Every once in a while I end up here, in the UA-cam's rabbit hole of curly hair styling. Now that I'm trying for the first time to let my hair grow freely, this video was very informative.
The problem with haircare videos on YT is that nothing completely suits my hair. By that I mean I have 2c - 3C curly hair on my crown and 1A to 2B straight hair on my back and sides. As soon as you started talking about the cuticle, moisture, product issue this definitely clicked. Seeing your hair without any treatment is exactly how mine ends up looking. Appreciate the breakdown. I've been using a leave in conditioner which has helped immensely, but towards the end of the day it starts to frizz out regardless. Time to do my own research and experimentation with products that will moisturise and seal my cuticles.

I think this video saved my hair. I've just watched it, haven't tried anything yet but this morning I was thinking pretty hard about cutting my hair because I thought it was hopeless.
Dude I’m growing my hair out and I’ve been trying to power through this long awkward phase and your videos have helped me continue pushing forward! I just want it to be long already!! 😂
Nice vid. Worth mentioning that using hairdryer on top of holding cream is only a viable option to guys that aren’t balding or thinning as this procedure can REALLY boost balding and shedding. And yes even if you apply hair oils afterwards.
Sooo helpful! My wiry, thick, coarse wavy hair was clearly not getting enough styling product (or moisturizing cream) and that's why it was so frizzy/puffy. thanks!
@@Growth_Journey I'm a bit confused about what you wrote since straight hair can be both straight and coarse or straight and fine/medium. But yes, it did make a difference, particularly if - as he stated- you resist the temptation to touch your hair until the cast has formed. The other thing I did was come in with a layer of gel (after the mousse) to ensure there was enough hold.
My hair looks same as yours when it’s dry, but little more thicker. When it’s wet, it’s exactly like yours and I was struggling fixing it, hope this helps me
Man Thomas, been following ya since like 2018, and you really work so hard behind everything related to men's hair. You deserve way more subscribers by now.
Wow i haven’t been able to find a video with such great info specific to my hair type. My hair super to the second guy in the video. Thank you for this!
I used to have hair that was dry af and curly and I literally just started using only shampoo, then dampen hair and use coconut oil on 40% dry hair (5 to 6 drops for 2 to 3 inches of hair) and combing them back, then tying a towel over it for an hour and viola, frizz free hair for a whole day, just keep running fingers to the back for curl definition. Works for two days easy, but I wash hair everyday, with shampoo on alternate days and only water on other days, then combing it back without using any oil and tying the towel. Works like a charm, hair never been healthier, Alhamdulillah.
this is like exactly my hair type (also high porosity) and I’ve always wondered if I needed something more than just leave in. This answered my question so thank u!!
So here’s the BIG question - how do I get my husband to use products in his hair? 😂 I love his hair when it’s wet but when it dries it’s a HUGE frizz ball
I was hoping for some advice-- You say you hate men cutting their hair because they think it’s shit, and I feel the same! That’s what I’m desperately trying to prevent. Thankfully winter has bought me a little time but it’s still a problem. My boyfriend does tattoos, and he has curly hair that isn’t quite long enough for a bun or pony. So while tattooing, it’s almost always in his face. He doesn’t want to push it back and contaminate his gloves/needle etc. He hates the frizz, and I love the curls but sometimes being in a hurry he doesn’t let me do the things I have guessed would handle the frizz and keep him curly like I love. He has bought some of the face masks that were like, I dunno spandex maybe? That are just like, small sleeves for your face. He’s cut them in half to use as a headband. It’s a decent solution but doesn’t hold well, nor does it look…. Good. It doesn’t look very good. With people’s tendency to photograph the process of getting a tattoo, I don’t want people posting pictures where he looks goofy. So I decided to look up solutions and ended up on your video after watching jesse’s. I’ll say I like your detail and energy much better. What would you recommend?
Jesse's: curl creme>reactivator Thomas's routine: leave in conditioner>style with loads of mousse>fiddle/lay the cast (dont touch it til dry)>air dry or heat protectant then blow dry w/diffuser>break the cast w oil Also Thomas: "I pride myself in the simplicity of my routine" XD
im 4 years into growing out my incredibly thick, coarse 3b ringlets. (sorry thomas but u have 2c/3a at most cos my ringets are the width of a sharpie and aint NO WAY im type 4/kinky/afro w my white ass) lets just say the awkward phase was more of a car crash phase, but wet styling with heavy curl creams and leave in moisture made even my shorter phases look eviable. now im at a point where every day im amazed by what my hair can do (all this to say, i use Kerastase's expensive ass curl line so no shit it looks good) but even with whatever i could find, it's really all about the way you treat curls and waves out of the shower, rather than the wash itself. always a leave in conditioner, always a mousse/curl cream/gel/oil butter sometimes a serum/oil and you're set for bouncy and shiny defined curls. my own hair and love for styling it has lead me to becoming a hairdresser
I’m trying out the no shampoo method. Hopefully my body’s natural oils will do the rest. How people can spend all of this money on products is beyond me. I’m curious to see if hair care products are just a huge marketing scheme.
Jesse’s hair is total goals! I permed my hair to get it curly but everytime I apply a curling cream, my hair just goes back to straight >.< any suggestions for what I can apply to get my permed hair to pop?
The curl cream may be a bit too heavy which may be weighing the hair down. Have you tried mousse? It’s FAR lighter and allows the hair to keep its bounce.
I would do a lightweight botanical gel or mousse! Such as innersense I create volume gel/“lotion” (it’s a gel, just a very liquidy one) and for mousse I really like the ones from the doux and innersense
If anybody is struggling with coarse curly hair, I recommend looking into Japanese Hair Straightening. It's a lot like the keratin one you got a couple years back except it's permanent. I tried embracing my curls in the beginning, but no matter what, it just wasn't for me and I was never happy with it. I get the hair straightening treatment done once a year at the beginning of summer, and it stays good for about 9 months before the roots start growing too visibly different. Then I heat straighten the roots for the remaining 3 months or so, and it's basically minimal work, for perfectly manageable hair all year. :)

Only comb it with wide tooth comb when it's wet to detangle or when you're conditioning your hair to spread the conditioner.
