Dropping the jaw of Mama Cass was no small thing. She was music royalty of the time and a Hall of Fame inductee.

The reason Mama Cass in the JJ song was a self promotion because the Mamas and the Papas help sponsor the festival

There had also been a competition if you will between the music Cass was doing and what Janis brought from Texas. She left here (Austin) for CA, and the rest is history.

As others have said, the woman in the crowd was Mama Cass. What made that so special was Mama Cass was one of the top female singers of that generation and a future member of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

She could croon and sing with rich clarity, but actively sought to convey emotion over form. Rawness was so highly valued in that era and scene.

It's what made her stand out at the time... There weren't all that many female vocalists in rock bands at that time, and almost none that sang with the raw power she did

Having grown up in this area, I was there for this incredible performance. Jimi Hendrix had his break out performance this weekend also. That was Mama Cass from the Mamas and the Poppas. She was instrumental in creating this festival who was in shock and awe as we all were. Janis was such a force of nature and moved and shook people and left them changed including me. I saw her once more in 1969 in San Francisco and so grateful I did🎶‼️
Her rendition of summertime is beautiful as well as Me and Bobby McGhee. Thanks for bringing our Pearl to the party🌹🎈❣️

Take a minute to look up what singers influenced Janis Joplin. Big Mama Thornton, Odetta, Bessie Smilth, Leadbelly, among others. I read that she didn't have a very happy childhood and didn't want to be or do what her family expected her to be or do. Seems to me a lot of young people can relate to that. The Blues singers, especially the female blues singers were her idols. I was in high school back then. I heard Janis for the first time on a bootleg FM radio station one night and got her first album as soon as I could. 'Janis,' I'd say to myself alone in my room. "I got the blues today. Tell it for me.' She didn't just tell it, she shouted it! A white woman blues shouter is what she was. Time and past time for that! And man, could she ever!

Janis is on a level of her own. There are videos of her and the band performing on the Dick Cavett Show. He would interview her after a song and she was exhausted. In every performance she bore all that was in her right before you. That is brave. I am so grateful for your appreciation of this earlier music.

But instead you just stated your mind. I think the studio version of piece of my heart when Janis had developed her voice a bit more would be something you would be impressed with. Theres no holding back the mike. Just loud raw power. Good luck to you!

JANIS JOPLIN - BALL & CHAIN LIVE @ MONTEREY POP... This was her breakout performance. She died of a heroin overdose. She had been clean but while she was waiting for somebody to show up she decided to get high and didn't check the strength as it usually was cut to only 10%. Not this time. There were a lot of deaths in LA from it which became a story line for Cop shows. Find the killer heroin. Her greatest hit was ... Me and My Bobby McGee ..that was released after she died.

I LOVE Janice Joplin, she has soul pouring out of every pore of her being. This is not the best quality audio and it is live back in the day. If you got to close to the mic with that powerful of a voice, you would have been having a lot of feedback screeching so you kind of had to back away a bit. Thank you for your reaction. That lady in the crowd was Cass Elliot who was an awesome singer for the group The Mamas and The Papas. Cass had the most beautiful voice, you should really check out a song or two from that group. Their harmonies were excellent. One of my favorite Janis Joplin songs is "Cry Baby" she really takes that song to the limit.

If I remember correctly, Janis went out to buy heroin, but it was not from her usual source, so she had no idea of the strength, and it was much much stronger than what she would normally have, and that's what got her. When my mother was dying of cancer in 1989, she was in much pain, and the morphine they had had her on was not sufficient. I asked the nurse why hospitals couldn't use heroin and she basically said the same thing - they would be unable to determine the strength. I don't know if that still holds true today....
