    Excellent analysis. One of the most revealing cuts for me is going from Logan's back at a table set out for the family at his estate, to his back at a board meeting in the office. Because this is a man that runs his family as a company - and thinks of his company as his true offspring. And Succession is indeed the true successor (ha!) to GOT, because power and family is also what GRRM was really fascinated with. Unfortunately B&W were too simple minded to understand more than "t*ts and twists".

    This was really insightful but I would push back on the idea that Succession defies the Game of Thronesian big budget trend. They don't have CGI dragons or massive fight scenes, but they do have a lot of characters in private jets and helicopters, the sets of their homes are all luxury condos and duplexes, and they frequently seen in extremely shiny and chrome office buildings. So they still spend a fair bit of money to portray a mega-rich family.

    If you look at it that way, the whole looking at Dad from a distance could be interpreted as the kids sizing him up, as if they're almost hunting him. Obviously Logan is not prey but his children had made a habit of biting more than they can chew

    To everyone saying it's Logan's family; have you watched the show? Season 2 literally shows us where Logan lived as a young child in Dundee. He had a poor childhood until his mother sent him to Canada to live with his uncle who had some money but not the amount depicted in the opening credits.
    The opening credits are meant to be symbolic of the type of dysfunctional rich family dynamics portrayed in the show, particularly the psychological effects of child negligence from an absent father and self-indulgent mother.

    • @FractalRaver
      @FractalRaver 2 роки тому +1

      Brian Wilcox had to fight to let them use Dundee. And yes, in the family footage he’s walking away and separated in every shot. And the music is awesome. Succesion's Opening is a masterpiece. You don't need any flashbacks throughout the show to understand their lifes as kids because in the Opening you already see everything that's there to see: They doing expensive things by themselves (rarely together) without the presence of their father.

    Yeah, the intro makes it look like the kids grew up in the 60s, when they grew up in the 80s and 90s... not to mention there has to be like a 20 year difference between Connor and Roman, no way they were ever kids together...

    Im captivated by the brief but poignant the shot of the feet... its comprehensible to me only on an emotional level. It encompasses a sense of helplessness, children caught up in a world not made for children. Also, I have a issue with showing the blurry family picture hung at the top of the stairs. It reeks of lineage. But we are not talking old money here. Logan bulldozed his way from the bottom... So where as the poetic license of the opening doesn't bother me in general, here I struck with suspended belief.

    I think the credits show Shiv and Tom's kids, not the Roy kids we see in Succession. It's the future. The wife in the credits is blonde or redheaded, like Shiv, not dark-haired like Caroline. The back of the head is Tom.

    There is more than 20 years age difference between Connor and the other three. Yet they all look the same height and similar in age in the last shot of the four kids left there as Logan walks away from them.

    It seems so strange to me that people take the opening credits so literally, like it’s actually home movie footage of the Roys as children. That makes no sense. The time period is all wrong (not just the film stock but the fashion as well), but more importantly, the casting makes clear that those kids at the beginning cannot possibly be playing Connor, Kendall, Roman and Shiv in any literal sense.
    Firstly, they look nothing like the Roys. The younger girl’s colouring is all wrong . Secondly, there is no more than three or four years difference in age between her and the eldest boy. By contrast, there is more than thirty years difference in age between Alan Ruck and Sarah Snook. Ruck is playing someone a little younger than himself, but there is still clearly at least about twenty years difference in age between the two characters.
    The show is about family, and about the way that wealth can impose a distance between the family members. The opening credits represent this with a GENERIC rich family, that has obvious parallels with the Roys (eg three boys and one girl), but that doesn’t mean it’s literally them.

    Connor is supposed to be much than Kendall, yet in the opening footage, he looks only a few years older. The kids’ clothes don’t look all that 80s/early 90s either. Were the younger Roy kids initially supposed to be closer in age to Connor, but things changed once the actors were cast?

    Anyone else notice that the Dad in the old footage is way too tall to be Logan? I think that symbolizes how the child overestimate Logan and his abilities, and view his as an overpowering figure.

    I had to stop watching as the kids on the elephant triggered an experience where I rode this elephant as a child. It was Patricia who only died recently,. I remember visiting the zoo and seeing Patricia banging her head against the fence. The zoo no longer keeps lone elephants or rides. It's symbolic of things that were around in childhood that were normal but actually traumatic.

    Why are y'all not mentioning that it's very obviously not the Roys in the intro? Even when Jeremy Strong and Sarah Snook show up, the other kids are obviously younger than them. The time period and fashion doesn't make sense. The kids' ages aren't right. It's just meant to represent the Roys, not literally be them. Even though some of the actors are the same.
