarding. Unfortunately, she was the only one who had seen this damage, and the woman hadn't thought that the crack was important enough to inform the crew.

@ ruwa 1n07 gaming I know how bright side tried to make it look amusing and all and I am also not being triggered. It's just that at 35000 feet, if something like that happens you will get a heart attack, all the passengers are lucky that they survived, have you travelled via plane and noticed the turbulence sometimes, that is very scary.
I remember the news coverage on this....that pilot was the kind that you always hope would be flying a plane you were in. Incredible story.

My uncle, a now retired pilot, was flying the plane that was supposed to land next. They were diverted to another island that day, but allowed to land the next day. He saw the damaged plane. Later he told us there was no way the pilot should have been able to safely land the plane with all the damage.

Imagine you’re looking out the window looking at planes and you see a damaged plane with no roof and a failed engine just gliding in the air.
I really HOPE that a lot of people see this. I was living in Hawaii at the time that this took place. What you are not being told is when this plane was on the assembly line, the very next plane being assembled behind it was sold to Singapore airlines. THAT PLANE SUFFERED THE SAME EXACT FATE! THE ROOF CAME OFF IN FLIGHT. Coincidence? That is what the talking heads said at that time . . . I do not buy it.

Flight attendent who swept out through the hole in the roof was "flight attendant Clarabelle Lansing" ( wikipedia ). Rest In Peace.
I lived on Oahu at the time this happened. Four months later I took a flight to Maui and the plane was still at the airport with a tarp over the missing part. It was storming when we landed so the tarp was flapping and we could see inside the aircraft. It is one thing to hear about it, watch the news stories on it, but a whole other to see the plane. I cannot imagine what the crew and passengers went through. May Clarabelle Lansing rest in peace.

2. Captain Robert Shortsthemier was the one flying the plane the entire time.
3. The flight attendant who was swept from the plane was Clarabelle Lansig (Not something you got wrong but a nice fact) and the one that dragged herself up an down the isle was Michelle Honda

My cousin, Bill Ridgway, was seated in the center of the roofless section. The lost stewardess had just walked by him. I wasn't aware, or dont' know, if the Gail mentioned is his wife. But her name is Gail, and she is Japanese. I do know that she won't fly anymore. And when Bill came back to the states to visit his parents, he had to travel alone.
