  • How to get amazing footage with the DJI Avata by using colour grading in Adobe Premiere pro. I also use this technique for colour grading DJI Mini 3 Pro footage.

    Fantastic tutorial!
If you’re reading this and have been filming with the NORMAL color mode on. Treat yourself and start capturing in D-CINELIKE or D-LOG.
Color grading is the way. You’ll never go back. 🔺

This has been the most informative educational video on color grading that I've seen. Thank you!!!

    Thanks Stephen ! Helps a lot !
It basically works for the grading of the Avata FPV (or even other FPVs) because you have "sky", "ground" & "focus area" during normal [cinematic type] flights 😀
Thanks for sharing the quick tip - will certainly apply to my next FPV footage [once I stop flying into the ground 🤣]

Thanks! Yeah if the amount of sky changes you can animated the sky mask to match the shape of the sky. But wanted to keep this video short

That first opening cinematic view with birds flying could be the shot of the year by National Geographic or an opening scene from Stephen King movies, no joke! I am a big fan of your footage and my GoPro have the exact same settings as yours! I will say that the new Insta 360 fish eye is a bit weird or at least that's my opinion. I tend to lean toward cinematic wide screen footage that open your eyes to new possibilities, instead of fishy and bubbly look; but that's just a personal preference. Great tutorial! I'm learning Final Cut Pro and the settings are a bit different but the principal should be the same! Following...

Thanks John! Did you buy the new Insta360 X3? Reframed 360 footage definitely has it's own look and I like it for certain things although it doesn't always fit into certain types of video.

Hello, I wanted to ask you a question, I have avata, the images on the premiere are clearly visible, only when I export the images are unfortunately degraded, could you tell me which export parameters are used with dji avata?

Stephen, would a colour passport checker be useful for video in Premier Pro? Or is there to many variations when flying a drone? Only started using Pp so all very new. Great video though 👍

Never used one personally. They are used for matching colours between cameras, but it doesn't matter so much when going from ground level to drone as colours often look different from above anyway. Thanks!

I'm a bit disappointed Stephen. Since your sit down chat what's next' video where you told us all you're gonna make more outdoor vids and less running vids, you've made 13 vids including shorts and only 1 of them is a wild camping video. The rest are running/tech videos. If you never told us you were gonna make more "outdoor videos and less running videos" then this wouldn't be a problem. I feel like you've tricked/lied to us!?! It's your channel and you do what you want with it but why tell us you're gonna make more outdoor vids and less running and tech vids but then make more running and tech vids and less outdoor vids? I'm confused...

Hi Gaz. Straightforward question, very complicated answer. Hope you have time to read it!
Might actually post this on the community page as maybe others are wondering the same thing.
It has only been 4 weeks since that video by the way. A lot of my videos are planned and shot weeks in advance so it takes a while to implement new plans. So to be honest it feels a bit soon to be implying I tricked or lied to anyone, but I guess if that's how you feel, then that's how you feel and I don't hold it against you.
      Moving on:
More non-running outdoors videos are planned btw and it'll be easier now mountain running season is over. Looking forward to dark nights around a campfire deep in a forest or on summits watching the stars.
I've had a set back which made it very difficult to make more outdoors videos recently, I'll get to those in a second. Although I count the two recent running videos as falling into my planned outdoors content by the way. I specifically said "running isn't going away" but what I did say was that running videos should have a purpose.
The two recent running videos were both what I would call "adventure races". Long days, beautiful scenery, lots of chat and banter on the way around. I've no intention of stopping those kinds of video. I will however not be making lots more generic running around the Mournes videos. Running is an excuse to explore and have an adventure in new places.
With regards to more wild camping videos specifically, my hope is to do at least 2 a month. Certain times of the year it will be more, other times less. Each wild camping video requires me to take 2 days off work and takes about 2 days to edit. So they are the most time consuming of the videos I make.
Also if I want to make them outside Ireland, there's quite a bit of travel cost. Again to connect to running, that recent wild camping video wouldn't have happened if not for the running video. I had a sponsor for the running video that covered a big chunk of my travel costs. I was also over in Scotland doing a lot of networking with outdoors brands and people, made some good connections.
A huge set back I had this year was my commercial work was HUGELY down over the summer. Effectively a 75% pay cut for 5 months, to be entirely honest.
This has made it more important than ever (as I said in the update video) that I'm able to make money from UA-cam. I can't afford for it just to keep being a financial drain especially when it distracts from building my commercial filmmaking work.
I hate to make it seem like this is all about money, but the fact is I can't keep doing UA-cam to the standard I want to do it and not have it at least cover its costs.
Despite approaching a number of outdoors brands and businesses, I haven't yet been able to get any sponsorship deals with them or work with them. From speaking to other larger outdoors channels, it seems very few do in general.
I do have a few potentials with a couple of outdoors brands in the works, but it's looking like it'll be next spring before any of them happen.
I do make some money from my channel members (very grateful for them btw!), advertising revenue and affiliate sales. It definitely helps a lot but it doesn't come close to covering what I spend or the time.
On the other hand I've been offered several decent sponsored content deals from tech and other types of brands.
As I said in my update video, I'm not stopping making tech videos, but that they are not my main focus or goal.
But it does look like really I need to use the tech content to fund the outdoors content. But my approach with any tech videos is to always connect them to the outdoors.
My hope is to also find a decent ratio with this. I definitely don't want to be making 50%/50% tech and outdoors, maybe 25%/75%
Anyway hope this goes some way to answering the question 🙂
But one final thing is that nothing is ever guaranteed and I see my plans as just that, plans, they are not promises and sometimes plans don't work out and you have to change tack.

@@StephenJReid I understand, I didn't mean to upset you in any way and I'm sorry if I did...
But, I almost unsubbed when this video popped up in my notifications because it was another running vid but because I enjoy your wild camping and outdoor adventure videos (I don't watch the running ones or the tech as I'm not interested in them) I decided to stay and just watch those videos when they pop up.

@@GrizzlyGaz Thanks Gaz. I think this actually highlights a problem with UA-cam in general. That it doesn’t cope well with multi-niche/topic channels.
It would be great if it was possible to subscribe to playlists as well as the channel. That way you could just select the topics you are interested in and then only get those videos.
Thanks for sticking around. Hopefully making a camping video on Monday/Tuesday night. 🙂

@@StephenJReid I know how much effort goes into the wild camping vids as I make them myself. 1day & 1 night filming then 2 days editing just to make a 20min video!!! 🤣🤣🤣 It's hard work I get it and I honestly wasn't trying to upset you.
