I would say without thinking for a second, that motherf...er hewlett packard company would use a custom format, that is incompatible even with their own other products. You know, we are talking about one of the greediest, most-anti-consumer company in the planet.
It's actually surprising how compatible cards are. I LOATH dell servers and their proprietary bull *cough* I had a system we retired and pulled the drives out of. Went to wipe them out on another machine and even though it already had a virtual disk it wanted to import the disks from the Dell. I was impressed enough that I always destroy arrays before removing them now lol. Of course most of dells raid controllers are based off LSI controllers so it makes sense. Cool video showing off how good Linux software raid has gotten. That's really cool
Thanks for sharing your own experience. Yeah, linux software raid also supports other formats besides DDF, so it's actually pretty interesting option for data recovery efforts when the RAID controller is not available.

Sorry, I don't know much about Windows. However, the hardware portion of this video should work with any OS. I don't know what software RAID capabilities Windows has.
Interesting and informative. Great work! I do not worry too much about losing data if I have to switch any of my RAID cards if they break, as I too live by the old adage “RAID is not a backup.” So if the worst did happen, and I was forced into building a new RAID on a new card, I could restore from my backup. Of course, if I lost a Server RAID and my Backup-Server RAID both at the same time, I could lose some data as my external Backup is usually a day or two behind. However, I have three servers running. Two Productive and one for data backups. I have two identical replacement RAID cards for my DELL R710 on the shelf, and the other two “home-made” Servers use identical cards, so I could short-term rob Peter to pay Paul if I had to. BTW, I am not finding a x16 PCI Riser for that DELL R710 anywhere at any price :-( so if you were to find another one and see a way to get it to Germany, please let me know. Pretty please :-)

@@ArtofServer I have a QUADR2000 that I wanted to put in the server. So clearly my aim is at video decoding and rendering (especially UE4, Blender etc..) So I thought the x16 card might be an option to get that Quadro into a VM on the R710 (Windows Server 2016) but it’s just a project, not a real job :-) Would x8 be enough? Probably, but what is with power? The card draws only from the PCIe (75w) I would love to have your thoughts.
@@rigsbyrigged1831 I've had many customers buy my modified x8 riser to run Quadro P2000 in their R710. Mostly for video transcoding (NVENC/NVDEC) with PLEX and have used it without any problems as far as power consumption is concerned.
Great vid - i am afraid of raid and havent used hardware raid for years due to painfull hardware failures - maybe ill give em a go again as theoretically, embedded hardware performs better and is more reliable than software solutions.

Some experiments to share. I created several RAID0 for individual drives using megaraidsm gui on PopOS on a 9260-4i 2108 raid only controller. I swapped the 9260 for a 9211-4i 2008 based HBA controller card. RAID0 disks automagically appeared in 'disks' gui of popos as mdadm device. I wrote to the disks, swapped the 9260 back in and it could explore the filesystem changes previously made with the 9211 hba card connected with no issues. Next I created a RAID1 on ths 9260 and it appeared working fine with the 9211 back in using mdadm, albeit slower. Finally I deleted RAID0 virtual drives under the 9260 and they disappeared in megaraidsm and popos system 'disks' gui app being a 2108 based raid only card with no pass through, however these RAID0 drives now appeared as normal regular devices/filesystems under the 9211 back in again so the data was accessible as any fs although ofc cannot put the 9260 in and read them any more. So i am not afraid of RAID and losing data as I have proven I can swap in another card 9211 and read the data still, even when virtual individual raid0 drives removed and not showing up because no non raid passthru on the 9260.
My last RAID build .. Cheap used LSI based real RAID controller, unfortunately without cache option.. and needed insulation on some PCIe pins to work with non-server motherboard (some SPI confusion) - 20€ Fanout cbles 1xMiniSAS-4xSAS/SATA, 2pcs, about 40€ total Crown jewel of setup - 8x2.5 to 4x5.25 disk enclosure Icybox IB-2280SSK - about 120€ 8x400GB Intel's server class SATA SSD's .. salvage, priceless ;) And now i'm on the crossroads .. wtf i'll put in my vm server .. this RAID setup for disk performance or (salvaged) Nvidia Tesla for VDI performance .. Probably time to go out and find motherboard with more fast PCIe slots
I recently bought an Adaptec 6805T recently because I liked the fan mount, the supercap "BBU" and the flash backed cache to play around with. Wouldn't mind testing if MDAM picks up the array.
I suppose checking conformance with the DDF specification if planning to use RAID on purpose-built NAS hardware such as QNAP, Synology, etc... It is also worth noting that RAID should not be regarded as an alternative to back-ups and that back-up implementations should have 3-copies:- (1) live copy; (2) secured, on-site back-up ; and (3) off-premises back-ups (be it cloud, service provider hosted, or external media rotating and kept off-premises.)
I have an lsi megaraid 5905 in a low xeon pc for nas with 4 sata drives 4tb each can put in 8 and for this system i choose raid card not hba because the cpu is only a 4core 4 threads and i think raid gives some performance. Paid 60€ for it on amazon, not new but working.
that's great! whatever works for you. there's never just one solution for everyone. everyone should choose what works best for them and there are many choices!

Two Dell R710's, a R410 and a MD3200i complete with rails, all for £60! Now I just need to build a rack and start to play :) A quick question please, can the MD3000i be used with software raid such as UnRaid , ZFS or FreeNas? Thanks again for all your work and output :)
Glad you enjoyed this video! :-) The MD3200i is not really a JBOD chassis. It's an iSCSI SAN device. I don't know of a way to use that with ZFS/Unraid/TrueNAS/etc.
This video was awesome and eye opening. This might be a dumb question but can the HBA trick be done using a Windows OS? I did a quick search and couldn't find an answer. I'm assuming that if I have a similar controller (ServeRaid 5014) I could replace it with a newer LSI controller and rebuild my existing bootable raid 5 array (on windows server 2016) correct?
Thanks! I'm not a windows user so I really don't know what capabilities windows software RAID has, so I can't answer that. The RAID controllers upgrade is possible. Nonetheless, I would backup your data just in case something goes wrong.

LMAO!!! That machine is usually used for flashing and testing the stuff I sell in my store. So, most of the time, it just needs 1 CPU. You're talking about the X8DTH-iF board? Mine uses about 70w without any PCIe cards, so it's not bad. And since it is before PCIe lanes became part of the CPU, I have 56 PCIe lanes with just one CPU. I used hw RAID for many many years. At work, we used a lot of software RAID in Solaris. They were just fine, but I really like the features of ZFS and that's what I've been using for the last 8-9 yrs, no major problems.

Is it possible to use the on motherboard raid controller to controll the drives from a PCIe sata card (that doesn’t have raid capabilities) i’ m using that as the motherboar has 2 sata 3.0 and 4 sata 2.0 and I want all in sata 3.0 or I must use software controlled raid? Thanks
Wonderful video! I have a question: I'm using a H310 with standard firmware in pass trough mode (non raid), to expose every disks to Proxmox and ZFS running on server (R620). I wish to flash to IT mode in order to enlarge queue from 25 to 600 (because is becaming a bottleneck). Because we are speaking about a production server, I'm scared about the possibility that after flashing new firmaware Proxmox (or ZFS) is not able anymore to recognize the disks and the pool as before. Moreover all disks are in a unique ZFS pool where lives also boot partition. In your opinion is possible to sucessfully flash without broke OS installation?
I've never switched from non-RAID mode to pure IT mode on a ZFS boot drive. I've done it on non-bootable ZFS pools without any issues. I've even done with a single drive RAID-0 setup and swapped to real IT mode HBA and was able to re-import the ZFS pool without issue. That was demonstrated in this video: ua-cam.com/video/S_YN1vluLws/v-deo.html In a production environment, I recommend you have a "back out" plan in case things do not go smoothly. So, in that case, you might consider buying a H310 with IT mode firmware and doing a hardware "swap" instead of flashing the card. In case something goes wrong, you swap back the original H310 card and resume operations. I sell these in my store that are fully tested on all SAS lanes and PCIe lanes, etc. Link to my store in the video description.
These LSI megaraid controller are super cheap now. I just made a parity raid with Storage Spaces. basically raid 5. Will the hardware raid controller offer better performance than the storage space?
I couldn't answer that question without actually testing and comparing. Generally speaking, there are use cases where hardware RAID will excel over any software RAID type of technology, but there are drawbacks too. Look up the video titled "RAID vs HBA" on this channel for a more in-depth discussion.
Great video, thank you, although now that I know that, it got me thinking.... I am thinking about flashing my H710P into IT mode but the only thing stopping me is the fact that I'd have to wipe my system and reinstall it as well. Is there a way to flash to IT mode, assemble 2 disk raid1 that holds OS and be able to boot from it as it was with the controller in RAID mode? Or is ta a lost cause and I'd better just reinstall OS after flashing the H710P?
I'm not sure about that, but my guess is probably not. It can't hurt to try it and find out - if it doesn't work, you're no worse off than having to reinstall it.
I want a true hardware based raid controller that I can install on my windows 10 pc with a internal mini sas connector. I do not want just a host buss adapter because I do not want a software based controller. Is that even possible on a powerful pc? They do it on servers don't they. I'm so confused.
I would look at a SAS2108 based RAID controller at the very least. But if your budget allows, look at a SAS3108 or newer RAID controller with larger cache.
I have the same 9271-8i. Unfortunately the battery check reports a fatal error ("Battery has failed and cannot support data retention. Please replace the battery"). What i don't understand is that its status is "optimal" in MSM with 89% capacitance left. Any idea ?

Hey, could a bad firmware flash cause problems with a HW raid card communicating with the BBU daughterboard? I updated the firmware on my Supermicro 9260-8i, but also tried to zip tie a fan to the card, and now the BBU is listed as FLD. Want to rule out the firmware update being the culprit. The RAID functionality works fine as far as I know.
Did the firmware flash fail? Usually the flashing process will do a byte by byte checksum check to verify successful flash. If that didn't report any problems, then I don't think you have a firmware issue.
@@ArtofServer I figured out the problem. It's a Supermicro card and the BBU unit didn't like the generic flash for some reason. The BBU was recognized after I flashed the SM packaged firmware.
@@ArtofServer I have a Windows server, with LSI RAID cards (9260-8i). I had one fail, so bought a 'new' (9266-8i) one that was a bit of an upgrade. It started having problems after 3 months. I tried to get one of the 9260-8i to recognize the RAID that was created with the 9266-8i, but it wouldn't. I now have two 'new' 9361-8i being shipped to me, hoping that I can get them to recognize the RAID 5 that I created with the new HDD 3 months ago.
The thing is I want to run Unraid since that is the only software that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for subscription since I want docker and VM, but the only thing it doesn't support is clustering which ProxMox does and as far as I can tell is free of charge compared to unraid which $100 for unlimited drives(non hardware raid). And unraid is not supported for hardware raid controller based data backup. It would be nice to have unraid as a backup virt solution for my homelab.
It sounds like your use case should just use HBA + whatever software you choose (unraid or proxmox or ???). I would not try to use a HW RAID card in that case.
@@ArtofServer well unraid and proxmox are the only two that don't cost an arm and a leg in a 4 socket server. Since now everyone is changing to per-core pricing. I also want to setup HA network cluster for compute intensive tasks. I mean yeah sure I could the HBA route, but I already have a PERC 730P controller which is much much faster than unraid. So naturally I went with prox-mox since their OS can write itself in btrfs format so it can fit in a hardware raid array bank. I'm like super new to server space, just now realizing how expensive these T1 hypervisors are compared to throwing in a Linux OS and using kvm as a T2 hypervisor which would be ungodly slow even since the instruction pipeline is windows-vm->kvm->Linux->Hardware, and no one really wants that, I just wish unraid supported HWR arrays rather than locking the customer into SATA cards only

I did see some code in there for adaptec RAID format... it may just work.

I have a question: I'm using a H310 with standard firmware in pass trough mode (non raid), to expose every disks to Proxmox and ZFS running on server (R620). I wish to flash to IT mode in order to enlarge queue from 25 to 600 (because is becaming a bottleneck). Because we are speaking about a production server, I'm scared about the possibility that after flashing new firmaware Proxmox (or ZFS) is not able anymore to recognize the disks and the pool as before. Moreover all disks are in a unique ZFS pool where lives also boot partition.
In your opinion is possible to sucessfully flash without broke OS installation?
I've never switched from non-RAID mode to pure IT mode on a ZFS boot drive. I've done it on non-bootable ZFS pools without any issues. I've even done with a single drive RAID-0 setup and swapped to real IT mode HBA and was able to re-import the ZFS pool without issue. In a production environment, I recommend you have a "back out" plan in case things do not go smoothly. So, in that case, you might consider buying a H310 with IT mode firmware and doing a hardware "swap" instead of flashing the card. In case something goes wrong, you swap back the original H310 card and resume operations. I sell these in my store that are fully tested on all SAS lanes and PCIe lanes, etc. Link to my store in the video description.

I couldn't answer that question without actually testing and comparing. Generally speaking, there are use cases where hardware RAID will excel over any software RAID type of technology, but there are drawbacks too. Look up the video titled "RAID vs HBA" on this channel for a more in-depth discussion.
Great video, thank you, although now that I know that, it got me thinking.... I am thinking about flashing my H710P into IT mode but the only thing stopping me is the fact that I'd have to wipe my system and reinstall it as well. Is there a way to flash to IT mode, assemble 2 disk raid1 that holds OS and be able to boot from it as it was with the controller in RAID mode? Or is ta a lost cause and I'd better just reinstall OS after flashing the H710P?
I'm not sure about that, but my guess is probably not. It can't hurt to try it and find out - if it doesn't work, you're no worse off than having to reinstall it.

I want a true hardware based raid controller that I can install on my windows 10 pc with a internal mini sas connector. I do not want just a host buss adapter because I do not want a software based controller. Is that even possible on a powerful pc? They do it on servers don't they. I'm so confused.
I would look at a SAS2108 based RAID controller at the very least. But if your budget allows, look at a SAS3108 or newer RAID controller with larger cache.

Yes, HBA controllers pass the drive directly to OS, so you can always change HBA controllers.

there are lot of options. i would start with a minimum of using a LSI SAS2208 based controller, or a SAS3108.

Hey, could a bad firmware flash cause problems with a HW raid card communicating with the BBU daughterboard? I updated the firmware on my Supermicro 9260-8i, but also tried to zip tie a fan to the card, and now the BBU is listed as FLD. Want to rule out the firmware update being the culprit. The RAID functionality works fine as far as I know.
Did the firmware flash fail? Usually the flashing process will do a byte by byte checksum check to verify successful flash. If that didn't report any problems, then I don't think you have a firmware issue.
@@ArtofServer No, it went through just fine. I'll take the BBU assembly off and give it a look. That's the last time I do something like that.
@@ArtofServer I figured out the problem. It's a Supermicro card and the BBU unit didn't like the generic flash for some reason. The BBU was recognized after I flashed the SM packaged firmware.

That would be interesting. But I think that means you'd have to port the software RAID technology to Windows.
@@ArtofServer I have a Windows server, with LSI RAID cards (9260-8i). I had one fail, so bought a 'new' (9266-8i) one that was a bit of an upgrade. It started having problems after 3 months. I tried to get one of the 9260-8i to recognize the RAID that was created with the 9266-8i, but it wouldn't.
I now have two 'new' 9361-8i being shipped to me, hoping that I can get them to recognize the RAID 5 that I created with the new HDD 3 months ago.
The thing is I want to run Unraid since that is the only software that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for subscription since I want docker and VM, but the only thing it doesn't support is clustering which ProxMox does and as far as I can tell is free of charge compared to unraid which $100 for unlimited drives(non hardware raid). And unraid is not supported for hardware raid controller based data backup. It would be nice to have unraid as a backup virt solution for my homelab.
It sounds like your use case should just use HBA + whatever software you choose (unraid or proxmox or ???). I would not try to use a HW RAID card in that case.
@@ArtofServer well unraid and proxmox are the only two that don't cost an arm and a leg in a 4 socket server. Since now everyone is changing to per-core pricing. I also want to setup HA network cluster for compute intensive tasks. I mean yeah sure I could the HBA route, but I already have a PERC 730P controller which is much much faster than unraid. So naturally I went with prox-mox since their OS can write itself in btrfs format so it can fit in a hardware raid array bank. I'm like super new to server space, just now realizing how expensive these T1 hypervisors are compared to throwing in a Linux OS and using kvm as a T2 hypervisor which would be ungodly slow even since the instruction pipeline is windows-vm->kvm->Linux->Hardware, and no one really wants that, I just wish unraid supported HWR arrays rather than locking the customer into SATA cards only
