Vegeta's atonement is definitely one of the best moments in all of dragon ball.

It's also the moment that it's firmly set in stone that his days of being a villain or anti-hero are truly over and that he's finally made the full transition into a hero (remember, when he's brought back to fight Buu by Yemma, Vegeta agreed without being given any indication or promise of a reward, which makes that a truly selfless act on his part, particularly since if he were to die in soul form he would cease to exist entirely to the point that not even the Dragon Balls could bring him back). Him coming up with the set of wishes during the fight with Kid Buu was pretty much the "formality" that confirmed to others like King Yemma that he truly had changed and become a far more selfless person, and thus deserved a second chance at life.
Here, seeing Trunks so adamant about helping him probably gave Vegeta flashbacks to when Cell killed Future Trunks, and Vegeta was determined to not allow his son to get hurt or killed like that ever again, so he did what he felt was necessary to keep both Trunks and Goten safe.
Plus, Vegeta's entire redemption arc in-universe takes a *_LONG_* time for him to shift from a Villain into a Hero, as in-universe it takes 11 years for him to complete his redemption arc.

This is my favorite moment with Vegeta, followed by "My Bulma" and "My Baby Boy", any time that Vegeta admits that he cares about his family, is his best moment. Here is to more Kai reactions, Vegeta, may he rest in peace for now.

The show botg rage moment is far worse than the movie version
Vegeta knowing he was going to essentially hell (HIFL), still chose to sacrifice himself. Honestly this moment still gets to me to this day. 😢
Just as a neat tidbit, it is Hell, they called it HFIL in the English dub to censor the word HELL. They just slightly changed the E and the L lol
idk I feel like every death in this show is kind of ruined by the fact they come back later. Even in the same arc in this case. Kind of ruins the whole sacrifice if you know they will undo it in a few weeks.

@@GabrielLopez-pt2lx Even at the time as it was airing, I felt pretty much nothing because I knew he was coming back. If you didn't know he's coming back, I feel that's not understanding patterns in storytelling. I mean they have so many resurrection mechanics that are kind of shoehorned in as an excuse why people can come back, it's hard to assume they'll stay dead. It's kind of why I am always against that in storytelling. Rez kind of kills the enormity of death and turns it into an inconvenience.
Damn we could have had vegeta in TFS HIFL but he lucked out because buu was a menace that needed to be stopped.

In the original version Vegeta hugged Trunks for almost a whole minute in absolute silence, taking as much time as he had left with his son.
This makes death #2 for Vegeta. One more, and he gets a free sundae!

Sure it's an old trope but... nothing tugs at the heartstrings like an emotionally reserved hardass showing familial love in his last moments, going as far as to sacrifice himself.

There isn't a "Reset Button" for Vegeta this time, though. Even though he died doing the first selfless act he ever did, his sins were too great, and his soul is to be destroyed upon going to hell.
Vegeta's atonement is easily top 3 best moments in DBZ. :) it shows that even someone like Vegeta has someone that he needs to protect.
Too bad they experienced most of it in abridged.
Imagine if they saw Vegeta dying during the Namek saga. This is why I don't like when reactors watch Abridged before the series.

100%. In the original DBZ was x1000 times better than this (I mean the original, no the English version). Kai music is... horrible.
This attack Vegeta used was called "The Final Atonement", it's where Vegeta turns himself into a super nuke and burns through all his energy reserves including his life energy. As the name implies, it's Vegeta's penance for all the sins he's committed in his life. For neglecting his family and all the planets he committed mass genocide on. He's truly sorry for all the pain and suffering he caused.
The attack's name is Final Explosion, FInal Atonement was the name of the episode.
He still went to Hell though.

1. Vegeta's sacrifice is easily the crowning moment of his character
2. Piccolo taking the opportunity to go after Babidi is a fittingly smart move. Even in the event that Vegeta fails, Piccolo knew Buu would be less dangerous without a master to aim his destructive behaviour

For what it’s worth. Hit pause on this and watch the original version of this. Kai does really well on making a lot of the fights better quality but the original dialogue was beyond fantastic

I didn't like it. I mean I enjoy them watching the end of the Buu saga but kai makes everything so cartoonish. The original dub was so well done and gave the whole episode more weight than how kai does.
@@VenomKppI don't know if it's just because I'm nostalgic, but I prefer the Faulconer score over Kai most of the time as well. There are some really cool tracks in Kai, but a lot of the time the music doesn't fit as well.

The dialogue in Kai is much more accurate to the manga than the 90’s Z dub. The 90’s Z dub has tons and tons of translations errors that truly do affect the story being told. It changes character’s personalities to completely change who they are especially Goku. I grew up on the Z dub but if someone wants to watch Z and get the actual story they have to watch subbed but for Kai they can watch dubbed
@talrubin6977 but original English with falconer mix is so much more meaningful... the hells bells followed by the narration is just special. After watching the kai it's something that shud be seen

Vegeta’s sacrifice here is so heartwarming although he didn’t like Earth or the Z fighters they grew him & he was willing to sacrifice his life for the planet & his family. Truly an amazing & inspiring moment

DBZA is a very "insider" type of club. There will come a time when someone sees one of the shirts and completes the saying. Then you will both just nod and everyone else around you will be confused. It will make your day!

I can get being disappointed with Krillin here, but even in-universe other characters told him he should lay low and stay outta the danger here, cause he's a wife and such a young kid - I'd have liked a bit more but it makes sense.
A subtle character bit I do like how Krillin is the one shouting out to Vegeta full of concern as he blows himself up - quite the contrast to how Vegeta's first trip to earth ended, with Krillin grabbing Yajirobe's sword full of anger and despair to kill a defenseless Vegeta, with only Goku stopping him.
The two of them have come far since then ✌
You can tell they have mutual respect for eachother, especially after what they went through on Namek and how Krillin still fights despite his weaknesses

i’m glad you guys have the opportunity to watch this show, and Kai improves on Z in a lot of ways, but scenes like this are DEFINITELY not one of those ways. Kai doesn’t hit anywhere near as hard as the original funimation dub
Yeah, I give Kai credit for giving something refreshed for the newer generation, but nothing can top that OG view from the early 2000s, music and all.

This bittersweet moment is one of, if not just is Vegeta's best moment. It sucks that Vegeta had to die for it, but honestly? I don't think the turning point for such a self-assured, egocentric character could've happened any other way.
But, if it helps, you guys can watch the first batch of clips TeamFourStar did for the Buu Saga (long story there, I'm sure others have touched on it). Since the first batch of clips ends with this very scene, you can go through it spoiler-free!

But I think the Buu Saga could’ve been the tightest and strongest story in the series if it had ended around here.
In this part of the story the dragon balls can only bring back someone only once that’s why they went to namek during Frieza.

after all these years, even knowing all that happens afterwards, I'm still brought to tears, Vegeta is just that Guy.
What is more impressive is that Vegeta did this despite being fully aware that he might go to hell and stop existing unlike Goku, because unlike Goku he is no hero and will not preserve his body and soul in the afterlife. His soul is supposedly going to get cleaned so it can reincarnate into another being and have another chance at life again. His goodbye was truly sincere, because once you are reincarnated you cannot be revived anymore.
Everyone had your reaction after watching that legendary scene, definitely a huge character moment for the Prince of all Saiyans

One thing that was not the same in abridged and in og dragon ball was that the dragon balls could only, in og dragon ball, revive someone once
That is why Goku turned Super Saiyan in Namek, because Krillin died and, as he had been brought back once, he could not be brought again.
That is why Vegeta's sacrifice, among other things, is so meaningful
They mentioned it in Abridged as well. Abridged is the same as DBZ in that respect… True, Krillin couldn’t be wished back then, but then they wished back the people killed by Freeza and that brought back Guru and the Namekian Dragon Balls, which could bring him back.
By this point in original DBZ there are at least a few people wished back twice, although not necessarily by the same dragon… But either way, hadn’t Vegeta only been revived by the Namekian dragon? So even if Shenron counted as the same Shenron after Dende took over and remade him, either Shenron hadn’t been used to wish Vegeta back, so it’s fine, or Porunga can wish people back multiple times, so he’s still fine if they go to New Namek and use their balls… But weren’t they going to wish Goku back after Cell and they only didn’t because he said not to? If they were going to do that, surely the current Shenron could bring back people that at least the old Shenron had brought back to life?
It’s been a while and I may be forgetting details, but I’m pretty sure that there is at least one way that Vegeta could have been wished back at this point, unless something else prevented him from being wished back… Either way, the wishes shouldn’t be a problem, just how easily the wish could be made… So if he couldn’t come back, it wasn’t due to not being able to be brought back by a dragon. Unless I’m forgetting a key detail somewhere.
@@KitsyX No no, you're right. I said it only because I thought that abridged didn't specify that people could only be brought back once. Of course, in og DBZ the dragon balls keep getting upgraded until this is possible at some point.
Another reason I made that comment was also to give more significance to Vegeta's sacrifice, because abridged may have led people who have not watched og DBZ into thinking that the dragon balls can always make up for everything that happens in the show, thus making the death of any kind of meaningless.
Of course, I won't spoil for them when in the DBZ series the dragon balls get upgraded or if other dragon balls can or can't be used, so at the moment some characters, like Vegeta, are dead for sure.

What could Krillin have done?
He would likely have lost even against PuiPui. There isn't a single thing he could have done. He is far weaker than Goten and Trunks are. He hasn't really trained for 7 years now.
Helping against Babidi? He would have been a hindrance.
Krillin still has the Solar Flare and Destructo Disc, as well as some other techniques that could help out in battle outside of just being a strong attack.
Though, with how Piccolo did Babidi in, I guess he didn't need the Destructo Disc. Or any help at all, for that matter.
Vegeta's Final Atonement episode a tear jerker one ya have to feel.
for a while i was sad that you guys only watched abridged (apparently) but now i see youre watching kai and im glad youre getting at least one form of the REAL experience, and that its hitting you the same way it hit all of us
I loved the original dub for this scene, personally. "I'm going to crush you...and throw you into the wind." That hits a lot harder than talking about Buu's regeneration
So far, I felt pretty much every line of dialogue in the Kai version has been subpar - only the pacing has been better, even if Kai DID skip one of my favourite fillers (Gohan's date).
When Krilin screamed Vegeta!!!! All I could hear was: VEGETA NO!!!!! VEGETA YESS!!!!!

Vegeta's sacrifice is one of those scenes that always makes me shed tears.
Another scene from DB that makes me tear up is on GT. Yes, they can say whatever they want about GT, but I'm one of those people who liked it. Hope you react to GT too after the Z series.
the points about Krillin in the discussion makes me think they really should check out cell saga in the orignal Z dub if not the Kai dub because for those of us who actually watched the show and know the true characters of the Z fighters, then they'd have better reference points for these discussions. TFS's DBZA is their comedic take on the series and all though there is some stuff that did happen in the original material in abridged, the dialogue used by TFS does change the context behind some moments especially the moments they cut out. for example: Krillan doing exactly what Bethany wanted him to do, when he along with the other Z fighters stood up against Cell to help Gohan in the final sequence of the battle.

On the upside, you can now watch the DBZA Buu Bits part 1without spoilers. TFS made some short Abridged clips for the Buu Arc and they have them up on their channel now.
So that’s a second time. Vegeta dies one more time he gets a free ice cream sundae.
There is no advancement in the DBZ universe without sacrifice, which is what makes Super the revival that was both needed and deserved.
I'm amazed at how different the tone is from DB Kai vs the Bruce Faulconer version I watched. I'm a fan of the original Faulconer version and think it hits so drastically different with the different music score. They did not cover up the blood either.
I can't wait for you to see how TFS did some of these scenes on their latest contributions.

I can't remember if the Earth Dragon balls were changed but since Vegeta had already died on namek, he would need the namekian dragon balls in order to come back to life because the Earth Dragon balls had a limit of bringing someone back once.

An important thing to keep in mind, is that Vegeta was already wished back to life after Frezia killed him on Namek. So What Vegeta did here is not only final, hes doing it knowing he can't come back. Its truly a self sacrifice.
I hate to break it to you .....Piccolo said, his soul will be cleansed, meaning he can not be wished back, besides the fact, that you can't resurrect someone twice ...

Then the only reason I could think why'd Vegeta make a speech as if it was final is if he believes that his actions at the tournament as well as Buu's revival being what caused Gohans death would convince everyone that he's still evil and thus would not bother wishing him back. Different reasons, but the sentiment of him acknowledging he isn't coming back and sacrificing himself despite that would still follow.

Unfortunately, there's a limit to how many times you can be wished back, and Vegeta reached it already, what makes this even more dramatic.
What are you talking about? Hasn’t Vegeta only died once? Some of them got wished back after dying twice… And Vegeta wasn’t wished back by Shenron either… Not even sure if this Shenron counts as the same Shenron… I forget the exact rules, but weren’t they going to wish Goku back after Cell and Goku said not to, rather than that they couldn’t wish him back? They were going to get Shenron to do that, even though they used Shenron to wish Goku back with him before… Either way, I don’t think the limit on wishes should be a problem, unless I’m forgetting something…
@@KitsyX Vegeta was already revived once and Shenron can't bring back someone for the second time, no matter what dragon did it in the first place. I don't remember what you're saying about Goku, but that can't be right. He got a special permit to come to the tournament because he couldn't be brought back. I think you're talking about the Frieza saga when he refused to be teleported back to Earth with the rest to keep fighting Frieza.
the original dub has an amazing music piece to the Vegeta's sacrifice that KAI abandoned. you may consider rewatch it
