A thousand thank yous for the review. Your video and your replies to comments and questions was instrumental in my deciding in favour of the ECM Mechanika V Slim as opposed to other comparable HX machines. For all of you out there comparing options, I had a chance to find a store in my city that retails all four of the above mentioned. I spent a lot of time with each one, turning the valves, flipping switches, holding the portafilters (wow!, just wow), activating the brew lever, feeling the steam and hot water wands, manipulating the drip tray, etc. Everything about the ECM feels so much more substantial. Factor in the larger boiler made of SS, the engineering and repairability and I was even more convinced that this machine is for me. Mine even included a very decent tamper in the box. I have one suggestion that I would like to share with all manufacturers of prosumer stuff like this...Since most include two portafilters, why not make one of them bottomless? That makes even more sense seeing at the spouts are screwed on...just include the single and double spouts and I can decide which one I leave on that portafilter. Thoughts? Anyway, WLL rocks!
Hi MFM, And a thousand thank yous for sharing your opinions! Nothing like hearing from someone like you with hands on time detailing their decision process. I agree with you 100% ECM is the class act of prosumer level machines. Durability, repair ability, quality components and simple reliable engineering stand out in their products compared to other manufacturers. It's refreshing that a few manufacturers are including decent heavy usable tampers with some of their machines now. On portafilters... Love your idea. Honestly I'm surprised single spout PFs are a thing anymore. Nobody I know pulls singles. Maybe it's still a done in other parts of the world but I do not know any baristas or home users who do singles. In the last 10 years I might have done 10. The majority of those to demo a single shot basket engineered to give the same extraction as a companion double without a change in grind size. I'm certain most prosumer machine users would welcome a bottomless portafilter in place of a single spout! You rock a whole latte - thanks and Happy New Year! Marc
@@Wholelattelovepage And a Happy New Year Year to all of you too! Another idea that I am curious to find out if manufacturers have considered... Why not imbed a few thin strips of heat resistant silicone length or cross wise across the cup warming tray between the holes? Something subtle and barely above the surface so the cups sit on that rather than directly on the beautiful mirror finish so as to not scratch it. Another benefit would be that your cups are a little more secured in place and don't slide around when you remove the tray to fill the tank (if you rather not remove them all when you lift it off). Just thought I should share.
Thanks for your review guys - it helped me decide on getting a Mechanika V slim for my home and I'm almost a year with my machine with no regrets. What an amazing machine with a small footprint!
@@jordanurbani5881 Been using a Quamar M80E, and it’s been a decent grinder. But if I had to buy another grinder, I’d get something with a smaller footprint and step less, like a Eureka unit.
Purchased a V Slim after considerable research. Main reasons for choosing were build quality, gorgeous looks, compact size and ability to steam and brew at the same time. Beyond happy with it. It looks stunning and is easy to operate (even for a novice like me and my wife who had no interest in making espresso before I bought it). It is also very consistent which I love, coming from a Sage Barista Pro which seemed never to make the same cup twice. 6 months ago I wouldn’t have dreamed of spending this much money on an espresso machine - since getting it, I haven’t thought twice. Partnered it with the ECM grinder - it looks great, a little inconsistent with the size of the dose despite the timer but I wanted a one button operation grinder that would compliment the ECM. I wouldn’t change my choice if I had it again.
Marc said he was seeing consistent brew temps with the thermocoupled portofilter. I was curious how much rebound time was alotted after the initial flush of overheated water before pulling the shot. Nice review guys. I picked up this machine to replace my original Vetrano. Impressed with the design and servicablilty.
I am so happy I purchased my Prof 500 and T64 grinder from whole latte love. These folks rock especially the coffee I get from them, I'm so addicted to Danesi Gold and Classic as well as Maromas. Keep up the good work guys...
Hi Shih, No you can't as the Mechanika uses a heat exchange boiler which isolates the brewing circuit from the boiler so releasing pressure from the steam generating section does not change brewing pressure or flow rate. But, the Mechanika is available with flow control! With that option you can do low flow rate pre-infusions and many other flow profiles. Check it out here: www.wholelattelove.com/products/ecm-mechanika-v-slim-espresso-machine-with-flow-control Marc
When I watch your videos I ALWAYS imagine this story in which I am one of the last men on earth and I find these videos on a rusty server buried in the ruins of google. I imagine that I am seeing them dressed in rags surrounded by a post-apocalyptic scene in which I fall asleep listening to Marc's voice and thinking about how people lived in the olden days.

I've been debating ECM Mechanika Slim vs Rocket Appartamento... I've now reached my decision and it's the ECM based on the clean look of the internals. OMG that valve tree is a geek's dream. Looking at the connections, everything is shielded, the Pressure Stat with the Static Relay is a winner, also the gauges mounted high on the machine. So much ergo engineering and built-in safety features. Mechanika Slim WINS! After the holidays, I'm getting it from Whole Latte Love, not freaking Amazon or Ebay. #EspressoGoals. Love this channel!
Hi SM, Thanks for the wonderful comment! ECM machines are incredibly well designed. If you have not seen it here's some video from their factory covering their design philosophy: ua-cam.com/video/K0RI5rdz4Ww/v-deo.html Marc
One feature my wife is very concerned with is a timer to have the machine warmed up first thing in the AM. Besides the machines with that feature built-in, or ones with a very short warmup, or getting a new wife, is a solution to put a timer on the power receptacle and turn it on and off there?. Thanks
Hi Jeff, Thanks for the question. Yes, outlet timer is the way to go! They can be used with most any classic espresso machine which has a mechanical power switch like the Mechanika Slim. With a Wifi timer you can turn on/off from just about anywhere! Just be sure the outlet timer is rated to handle the power load. Hope that helps! Marc
Hi Sebastian, The red in the knobs are metal inserts which can be removed if desired. I do not believe we have black replacements with the wording. That does not mean they are not available and I can investigate further if desired. The ECM Classika has a black insert but wording is incorrect for use on the V Slim. Classika is a single boiler machine so wording on the single insert is: "ACQUA VAPORE" as one valve is used for both hot water and steam. Marc
@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks for the quick reply and for investigating. The matching C-Manuale 54 has an optional black grinding scale as seen in the ECM's official website (www.ecm.de/en/products/details/product/Product/Details/c-manuale-54/). I assume this is why the black inserts are shown here: en.wiedemann.coffee/produkt/ecm-mechanika-v-slim-eiche/
Francois Bergevin big boiler for temperature stability and no fade in steam power. Up to temp in 15 minutes although I would suggest a little longer for full stability. This type of machine with mechanical power switch can be run from WiFi power block for remote/automatic on/off so it’s always heated and ready to go when you are.
Hello mark, im a new one to the culture and for now im enjoying my pour over coffee and pretty happy with the chemex, but i like milk drinks very much and im willing to invest no more than 1500$ in a good espresso “machine” and grinder. What do you recommend ? . Thank you 🙏🏻
Hi JPS, Thanks for the question. IMO main choice is between machine with E61 group the Mechanika and Bezzera's BZ group used on the BZ10. You'll have faster heat up times with the BZ group and what some would say is a more classic lever group in the ECM. Both machines are built well. The ECM features excellent finish quality and is available in the "Profi" model which is plumbable direct to waterline and has a rotary pump: www.wholelattelove.com/products/ecm-mechanika-iv-profi-switchable-espresso-machine Marc
@@katiebarr3120 Hello, tbh I had many issues with the Bezerra (broken electrical circuit and heat element) and ultimately I could return and went for a rocket appartemento (quite similar to the ECM). With this I’m super happy :-). So I would go for a rocket or ecm in my opinion the build quality is much better/more premium.
Marc, Todd, thank you so much for this informative review and showing us the inner life of the Slim! I’m wondering, which pressurestat model is actually built in or rather how loud it is and how often would it start to heat up? I plan to arrange the V Slim near to my working space, so that’s why I’m curious about the machine sounds while not brewing, but just in a “stand by “ mode waiting for the next great shot Unfortunately I can’t find any information on that in the www and my local ECM salesman cannot answer on that properly...so I count on you guys;) Best! Great review....but why buy this rather than the pid Profitec Pro 500? Surely the Profitec has more going for it with the addition of a pid. And they are the same price virtually!
Hi John, Thanks for the comment and great question. Some will prefer the PID Pro 500. But why might consider the Slim? PID does give incredible brew temperature stability. And even though the 500 is a heat-exchange machine no cooling flush is required. Flow restrictor in the E61 thermo siphon system is designed to eliminate flushes. But if you want to change brew temp on the 500 it does take some time for everything to equalize to a new temp setting. On the Slim, a cooling flush is typically required. In use one can quickly change brew temp by adjusting the length of the flush prior to an extraction. While the Slim is not PID there are extra details like a larger boiler, narrow design, angled portafilters and exterior accents like the chromed ends on PF handles which match the group lever and the tapered E61 group head. Marc
Hi Guys. Great video. Are the valves on the Slim ‘sprung’ in a similar way to the Profitec ones? If not, what is the disadvantage versus sprung valves? And can you explain the advantages of upgrading the steam tip to 4 or 5 holes from the standard 2 please? Thanks.
Hi Owen, Thanks for the comment and questions. Valves on the Slim are not sprung like those on the Profitec machines. The disadvantage is faster wear of the seals. It's not a big deal unless the user is constantly over tightening the valves which accelerates wear. With a sprung valve, it's a spring which closes the valve and not the turning force of the user. On steam tips... Number of holes is a personal preference. Some users like more holes some like fewer or single hole tips. The big thing with steam tips is balancing steam output with a machine's steam production. Some machines come with tips which are so well balanced that they will never run out of steam - they could steam continuously and never run out of pressure. On a machine like that you could use a steam tip with a larger single hole or more holes and get an initial shot of more pressure that then tails off. Some manufacturers make optional steam tips with more holes. Typically, as more holes are added the individual hole diameter is reduced. Hope that helps! Marc
How hot is the hot water? How much can you pull out at once? Wondering if this can essentially replace an electric kettle for things like tea, preheating water for cooking, and making foods which need hot water.
Hi Chris, Thanks for the question and my apologies for the delayed response. Been offline for a few days. So, Mechanika Slim has a very large 2.2L boiler so hot water for tea etc is no problem. Guessing it can put out at least a liter of near boiling water at a time. Marc
Hi Marc. great review. Do you know whether ECM will also produce a Slim with PID like the Pro 500 or is it possible to upgrade the Slim with PID? Or can it be modded that no cooling flush is required anymore? Thanks, Roman
Hi Roman, Thank you for the comment and question. I was at the ECM/Profitec factory a couple months ago and heard of no plans to make a PID version of the Slim. Could it be modded by the end user? Probably. But there are considerations as far as flow rate of the thermosiphon to the E61. That's controlled by a flow restrictor in the thermosiphon system which takes the engineers a lot of trial and error to get right. Hope that helps! Marc
M F there are lower cost vibration pump HX machines. ECM machines are known for the details in design and quality which add up to reliable, beautiful and capable machines. Beyond that this machine features a very large powerful boiler in an uncommonly small and attractive package.
@MF ECM is the royal Royce of Espresso machine hence the cost. I like there little brother Profitec made from same folks. If I had the extra cash i would go with ECM though for quality Profitec performs excellent.
Very nice machine. Wonder why most of the brands uses painted steel frame instead stainless steel? I understand that money, but there is no way preventing rust from painted steel.
2 questions: a) I bought the Mechanika and it came with a silicone tube that the manual says it is for "water filter", which I have no idea where it goes or what is it's purpose. Is it important? I didn't see it in your review. b) Often I prepare my Cappuccino directly into me paper (disposable) cups, I used to have a old Oscar Simonelli and I had no trouble pulling my shots directly into the paper cup, but wiyh the Mechanika there is no space for that. Is there any solution or idea how can I can keep pulling shots into paper cups? Tks!
Hi AB, Thanks for the question. I believe that tube is for use in the reservoir. One end goes attaches to the water intake nib at bottom of reservoir. Other end of tube connects to a water softener cartridge which sits within the reservoir. There are generic water softener cartidges but I'd suggest something like this as a much better solution for in-tank water treatment: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bwt-bestcup-m-package As for using larger cups... Most cafes will use a shot pitcher for pulling the shots if it's going to end up in a to go cup: www.wholelattelove.com/products/lf-spare-parts-3-spout-2-oz-shot-glass Marc
Hi Marc, are the steam and water valve switches spring loaded like the Profitec Pro 500 etc? Thanks. I ive in New Zealand and I've really appreciated watching and learning from your reviews.

Craig Burton hey bud, that’s what I would have said back in the day “bud” you’re welcome. Pro 500 is an awesome machine among my favorites HX PID machines. Okay, prolly the top. Every time I see a Rocket video I notice that the extraction has some bubbles in it and flows differently than an ECM... would you say it s the portafilter that makes a difference or the ECM pulls better shots ?
Hi VP, Thanks for the question. No PID version of the Slim at this point which I am aware of. We will have staff attending HOST in Milan, Italy this weekend. If there is one coming that's we're we'd hear about it. First PID machine in ECM line using HX boiler is the Technika IV Profi PID: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/semi-automatic-espresso-machines/products/ecm-technika-v-profi-pid If more about espresso and the occasional milk drink there's the single boiler/dual use ECM Classika PID in essentially the same case size as the Slim: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/semi-automatic-espresso-machines/products/ecm-classika-pid Installing a PID in HX boiler machine is tricky engineering due to controlling the thermosiphon flow properly with the boiler running much hotter in HX than a dual boiler PID machine. That said, manufacturers like ECM, Profitec and Rocket Espresso do an excellent job of getting it right in their HX boiler PID machines. Marc
Whole Latte Love Thanks Mark, I usually have 3 espressos and 2 lattes in the morning but it worries me that the classika has more steps to do both and it takes more time. What should I pick?
Is this machine only for people with limited space in their kitchen? I really like the machine, but space is not an issue for me - should I be looking at bigger machines like the Profitec 500?
Hi Nigel, Not just for people with limited space. But, if space not an issue you might consider a machine like the Pro 500 which is a PID machine - Mechanika Slim is not PID. PID has more accurate control of boiler temperature. Marc
Hey there. If I am new and need to learn the ins and outs of espresso, etc. Which machine would you suggest? I want to open my own coffee shop. What is a straight forward machine, easy to use for a beginner?
@@Wholelattelovepage thanks! Following lots more research, including watching your videos, I am now leading towards the Bezzera BZ13. I assume that you would recommend that over both of them? Thanks!
Hi afp, Thanks for the question. I like both machines a lot. The Pro 500 is a PID machine so brew temps are very consistent. Boiler temp in the Mechanika is controlled by a pressurestat so there's more variation in boiler temp and the machine generally requires a short cooling flush just before an extraction. The Pro 500 in most cases does not require the flush. Only reason I'd take this over the 500 is I were steaming extra large amounts of milk. The slim has more steam available. Marc
Whole Latte Love very helpful! I am just making a couple of drinks per day so I am not steaming any large amount. For that reason, you would suggest 500 then, ay?
Does this have a similar thermosiphon restrictor that the Pro 500 PID has? On a similar note, how's the temperature stability of this machine versus the Pro 500 PID? Is a cooling flush required here?
Hi T, Thanks for the question. It does have a flow restrictor. Engineering works out differently than on a the Pro 500 PID. Cooling flush is required on this machine
Much appreciated, thanks for the reply! ECM does indeed do beautiful machines but in this case I might just go for the Pro 500 PID instead (which is the sister company anyway) :)
Hi simon, Thanks for the comment and question. No video yet, but more info here on the Technika V PID: www.wholelattelove.com/products/ecm-technika-v-profi-pid It's a very nice machine, plumbable, rotary pump, HX boiler with PID and excellent ECM engineering and build quality. It's very similar to ECM Synchronika but with HX instead of dual boiler. Marc
@@Wholelattelovepage thanks. I'm currently running an ascaso dual boiler and want to upgrade. Will I really see the difference for the money. Also have you had any issues with baratza sette? Mine has just stopped working twice in four months requiring repairs
Nice review gents. When you say it has a 2.2L boiler does that mean it is always boiling that much water or is the tank more like 1L water and 1L steam? Just trying to get my head around boiling 2L of water to make a a single coffee every morning...😅
Hi s74, The total internal volume is 2.2L. As you guessed it's not entirely full. Some space holds steam. Larger boilers have better temperature stability and contain more steam for better milk frothing. A machine with this size boiler may be overkill if making 1 coffee per day. Marc
Whole Latte Love hi Marc, Im pulling apart the group head so that I can make a general inspection of the inox filter and gigleur. I’ve removed the group cylinder from the e61, but having trouble removing the lower group cylinder from the group cylinder top nut to get access to the filter. Any trick to it or is it just tight? The cylinder unscrews anti clockwise out of the nut?
Hello, So if you had to choose between Rocket Giotto Evoluzione R Rotary Pump Espresso Coffee Machine with Shot Timer & ECM Heidelberg Technika V Profi PID WT-WC. Which one would you suggest?
Hi T, thanks for the question. Personally I prefer the internal and external buile quality opf the Profitec machines. Some are okay with sacrificing that for a little more "flair" in the looks dept. Marc
Hi BV, Thanks for the question. Both are fine machines. The Mechanika Slim is a little more refined in the case work when you look close-up - that's an ECM thing! Some people do prefer the slightly more modern look of Rocket machines compared to more classic styling of ECM. Other things to consider. Larger steam boiler in the Slim than the Appatamento: 74oz vs 60oz. Also more power in heating element in the Slim: 1400w, vs 1200w. Slim has brew and boiler pressure gauges mounted high for easy viewing. Appartamento has a boiler pressure gauge only and it's mounted low. Hope that helps! Marc
I was sold on the Profitec pro 500 pid, but now this new ECM has my thinking. How about a comparison video? You could include a the Rocket Apartmento too. Love the styling of this ECM, I just wish Profitec would improve the looks of their machines and they would easily dominate at this price point.
Hi Funk, Thanks for the comment/request. I would like to do a compare of these machines - it's in the queue! Some basic differences: Pro 500 is of course PID so it has rock solid accurate brew temps without a cooling flush prior to starting an extraction. Without PID HX boiler machines like the Appartamento and ECM Mechanika Slim require a cooling flush prior to an extraction. While the PID gives accurate brew temps, if you change the brew temp it takes 10-15 minutes for the thermal mass of the machine to settle into the new temp. On non-PID HX machines one can quickly adjust brew temps by adjusting the duration of the cooling flush. With those, temp is adjusted more by taste as there's no readout of the brew temp. Appartamento vs. Mechanika Slim: The Slim has that huge boiler in a small package so more steam reserve that the Rocket. I prefer the internal design and extra finish touches on the ECM.
Hi Dan, Thanks for the question. No indication there will be a rotary pump version of this machine. With the slim case design unlikely a rotary pump could fit. The Mechanika IV Profi Switchable does have rotary pump and is plumbable to water line: www.wholelattelove.com/ecm-mechanika-iv-profi-switchable-espresso-machine
Hey Mark, I noticed my extraction starts slow (7 secs from the start of the pump to the first drop of coffee) but finishes fast (25 s). Is this an issue?
Hi JLTS, Thanks for the question. 7 seconds from start of pump is fine - especially on a vibration pump machine which has slower ramp up to brewing pressure. 25 seconds is a bit quick unless you are timing from first drip but not necessarily bad or wrong. Extraction duration is just one measure and helps get you in the ballpark. Color, brew weight ratio of coffee dose to yield and taste are the next level. Check out the naked extractions in this video: ua-cam.com/video/oWBv37o4Q4w/v-deo.html They were delicious! Singles and doubles pulled pump on to pump off about 20 seconds. It was a rotary pump machine and the extraction was left to continue until about 25. Marc

Great review. I just bought one of these. My boiler pressure is usually 1.4 to 1.5, do I need to make an adjustment? (manual says it should be up to 1.25)
Hi Chris, You can run it at that pressure but you may find your brew water is too hot. You can get around that with cooling flushes prior to brewing. Or, you could open up the machine and turn down the pressurstat to run the boiler at lower pressure/temperature.
@@Wholelattelovepage My grinder is a GRAEF CM 900. About the ECM, I love the small package, but at the same time the power that has in it. The steam pressure for the milk is VERY stable, the quality of the coffee that comes out of it is just outstanding. I'm planning to buy a new grinder, but I'm not quite sure which one yet.
Hi Ran, Thanks for the question. If looking for a lower cost machine our favorite is the Gaggia Classic. It's been around for many years and was rated a Consumer's Digest Best Buy. It is a single boiler machine so you can not brew and steam at the same time. But it does have full commercial size 63mm portafilter and large group head for temperature stability. In North American version it has 3-way solenoid valve for dry easy to knock out coffee pucks and comes out of the box with the ability to brew from ESE pods and/or pre-ground coffee using a pressurized filter basket. It includes standard non pressurized basket as well if you have a decent burr grinder. I was just about settled on this machine for purchase when I heard about something called the ECM Mechanika Profi IV I think it's called. Do you think it's worthwhile getting the Profi? It's about an extra $400 or so here in Australia which is no big deal really. I don't think I need a dual boiler with PID just to make a few coffees for my wife and myself and the occasional visitor. .
Hi Ron, Thanks for the question. Yes there is an ECM Mechanika IV Profi: www.wholelattelove.com/products/ecm-mechanika-iv-profi-switchable-espresso-machine It's a plumbable HX machine, larger footprint than the Slim, lever valves instead of knobs, PID so tighter brew temp control and nicer finishing details. If you can swing it - go for it. For your use level I don't think you need a DB machine either. Get the Profi for the rotary pump and plumb it to waterline and never fill a reservoir! Cheers, Marc
Hey Ted, Many do like the joystick levers! It's a bit wider, but if in the US you might check out the Quick Mill Arnos. It's a PID HX with lever operated valves and exterbally adjustable brew pressure (OPV). Here's my colleague AJ with a review video posted last week: ua-cam.com/video/GYdEaLS85Jk/v-deo.html Marc
Hi marc is morgan and mark jackson still part of the team? You should do a video of the whole WLL team! 😀 and i notice WLL youtube account will be 10 years old soon!
It surprises me the quality of your reviews, considering that I am pretty much a rookie almost, you guys are in the business for much more time than me, and skipped a couple things: the profitec machines have the best sound for vibration pumps, that separated black rubber plus white thingies isolate the pump like no other machine. also the whole tube work designed, not touching anything, makes pretty much zero resonance for the machine. Regarding the gauges, the person interested on gauges and brewing quality, will want to look at the cup and gauges at the same time, that's why gauges below is most times actually more comfortable to work with, therefore a better design.
Hi EV, Thanks for your comments! I totally agree!!! We've done videos on many Profitec machines. A constant theme is how much we like their internal design and layout. We love their vibration pump mounts and have pointed them out in videos for some of their other machines. We try to keep our videos to a reasonable length so it's not always possible to cover every part. I do thank you for pointing out some details for this machine. Marc
Sorry, but I strongly disagree. I really hated the fact that all Bezzera machines have their gauges at the bottom, next to the steam wand. Makes it much messier to work with, especially the cleaning process. I was happy to find the gauges at the top of this machine. When you steam your milk, you work with eyes and ears, the gauges are a means of control that is necessary, if you're not happy with the result maybe. The review could have focused a little more on the extras, if it can hold up to the bigger machines of ECM, if there are any specific differences, or maybe too little room to work with freely, etc. Otherwise: This machine is just the one for me, I think, so thanks for the review.
"you get the big ugly one" LMAO. btw Marc, do you think this machine not having a PID is a big step down? I think this machine is better looking than the technika profi. But no PID.
Hi PV, Thanks for the question. Current HX boiler machines with PID are quite good at providing consistent and reliable brew temps. In most cases without doing a pre-extraction cooling flush. Machines without PID usually require a short cooling flush prior to an extraction. For some, that's desirable as one can quickly manipulate brew temp by changing the duration of the cooling flush. With PID, It takes awhile to manipulate brew temps. Marc
After all this years, the Marc & Todd videos are still my favorite by far! Thank you guys.

💯 agree with you!
The slightly awkward chemistry between you two is hilarious. In a good way.
Hi OZ, Thanks for the comment. Lol - Todd is the awkward one - just saying :)

Thanks for your review guys - it helped me decide on getting a Mechanika V slim for my home and I'm almost a year with my machine with no regrets. What an amazing machine with a small footprint!
Hi eCK, You are welcome and thank you for sharing your experience with the ECM Mechnika V Slim.
Marc
I’m considering this too! What kind of grinder are you using? How are you still liking the Mechanika?
Hey Prince, Thanks for sharing your experience!

Marc said he was seeing consistent brew temps with the thermocoupled portofilter. I was curious how much rebound time was alotted after the initial flush of overheated water before pulling the shot. Hi B, Thank you for the kind comment! We will keep the vids coming. Love the Maromas as well!
What a beautiful machine! Great review guys!
Hai Nguyen thanks!
Hi Todd, why do you recommend setting the brew pressure at 10 bar? Ive followed your advice.
Hi TT, If you want 9 bar at the group you have to account for pressure loss in the system - also pressure lost in the group through the coffee.
I am wondering if you're able to do pre-infusion with steam wand without having flow control on ECM mechanika V Slim?
Hi Shih, No you can't as the Mechanika uses a heat exchange boiler which isolates the brewing circuit from the boiler so releasing pressure from the steam generating section does not change brewing pressure or flow rate. But, the Mechanika is available with flow control! With that option you can do low flow rate pre-infusions and many other flow profiles. Check it out here: www.wholelattelove.com/products/ecm-mechanika-v-slim-espresso-machine-with-flow-control

If you have not seen it here's some video from their factory covering their design philosophy: ua-cam.com/video/K0RI5rdz4Ww/v-deo.html

Great machine, a note that the Rocket Appartamento also has a small opening underneath the drip tray for the blind filter.
Hi Dimitris, Thanks for the comment and tip!
I am looking for the smallest semi automatic that will steam and brew at the same time. Is that this one or do you suggest another?

Thanks. I used to be just a normal coffee addict, but now that I'm getting sucked into the Espresso Vortex it’s headed for a new level.
Can I remove the rotary knobs and replace them with joystick paddles?
What’s the advantage of a dual boiler machine vs this? As it seems to be able to steam milk and extract espresso at the same time
DB = not wasting water and be able to set the brew temp.
We can’t wait, until you have these back in stock!
Hi n, Hopefully soon - thinking early September. Darn virus increased demand and slowed down production. Sorry for the delay!
Marc
Hi Mark. Do you offer the optional black rotary knobs for ECM Mechanika V Slim? I prefer the black decor over the red decor.
@@LuckyBuns Any news on the black inserts? Not a fan of the red ones either...
Are there any possible negatives to having a vertical boiler?
Why such a big boiler? How much preheating does it take for the machine to get up to temp?
Francois Bergevin big boiler for temperature stability and no fade in steam power. Up to temp in 15 minutes although I would suggest a little longer for full stability. This type of machine with mechanical power switch can be run from WiFi power block for remote/automatic on/off so it’s always heated and ready to go when you are.
Hello mark, im a new one to the culture and for now im enjoying my pour over coffee and pretty happy with the chemex, but i like milk drinks very much and im willing to invest no more than 1500$ in a good espresso “machine” and grinder. What do you recommend ? . Thank you 🙏🏻
Hello, may I ask which one you prefer this ECM or the Bezerra BZ10 and why? I'm still deciding which one to buy :-)
Hi JPS, Thanks for the question. IMO main choice is between machine with E61 group the Mechanika and Bezzera's BZ group used on the BZ10. You'll have faster heat up times with the BZ group and what some would say is a more classic lever group in the ECM. Both machines are built well. The ECM features excellent finish quality and is available in the "Profi" model which is plumbable direct to waterline and has a rotary pump: www.wholelattelove.com/products/ecm-mechanika-iv-profi-switchable-espresso-machine

Marc
Whole Latte Love thanks Marc. I find all your vids so very informative and helpful to a newbie like me. Cheers
Marc
Great review, but can you plumb it in like the Linea mini?
Hi d, Thanks for the comment and question. The Slim is not plumbable.
Marc
@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks!
Hi Marc. great review.

Isn’t it a little too expensive for a HX with a Vibration Pump?
M F there are lower cost vibration pump HX machines. ECM machines are known for the details in design and quality which add up to reliable, beautiful and capable machines. Beyond that this machine features a very large powerful boiler in an uncommonly small and attractive package.
@MF ECM is the royal Royce of Espresso machine hence the cost. I like there little brother Profitec made from same folks. If I had the extra cash i would go with ECM though for quality Profitec performs excellent.

There are generic water softener cartidges but I'd suggest something like this as a much better solution for in-tank water treatment: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bwt-bestcup-m-package
As for using larger cups...
Most cafes will use a shot pitcher for pulling the shots if it's going to end up in a to go cup: www.wholelattelove.com/products/lf-spare-parts-3-spout-2-oz-shot-glass

Every time I see a Rocket video I notice that the extraction has some bubbles in it and flows differently than an ECM... would you say it s the portafilter that makes a difference or the ECM pulls better shots ?

Hi SSR, Thanks for the question. It's manual stop.
do you understand the E61?
Hi, is there going to be a PID version soon? Is it hard to instal one? Would it be in the front or inside the tray?
Hi VP, Thanks for the question. No PID version of the Slim at this point which I am aware of. We will have staff attending HOST in Milan, Italy this weekend. If there is one coming that's we're we'd hear about it. First PID machine in ECM line using HX boiler is the Technika IV Profi PID: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/semi-automatic-espresso-machines/products/ecm-technika-v-profi-pid
If more about espresso and the occasional milk drink there's the single boiler/dual use ECM Classika PID in essentially the same case size as the Slim: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/semi-automatic-espresso-machines/products/ecm-classika-pid
Installing a PID in HX boiler machine is tricky engineering due to controlling the thermosiphon flow properly with the boiler running much hotter in HX than a dual boiler PID machine.

@@Wholelattelovepage thanks! Following lots more research, including watching your videos, I am now leading towards the Bezzera BZ13. I assume that you would recommend that over both of them? Thanks!
This or the Profitec 500 Pro for lattes?

Me likey! Todd is the latte art master! He never fails!
Hi PF, Thanks for the comment - not bad for a hobbyist!
Would you recommend this over the appartamento?
Marc
Dude, YES!! Get it!!
I'd love to see a show down video between the 500 and the Slim. Thanks for the reply!

NO
where would you put it??
Hey Mark,
I noticed my extraction starts slow (7 secs from the start of the pump to the first drop of coffee) but finishes fast (25 s).

Hi Ron, Thanks for the question. Yes there is an ECM Mechanika IV Profi: www.wholelattelove.com/products/ecm-mechanika-iv-profi-switchable-espresso-machine
It's a plumbable HX machine, larger footprint than the Slim, lever valves instead of knobs, PID so tighter brew temp control and nicer finishing details. If you can swing it - go for it. For your use level I don't think you need a DB machine either. Get the Profi for the rotary pump and plumb it to waterline and never fill a reservoir!
Cheers,
Marc
The Slim is the perfect size but I wish it had levers instead of rotary knobs.
Hey Ted, Many do like the joystick levers! It's a bit wider, but if in the US you might check out the Quick Mill Arnos. It's a PID HX with lever operated valves and exterbally adjustable brew pressure (OPV). Here's my colleague AJ with a review video posted last week: ua-cam.com/video/GYdEaLS85Jk/v-deo.html

Man a PID would make this perfect.
I cant imagine WLL without todd and marcus
Rc Salazar Hi RS, thanks for taking the time to comment!
Marc
Hi marc is morgan and mark jackson still part of the team? You should do a video of the whole WLL team! 😀 and i notice WLL youtube account will be 10 years old soon!
Hi RS, Mark J. is still here. Morgan has moved on :(

Wow
Hey whatever happened to Todd, miss his dry sense of humor...hope he is still thumping.
Hi DL, He's still here and doing videos from time to time!
Marc
There are few things on this Earth more pointless than latte art.
Hey Billy, Thanks for the comment. Presentation gets points with customers and friends. But you are right it's not for everyone.
