      Man, this is my favorite Solomon Kane story, along with Red Shadows. While Red Shadows is a near perfect introduction into Solomon Kane, as well as showing his moral code by his unyielding chase of a criminal to avenge the life of someone he didn't know simply due to his sense of justice, Wings in the Night is another beast altogether.
      By the time of this story, Kane had already gone through character development and grew to accept and understand that magic was not inherently evil due to his multiple adventures with N'longa, this one shows him actually theorizing a possible origin to the harpies by connecting it with Greek Mythology, showing an understanding of other beliefs most 'fanatics' would condemn. But what really sells this story is how it embodies the rage of Solomon Kane and the anger he possesses towards what he sees as a pitiless and vile universe, even becoming a force of vengeance more vicious and brutal than his foes. However, in the end, he still retains his faith in God and believes that, even as evil ravages the land, it too will die. The final act is just freaking badass, and I love it.

    Being of Devonian stock, it not only sends ripples of joy through me to know Solomon Kane is a fellow Devonian (From Axmouth if I'm not mistaken), but to also hear that Sir Francis Drake himself call Kane "Devon's King of Swords" just makes it all the more awe inspiring.

    This was truly fantastic!
    The production value and the storytelling is peek as always!
    This gets nasty and rather more gruesome than I expected.
    The batmen come off as legitimately horrifying considering how pulpy the concept sounds at first glance.
    The world building is actually really well described and surprisingly not at all as stereotypical as one would expect. The villagers are written as people and the entire conflict between them and the batmen is really fucked up. It all feels so fleshy and human. LOVED IT!

      cant forget the touching moments of Solomon talking to the dead head Goru...
      "There you shall bide," said Solomon Kane to the head of Goru. "The sun will wither you and the cold dews of night will shrivel you. But I will keep the kites from you and your eyes shall see the fall of your slayers. Aye, I could not save the people of Bogonda, but by the God of my race, I can avenge them. Man is the sport and sustenance of titanic beings of Night and Horror whose giant wings hover ever above him. But even evil things may come to an end-and watch ye, Goru."

    Such great work, I love the “not even Solomon Kane could win in a pitched battle against an entire tribe.” line. He totally did already and will again, just wait till he’s ready to let that wolf run free. I love it, these stories are not for everyone and I see them being problematic these days but regardless they never get old. Not even after 35 or so years, they still make me believe in hero’s and the ability of humans to do anything to survive and/or help the people they care for.

  • @nielsebbesen7821
    @nielsebbesen7821 Рік тому +3

    Howard really handles the world building well in this story - The Akaana are just there, and all we learn about it, is what Solomon Kane learns about them from people he interacts with, and then a bit conjecture based off of a story he has heard. There's no convenient miles long carvings or clay tablets, which Solomon just so happens to be able to read, which gives their whole story. They also feel as if they have a history and a trajectory of their own independent of Solomon Kane - They aren't just a static horror, just waiting for him to come along. It is much the same with the Bogondi- They too came from somewhere in the relatively recent past, and it's only through circumstances beyond their control that they are forced to remain where they are. Add to this, the recent history, making it clear that the current and intolerable conditions are in fact very recent.
