MGMT, a great indie duo from the end of the 2000s, faced critical and commercial highs and lows. Initially forming as a playful duo known as The Management, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser navigated the indie scene with a blend of irony and experimentation. Their breakthrough album, "Oracular Spectacular," catapulted them to mainstream success with hits like "Kids", "Time to Pretend," and "Electric Feel", showcasing a fusion of neo-psychedelia and indietronica.
However, subsequent releases, such as "Congratulations" and the self-titled "MGMT," veered away from commercial expectations, embracing a more introspective and experimental sound. Their return to prominence with "Little Dark Age" in 2018 signaled a resurgence, blending synthpop with their signature psychedelic aesthetic.
Now, with their latest release, "Loss of Life," MGMT continues to defy expectations, experimenting with new collaborators and sounds while maintaining their artistic integrity. Despite challenges and shifts in the music industry, MGMT's refusal to conform to commercial pressures has allowed them to maintain relevance and artistic freedom, cementing their status as an enduring force in indie music.

While I like all the music they've made.....to this day, I still love *_Oracular Spectacular_* the most. Hands down.
A big part of that is timing. I first discovered them via their 2005 6 song Time to Pretend EP. That EP, and Oracular, were THE soundtrack to my 20s. I'm the exact same age as Andrew(by like 3 days) and their music immediately resonated with me. I also love how that album isn't remotely _trying_ to be pop...it's super psychedelic and weird and eclectic. But the songs are SO good and impossibly catchy and well made that it _can't help_ but be pop...indeed, top 40 pop. I think that's cool.
My favorite albums tend to be that rare confluence of experimental creative expression...AND hyper catchy hooky perfectly honed pop songwriting. And Oracular is perfect on those counts. Along with Merriweather Post Pavilion, All Hour Cymbals, and KALA, that was such a fertile time for that scene of music. I also remember loving their interviews back then...they clearly loved music and took it seriously, but they were my age, young, hîgh like ALL the time, funny, and just seemed like the cool yet awkward creative weirdo friends I knew.

I can't imagine listening their music in 2005 bc for me their songs were soooo 2009/10 hahaha but also because in São Paulo, Brazil (my city) indie music got more popular at that time (when these indie bands went into mainstream). And about the pop thing some people label that way only bc it was successful. Mainstream pop from that time felt nothing like that! Thanks for comment!
