Ugly Kid Joe depending on who you ask is either a relic of hair metal, , or were comedic hard partying band with a pretty diverse background or both. Despite working hard to make it, their success came pretty quickly and in today’s video let’s explore the detailed history of the band.
The constants in Ugly kid Joes lineup has always been guitarist Klaus Eichstadt and frontman Whitfield Crane who grew up a block away from each other in Palo Alto. Crane’s father would split when he was young recalling to Loudersound My dad split when I was a young kid and that was tumultuous for me growing up. I was always trying to fill that void. I liked sports and what not, but then I found Black Sabbath’s Paranoid. I was hooked immediately, and all those motherfuckers - Halford, Bon Scott, Ozzy, Ronnie Van Zant, Hendrix - became like my father figures.
At the time palo alto was considered middle class by the members own admission but with the rise of silicon valley over the past two decades that’s drastically changed. Funny enough Crane would admit to Loudersound his sister still lives in Palo Alto one block away from Google’s Co-Founder Larry Page. While the future musicians attended the same junior high the pair wouldn’t meet until grade 8 at a dance where Crane offered Eichstadt a joint. Crane would recall to a baca raton paper “klaus and i were the total opposite of chick magnets. We were like chick repellents. Kind of loner type guys.’. Crane would remark that he always got the pair in trouble and Eichstadt was great at getting the pair out of trouble.
It was following high school the pair of musicians ditched Palo Alto feeling it was too serious, relocating to Santa Barbara for school. They eventually moved not too far away to the college party town of Isla Vista , just outside of Santa Barbara. It was here in 1989 Ugly Kid Joe would be formedby Eichstadt and Crane started rehearsing in a small car sized room with posters of Public Enemy and Metal Bands. The band’s music would be inspired by the likes of Judas Priest, AC/DC, early Motley Crue, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Megadeth and Red Hot Chili Peppe . While Lyrically, they would look to Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and rap groups. Ugly Kid Joe would blend heavy metal, folk and funk.
The band went through several monickers initially including Overdrive and later on SWAT which stood for suburban white alcoholic trash and later on i don’t know if i can say this one youtube the regurgitated anal vapors. Maybe you guys could read lips on that one.
In their early years the band were desperate to play any club or open for any band who would have them. According to Spin magazine it was a sympathetic club owner in Santa Barbara who offered them the chance to open for glam rockers Pretty Boy Floyd. The band was ecstatic thinking that Pretty Boy Floyd would draw a lot of females to the show. For that particular show the band came up with their permanent monicker ‘ugly kid joe.’ Eichstadt would recall to Spin “I said, let’s go with something dumb like ugly kid joe, you know opening for pretty boy floyd. Everybody kinda chuckled and we were like ‘yeah it’d look pretty funny on the marquee and we could like give a dollar off for ugly chicks or something.” Unfortunately the gig got cancelled, but Eichstadt had already drawn the band’s logo - the kid he envisioned ugly kid joe to be. Eichstadt ended up taking his drawing to a local santa barbara artist Moish Brenman who worked at a local Santa Barbara skate shop. The band would pay him 14 dollars to draw the logo and paid him in snacks as well including a mountain dew, a candy bar and a bag of doritos according to spin magazine. . Crane would tell Spin “the ugly kid joe character is a precise amalgamation of each member of the band.’
The band soon recorded a demo and the tide shifted in their favour and they soon were playing to crowds of hundreds of people. The band by their own admission had no dreams of signing a record deal, instead hoping that the local radio would just play their music.
Their demo to a local DJ named Will Carlin who then passed it onto an entertainment lawyer who became the band’s manager. That demo tape soon l
Ugly Kid Joe fan?
I was 12 when they hit it big and I only listened to their one hit. A few years ago I decided to listen to the rest of the album and it’s surprisingly good.
Definitely, highly under rated. Their covers are killer. I love their Sweet Leaf cover. Neighbor is such a good fuckin song.
Yesssss!!!!! 🤘
Man Ugly Kid Joe is one of my All Time Favorite Bands!! Whiplash liquor pays tribute to their former band name in the lyrics...Suburban, White, Alcoholic Trash! Sweet Leaf cover is amazing, showing love to Ozzy! God Damn Devil, Tomorrow's World, Madman, Panhandling Prince all just blew me away!! My band still plays Everything about you, simply because it's so recognized to this day but if I had it my way I'd play something else from their incredible catalog. I have so much respect for what they did musically!!
@@craigrock8444 Check out the Richards/Crane collaboration. So good. Whit's voice is amazing on a song called "Someday" from the Richards/Crane album.
I think Milkmans Son is such an amazing song. Such an underrated band.
My favourite UKJ song. Great riff & well written.
And Busy Bee. These guys had some chops.
@graywolf4206 love that one and Mr. Recordman too.
Cloudy skies was pretty good for their "ballad"
@@warwithin7mr record man classic. But.. dude listen to the newer stuff
I saw them at a small venue back in 1996, they played for over 2 hours. I’ve seen a lot of shows and UKJ is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I’ll never forget it. THEY ROCKED!!
Imagine if they were black African fellas 😮
I would love to go back to 96 in WC Ugly Kid Joe. You can't beat that 90s music all my favorite rock songs came from that era
You were drunk!
Beavis " why does this guy called Ugly Kid Joe, he's not even ugly?"
Butthead " do you find him attractive Beavis?"
Beavis " shut up Butt-Head"
I was listening to UKJ just the other day. They should’ve been so much bigger than they ever got. The production on their albums is so damn good and the guitar playing is awesome.
They wood have been bigger if they were black 🫡
The BASS PLAYER, DUH!
Just saw them this summer. They released four or five videos this past year. This band ROCKS HARD.
The end.
Seriously? New releases?! Thank you! I will look them up now. I loved them when they came out. Awesome to know that they are still at it.
I remember that album America's least wanted being a really solid listen front to back. I used to listen to it while I did my homework
What happened to them? They are still rockin out. I just saw them 2 months ago here in Spain. And they were awesome 🤘
Was the singer Crane or Whitfield?
@@metalmike570 is that a trick question? They’re the same person no?
@@thelolguy007 I'm not a big fan, so I guess you just educated me!
THAT CRAP STAIN SINGER NEEDS TO LIGHTEN UP ON HIS DRINKING, AGAIN!!!!!
Extremely underappreciated. Great songwriting and often overlooked due to their party songs. Cloudy skies is a personal favorite. Funky fresh country club is a killer tune.
Their rendition of Harry Chapin's Cat's in the Cradle was simply haunting. Sad song with a message but theirs gave me chills. Love it. Also...broke up with a girl in junior high by requesting and dedicating Hate Everything About You. Rude in hindsight but legendary at the time.
30 years later we still remember the band.
Still watching them live
Nice to see someone admire Bon Scott! Sometimes he's the forgotten man from ACCA DACCA 🇦🇺
I used to get Ugly Kid Joe albums out of the library when i was a kid. Haven't thought about them again until watching this.
One of my all time favorite bands.
Saw them in Vegas back in May. Amazing show. I’ve waited since high school to finally see them and I couldn’t be more happier. Whit’s sister was also at the show, funny you mention her.
Rest in Peace, Moish Brennan
I remember that summer. I bought America's Least Wanted and Jackyl's self titled album on the same day and i wore them out
Two amazing albums!
Still listen to them this day. "Uglier Than They Used ta Be" is an amazing album.
Such a great album!
Stairway to hell!!
Excellent upload! You never fail to entertain and inform Rock n Roll fans like me
Thanks!
I was in LOVE with Crane in the 90s! I still have them on a tape I recorded from the radio 😅. I was pleasantly surprised to learn they were still around last year but!
Their version of Cats In The Craddle still gives me chills.
It might just be the flu coming on
@@dr.loomis4221 That's a good point. Gotta be careful these days.
Menace to Sobriety is in my top 10 records of all time, it's killer!
Same here, my favorite song on that album is Tomorrows World, but it’s solid all the way through
i was a kid when they blew up on mtv. the main thing I remember is it felt like the first time I saw a video with the musicians wearing regular clothes like mine. that was a big deal to me because up until that point any rock video on mtv has dudes in spandex and weird outfits.
Saw these guys this year at The Machine Shop in Flint. They sounded great. Whitfields voice was strong.
I think of them as an awesome 80s/90s rock band 🤘
Can't leave your content on and do anything while listening to this channel the ads you have never stop unless you skip them it's insane
UA-cam places the ads not me
I never saw UKJ live, but I did see Life of Agony with Crane on vocals. He was great.
He should have frontend acdc instead of axle. Mind blown
Loved their 2nd album 'as ugly as they want to be'. Listened to that constantly back and forth.
The EP was the first "album" I ever bought. Funk Fresh Country Club is still such a great song... in fact, I'm going to listen to it now...
they always reminded me of the bank robbers from point break.
My favorite song of theirs is Panhandlin Prince. If you don't know it, go listen to it after this. You'll love it
Great song!
You gotta admit, paying someone in $14 cash and Mountain Dew, a candy bar and a bag of Doritos is the most Rock 'n' Roll thing ever.
LOVE "Everything About You" and their amazing (and surprising) cover of Harry Chapin's "Cat's In The Cradle." Major kudos on your Judas Priest *British Steel* t-shirt!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks! I’ve done a bunch of Judas Priest stories on my channel
Artists (the ones that draw) worked very cheap, and remember it was more than 30 years ago so that was like getting $40 when you add the goodies. 😆
I loved Ugly Kid Joe when I was in middle school, lol. I played the Cat's in the Cradle song for my dad as a kid, to try to inform him of how things were going, and where they would go in the future. He didn't listen. He has a lot of regret now.
In the era they came out, they were as anti whatever they wanted to be. Loved them then love them now. They were a great mark on my childhood and adolescence. Still fun AF to listen to today.
TRIVIA:
UGLY KID JOE's friend Kirk Hammett also helped them to get a record break.
They always thank him on their acknowledgement printed on their album. 🤘😃
Did you know?
Whit, Kirk, and Robert (off & on) have performed in a party style cover band called "The Wedding Band."
There are some quality videos available on UA-cam. Their playlist is quite impressive and wide-ranging. Check it out.
I lean towards both. It was them and Stuck Mojo for me. UKJ was the mainstream (at the time, radio) and Stuck Mojo was like the underground. Love both bands.
Both bands have a link to Brooklyns Life of Agony. Whit sang for Loa and member of stuck mojo were in a band with life of agonys guitarist Joey z. Band was steromud
@@davejanssens3923 so many connections. I still listen to both UKK and Mojo. I just heard the new PRONG. Its amazing... Nice breath of old school with some newish twist...
America's least wanted is a awesome album. Cut my musical chops learning the album. Pan handle Prince is a masterpiece.... ✌️🤘🏴☠️🇦🇺
I met them when I was 5 in an empty angel stadium we just walked up they were doing soundcheck great guys they stopped playing to talk to me asked if I had a pen for them to sign my shirt 👕 I'm 36 now and can't believe how cool they are 31 years later
Menace to Sobriety is an underrated masterpiece.
underrated band. Menace to Sobriety was fucking excellent. Saw them live twice, one in Nottingham Rock City back on the Menace tour, one in Munich at a free show on their revival in 2013.
Clover is a top 10 favorite song of mine. The whole album is so good
They were underrated as all hell.
It's nice to hear they're making new music and touring again. Cordell's a super nice dude. 👍🤘
Yep, he is tha shizzz
Awesome band huge part of my life as a drummer we used to play neighbour and everything about you but madman is my fav song to play
Whitfield Crane used to date the MTV Girl Karen Duffy. She was called The Duff. She was so pretty. Then She had cancer and lost her hair. One time when her hair was growing back she wore an outfit with a hat. That old lady Joan Rivers made fun of her outfit & her hat. So she had to come out & tell everyone She wore the hat b/c she had cancer. She survived and is married with kids. I loved her when I was a kid. She was a great host on MTV.
I'm from Brazil and I love your channel. I would really like to see a video about bands that are or were big in the US but can't or could as well in other countries. It seems like every band's goal is to hit the US, 'cause when you conquer the US, you conquer the world. What happen to bands like Third Eye Blind and Collective Soul? In Brazil we have big Festivals like Rock in Rio and Lollapalooza, can't you tell me why those bands have never been to Brazil for exemple?
You ask a great question my friend. Both those bands are on my to do list, in a few weeks you’ll see one of them on my channel. A guy at work stopped me and asked me “when are you doing this band?”
Whitfield Crane has one of the best voices in rock. Check out the Richrds/Crane collab album. Raw and stripped down acoustic. So good.
I remember getting their EP when Everything About You and was really impressed with it especially Madman..their first full album America's Least Wanted was brilliant
Your t shirt reminded me of Defenders of the Faith back in the 80’s. That was such a great album after screaming for vengeance. At the end of the video I was reminded of Sad Wings of Destiny. That is a masterpiece too
I sang Everything About You at karaoke on Monday. I have a bunch of their songs on my playlists. Love UKJ.
Great video. I went to see UKJ down in Austin in 1992 and the three of us were the only ones that showed up. They played a full set and then hung out with us. Their music video showed up on MTV shortly afterward and when we saw them next, it was standing room only.
Both saw them live plus I had a band as a teenager and we jammed all their shit in our local parties we played.Classic badass band still jam to them till this day
So cool that you brought up that Krist Novoselic quote. Buttholse Surfers reminded me of another artist that Kurt Cobain liked: Steven "Jesse" Bernstein. Could you talk about Jesse on your next video?? :)
Saw them at KKs Steel Mill in Wolverhampton earlier this year and they absolutely rocked it
I really liked their songs and remember jamming to them way back in 1991. 😊
Saw them open for Ozzy in 1992, where their lead singer said F-You to the crowd repeatedly. This was in Seattle, the capital ($$$) of Grunge. Knowing more about their sense of humor now, they were a much-needed breath of flatulence. Love their parodies!
Lived in Tenn in the 90's and drove into Kentucky to see them play. It was a great show. I even hung out with Whit at a bar after just chilling and chatting. He was talking about going to see his mom and his sister. They are all about the music instead of fame & fortune. It's what makes them good even today. I still listen to their stuff and still love it. It's a great combination of rock and humor. Rock on Ugly Kid Joe 🤘🏼
Ugly Kid Joe was amazing! I seen them with ozzy and Motorhead. That was my first concert I was 13.
The old Drummer Mark Davis is from my old town. His Nephew was the singer in my old band, so we got to hang out with those guys back in the day. The only one I knew though was mark. I have a Marshall Cab that used to belong to Klaus. They had some great songs.
They were a one hit wonder as far as mainstream exposure, but they freaking kicked ass if you listened to all their stuff.
Still to this day, one badass band!!!🎸😎
oh damn i didnt know they had godsmack’s drummer at one point! that dude is phenomenal! 🔥
Great band! One of my absolute favorites from the 90’s, I remember picking up the EP in the store when I was like 14 or 15 and seeing the cover and reading the tracklist and buying it out of sheer curiosity. I’ve been a fan ever since.
Another Animal def deserved a shout out
Thanks for this one, great job once again!
Here in the UK they were a one hit wonder group and pretty much considered a novelty act, they still are.
One hit is better than none. Not my favorite band by far, but they were one of those bands that put on a great show. I was surprised how good they were when I saw them in the 90s, having only heard the one song.
I remember "Everything About You" on Headbangers Ball (way back not only when MTV actually played videos, but also played metal - late 80s/early 90s.) Name was a parody of another one called "Pretty Boy Floyd." They were cool.
I had their debut ep on cassette. It was a lot of fun and loved blasting it in my Kenwood stereo in my 84 T-Bird.
I have always been a fan of UKJ and I still listen to their stuff even today. I saw them live when they warmed up for Def Leppard in the 90's.
KBPI!! I grew up in Colorado and moved to Denver when I was 18. Listened to a lot of KBPI haha.
Theirs is my favourite version of Cats in the Cradle, and Jesus rode a Harley was an awesome tune. Loved this band.
Saw them play Bloodstock Festival in the UK in August and they put on a brilliant set.
Reminds me of the “explicit lyrics “ label that was on many CDs back then. The irony is the label just helped sell cds.
UKJ reformed in 2010 and has released 4 albums since and is once again touring, I just saw them play in Fort Meyers Florida this past June
this band got me into metal as a 10 year old. my friend copied his CD onto a cassette and i would play it every day on my walkman.
Their new stuff is awesome
I saw them play last night ,in Breda Holland, they were fantastic.
Love your videos. Can you do a history of Bon Jovi. Always been my favorite band. Thank you for all the work you do. Keep it up.
Saw em in 92 at Spinnakers in Panama City for Spring break. Super cool.
Always liked Ugly Kid Joe. Favorite song is Mr Record Man. Love the solo in that song.
Mr. Record Man is such a good song.
4:31 “They didn’t want to be a flash in the pan”
THATS just hilarious.
Their cover of “cats in the cradle” is awesome. I’ve had that in all my playlists since it came out.
That's Disney for you, no surprise
I love these guys if I find anything new I grab it. Though in Australia we have only had a few runs then best of mixes. They played at Melbourne's iconic venue the goo/metro and where the last to play there. The next day it closed down. I missed out had to work another gig that night though still went there later for a glimmer of hope to find doors closed.😢
Saw them Live in 90s as Ugly kid Joe and in 2005 as 'Medication'...So basically they went on to create yet another Awesome Band! ...Thank You Whitfield ❤
One my all time fav bands
They still making music !!! They just dropped several new records
They're still playing, and killing it
What happened to UKJ was that they arrived too soon in 1991. Hair metal was dying, but it wasn't quite dead yet. Their arrival while that genre was still going caused them to be lumped into it even though their sound was different, and they then died with it. Had they arrived in 93-94 they would've had much more staying power.
Love Ugly Kid Joe genuine good rock music with a twist of humour
Perhaps my favorite underrated band of all time.
Saw them in 2014 in Australia they were awesome 🤘
I used to watch these dudes practice in their storage unit in Isla Vista, and saw them play many times at the local venue The Graduate, where they regularly drew hundreds (and even recall seeing them back when they were called Overdrive). Even back then, I remember thinking that they completely had what it took to "make it." Their early success didn't surprise me at all.
Loved them in the day, saw them in 2015 in Camden where they were fun, self deprecating and played a gret set. Still a fan.
Seem to recall shooting a game of pool with the guitar player in Austin back in the late 1990's one night and chatting about the band for a while. Cool guy.
This band is fantastic. Their cover of "Cats In The Cradle" is better than the original song
That's the version I think about when that song is brought up!
Such a good version by Ugly Kid Joe
Not a Chance
Hell no it's not ...
@@toddrichardson8595the original and the Ugly Kid versions suck
I like Kloes’s band Another Animal. Really good. He still jams with bands all over. Still has a good voice
Busy Bee and Mr Record Man are my favs.
Saw them last may in the uk. Still going strong and putting on a good show
Have a listen to America's Least Wanted and just appreciative the creative rhythm guitar riffs, the amazing emotive guitar solos, the funky bass, complex drumming and the inventive compositions. Crane's voice is awesome. The thing that held them back in my opinion was the one too many cheeseball lyrics. Underrated band that could have developed into something great. Thanks for the video.
They were different that's what made them great in my opinion. They had fun with the music 🍻🍻
When I was a kid, the day I got a chihuahua and to choose the name for the dog. My older brother had in his hand an audio tape of an album of Ugly Kid Joe :"Why not Joe?" Yes we went for it 🐶
Rad wings of Destiny is an awesome record! I saw them back in May and they were amazing!
