A set of jokes as told by: Brian Cant, Toni Arthur, Tony Robinson, Jeremy Irons, Julie Stevens & Anne-Marie Hackett PLUS the closing theme sung by all.
Playaway = British production at its finest. Brian Cant was everyones fantasy dream infant, primary teacher and probably junior teacher. Really can not say enough about his positive influence of children of decades ago
Jeremy Irons went on to play Charles Ryder in Brideshead Revisited. When he got that role, he should have put a word in for Brian Cant to play Sebastian Flyte. One advantage Brian had over Anthony Andrews was that he had a lot more experience of working with teddy bears. Certainly Aloysius was something of a colossus compared to even Big Ted.
If you do a UA-cam search for: 'Playaway BBC Childrens TV 1975 Brian Cant Jeremy Irons Toni Arthur' you can see another rendition of the closing theme. I downloaded this in the early summer and it seemed to disappear not long before Brian Cant died and I have not seen it since. Was glad to be able to upload it for you to enjoy again.
I can't tell you what a joy this programme was to us children when you had five hours of horseracing on two of the only three channels available on a Saturday afternoon back in the 70's. Brian Cant was a legend
That takes me back,Saturday afternoon,1970s, BBC2,test card all day and then countdown to this at four o clock, followed by a televisual feast over on BBC1,Basil Brush,Doctor Who,The Generation Game,The Duchesss Of Duke Street(or some other drama)The News at nine,That's Life!,Starsky and Hutch/Kojak etc.The quality of TV sets is better now but back then we had better quality shows and only on three channels.
Totally shocked , I was an avid viewer of the TVs series playaway , sadly missed by all of the lucky viewers who's living rooms you graced . It's the old cliche "you'll miss me when I'm gone" how true that is , we should acknowledge them when they bring happiness & love into our homes & hearts xx
Hey! Those gags are pretty good. Here is a nother.... Q: What do you call a man with a banana stuck in each of his ears?? A: Call 'im anything you like! He can't HEAR you!!
I always found Toni Arthur a bit bohemian and constantly mused that she was free to wander, shoelessly, to the (then) alternative world of vegans, cannabis, copious amounts of folk music and muesli. The kind of sort that looked upon Christmas as pleasant social intercourse rather than tons of presents, television and grub. She was a bit of a bird, upon reflection. How time heals fragmented memories. Brian Cant glued it all together of course - top top man.
I once met Toni Arthur at a Hot gossip audition back in 1978. She didn’t get the job but to see her undulating and gyrating was a sight to remember. She was actually very good but I think she didn’t get the job because of who she was and too old.
LSD and acid obviously easily available during that era .. Jeremy Irons went on to do classic movies such as The Mission, Kingdom of Heaven, Dead Ringers, Lolita (*coughs*) and erm... Dungeons and Dragons and Eragon (*double coughs*). Can anyone give Jeremy a decent swords and sorcery movie - maybe the movie adaptation of The Name of The Wind ??!?!?!?
Now you know where I get a few of my ideas for jokes when I call Alan Robson's Nightowls on Metro Radio. Brian Cant a great talent R.I.P and early clip of Classics Actor Jeremy Irons. Film the Mission based on true story of Freedom & Faith in God v Empire, greed, exploitation & religion. The ending made me cry.
The very same, he can be found in tank-top, glasses and basinhead haircut in the 2cnd part of this vid (see "RELATED VIDEOS" in the right hand column")
No sign of this in Mr.Iron's online resume, Is he ashamed? He shouldn't be, But those jokes are atrocious. I think Jeremy is brilliant in this, he brings such gravitas to his part, and his mime skills are outstanding...
What's so bad about that? They were wearing those funny little masks just like you'd see in a cartoon...I can see how an American audience might take issue with the sound of the word "nickers", but otherwise I don't see what's so scandalous...
I guess we all have to start somewhere in life in order to earn a crust but Jeremy Irons was really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. He must have been desperate.
+Jack Smith Yes, but hardly befitting a so-called great 'thespian' though, is it. Let's face it - you wouldn't catch Robert De Niro or Michael Caine doing this.

I am therefore two years older than you as I was born in 1970. Takes me back to childhood memories!
That was Jeremy Irons best work. He really let things slip after that.
Yeah, what happened to him?
@@davidmansell5986 He was the villain in Die Hard, a theatre actor and university chancellor.
He was Scar in the Lion King
@@marcprimo1471 Exactly.
RIP Brian. Thanks for the memories.

Come to think of it, must have been mine too.

Is it just me, or was Toni Arthur really hot?
I didn't know that she was ill with a fever! Where's the treatment to bring her temperature back to normal?
1:10 😆 Look at Jeremy crawling around behind them
Yes! A great start to a glittering career!

I was just thinking this was from a time where a little adult humor didn't do anyone any harm :)
Not like today though.
What are we a pair of? Nutters!

Scintillating notes of innuendo and areola titillation... Ah! Those formative enlightenments and discoveries...
haha young jeremy irons
Watching this....she still does

jeremy irons played a great part in the drama film, Longitude
Jeremy Irons' finest work if you ask me.

What are we a pair of? Oh God, it's frightening that I had to watch this as a kid.
i remember thinking so;-)
What are we a pair of? A right ol' pair of bleedin' Charlies. And make no mistake. But Toni Arthur though ❤

LSD is 'acid'

Only kidding. I used to enjoy this as a kid... Got to admit, though, it's proper daft!

Is that Christopher Guest on bass aka Nigel Tufnel from Spinal Tap......look at his head movements....is has to be?
"A pair of (k)nickers."
And they called this a KIDS' show??!
hahahaha. oh jeremy..
Damn! You missed the bit with Tony Robinson singing (he looked such a geek in this!)

i loved this programme on a saturday after the football results at my nans house
@__@ Have you got any more of this? *fascinated*
Total Classic. MIck Jagger would have made a great presenter on this show.
What are we a pair of?
Brian Cant is Brian Creeps
Zippy, sue!!
Doubt Zippy existed at this time.
Mmmm Jeremy.....
Have you got any clips with Lionel Morton in?
He is my Dad
@forcommongood and of course it's the only thing i notice :)
Tony Robinson?
You mean that Sod-off Baldrick in Blackadder?
Play School: The Directors Cut
that Toni Arthur was quite alright wasn't she!
Why can't i find Derek Griffith on here?
The guy who used to do a show called "fingerbobs" said the b.b.c. was a hotbed of pot back then.
Was it Jonathan Cohen on the piano with big hair?
This is nearly as weird as seeing Robert De Niro on Sesame Street!
Oh,wait! He's on the other one,sorry!
Monty Python on drugs !

No wonder I grew up with a warped mind LMAO
You can feel Jimmy Saville in the wings
It could be worse - it could be Jimmy Savile.
Pretty creepy, sis.

I came here for the cringe, but I wasn't prepared for the sheer buttock-clenching awfulness of it.
It's 47 years old, so newsflash - it's a bit dated. Cope
@@SundaeRoastNewsflash, it sucked in 1974 too. Grapple.
@@BunkHarvestIII Aww, diddums
@@BunkHarvestIII And yet here you are, watching it 🤣
@@BunkHarvestIII It was immensely popular in the 70s, mate. Get over it
0.13 Definite twinkle in Brian's eye at the thought of being in bed with Toni !
I don't remember it being this weird.
