    I created some cute art on some whitewashed wooden door hangars I bought at Hobby Lobby, using the Inktense pencils. Once they’re activated with water, then dry, the ink is permanent and lightfast. So perfect for a artsy or monogrammed wood project. They also work on fabric!

      And if you need to move the pigment around a bit after is dried, you can use something alcohol based, or even just alcohol, and they'll reactivate just like watercolor, but dry back down to permanent ink.
      Inktense are the only watercolor type pencils I've ever used besides my water soluble graphite pencils, and probably the only ones I ever will, I'm spoiled now 😂

    Tip: save the pigment you get after sharpening your pencils. Remove the wood pieces, put that pigment on a palette, add water and dissolve it. You get the pigment ready to use on paper.

      I also save the pigment shavings of Prismacolor pencils, or the broken leads ( so common with the premier soft cores), with a bit of thinner you can create something similar to “liquid pencil”.

      Done that, and you're right. I have a set of waterbrushes filled with that shaving solution (mixed colors, turn out kinda taupe/sepia tinted). Didn't bother to remove the wood, just soaked it all in water and strained the mixture to remove the shaving residue.

    I always use a light blue watercolor pencil for the outline drawing for watercolor + watercolor pencil drawings. This color doesn't mix with the colors you use later on and the outlines "disappear" as soon as you paint over them... mistakes are no big deal, because they also disappear in the painting

    I've never had an art class. I started my art journey with a #2 pencil and a fine point pen. I doodled on everything at every opportunity for literally years. Abot six years ago I decided I wanted to add color. I tried colored pencils first, but they are so waxy and not at all easy to blend like graphite. I didn't enjoy any of the brands I tried. So, I tried oil pastels. They were about as easy to blend as color crayons. I detested them. So, I tried dry pastels, and I loved how I could move, blend, and shade with them as if they were graphite, but they didn't cling to the paper and faded without treating them with a fixative. Then, I tried Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer watercolor pencils, and I find them perfect! They are dry enough to draw, blend, and shade when dry, not waxy or oily at all, and I can paint with them wet on wet, wet on dry straight from the pencil or applying them to a paper pallet first. I am now learning about watercolor paints, (I bought cmyk+ white in Renesans tubes then blende them into a rainbow of colors. Having so much fun learning the flowing, blooming beauty from you. I am looking forward to combining all the things I have learned into some mixed media.

    ❤😊I’m a Pen & Ink artist and love 💓drawing with black ink on white, smooth Bristol paper. One client asked if I would do a watercolor wash over the drawing and she loved it and so did I. But I didn’t like using the colored pencils and I didn’t want to invest in expensive watercolor paints as I didn’t know anything about them. Then Derwent Inktense was brought to my attention! 🥰😍It was love at first use! I, also, purchased the Inktense blocks and use the Caran d’ Ache palette to help create liquid ink. I, also, prefer the Caran d’ Ache neocolor ii’s to watercolor. I’ll be checking out your other videos for your wonderful tips and tricks! Thank you, 💐 Fran Have a fabulous weekend!

    Caren d'ache makes a board for their neocolor 2 that is designed so you can rub it on and activate with water then pick up the colour and use it like regular watercolour. These boards work just as well on any watercolour pencils and allows you to use the colour with the same freedom as regular paints. I highly recommend this if you want watercolour pencils to have the same beautiful brush strokes and blending as paints.

    Just a friendly FYI, Inktense are NOT ink based.... nor are they " dried ink ".
    Straight from Derwents website. There is an entire section about these pencils, and they are technically watercolor pencils, made exactly like all the other water pencils.
    They are made of the same exact pigments that they use in ALL of Derwents colored pencils and watercolor pencils, pastel pencils... etc etc. " Derwent Inktense pencils are watercolor pencils with a unique binder that allows the pigment to behave, and act like INK. The are INK LIKE with our unique binder, revolutionizing our watercolor pencils "
    Hope this clears up this myth/rumor that they are " ink based " pencils. OOOO5h and they are lighfast too, well... some are, and some colors aren't... just like every colored pencil/ watercolor pencil set. That is another rumor that they aren't lighfast because they " are made of/with non-lightfast ink " ... i know exactly whom got this making its round on here , but I'll remain silent on that part lol. Hope this clears up these bad rumors! and for any doubters... go to Derwents website, click on the Inktense, scroll down and it's all there! Have a good one 👍 😊

    I think it depends on the kind of art one is trying to create. I love my Inktense pencils. I have nearly filled a 3 x 5 Paul Reubens 100% cotton hot press sketchbook with studies of sea creatures. I haven't found the pencils limiting at all. I have a shark that I must have done 5 or 6 layers of color on and he's amazing! One of the best things about the Inktense is that the color is permanent. You cannot lift it if you decide to add regular watercolor on top. I love to use ink on top of the dry painting and then a little bit of regular color pencil to boost highlights and shadows. I could use the Inktense for that, but I enjoy using regular color pencil. Do what makes you happy is my motto.

Personaly, I only tried regular watercolor pencils, so I don't know if I will prefer these or the inktense (yet) but I know I loved water soluble pencils way more than oil based pencils (even thouth I will still use and have more experience with the permanent ones). So for me it's the contrary 😅

    My favorite thing about the inktense is how vibrant you can get the colors to be. That and with very thin layers you can build up the most amazing highlights or shadows without having to worry about it lifting on later layers. I tend to use the blocks more than the pencils. (like watercolor pans) but recently got the studio set which I'm leaning towards more. Very fun project. 😁

    • @KristyRice

      Oh man now I need the blocks!!

    • @alexehrhardt1104
      @alexehrhardt1104 2 роки тому

      Using blocks of inktense is one of my goals to try! I think I’d love the shapes and textures I’d get with them, like pastel sticks, but bearable to use! (I love the shapes and textures of chalk pastels, but I HATE the feeling of chalk pastel, like nails on chalkboard for me… *shudder*.) I’m currently trying some pan pastel as a new art medium for fun in between my watercolors and ink drawings and all of the other random things I play with! They are fun, but learning them isn’t very easy. You get some really cool textures with the tools with those, it’s like charcoal or pastel but without the feeling.
      I also have Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils that are fun to play around with, I wish I had more colors, because I love bringing them on outdoor outings to sketch with with only bringing a water brush with me. Sometimes it’s easier to get the look I want with the pencils than with my regular watercolors. I’ve been wanting to try the inktense pencils too, since they’re permanent when dry…could lead to some interesting play.

    Oh, I LOVE these! They weren't the first watercolor pencils I played with, but they've become my favorite. I accidentally bought one, Paynes Grey, thinking it was Coloursoft, with a different body color. When I used it the first time, I thought, "Oh, this feels like a Sennelier pastel." After all, it's soft, buttery, and the color is so easy to lay down. A week later, I was flipping through UA-cams looking for Derwent - and learned the truth about my favorite color pencil. Correction: WATERcolor pencil. I tried it with water, and I danced and giggled and called up my best friend to tell her about it. I'm not going back to other brands if I don't have to.

Both scarlet and French ultramarine would be new. I suppose if they gave us more yellows and oranges, a few more pinks, browns and neutrals 120 would be awsome. It may be the quality of your watercolour pencils which is giving you trouble. Faber castell Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils are wonderful. I also love my intense. Cheap ones are a waste of money, in my opinion. They are like cheap watercolour paints, ok-ish for basic or practise artwork, but dont blend or dissolve well.

    Thanks for the nice video, I have only a bunch of cheap watercolor pencil, they were my intro into real watercolor and following your instruction I even created with them a featherlike object. 🙂 I live in Germany and watched a video, where a lady used watercolor pencil to fake granulation. She rubbed them on a piece of sandpaper onto a wet surface and one can use a knive as well and gently scratch the tip of the pencil. You get the perfect granulation, neither Schmincke nor Daniel Smith watercolors achieve. No need of buying them😉, a little bit kidding.

    Thank you for the demo. I have tried quality brand watercolor pencils and always end up disappointed and wondering why anyone bothers with them. Im not a fan of colored pencils either, so maybe thats why. I was eager to see how you used the Inktense. I still dont get it. You did beautiful lines with the liner brush! Also, if you havent tried Daniel Smiths Watercolor Sticks, please do! You can use them to add intense pigment by using it as a pencil/crayon or dab them with your paint brush, or cut a piece off to place in your palette. Im sure there are more ways…and you get a ton of paint in the stick for the price. Portability is added bonus. Thanks again.

    It's worth trying different papers. Some don't leave those lines on. It's useful to have a textured chopping board as a palette to make bigger washes or mix colours. Inktense are also great as an underpainting, giving you a layer that wont mix or lift.

    I am an intermediate mixed media hobbyist who bought Inktense when I was a beginner. At the time I could never figure out how to use them because I felt like they did not work enough like a pencil or a watercolor to get my project to look like I wanted,(blending out, dear me that was a disaster at first). So they sit on my shelf. Four years later I have progressed so I will have to try them again. I am confused with your segment with the fine liner brush. Did you dip that in watercolor or inktense? I like the inktense pans better, I think its just because my mind is already set that they are going to have a limited wet on wet time instead of trying to use a pencil. I use both colored and pastel pencils (which can be activated with watercolor for simple effects) with a passion and often tint or tone with watercolor (but always from a pan, not a pencil).

I would love the look of regular watercolors with the control of pencils. They say you need 10.000 hours to learn a new skill...I feel I've tried 10.000 years already =( I just suck!!

      I'm almost 70... a beginner with watercolor... at first I played with watercolors on paper and was fascinated by the watercolors & how they seem to move by their own minds... I have a desire for it to look a certain way - and swoosh --- there it goes, doing its own thing HA!!! BUT, after a few attempts at flowers 💐 and seascapes (just blending blues and greens) things started going wonky!!! I couldn't duplicate the same flower again!!! So yes, I became a watcher... Kristy has a great way to entice you to try again - & again. So, wherever your adventures lead, I pray for encouragement! I watch someone ... not into watercolor... but she is so uplifting... love her too. Keep the positives in your world! With love, from a California Gramma ❤️

I love the control they give and how easy I find it is to blend the colors.Granted it is "different strokes for different folks" The only drawback I have with them is that the colors aren't labeled like acrylic colors i.e. Mars black, titanium white ect. Why are you not supposed to dip watercolor pencils in water?

    • @KristyRice
      @KristyRice  2 роки тому +1

      I think the moisture can creep back up the “lead” and deep into the wood

    • @clairemoore2753
      @clairemoore2753 2 роки тому +2

      if the wood gets soaked it can expand and split (cabinet maker here) but I wouldnt think a quick dip in water right on the tip and then being allowed to dry in the air would be an issue. I wouldnt dry them in bright sunlight though, as quick contraction could also be an issue.
