I had this record, but sadly it broke over forty years ago. On the other side the crowd sang the Welsh National Anthem, my mother always cried when she heard it. Thank you for sharing a recording I miss so much.
Some others I've heard were even worse. Those professional singers always trash the music. Basically lazy, always unfit, hideous forced voices, grunting and sliding up to notes, and that infuriating perpetual quivering. Pitch usually higher, sometimes by as much as a fifth, in at least one case B flat rather than E flat as it should be, to accommodate their voice ranges, or their brat demands. More interested in their own egos and a bit of extra money than in the music.
Still sing this when i attend the fa cup final. Always stand. Unfortunately the younger generation dont affiliate with this emotional anthem, through no fault of their own i stress. Probably the only iconic thing left at Wembley now
that's quite an amazing thing. You're watching a UA-cam video showcasing an historical event you actually attended and have commented on it 93 years later on a digital platform which, at the time you were there, you couldn't have begun to invisage. I think that's the closest we'll ever get to time travel.
Watching the FA Cup final this year I noted the lack of singing of 'Abide With Me'. Is it that football has changed so much that people don't know the words or is it that it means nothing to the fans of today? In years gone by it was a sung with great passion by the real fans of the past. I can almost feel all those coalminers, steel workers and others - with so much pride and respect. Now it seems its about money, prawns, shirts and tickets andr £200,000 a week
@miserichord Actually, I'm of the opinion that if they ditched the female opera singers leading it at Wembley these days, you'd hear it faithfully sung by the crowd, even on the videos on here. It's one of the last great tritions remaining of English football and it's treasured by English fans.
This is wonderful. Thank you for sharing. A real taste of a time when very few of us were alive to experience. Keeps us in touch with the heritage of our game, and its traditions. Am I right in thinking this was even before Wembley Stadium? So, so spine tingling. Abide with me.
Just to point out to the presenter, 1927 was the first time Abide With Me was sung at the FA Cup Final. It is a tradition which is upheld to this day, that Abide With Me is sung straight after God Save the King/Queen.
excellent - the days when the FA appreciated that 100,000 voices are far more stirring than some poncey twat showing off his falsetto. This is a football match, not the bloody opera !
on the match of the days 100 years of Arsenal vhs video there is footage of the fans singing Abide with me as the German Airship Graf Zeppelin looms overhead of the 1930 f.a cup final, the crowd singing this beautiful song drowned out the airships engines, and ofcoarse the Arsenal beat Huddersfield Town 2-0
Here in Australia you cant see the FA Cup final unless you have pay TV, Football (soccer) plays second fiddle to the indigenous, village green style footy, AFL, Rugby League and 'spare me'cricket, any way. Brainwashing media, with their financial, barrows to push, see to that. Its not so much the game i miss ,but the tradition .Singing 'Abide with me" being perhaps the most endearing .You dont have to be religious, or even the Christian faith,Its purely and simpley ,tradition The Anthem of the FA cup,The oldest knock out competition in the world
I was at the FA Cup Final this year, the problem is that the crowd don't know Abide with Me is playing, it's not played over the PA system. You can hardly notice it. The fact that some awful singers ruin it makes it worse. They should just play the band through the PA system and let the crowd do the rest.
I heard LFC fans booing abide with me in 2022 fa cup final and I disliked that vid within a second. LFC is the most supported club in my church and all the LFC fans in my church had a watch party for big games. During the watch party for the 2022 FA cup final, we all sang Abide With Me together before the final kicked off, as we turned the volume of the TV down.
It's also sung at the Challenge Cup Final. I waited 51 years from 1969 until 2020 for a chance to sing it again at Wembley, when my team played but we were socially distanced and there was no crowd. The soccer fans of today might not be as respectful of the hymn as the Cardiff and Arsenal supporters of 1927 (Cardiff won 1-0), but the rugby league community certainly are.
Wow, I wept. Ephraim, one day you will sing this song with your brother Manasseh across the sea, "And the light of (TRUE celto-saxon) Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One (CHRIST JESUS) for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day." God speed the day.
@miserichord the reason: nobody goes to church any more and knows the words. ill admit myself that i dont go to church, but i do know the words to this hymn.
This is beautiful, unlike the silly half-hearted renditions we hear these days, sung by untalented female pop stars or black inner-city London choirs who can't even get the tune right (see 2009). This is the way Abide With Me SHOULD be sung at the Cup Final...by the CROWD.
I wonder if anybody knows the last time that the FA Cup final didn't have some idiot singing and ruining the atmosphere before the match has even begun. What year was it? As far as I can see on youtube this is the only instance we have of a band playing and the crowd singing Abide with Me. Sad...
1987 is the last time I can find on youtube. Unfortunately the crowd stopped singing it probably by the early 1980s and just started chanting their stupid twat chants over the top. That is why they introduced the singer to lead the singing.

Would love for it to be like this still, such a great tradition. Quality video
I had no idea Abide with Me was sung at the FA cup so far back in time. It's a wonderful tradition.
Back in the days of communal singing and most people going to the local church every sunday. This crowd probably knew all the verses off by heart.
A more civilised time indeed

wish those peasants that go to wembley nowadays could sing the hymn as beautifully as their forefathers did in 1927
Having 50% of Welsh voices in this crowd made the difference
This recording deserves a digitalised audio restoration.
Beautiful, just beautiful. I've been at a FA Cup Final (2006) where Abide with me was ruined by the caterwauling of Lesley Garrett.
Some others I've heard were even worse.

I'm a younger generation and I proudly sing it for its true Christian meaning.
I remember it well. Was a beautiful rendition, was great to be a part of it that day.
Ahaha

Beautiful, played at my mother's funeral, Great sound thank you
This recording gives goosebumps.

So very true.
Great comment. The ponces have spoiled it for sure. Let the crowd sing it.

Well said. Shouting bellowing shrieking quivering attention whores, more interested in their own egos than in music.

I went to Wembley for the FA Cup in 1951 and was terribly afraid they would not let me in, if I didn't know the words to THE HYMN
It's wonderful to hear people such as yourself telling their stories.
When they really sang it!! Nowadays, to our shame, none of us know the words...
Is that really true that Welsh people dont know lyrics of anthem because of UK? Cheers from Croatia

The entire singsong Super duper mega all everything abide with me!!!!! (Ft. Everyone)
What more proof do you need that this song, when sung by football fans, do not need pointless celebrities to lead them in singing
Because the world today has lost its way in the faith of God.
@Mikeb1001 Thanks very much !
Fantastic... shame that the moneymen have taken over and traditions are no longer respected full stop.
@dickinsm It was a commercially produced record sold in 1927
absol brill, thank you

Very moving

Sad...
+bg anonimouse British Pathe have quite a few videos of cup finals in the 60's that have just the crowd singing
1987 is the last time I can find on youtube. Unfortunately the crowd stopped singing it probably by the early 1980s and just started chanting their stupid twat chants over the top. That is why they introduced the singer to lead the singing.
1990 version was good.
Liverpool vs Everton 1986 was amok with those ‘twat’ chants, leave it to the classy Scousers to fuck up such a beautiful ritual.
Someone needs to have a rummage sale or call the people from the hoarders show.
Like most youngsters who went to football in the 70s I despised this religious crap but this is deeply moving no question
@quentedlin you use a video about football supporters singing a hymn to push some and semitic political shite? grow up.
I think it is time Abide with me was dropped from the cup final prelims. The fans are only interested in their own chants.
