How to do Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog)

  • Adho Mukha Svanasana posture replicates a dog bending forward, hence the name downward facing dog pose. This asana can be practiced by any beginner too and with all its benefits, one should include it as a part of daily yoga practice. It is a standing pose and mild inversion that builds strength while stretching the whole body. Yoga expert Joshna Ramakrishnan from 'Maya and Josh' shows us how to do Adho Mukha Svanasana.

    i love the way it is shown here .. 1 qs - my heels do not touch the ground ... how do i get the heels to touch the ground

      Morning is best, but if you don't have time in morning you can do it in evening before sunset i.e around 3 or 4 pm.

      If you are doing it in evening just make sure you have a gap of 3-4 hours between lunch and workout

      Ofcourse u can hold it but as you come down u can gradually leave breath...

    What is the difference in adho mukha and parvatasana (mountain pose)

      The terms are interchangeable. But the problem arises when some schools refer to Tadasana as mountain pose. So I think people use the term 'downward dog' for clarity.

      @@VentunoYoga should it not be that all yoga asanas performed as a system should help the entire body including the shoulders ??? after all human body is a collection of different organ systems....

      If you have a shoulder problem, first get that sorted. Do not do this if your shoulders are not completely functional.

      Hold for 5 breaths initially. As you gain experience, you can hold the pose for longer.

      You need to do yoga with a senior and experienced Yoga teacher if you have such challenges. There are specialist Yoga teachers that you need to reach out to. Please don't go with a teacher who is trained to do just basic Yoga.
