    On my 1995 Nissan D21 Hardbody with an KA24E engine it has a 2 wire plug to the EGR control solenoid valve, 1 wire is 12 volt the other is 5 volt signal, if the solenoid is faulty does it produce a check engine light (CEL)? Does the 5 volt wire need a returning voltage signal from the 12 volt wire in order not to tell the ECU there is an issue? Previous owner did an EGR delete including removing the solenoid and all that remains is the plug, I am told adding a 10 OHM resistor that steps down the 12v to 5 volt will stop the CEL. Suggestions? thanks.

      I think it will be a 12 volt feed and a pulse width modulated ground, making it look like 5 volts. It's just switching on and off for the multimeter to keep up. If you snap open the throttle you may see it change to nearer 0 volts. You can see it better on a scope or if you have Hz on the multi meter you could see that change.
      The 10 ohm resistor will let the ECU know ( or think ) that the EGR is plugged in. Although the EGR being plugged in should do the same thing.

    My engine light just came on in my 2010 focus my we code is saying itss this.. Is this serious or not and how much roughly should I be paying for fix

      If the egr valve is stuck open it will run badly, due to exhaust going into the intake. if it's stuck closed it may well run ok, due to only air/fuel going into the intake. unless it decides to go into limp home mode and gives you reduced power. Either way you would probably want to take care of it to fix that check engine light. Easy enough to remove and replace. May be worth testing before replacing. Cheers Matt

    So the valve operation is either fully closed or fully open? Why does it have a variable potentiometer to monitor pintle position? Why not just a on/off switch?
    I think the valve "solenoid" is actually a stepper motor...adjusting valve to various positions. If this is so...the motor control voltage would also have reversing polarity coming from the ECM.

    • @mechanicmatt871
      @mechanicmatt871  Рік тому +1

      It's not a stepper motor, in this case it is a solenoid (electro magnet) with a power and a ground.
      By pulsing one of the wires on and off very quickly, it can slightly open the valve.
      By varying the pulse width, it will open or close the valve a little more.

    Thank you, it’s important to test valves like this by getting it to work under current to actually see & hear whether it’s working. A couple of years ago I fixed a MAF sensor issue by replacing a faulty wire harness, which I’m about to do for my EGR valve in light of frequent P1406 codes. Do you find that a faulty wire harness is a common issue with the pintle position code?

    • @mechanicmatt871
      @mechanicmatt871  Рік тому

      Hi if you have the egr position voltage on your live data, you could go the the sensor's signal wire and pull the voltage up or down with a test light connected to battery positive or negative. If you don't see any change on the scan tool, it's probably a faulty wire. Thanks for watching

    I take it the valve position is duty cycle/pwm controlled via ground side switching...Did this vehicle have a EGR Low Flow DTC Matt ?

    • @mechanicmatt871
      @mechanicmatt871  5 років тому +1

      Yes it is pwm on the ground side, there was no fault code, it was only checked because the customer had been told it may be faulty. He was happy to see how he gets on with it. Thanks for watching.

    hi i have a 2009 ford fiesta 1.6 tdci,i was driving it last week with no problems,then out of the blue a cog light came on which i have been told is the pcm light,the car died and wouldnt start for around 5 mins,eventually got it running and got it home,a friend plugged it in and a p0698 code came up,he said it was throttle pedal,so replaced that also put a new fuel filter after a day or 2 same thing happend,it wouldnt start so i put a forscan on it turned the pcm light off and it started,after 2 hours cut out again so i unplugged egr and it run fine for 2 days then the light came on again even with the egr unplugged,it has no problem starting but once that pcm light comes on the car will not start until i plug forscan into it and clear the p0698 code,is there anyone out there who can help it says sensor reference voltage c circuit low additional fault symptom circuit voltage below threshold......thanks in advance,jon

    Mine has a module but it says vref and vpwr and that is a module with 6 pins dpef sensor maf and egr solenoid. What is vpwr and vref in that case

    • @mechanicmatt871
      @mechanicmatt871  4 роки тому

      I would think vref is a five vault reference for the position sensor, and vpwr is a twelve volt power supply for the motor or solenoid, if it has a ground side control for the motor.
      I would back probe all wires with the ignition on and see if it helps make sense of it, then check with the engine running.

    Can I ask how to test a 2 wire zafira egr valve please

    • @mechanicmatt871
      @mechanicmatt871  3 роки тому +3

      When it has only 2 wires you can test by carrying out a resistance check across the EGR with the plug disconnected, or preferably check for power and ground at the EGR wires, find out which wire is which and energise the valve and listen for it to operate, or energise while it's running and listen for a change in the engine sound, you could also see a change in the mass air flow if you are looking at live data. The MAF will reduce while the EGR is open.

    Hi, will those readings be the same if it is unhooked from the egr?

    • @mechanicmatt871
      @mechanicmatt871  4 роки тому

      Yes although the centre wire for the egr position signal may show five volts or zero volts unplugged and not the 0.4 that I think it was showing here.
      You can still activate the out side two wires with a power and ground briefly and see the egr valve open when it is off the car.
      Usually the motor wires are thicker than the position sensor's three wires.
