      However, without any functional strength. He could do well in short range of motion lifts where his short legs and short arms had to move the weight in a very small range. However, he got destroyed in the 1977 Strongest Man because it tests functional strength such as, carrying big, odd shaped heavy objects and running or doing repetitions with it. In fact, Ferrigno destroyed him in the car lift despite not being able to deadlift as much. Franco was eliminated early in the car lift since he could not really lift a car (the Pumping Iron lifts were simply bouncing the car up and down so that the shocks give extra boost to get the tires off the ground for a split second).

    • @1845Raven
      @1845Raven 7 років тому +5

      You can watch the old strong man competitions. Ferrigno competed in the very first Wsm and finished 2nd place! --Loosing in a 1 on 1 tug of war final event to a much heavier man. Had the last event been based on strength and not so much on who weighed most, Ferrigno probably would have placed 1st.

      @someguy3186 7 років тому +9

      KLRGT500KR Lol at "functional" strength. Just as having shorter arms is an advantage for lifts like the bench press, being tall is a huge advantage for strongman. The leverages are simply better. That snd taller guys will simply weigh more, another big advantage.

    • @KLRGT500KR
      @KLRGT500KR 7 років тому +3

    But the reason that he was so much more famous than the other lifters of that era was that he could deliver a joke or a line on cue to perfection. Decades later now and you could totally kill 5 or 10 minutes at a boring party with just imitating Arnold movie lines. His performances were memorable. So in addition to looking the part, he could actually play the part as well. This is not to disrespect other lifters, who yes may have been more impressive in their actual feats of strength, but there's a reason Arnold is the most recognized bodybuilder ever in history by the public and it isn't because of the numbers on the plates.

    On the heavy curls with long arms, you mention that the bar has farther to travel. True. But the real disadvantage of long arms is the greater leverage the weight has against the long-armed person's muscle. This is why short-armed guys tend to be much better at pull-ups. Also, strength only increases by a square factor while mass increases as a cube factor as a person's size goes up. This is why an ant can lift many, many times its body weight, but humans cannot. So, it's interesting to see that guys can be about 25% bigger, while only seeing about a 7% strength advantage overall and, sometimes, might even be weaker on some exercises.

    • @scottr397
      @scottr397 4 роки тому

      There's also crazy simian muscle tissue freaks out there. I swear I'm not making it up. Guys that are just crazy strong for their size. You can chalk it up to better CNS activation or perfect muscle/bone insertion or just a much better ratio of type 1 to type 2 muscle fiber but there are guys that are just pound for pound way stronger.

    Anyone who says Arnold was never over 6ft. has not clue what they are talking about. Vince Basille (a stand up honest guy who is respected in the bodybuilding community and I've talked to on forums) measured Arnold in 1969 at 6' 1 1/2" tall. Arnold has clearly lost a few inches which is common especially for lifters who were rather heavy. He is turning 70 and had hip surgery. Similarly, my dad was as 6' and is now about 5'9. My dad's weight ranged from 205 to 240 throughout is older years. Like Arnold, he also had hip surgery. Also, almost all pics of Arnold in a bodybuilding lineup show him towering over people except when Lou Ferrigno who was about 6'5 was on stage.
