America has royalty, people for whom the normal rules do not necessarily apply.

The defense had already settled on leaving the scene of an accident. Which required no cross examination. Only a statement of Kennedy when admitting guilt...guilt on Leaving the scene of an accident. Had they proven the truth, THROUGH the autopsy, that MJK suffocated, it would prove he abandoned her alive, didn't render aid that caused the death, and a more serious charge of manslaughter would be viable.
The crazy part...he wasn't even in the car when it left the bridge. The doors to the Oldsmobile were locked, windows up and there was no means in which a man his size could have exited.
So, all he had to say was THE TRUTH; he got out of the car shortly after the sheriff spotted them together. He hurriedly made it to the opposite side of the island, to put as much distance between he and MJK-for an alibi avoiding the appearance of impropriety. He would swim back to Edgartown in his evening clothes, to his hotel for the night. The last he saw MJK was she was driving at a high rate of speed to allude the sheriff who has spotted them parked on a dirt road. He had no idea she plunged the Oldsmobile off the bridge.
BUT IT WAS TOO LATE. The sheriff's delay in the press conference allowed the attorney enough time to come up with leaving the scene defense. But to prove it, he needed TK to have dove in a desperate attempt to save MJK. To confirm that he did, they brought the two friend witnesses to claim all three dove in attempt to save her. Again, not a single one of them would need to be cross examined, only a statement. No testimony under oath. No risk of perjury. Leaving the scene of an accident covered the whole thing.
Denying the autopsy was encouraged...the parents were told it would be necessary to prove her pregnancy/recent relations. They said absolutely not to keep her reputation from tarnish.
The decision not to autopsy, provided a way to avoid heavier career ending charges AND that coupled with the wet clothes provided the defense the solution to cop to lessor charge of LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT. ~ ANOTHER TIME PERFORMING THE AUTOPSY MEANT EVERYTHING.
