  • Another video on what I believe is the best current TV show, HBO's succession. In a show that is flush with incredible performances, one of the best is Kieran Culkin portraying the sick and devilishly funny Roman Roy. One of Succession's biggest enigmas is what makes Roman, Roman. In this video, I dive into the rabbit-hole of Roman's past and the depth with which the Succession writes craft this strange and interesting character.

I don't think Roman misremembered his emotional experiences during the Dog Pound Game, I think his brothers didn't realize the extent of Roman's trauma as children. This analysis takes too much at face value regarding 1x08. I don't think Roman is necessarily an unreliable narrator here. A feature of childhood abuse is that it's completely normalised by those around you, and you only start to realise it was abusive when you get older. Roman may not even have conceptualised the game as abusive until adulthood. In fact, I fully believe that's what happened. Now, do I think his siblings intended to abuse him? No. But they were clearly unsupervised by anyone who could say 'Don't do that to your little brother', or the adults around them didn't say anything because they too thought Roman was enjoying himself (because they were shitty adults). What Conor said about Logan shows to me that Logan saw Roman being bullied and abused, and instead of protecting him, saw his son's difficulty in standing up for himself as weakness not fear, and sent him away to toughen up.

Yep, exactly what I was thinking. It’s very weird going through stuff as a child and trying to reconcile your memories and find out if they’re true, especially when siblings have different memories of the same abusive experience. Logan probably lied to Roman’s siblings and told them a different story about why Roman got sent to military school. Connor is the unreliable narrator here, not Roman.

actually a detail that might be another thing (also was mentioned by kieran culkin) is that roman doesn't really eat. there are some scenes where he does but a lot of the time he has a full plate when others don't or he's having a smoothie or something instead of a meal. which also maps on pretty well into the shame and everything. it's a detail that you really only start seeing once you clue into it and that's kind of great because it's not like anyone in the show is paying attention to it

Every time, when others are eating and putting food on their plate from a full buffet of choices or when they’re at business meals, roman only picks at the food (takes a bite of a bread roll, nibbles on a cracker, etc.) that’s all he does and I think it’s such a good and interesting point. He makes a lot of 'jokes' surrounding that kind of stuff, like being molested and abused as a kid, and the one thing that was kind of unnerving about it ... was in S2:E5 ... he delivered the joke about being in Gerri's bathroom with the same intonation and body language as he does all of those other jokes, but as the audience - we know the bit about Gerri is truth, so it makes you wonder the depth of his other 'jokes' and if there is any truth to them as well.

His behaviors and comments and inability to have normal interactions with partners are all signs of the abuse and he makes comments in jest that are actually based in fact but ppl don't take him seriously because of how unfiltered he tends to be. He mentioned a camp counselor molesting him when he was 12 but it was so glossed over and never mentioned again. Culkin- People rewrite their own history. I have six siblings, and we all remember certain things differently. ...
The dog-cage moment, Roman had rewritten it as he had been bullied by Kendall. I don’t think he ever was, but I think there was something in him as a kid that felt like a victim that as an adult he has tried to process and make into something else. Talking to Jeremy at that time, I had privately had this idea that when we were kids, he wasn’t a bully, and I was the younger sibling bullying him, in the way that a younger sibling is always getting the older one in trouble. He privately had thought the same thing. So when we got to the dog-cage thing, it was fun to explore that. That is Roman rewriting it. Kendall didn’t really bully him.

While I won't discount the possibility of Roman having experienced sexual abuse, I'm glad this analysis did not go down that route. Roman's issues surrounding intimacy of any sort can be explained by Logan's verbal and physical abuse alone. For me it tracks that dominance/degradation and pleasure are entertwined for a person who has always sought validation from a man like Logan. A man who encouraged the kids to play at a survival of the fittest game.
This, coupled with Roman's inability to connect with people, makes it understandable why the character would shy away from touch. The "sex stuff" is clearly not a kink, but yet another manifestation of Roman's abuse.
I'm curious how Caroline fits into Roman's past. We know from the S3 talk with Shiv that Caroline was largely absent from the kid's upbringing. Does Roman have an idolized view of his mother because of the distance? I'd be interested to know, but I love that the show does not provide easy and obvious answers.

Roman got the fake girlfriend solely because he was afraid of this scenario. It's literally the cherry on top of the whole show so far since Logan himself wasn't sure the whole time what he wants to do with his legacy, but Roman was consistently the best candidate to inherit the firm since he's the one who resembles his father the most. Once in awhile a acting role comes along that's perfect for a particular actor. Almost like it was written for them. Sometimes they actually were. Think Mary Tyler Moore and the Mary Tyler Moore show. The fit is so perfect it's hard to imagine someone else playing the character. I believe this is what happened to Kieran Culkin when he was given the role of Roman Roy. Jeremy Strong, the actor playing Kendall Roy gets a lot of the attention, but I think Culkin is brilliant. The downside for getting such an amazing role is that it will be hard for some people to accept you in any other role.

No matter how much of a demi god, a genius among incompetents he believed himself to be, no matter how many times he turns against his own children to affirm his own perceived greatness, he will end up in the dirt. And there’s not a goddamn thing he can do about it. Love ❤️ a good breakdown and Analysis 🧐 regarding Succession.
However, I noticed that you didn’t mention anything about the possibility of his sexual abuse. He jokes about this way too much for it to be ignored. And, his siblings make constant reference to some possible Mommy issues as well. Since this is basically taking a plot from King 👑 Lear you cannot avoid the Shakespearean reference of “truer things are often said in jest”. Especially, since Roman does use humor as a deflection from his insecurities and feelings. I think they all are scarred from the divorce as well when their Father supposedly took them from their mother in the UK and relocated to New York City. You can see that from the dialogue between Shiv and her mother at her Mother’s wedding that she views that as a sense of abandonment and I’m sure the other siblings view that as abandonment as well. I think Roman’s terrified of failure and intimacy therefore this affects his ability to perform unless the person is “dead” and unable to judge 👩🏽‍⚖️ or critique him. Yet, he still hungers and craves the warm fuzzies 🥰 from Gerri since he probably NEVER received that from his own Mother.

All the sibs have moments of self-awareness. Roman's always stand out because of how little he hides his awfulness. It makes him truly sympathetic when he recalls his victimhood (although I will never forgive that million dollar check stunt, it remember it whenever I start to feel sorry for him).
The unreliable narrators are Connor and Kendall. They were gaslighting him about his enjoyment of being put in a cage, something common for co-conspirators of abuse. They may have been doing it unconsciously because they convinced themselves that they did not hurt him, also something common for co-conspirators, especially family members. It seems strange that you decided that because Connor and Kendall agreed to their story that means that Roman enjoyed being treated like an unwanted dog and was misremembering events. He doesn't remember it being fun, and who would? I think it's easier to see the shame he carries coming in part from that abuse. Kendall was his brother who he loved and thought that the dog cage came was showing love even while it made him feel powerless and afraid. Even Conner who more easily showed love to the sibs didn't help him. Probably because he allowed Kendall (and maybe Shiv and Logan) convince him that it was something other than abuse. A key to Kendall's real understanding of the game was slamming Roman against the wall after discussing it. To me that was him remberring how powerful the game made him feel, and how he was able to use it to get rid of Roman. Your conclusion that Roman was riddled with self-loathing makes sense. But you don't source it correctly. The way you put it he was born with it and the game was evidence of that. But trauma doesn't work that way. He was a victim of a competition he didn't know he was in.

I’ve yet to see an analysis on Roman that addresses his desperate cry to make sense of everything.
There were multiple times throughout season 1 and 2 (I don’t think so much in season 3) where he made passing (and some direct) comments about wanting to talk. Some towards Logan himself.
He’s been the only one in that family who has advocated for a genuine sense of therapy. I can only imagine Roman was secretly hopeful about the forced therapy session they underwent in season two but who knows.
This guy wants his family and to love which is wild considering I’m talking about Roman Romulus Roy of all people 😅 but it’s like what people say about comedians. Most of them are only so funny because they’re hurting so badly inside. I think he, unlike shiv and Kendall, wants to be free from the hurt (and no I wouldn’t include Kendall because his reflection scene in the S03 finale stemmed from the fatal mistake he made in S01. Had the waiter never died, he’d be on his same rampage as per usual). Roman has been on the same submissive yet hopeful track since the very first episode.

I wonder how much the brilliance of the writing, and also the realistic nature of the characters psychology, is due to the writers allowing the actors to improv a lot, and perhaps even working with the actors to draw things out of their actual psyche. A director who is famous for this approach, this method where the movie began with a concept only, and the actual script was never truly written, but rather developed as he would sit with the actors and build the characters upon things that actually existed within the actors psyche ( almost like writing via therapeutic discussions,) is *Mike Leigh*. I highly recommend his _Naked, Meantime,_ and _Secrets and Lies,_ but other Mike Leigh fans will suggest other Mike Leigh films ( as a former angry violent young man, and also someone from an interracial family, the three examples I just gave appeal most to me most, personally.) Leigh's work is fascinating for anybody who enjoys psychologically realistic characters. In fact I bet you a dime to a dollar that Jesse Armstrong is a fan of Mike Leigh.

One small detail - Hibs and Hearts are not from Logan's home town. They are both rivals based in Edinburgh. Logan is from Dundee. The other interesting behaviour is his pattern of sheepishly asking women to marry him before they have any kind of real intimacy. Is it his way of humiliating himself and them at the same time?
And now I'm remembering that he started dating Tabitha right after she hooks up with Tom at the bachelor party and she makes him swallow his own... pride. Roman definitely goes for women who have the power to lorde over and humiliate men.

The Dog Pound game was always horrible for everyone, but in childhood the kids were so much under their dad’s thrall that they were somehow convinced it was a positive thing. Similar to how a child might think the attention from their molesting father is “love” until they know better in adulthood.
I think this Dog pound game memory will resurface in the series down the road.

  • @RedHairedRiot
    @RedHairedRiot 2 роки тому +12

Honestly I totally hear you on all of these points, but I have one more theory to raise you:
You keep showing flashes of the Kendall breakdown scene. I am so so surprised you didn’t address Roman’s monologue in it, the “who hasn’t killed a kid?” Rhetoric he spewed. He even went so far as to discuss “hitting a kid with his Porsche.” After that scene, i sort of got the impression the brothers may not be so different after all. What if, some time during military school or otherwise, Roman had an incident of that magnitude? And he returns home with all this built up guilt, and faces his father covering it up for him (he “loves” him), and it was when Roman was young enough to stifle him for the rest of his life AND leave him completely impotent and otherwise. In ADDITION to all of the points you’ve mentioned. And I think Roman would not be so quick to reveal that information to his siblings, but it did explain why he was so quick to defend Kendall’s actions-cause he’s already done those mental gymnastics for himself. We already know from the show that the brothers have both participated in similar evil-look at the homeless man incident-so I think it’s not out of the realm that the Roy Family curse keeps coming back, and hitting them at different points in different ways. I mean, what’s more of a curse-killing a kid in your youth and living with that forever, or killing a kid as an adult and having to keep that to yourself while you face your family every single day with the guilt? And didn’t they seem a little TOO ready to cover the incident with Kendall? Almost as though they had done that before?
Either way, I think the events surrounding Roman will come more to light as he continues to rise from the Ashes of his fathers shadow, where Roman has equated “love” = humiliation and verbal berating. Remember the episode where his father hit him? That really made me think there was more here.

I don't watch this show nor am I interested in watching it (I prefer sci-fi series like The Expanse) but I love watching these videos out of context. It's very entertaining lol.

Excuse me, both dog pound narratives might be true. Roman might be remembering it as how he felt it, but they might remember it as how roman portrayed it to them at the time. Sometimes people who get picked on will pretend that everything is fine, when it's not, so Roman's feelings about the whole thing could be stemming from him remembering it out from how he actually felt inside, and not remembering playing it off to his brothers, But then his brothers remember it as him enjoying it since that's maybe what he showed them to not seem weak.

I actually completely disagree as to why roman went to boot camp; he wanted to constantly be demeaned and bossed around. Added heinsight with that weird scene recently in season four where he listens to the edited clip of logan insulting him over and over

He didn't "misremember his emotions." "You enjoyed it," "you wanted it" is something abusers frequently say to their victims. The fact that his emotions are dismissed and he's being gaslit into thinking he liked it are part of why he's so wounded. I'm afraid you really made this video from a standpoint of profound ignorance about abuse.

my take is that he could have pretended to enjoy it to appease his brothers but since it was so long ago he only remember how it made him feel on the inside, whilst the others remember what they saw in his face (which was all pretend to appease).
