@jnicemint By the standards of today he can be called a racist. By the standards of his time he was towards the radical end of non-racism. Passionately anti-slavery and insisting on the biological unity of the human race against the "races as separate species" general idea of the time.

Perhaps if the media payed attention to real issues instead of alsays going on about gender equality, first world country problems, racial balance and so on, we wouldn't have Farage. I'm not against him, he is just a natural product of politics and assosiated media going down the drain and failing to represent the people. I agree! In the 90s it felt like we had diversity, racism was not cool, gays were accepted, the push for equal rights was on an upward trajectory and the moral argument had been won. Britain was feeling good about itself, religion was on the wane, comedy and music were awesome, we had the internet and mobile phones but it hadn't gone mad yet. It was before 9/11, before Islam was the only topic on the news, before burqas were common on the streets and the Berlin Wall had fallen. Identity politics was not yet a thing, university was a balance between grants and student loans making it affordable for a working class girl like me, house prices were rising but so were wages. It wasn't a bad place to be...
I relate to him so much somehow. What happened to what is right, correct and factual whether you like it or not - rather than a war of opinions? Lies are king and it sucks so bad :/
Exactly. By all means defend an ideological point or a policy idea as vigorously as you wish but if discussions arent based on factual reasoning it's just a descent into stupidity and a discussion in Ill faith
@Danny Grant haha, sounds a bit extreme mate. bordering on racist, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Who are these people you're referring to as leaches? whats not great about this country? and why ?
@Danny Grant Blimey Danny, you're certainly not holding back. I understand that you are allowed to do that, to an extent... But, why exactly would you choose to? What have you heard that makes you think you would discriminate against a group of people as a direct result of their skin tone? I'm honestly not sure who determined exactly what racism is but I think its a pretty straight-forward construct. Surely if you acknowledge race (which you did) then you can acknowledge racism which is essentially what you have described (discriminating or subjecting an individual or group of people to prejudice due to the skin tone). Its not a trick question, if you're happy to define people by race then surely racism is a relative concept. What do you mean when you say wanting the same I'm not following there...
Nice clickbate title. JoB wouldn't dare debate anyone on an open platform. His arguments don't stand up to scrutiny. Look at his interview with Jacob Rees Mogg 😂

@Marqohpolo I've listened to that interview. It was a complete car crash. O'Brien huffed and puffed and continuously tried to divert the conversation with ill thought out red herrings that made him look like a fool. You can tell his calls are heavily vetted so only those with the weakest arguments get through. On the rare occasion he gets any resistance, he simply bullies the caller by talking over them and then cutting them off.
Never mind Victoriana, why would anyone want to go back to the UK of the 70's (at or around the time the UK joined the EEC)? Bread strikes, 3-day week, rationed power, oil crisis ... probably not a period to feel nostalgic about, and the immediate precursor of what the UK is walking away from. I assume that going back to pre-EU membership means resetting the clock to that period.

Goes after right leaning news papers, but leaves out the independent and guardian, and he leaves out he’s own vile interview techniques.
Nice clickbate title. JoB wouldn't dare debate anyone on an open platform. His arguments don't stand up to scrutiny. Look at his interview with Jacob Rees Mogg 😂
Yeah I saw that. Mogg was totally out of his depth
"he wouldn't dare debate anyone on an open platform.....listen to his interview with Mogg...." what THAT open platform and debate you mean? please listen to yourself!
Idiot lol
@Marqohpolo
I've listened to that interview.
He made a mug of Mogg.
Is this guy really attempting to take a liberal stance in criticising infringements upon judicial, parliamentary and academic freedom before proceeding to suggest these issues are solved by banning people from social media and forcing people out of running private newspaper companies.
Quite easily if they are complicit on perpetuating disinformation to mislead the public. Democracy in the modern age once relied on an objective reporting of the facts by the press, but when that press is owned or controlled by those be fitting from the disinformation they are putting out, then who benefits? Not Democracy. As for the rest: they are entitled to their opinions, not their own facts.
Play the ball, not the man.
Declan McArdle Your comment is wasted on here pal
Question James obrian how effective do you think you have been?
He's that effective I deleted the lbc app off my tablet and phone. The man's not an interviewer an interviewers job is to ask the question then let the other person answer the question then if needed challenge the person's answer not ask question then dont let the person answer the question by shouting over them prat
usual nonsense waffle whining.. what I've come to expect....
I get the feeling James is still having problems dealing with the democratic decision by the people. Bless him.
It was not democratic. The leave campaign cheated lots of misinformation was spread by them
@@taqiyasir8086 sorry I forgot the leave side said there would be a recession and 800.000 job loses if the vote went the wrong way. No wait that was the honest remain slogans wasn't it? Your a little bit deluded nasir.
franko barressi You are just choosing to deflect blame from legitimate criticism of the leave campaign. And with your recession comments that is a long term prediction, after we leave with no deal on WTO terms due to a lack of FDI and low growth rates, you’re talking like we left 50 years ago and you’ve proved us all wrong. The leave campaign did lie, they lied about the NHS go and read the IFS report on will leaving the EU provide a dividend for the NHS and you will see first hand the lies you were sold and the ‘making a deal with the EU will be the easiest from human history’ well we both know how that’s gone.
franko barressi I’m not arguing the remain side was perfect but far better than the leave
@@owen5908 lies lies and more lies doesn't make you right. Mark Carney, the impartial governor of the bank of England said there would be a punishment recessions immediately after a leave vote. President Obama said we would be back of the cue on trade deals, 85% of elected mps were selected on a manifesto of delivering brexit then done their best to block it. I'm sorry you disagree with the majority of the electorate. But people aren't thick. The decision makers in Brussels haven't even got started with the way they truly want to govern the masses. The way Greeks have been treated isn't a Europe for all, the way Ireland had to vote again on the Lisbon treaty isn't democracy, the way French people's concerns about how a more centralised Europe is affecting their way of life. Youth unemployment in many countries. All these things have been largely unreported because European bureaucrats have suppressed the MSM. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
I don't think he's "smug" - smugness requires you have a tangible track record of achievement to boast about/ be proud of. What has James O'Brien actually done to be smug about? He's written a book - his own opinion on a number of topics. So what? Defining yourself or your position as "right" and the opposite as "wrong/ false" needs to demonstrated, not just claimed. Self-deluded might be a more accurate description.....? Does James believe in a flat-earth, fairies and Father Christmas?
Thanks DUP (house Frey)
He may seem smug but guess what, he’s right. Don’t attack his look, tone or language, try and dispute his actual FACTS!
Andrew Vance
He predicts what will happen the future, there's no "facts" in that.
Saying will be poorer if we leave isn't a fact, it's a assumption.
Robert yes, based on FACTS! His predictions are based on what economists are saying having analyzed the data! He’s simply putting the raw data into context such that everyone can understand it.
Do some research and you’ll see that he’s correct (as much as it pains me as I’m an optimist and genuinely don’t want to believe we’ve made the worst decision of our lifetime based on lies and emotional diatribe)!
There is a reason no one challenges him on the facts and what they mean! 😉
Andrew Vance
There's been many things predicted in the past that would happen in the future based on expert opinion.
It is still just opinions, just from "experts".
There's a saying in the financial industry "past performance is no guarantee of future results"
Fact
Noun, a thing that is known or proved to be true.
Robert ok... FACT: over 20 worldwide multinational organizations are planning on relocating elsewhere in Europe (they’ve admitted its due to Brexit) - taking jobs with them.
FACT: this mess has cost us 3 years of actual politics with crime rates, NHS, education getting worse.
FACT: we were known as the ‘sick man of Europe’ before joining the EU and have since become the 5th strongest economy in the world.
FACT: The head of the WTO admitted that going from EU membership to WTO terms is like self-relegation from premiership to 4th division in football.
FACT: the economic model used by Leave campaign has been disproven.
FACT: many different Brexiteers voted for DIFFERENT things, some actually contradicting one another 😂
FACT: Boris and Gove voted differently to each other in May’s last withdrawal agreement, sums up the strategy when the two chief leaders have different views on it. Just shows that ‘leave doesn’t just mean leave’ other wise they’d agree!
I could go on all day!
Andrew Vance
Fact
Businesses don't have a vote, therefore no say in politics. Individual citizens do, and they voted for brexit.
80% of businesses ready for no deal.
Many remainers voted for different reasons.
Just because you don't like the outcome of the vote, doesn't mean it was wrong. I don't like the outcome of many general elections, doesn't mean we should delay and keep the previous party in power, because businesses like that one. No we still change the government what ever the outcome of the election results were.
One example is one too many James
There is no analysis with O'Brien, merely a string of proclamations laced with epithets, delivered of course in a smug elitist manner. The softball interviewer in this case of course helps things along. O'Brien obviously knows he is a professional propagandist else he would not need to hold up his positions as beyond question, ie. simply right.
Brilliant! O'Brien for PM. More brains than Cameron, Farage, Rees-Mogg, Johnson combined. ... even if that's not saying much.
Horrible little weasel...can't stand him
God, I love this man!
A public schoolboy who uses the word 'mate' more often than an exasparated zookeeper prodding at a panda enclosure.
Not smug, just a knob
The default brexiter argument. "I don't like him because he makes me feel silly".
Don't worry, Reese Mogg has got your back.
The comments say it all. I’ve never spoken to a more odious person, he only simply shouts down and bullies anyone who has a point against him. He only debates in own echo chamber. He lives in a bubble lol
So good to see JoB back on JOE.
James does win most debates he has with callers on his show. The reason for this is that he frames his questions/issues in very narrow terms, they amount to gotcha questions. He also talks over & browbeats his callers while they are trying to make their point. When faced with someone like Jacob Rees Mogg he fell flat on his face.
Nothing in the content from this UA-cam upload has convinced me that my vote to 'Leave' the EU in 2016 was either shameful or wrong.
As a University graduate in both History and Law and a self employed business owner, I put my cross firmly on 'Leave' in 2016 and have now just voted for the Brexit Party with a firm 'X' to deliver on my democratic vote made in 2016. 'Captain Backfire' [James] disgusts my view in relation to democracy. In my view, his ongoing views are socially divisive, anti democratic and anti UK/NI orientated.
You studied History and Law but you cannot understand the EU is democratic and the UK is less democratic. 😂
And your History degree is written on Andrex.
Where you sick on the day for the lecture on electoral law? And btw NI is in the UK.
@@erzan The UK is less democratic being a part of the EU.
Citizens of Europe do not vote for the EU Commission.
@@Dozeyish If you look on your passport, you will not only see a unicorn to represent Scotland, but also the words "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". That's why I abbreviate it to UK/NI. I am quite aware that we are four nations. As to your point on electoral law - elaborate and I'll answer.
LBC need to fire this guy, he is so far left he must walk around in Circles all day, he is the most smug, patronising fool I have ever seen.
Believe me, he is not 'so far left' . Much more of a liberal democrat
Knob
Glad you know who you are.
He wins arguments by pretty much ignoring what everyone else has to say, then he puts the blinkers on and just keeps on going with a smug look on his face. He reminds me of Theresa May.
Why don't you call in and show how clever you are? We dare you. We double dare you.
Barry Evans Do you mean like „free range bananas „.
@@thetoff4290 If I meant free range bananas, I would have said free range bananas. Unless you are demonstrating James' tactics. Mention something the guest has never said, then debunk it? If so, very funny.
father and son?
Lasted 3 minutes, this guy is the reason people voted for Brexit
