Also if you travel to Hungary (at least to Budapest) and speak Hungarian with the locals (not necessarily even having full blown conversations, just simply ordering food or interacting with a cashier at the supermarket), even if you have some trouble understanding their responses, they're generally super appreciative of your efforts and at least in my experience they'll go from polite, but rather reserved, to still polite, but also very friendly. And it's even more transparent with elderly people. I can share a story of having accidentaly broken my gf's glasses and going around the town to fix them. We were stressed and in a hurry, so I didn't make effort and just spoke English. We went to some fancy optical salon in the centre of Pest as it was the nearest one. They told us they couldn't fix it (maybe willing that we'd be pushed to buy a new pair at their salon, idk). So then we went to the second one, which was a small venue at the very end of some smaller street. The elderly lady whom we encountered there, either couldn't or didn't wanna speak English with me and acted rather cold about it. The second I said "Azért" and then followed up with the explanation of the problem, while googling how to say "glasses' frame" in Hungarian on the side (its "szemüveg keretje" if you ever wondered. Now that noun is instilled in my mind), she changed her attitude by 180* and acted super sweet throughout the entirety of the conversation. She fixed the glasses and didn't even wanna charge us for it

@@FrederikCorneliustravelFrederik gratulálok most hivatalosan boldoggá tetted a magyarokat Frederik congratulation you officially made hungaryans happy
I am learning both languages Hungarian and Danish, and also Icelandic / Norse / Dutch / Norwegian / Gothic / Faroese etc and all other Germanic languages and the modern Celtic languages etc, because they are so pretty and very easy to learn, even Hungarian which is an agglutinative language, so, even though Hungarian is very different with very different grammar, it is actually one of the easiest languages, which can be learnt quite fast, kinda like Germanic languages, especially if one focuses mostly on vocab, and if one figures out how its grammar works, it will be quite easy to use it, as the only difference is, that in agglutinative languages, the prepositions are added at the end of the noun and are written as one word and they are referred to as postpositions, and even though I don’t know any agglutinative languages fluently, I kinda figured out how agglutinative languages work, so I don’t feel like they are that different now! Hungarian is a mid category 2 language spelling-wise and it has an easy category 1 pronunciation, almost as easy as Icelandic / English / Dutch / Norse / Gothic pronunciation, and, Danish has a very easy and light category 1 spelling and a category 2 pronunciation like German / Brazilian Portuguese / Faroese / Swedish / French, so Danish pronunciation takes more practice to get the exact accent, as it has an accent that is a bit ‘harder’ to imitate, like German and Faroese, but the words themselves are very easy to learn! Danish and Hungarian words are also super easy to memorize, as most of them are very pretty, and one naturally remembers the prettier and more distinctive words faster, and even though I am beginner level in both Danish and Hungarian at the moment, I can understand most Danish words I see because I am advanced level in Norwegian and upper intermediate level in Icelandic / Norse / German and upper advanced level in Dutch! Hungarian is very different from the other languages I am learning, and it is closely related to Turkish, as they come from the same Proto language, which is why they have the same word endings like ek / rök / k / mek / nek / tek / ök and many cognates, but Hungarian is actually a pretty language with mostly pretty words, as it was influenced a lot by Germanic / Norse languages, and it is very unique overall, so most of the Hungarian words aren’t obvious cognates with words from any other language, and its numbers are also very unique! I highly recommend learning Hungarian and Danish 2gether with Icelandic / Norse / Dutch / Norwegian / Gothic / Faroese etc, which are also super gorgeous - these languages are the prettiest languages ever created, as pretty / refined / poetic as English, so they are way too pretty not to know, and they are all super fun to learn / speak / hear / see etc!
By the way, Hungarian has a relaxed pronunciation, so the muscles involved in speaking and the lips are kept relaxed when saying words in Hungarian and the words are pronounced normally, but Danish has a non-relaxed pronunciation like English / Dutch / German / Welsh / Faroese / Brazilian Portuguese / French, so the muscles involved in speaking and the lips are tensed up (it’s kinda subconscious, one isn’t even aware of it) and a different sound placement is used, which is what gives these languages that different / modern sound, and this is something that one does automatically, it’s all controlled by the hern, and it’s really hard to explain how this works, but if one keeps trying to imitate the exact sounds one hears and tensing up the lips and muscles involved in speaking to different levels and if one tries different sound placements, one will get the right Danish accent eventually, and, with languages that use a non-relaxed pronunciation, I feel like it would be way easier to get the right accent if one knew all the words and the pronunciation of each word automatically, so, first learning all the words automatically, like, really automatically, and listening to the language a lot, while reading the subs, and then when getting to an upper intermediate or advanced level, trying to pronounce the words, and normally, pronunciation should improve naturally, once one knows a lot of the words automatically, so it takes a lot of revising and repeating, and also typing a lot in the language, to develop a muscle memory and reflexive memory, in addition to learning the words with their pronunciation automatically, and also listening to the language being spoken a lot, like, hearing each word hundreds of times, over a longer period of time, and then the pronunciation should come naturally, especially if one remembers to consciously tense up the lips and the muscles involved in speaking, and to not pronounce the words like in the first language that one was made to learn and trying different sound placements, until one gets the right sound and until new speaking habits are formed, and then it should all be like second nature! I highly recommend focusing mostly on vocab, and learning hundreds and thousands of new words every regularly, while also regularly revising previously learnt words, many times, over a longer period of time, until every word can be instantly processed and automatically remembered, and memorizing as many lyrics as possible (for example, learning all the Skáld songs which are in many Norse / Germanic / Nordic languages and Nox songs such as Nem Lesz Több Danc) is also a great way to learn many new words and phrases in a fun way, and also, always watching every single video and movie with subs in the target languages, which are the best and most effective ways of languages many pretty and easy languages! I use all these language learning techniques such as spaced repetition and memorizing lyrics and watching everything with subs etc, having over 50 target languages, and learning new words in about 15 of my target languages regularly and in some of the other target languages occasionally, and usually prioritizing about five languages the most, and I see a lot of progress fast, so, even though watching and rewatching vocab videos many times isn’t the most fun part about learning languages, it is definitely the most efficient and necessary!

Great video! Thank you for speaking so nicely about our beautiful culture and language. I would like to just add that a part of the 'formal" language that we speak is much more intricate and respectful of elderly, and of people in higher positions. For instance a younger gentleman would say to an older woman "kezet csokolom" az a greeting. This means I kiss your hand. Also, my father didn't call his mom 'Anya" or "Anyu" he would say "Edesanya" which means sweet mother. Or you would ask someone "Hogy tetszik lenni/" which word for word means "how do you enjoy being/" or in other words "How are you" Just a few examples on how different we speak with elderly to show respect.

She fixed the glasses and didn't even wanna charge us for it
amazing, I'll go to Szeged for studying classical music for this year, and i also would like to learn Hungarian, Your videos encouraged me ,thank you!

It might sound odd, but I absolutely love the word “krumpli”. It just rolls off the tongue so well 😂
I’ll be following your channel from now on to learn Hungarian! 🇭🇺
Much love from the UK!
That's a good one! Made me smile when I learned that.
What do you think about kurbli then? XD
I also love krumpli😂 (means potato in Hungarian if u didn't know) but i love sült krumpli more! (French fries) Much love from Hungary!
Sok szeretet Magyarországtól!
Krampampuli = New Year's Eve alcoholic hot drink. Dried fruits (plums, peaches, dates, figs, etc.), walnuts, almonds, raisins, hazelnuts, mulled wine, rum...

Heh the hungarian "krumpli" is actually a german origin word. Comes from "grundbirne".
I'm always impressed when anyone learns to speak English fluently. And add to that you are learning Hungarian which is a beast. Enjoyed this video.
Awesome video! I am taking a trip to Hungary this summer and want to be able to speak a bit of Hungarian!
Yes, I would like you to do a Hungarian language course! Also, how long did it take you to learn Hungarian? My favorite words in Hungarian: Egy sört szeretnék.
XD
Annyira megható volt az egész kis sete suta filmecske. Köszönjük!
Szia Frederik! As a Hungarian I am very glad for this video! Keep on learning, you've made such a big achievement! Danish is hard to pronounce too anyway hahahahahaha
Hey Bence! Thanks for watching! I am grateful for being able to learn Hungarian and speak it everyday with Hungarians! Danish is not easy either
@@FrederikCorneliustravelFrederik gratulálok most hivatalosan boldoggá tetted a magyarokat
Frederik congratulation you officially made hungaryans happy
@@thetrueoneandonlyladyprinc8038 WOW! Te nagyon tehetséges vagy, hogy ennyi nyelven beszelsz/tanulsz. Sokan vagyunk akik nem képesek egyetlen 1 nyelvet megtanulni. Én angol nyelvterületen élek már 23 éve, és még minding akad problémám (na, nem sok 😀)
Nice video also good with all the examples
Thanks
The Hungarian language is indeed very difficult, but extremely refined. Using it, all emotions can be expressed with great sensitivity. If you know Hungarian even better than this, you will get the hang of it!
By the way, congratulations, you speak well and pronounce the words well! ❤
Nice video! Congratulations on your Hungarian, you speak it very nicely. Yes, please do a Hungarian language course, I'm pretty sure it will be appreciated by many. Thanks!
Thank you! Will do!
I am impressed you took the time and effort to learn, being a native Hungarian/English speaker I have forgotten more than I care to think and still strive to keep my heritage alive.
Hello Oldman! Thank you so much! It's a difficult language that I have ben learning at home for some time living in Hungary.
@@FrederikCorneliustravel Hi! What's your great goal? The number one motivation learning the language?
if peopels talk about difficult language they think of Chines and Russian bacause the letter. Yeah thats also can make a language difficult but relly i born in Hungary i speak Hungarian and its still difficult so I am VERY impressed that you speak Hungarian so well.
Brother, it's pretty obvious you love the language and the country. Much respect. 👊
Nagyon jól tudsz magyarul beszélni😁
You can talk hungary very well😁
Kedves Fred, gratulálok ! You are very sympathetic and your advice is useful. Keep up your excellent job!
Just a tip for video making: try to find fonts with accented letters. Now for emphasis is good but other times, it is annoying that it is not the same looking letter as the others. When you download them you can see which ones are in.
Pretty good video! Congrats on learning and using the language. I knew a few people that are living here and had been married for years and still didn't speak a word of Hungarian. So congrats! 👍
great video! Also never try to eat wild chestnuts from the tree, it’s not what they are selling. roasted chestnuts are a different edible type called mild chestnuts (szelíd gesztenye). vadgesztenye is poisonousk
I want to learn more , I'm mostly of Hungarian descent, three of my grandparents and father are from there. Yet I Don't speak because they weren't a part of my life, and my father came here so young he's not super fluent. Thanks for this
Very encouraging; thanks.
Very cool. It helps to be young and positive too.

2:23 Also there is a more formal way: " Jó napot kívánok!" meaning "I wish you a good day". "Jó napot" is actually an abbreviation of that, but saying just "'Jó napot!" it totally fine.
Hi Frederik!
Thank you so much for your interesting and genuine insights about hungarian language and culture in general.
I will visit Budapest soon, for the first time and I'm very excited for. Your content are really helping me a lot, thank you!, thank you again! :)

Thanks for this video -- new to your channel.
I''ve been learning on and off using Duolingo but haven't really made a goal -- it's really just out of curiosity. In terms of favourite words, I laughed when I learned "bisztonságos" ("safe") because it's so long compared to English! It's very interesting seeing how the language works :)
This is the first video from someone who learns Hungarian but speaks in English for the whole time. You are giving general tips for language learners.

Győr and a Danish guy - brings back memories :D
About 15 years ago, a Danish journalist was coming to Győr to do a story about the women's handball team, he asked my help to be some kind of fixer for him. Everything went fine, and before he left he admitted he had been worried about what kind of people and culture he would meet in the wild east :D
He had probably pictured donkey drawn carts, big hairy giants eating with bare hands in smoky restaurants :D
So I think it was a relief for him. It's just another nice European city.
"Sziasztok mindenkinek" is never used like this, just "Sziasztok" is enough.
I’m trying 😔
why? hello everyone seems like a pretty reasonable phrase as an english speaker. genuinely wondering
@@the0n3buc5uc
Because "sziasztok" is already plural. It's for everyone. Szia is hi, hello , just for one person.
@@andushka2768 ah i see, thank you. im also trying to learn hungarian but there are so few resources online compared to somethong like russian or german
@@the0n3buc5uc As @andushka2768 said "sziasztok" is already plural, but you can still use something like "Üdv (or üdvözlet) mindenkinek" which is more formal.
I think learning the alphabet is one of the most important things. You should understand the special letters which are used in Hungarian, like sz, zs, gy, ty, dzs. It will help you to pronounce the words more easily in which these letters are used. Besides that, you will understand that these are single letters and not two separate ones.
It would be great if u started a basic Hungarian course!!
Thanks for the videoooo

My Nana was Hungarian, born in mersevat and when she came to USA, met her husband, and started her family, her husband would not let her teach the kids the language because he didn't want his children to speak a language that he could not speak. Sadly the language in our family passed with her, but her chicken paprikash and her walnut and poppy seed rolls are still made by the family. I make it the best 😉. Her one remaining sister still lives in Budapest and I pray to meet her one day before she goes home to be with my nana.

You speak Hungarian much better than I speak Danish. I'm so glad you've made so much progress, and I'm ashamed. It's true, all Danes prefer to speak to me in English, it's more convenient for them. It seems the Hungarians are more patient.

If there are any native Norwegian speaker who wants to learn Hungarian I would like to help you learn and practice Hungarian and I also want to learn Norwegian. So language exchange!
Igen, mivel magyarország több szempontból is egy kicsit kilóg, és hát kis nemezet, emiatt az embereket általában pozitív értelemben meglepi, ha egy külföldről jött ember beszéli a nyelvet. Biztosan szlovákiában vagy szlovéniában is meglepődnének, ha elkezdenél helyi nyelven beszélni. Sok sikert magyarországon, vagy bárhová vigyen az élet!
It is interesting!
Need more effort to memorize all the words.
For me, the hardest is when there are commas above each word.
In my country Indonesia, we rarely use commas in every word. I never see it.
That is a big difference. 😅
Ahh the commas and grammar might be difficult! The words can be easy to remember with different tricks!
