- Using the AI-powered Video Enhance AI software I upscaled some clips/shots remastered for the DS9 documentary "What We Left Behind". The documentary remastered it to 1080p and using AI I increased this resolution to 4K. Let me know what you think of the results.
The documentary "What We Left Behind" is an amazing production and I highly recommend you buy it, as you'll see a lot more like this, as well as some really cool behind-the-scenes stuff. You can get the BluRay here: amzn.to/2JCGydv

I would pay money for a 4K remaster of DS9 on disc.
Im fucking fully committed to 5 thousand dollars.
bet you would honey. But then you'd pay $0.01 cent for an ice cream & get upset when they say no.
I would pay two dozen bars of gold pressed latinum to see that
I'll contribute $10k
I wish they’d do a crowdfunding for ds9 and voyager. I’m just a student and don’t have a whole lot of $ but I’d be down for $500 for each series.
DS9 really, even before the upgrade, looked way more movie like than TNG. The lighting wasn't flat, the set design extremely dynamic.. I can see why they set it on a Cardassian station.
nope. i watched some ds9 on netflix. its 480p and it looks terrible and blurry. while TNG is remastared and look sharp and clean on hd.
@@dino-world9911 Uhhh, you're comparing a literally resolution upgrade to lighting, set design, etc. That's not comparable. Compare TNG in 480p to DS9 in 480p and it's pretty obvious which one looks better.
@@dino-world9911 No, he's right. TNG had very standard flat television of the time lighting. DS9 experimented and had a greater dynamic.
Part of it was a change in Directors of Photography. Season 1 and 2 were lit by Marvin Rush while 3-7 were lit by Jonathan West. Jonathan West also lit TNG Season 6 and 7 when Marvin Rush moved from TNG to DS9. VOY and ENT were all lit by Marvin Rush and never really looked that great after being edited on video.
@@danielhenderson8316 This is a very useful comment.
To remaster DS9 to 4K would cost the same as 3-4 episodes of discovery. I know what I'd rather have.
I'd rather have DS9. I hate everything "Star Trek" since the end of DS9.
@@iqbalfaizercomedian4066 Me too :)
@@iqbalfaizercomedian4066 I think voyager and enterprise are good
@@iqbalfaizercomedian4066 hey, enterprise had its moments :/
Real fans who enjoy quality writing would prefer access to both. 😉
Jonathan West did the lighting on DS9. It's A great looking show, especially in later seasons.
All the work that went into the promenade alone justifies putting this in HD. It looks absolutely amazing and like a real location. I love it.
If CBS had actually paid to do this to DS9, it MIGHT just make me pay for CBS All Access once they snatch all the Treks off Netflix.
Bah, they'd just digitally insert Michael Burnham saving everyone and everything in the whole wide universe. PRAISE MIKEY SPOCK!
@@richardgadberry8398 LMFAO Mikey Spock. I'd watch a Morn series before anymore Burnham.
@@Florida8K360 I hear ya. At least Morn has a lot of interesting stories to tell.
chocolate rain
yeah, i would pay a hand for this set of blurays
Damn, that space battle at the end looked insane in 4K; the glow of the warp nacelles, the way the weapons fire lit up the hull of the Defiant, just wow...
@Chris Teet I was blown away how awesome that looked.
So many details uncovered with the extra resolution.
The last short wasnot upscale, for some reason dude added a clip from one of the original VFX artist who re-rendered, re-lit and then compositite everything back together. Its toally different in terms of lighting from the original.
DS9 is the best! It deserves to be fully remastered thank you so much for this!
That shot of DS9 orbiting Bajor looks absolutely stunning and amazing.
Dang Star Trek: Deep Space Nine looks so beautiful in 4K HD in these clips! 😯😍
Man I have to say that CBS really should do a HD remastered/restored version of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and for Star Trek: Voyager since they enough money to produce Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard in movie quality budget. They really would be doing us fans a big service.
I know, right? The pilot for Discovery cost as much as the final two seasons of DS9 combined.
This video's in 1080p nowhere near 4K...
im sure their market annalist have determined it wouldn't be profitable.
DS9 deserves a remastered version.
Amazing, i would watch everything again. I am surprised that 4k makes that much of a difference.
Are you comparing it to DS9 in SD or the What We Left Behind doctumentary in 1080p?
@@CaptRobau The Version i have access to at the moment is the one on Netflix, which is better then the tv versions i remember but still miles away from this 4k stuff.
@@lenoxmcduff8807 this version is not the TV version. This version is something you will never be able to get without the shows negatives. Do not buy this software expecting these results
Well come on, anything over the standard def versions which look like VHS quality would be great.
Wow .. seeing these shots in 4k is mesmerizing. Now I want to rewatch all of DS9 in 4K!
2:40 That Galaxy Class is looking gorgeous
🤤
This would make me part with cash instantly. brilliant work!
Wow. I can't believe how good this is. I wish they would do this to voyager.
Wow...just WOW. Watching this series in this type of state really makes you realize what a difference a remake like this could make.
Tears to my eyes sir Tears to my eyes... To see it in such crispness makes it seem as if it were shot yesterday. You have my gratitude sir~Thanks for triggering my fond memories of watching this show in it's initial run! Fantastic job.
This is absolutely amazing!!! I sat here with my mouth wide open in shock for the full 3 mins not believing what I was seeing. I've followed the community remaster efforts on reddit for awhile, but this... This is the best thing of 2021 so far!
If this is done for all seven seasons and made available on Bluray/4K, I will buy it.
DS9 is my favorite TV show and I got goosebumps watching this! Thanks for sharing.
This.... looks...... AMAZING👍🏻
Thank you. Naturally most of the credit goes to the What We Left Behind team that remastered these scenes to 1080p and widescreen.
This looks amazing I heard they are finally getting to remastering this series. NGL I cant wait to see Pale Moonlight in full HD. Or the Dominion war.
That was beautifully! DS9 was the most dynamic Star Trek series ever.
Just wow! It look like a brand new show! I would love to see all of DS9 in that quality! Please CBS, do it, we all will pay for it!
I agree, unfortunately paramount won't cough up the cash to do it, and kurtzman won't allow it because it will show how inferior STD and picard are
The Shot of the Station at 1:20 really gave me goosebumps (the music helps of course). I hope to see every Star Trek Show in 4k in my lifetime,
100:1 ratio of 'wow' to 'that didn't work'. Well done.
Looks phenomenal and incredibly modern with the 4k treatment....all with zero lens flare, haha
This is beautiful, we need a DS9 Remaster!
Seeing this in 4k makes this show look like a fucking movie . The sets, the costumes the make up were outta this world ..also shows how more serious and beautiful ds9 was from TNG and VY
You've done a timeless show proud. Well done. I would pay for this.
If they did the whole series - people would buy it! I’d happily buy up scaled trek over rather than free new trek on Netflix!
Sadly people didn’t buy the TNG remasters in the numbers to justify the cost, and physical media sales have only dropped more. Plus DS9 meter saw the widespread appeal TNG did.
@@EnigmaticPenguin it really is a shame - no doubt cbs will crack down on people trying to do this stuff purely for the benefit of the fans
This is the best I’ve seen done with footage of the actors. Both actors and background are clear. Not just one or the other. Really good
Paramount should hire this person
Holy shit this looks amazing! CBS should really shell out for the full series remastering but they obviously never will.
It's all because the Blu-Ray TNG boxsets barely shifted any units.
They won't risk making another financial loss.
What they don't appreciate is that DS9 is the best iteration of Trek; characters, world-building, pacing, action and storytelling. An HD remaster would do DS9 more justice than TNG.
@@jolan_tru also if i can see it on netflix in hd, why would i buy the box for my second favourite show? i have the boxset of ds9 in dvd, they're the only dvds in my house lolll
Damn it looks beautiful. CBS needs to remaster this series. Compared to the amount of money they're wasting making mediocre new Star Trek content, this would be almost nothing.
2:44 one of many favorite scenes from DS9. Seeing a Galaxy holding on its own firing its phasers.
Best trek series still hasn’t been remastered. It makes me sad.
Amazing job, and the music fits so well, it actually makes one emotional watching this.
0:38 Bashir with one of those things Schwarzenegger pulled out of his nose in Total Recall 😃. Also this is amazing. Don't really need an excuse to watch DS9 again but this would definitely put some icing on a binge-fest again.
Incredible. This is totally viable tech for a complete remaster
It looks so good, I wanna cry.
to me it`s more notticeable on ships rather than on people
nice job!
The shot at 0:09 with Dukat and Garak is a notable example, as you can see extra details on Dukat's skin and uniform that you wouldn't ordinarily notice.
Ironically it’s the space sequences that will likely prevent them from doing this. The live action shots were shot on film, so no issue there. Where TNG used models in space, DS9 used mostly CGI… at a time when resolutions did not allow for more than 480p ….
Ship and station shots are phenomenal.
Something haunting about the music
The question of what would you do if you were Jeff Beezos has been answered: pay for that
Ah dude that looks amazing.
Ah fuck, this is beautiful. Why doesn't this exist?
Outstanding - thanks for sharing
at first holy shit we getting a remaster, then i read the description 😢
Better than nothing right. Still I suggest you check out the documentary I upscaled this from. There's so much more like this in there, including background stuff, etc.
Beautifully done
Well done!!
I see Capt Sisko has the latest levitating rank pips
So beautiful. Thank you.
Totally breath taking!
All the comments saying they'd pay for a remastered version.. This is one of the only shows where I completely agree with that sentiment
This is amazing.
Wow, I can actually count Jadzia's spots now. I would buy the entire collection again in 2160p.
stunning
Awesome 4k video and music 🎶 😎
Spectacular!!!!
Glad you like it!
I think I need to stop watching the Prime version, and hope that I can find this somewhere. This is incredible!
You can't; it doesn't exist
@@TomalakGeretkal Actually, it does if you know where to look.
omg i need this in my life
Even Pre-Alpha Odo looks great.
alpha?
Beautiful.
Impressive!
Really hope DS9 get's a 4k remaster.. Best ST Series.
this is magnificent.
I almost cried watching this.
Impressive... most impressive
The need to do the entire show like this, I would buy it in an instant. Do The Next Generation, Voyager and Enterprise as well.
This is beautiful
How the fuck did you make me love this show even more?
other than the motion blur its fantastic
The very last scene with the Defiant doing a loop was not upscaled but fully newly rendered.
This gave me BSG vibe
it's in the FRRRACKIN station!!!
Yeah it really looks amazing
2:22 that shot of kira is bad ass
This sombre music playing over shots of DS9 suspended in the dark void of space had a weird effect on me that I was not anticipating.
Heh, this isn't even a comment on the quality of the remaster or upscale...
Just beautiful.
That's how I want to watch DS9 again. And I will definitely pay money for it
Love the music
Well done
WHOA ❤❤❤
If they remastered this show and marketed it, they could instantly gain a huge fanbase of old returning fans and new fans who've never seen anything as sweepingly epic as DS9. We know why they won't do that though.
extraordinary technology!
The music had me. Exiled kingdoms sounds
DS9....Best of the star trek series.
Very cool.
iNCREDIBLE
2:36 the hull plating on the Defiant in 4k Amazing
More DS9!!
The original copyright design for the Deep Space 9 was registered by David J Ward and no other on July 13 1984
Too bad there isn’t a finish remaster product yet, this video is 2 years old when writing this comment and still noting.
Thanks for the work. I think AI upscaling (DVD to HD) works decently on slow moving scenes. But it falls apart with fast moving CGI space battles. CBS really need to remaster DS9 and Voyager to complete all of Star Trek being in high definition. Maybe put it on CBS All Access or something.
Actually, I for one am positively surprised with how well the upscaling works in space battles. I have no idea if there is any touching up being done beyond the upscaling, because I never noticed the distinct colored reflections on the ships hulls of nearby hulls. Something that holds up less well with the upscale is the one orbital shot of Bajor, but fuzzy planets is just something they could regularly get away with at the time.
Also it looks better than Discoveries space battles by a fucking mile just due to cinematography alone.
@@builder396 The space battles were effectively re-rendered in 1080p using new textures so the 4K upscaling is based on a cleaner source. There's a UA-cam video of the Sacrifice of Angels scene comparing up-rezzed 1080p from the original and the new 1080p rendering, you can really see how low res the original models and textures were.
@@builder396 Apparently some of the people who worked on the CGI for the show had access to some of the scenes still on old backups so they were able to render them again with more modern techniques and machines. It goes to show how well done a lot of the model and texture work was back then, it's the lighting simulation that really let it down given how computationally demanding it is to do such things. Unfortunately I don't think anybody has access to the full catalogue of scenes and some have simply been lost to the annals of time so they'd have to redo some from scratch. I don't think CBS want to spend that money sadly nor do they seem to care that much for fans to do it for free for whatever reason.
Huh? The space battles look amazing, what are you even talking about? They're crisp af.
@@PookaBot - As several commenters have said already before you, that's not the official DVD footage used for the space ship scenes. He sampled a different unofficial source to make this video. This unofficial source remade a few short clips in HD. They look good, but they aren't what is on the official DVD that you can buy in the store.
That is impressive. Was not aware technology was already so far.
It isn't
So good well done! Could you do the odyssey battle?
True fans watch DS9 as it was intended, in 244i. Just kidding, this is great.
Cardassians look amazing in HD
i would rather watch this than another season of Picard
