Your reviews never let me down, but they do lighten up my pocketbook haha
Knife good. You buy now. Long time
ohh me so…
Standardize on the top lock and instead of switching out locks, start switching out better steels. Raccoon Top Lock with S30V/S35VN/M390? Hell yes.
I couldn’t agree more. The plunge lock needs to die out fast (except perhaps for autos). A button actuated liner lock is by far the best lock there is. Now focus on other things.
14C28N is a great steel.
@@cloakofshadow1 It is! Probably the best all-around budget steel, and more than enough for most EDC use, but it would be nice to have a premium version of this knife design.
As popular as this knife is, ya a premium version would be nice. I was thinking a titanium scaled version.
Agree. Or just buy a Syop, which has the top lock, Elmax, and Ti scales. 😉
Proud to be in the Kettle Momplex 1st Armoured Pie Division. ✊🥧
Boy howdy. Vosteed is just banging the drum this year. Thanks!
Mine is outstanding. I'd possibly buy a premium in it. My question is why isn't everyone, including Spyderco using this. Imagine how much better a PM2, Para 3, or Sage would be with a lock release like this.
I assume legality issues with button operated knives
@@Samael27 that patent is expired. What other legal issue do you think exists? All kinds of people are making button actuated liner and button actuated compression lock knives. Haven't heard of any lawsuits.
Chaparral also.
It's possible that the patent for a compression lock is expired but a patent for the use of a button in combination with a compression lock isn't. Not sure about that though I didn't actually check.
You were the reason I got the reverse iridium and the heist. I love them 😊👍 and this is a cool knife also
I wish some of the Spyderco Compression locks had a threaded hole in the tab, that way people could screw in their own (or aftermarket) "buttons". Which would DRASTICALLY improve the operation of the compression lock. Especially for people who might have joint problems or tendon issues, so they don't have to dig their finger 80% through the spine of the knife to disengage the lock. Even without a button mounted the threaded hole would also add some extra traction on the tab. So a simple and standard M3 2.5mm hole or something would be great. And it's always cool to see what the aftermarket makers do whenever there is a new option or feature, to play with for modifications. And yes I am aware that things like the CME exist, but it would just be much more convenient to use a screw than having to glue something on.
Oh wow that's a genius idea. And ppl who prefer no buttons can just install a plug or pin or something. Kudos to you brother maybe someone will pick up this idea and try it out. If i had the tools I would try drilling into something like a sage 5 lightweight and try it out myself.
You’d have to redesign the whole shape of the compression lock. They’re rectangular, you can’t screw in something rectangular into the compression lock void. Best you could do is screw in something circular, which would have to be narrow enough in diameter to fit in the compression lock void. Which would have to be tiny. No need to reinvent and overly complicate it when 99% of your needs are already met by the CME (although I agree that gluing things to your knives is highly irritating and best avoided.)
Metal complex uploads and I drop what I’m doing to watch, simple life!!!
There is a type of locks where steel is wedged between the blade and the stop pin. These are generally very strong. The only reason the triade lock is the strongest is that these are massive knives. If I make all parts huge, then yeah it gets stronger.
That's not why the Triad Lock is stronger lol
@@metal_complex The Triad Lock wedges steel between the blade and the stop pin from the top. The Super Lock wedges steel from the back. Compression Lock wedges steel from the side. The locking is very similar, only the actuation differs.
@Muhsaft86 www.coldsteel.com/tri-ad-lock/
The way this lock engages is different. The lock itself is certainly robust, but the tension holding it in place is also very strong. The super lock is similar, but not exactly the same. There's a general idea being applied here with all 3 but it's definitely not as simple as "bigger parts"
As a left handed person who owns this knife I find that concern with your hand being over the button to be ludicrous lol. You have to reach so far to see that as a real risk. In a choked up saber grip or hammer grip you have to be trying to disengage it to do so, nothing even close to a natural grip has any chance of disengaging it - at least with my hands. I have a lot of spyderco compression locks with CME buttons on them which are essentially button compression locks and it’s the exact same deal - IMO it’s just not a realistic concern
I have nothing but praise for it. The "for the money" qualifier really isn't needed, it's just a killer knife.
Textured titanium top liner lock raccoon with a premium steel please vosteed! and don’t you dare get rid of the reversible clip like you always seem to do with your premium models!!
Another advantage of a compression lock over a crossbar is it’s very easy to increase the detent by bending in the lock bar a little rather than having to find some really strong omega springs which only some companies seem to provide and only one set with each knife and then having to go through the hassle of installing them.
My raccoon had a slightly light detent so I tuned the lock bar and now it’s amazing
Great vid!
Ooh, I can't wait to see your review/comparison to the Kizer Mini-Grouper.
I already have the cross-bar lock model of the Raccoon but I'm SOOOOO tempted to buy the new 'Top liner-lock" model (if they're ever available...) The Raccoon is SUCH a great design. mine lives on my Bino-harness and I used to to dress part of a deer last year here in N.Idaho. I love 14C28N and the blade/edge geometry is just GREAT.
I think that the variety of lock options is great and that more companies should start doing the same. That being said, it would be awesome to have a magnacut or even s35vn option!
I bought one as soon as I saw his unboxing. I hope they come out with versions with titanium scales and a thumbhole. Maybe another model with a longer blade!
Been wanting one
I have a crossbar lock version of the raccoon and I love it
I just ordered this EXACT knife (waited for the color to come back in stock) last night in part to praise from you and Jerad. I’m considering it a gateway to the Psyop - I wanted to try the lock before I put the $ in.
The psyop is very nice except for that choil.
Keep push'n the limits Vosteed!
And there it is - the new scale!
I ordered mine, and i might buy another when they use a super steel im interested in using but I'm looking forward to using it, making it dull and having a good steel to practice my sharpening skills on. Cost me an extra $175 bucks though because I picked up a shot show 24 Osborne in s90v, was a decent price and i dont have any knives with red blades so why not
It's actually pretty crazy how badly Spyderco dropped the ball by only making the Smock as a button compression lock.
Ah yes, the year of whatever lock is on the raccoon.
resident lefty. Have a blue one. It's great.
I got the green micarta with gold thumb studs. Don’t have any hair left on my arms and legs now. 😂
1000 pie machine gun. Best line of the video
One minor bizarre flaw, is the not so deep deep carry clip without any technical reason.
It looks like Vosteed does this on a regular basis and that sad imho.
Qq what is best top 2 places to buy second hand knives?
This is in my price range👍👍
I would like to know what you recommend for sharpening knives?
I use a KME but any guided system is great
In essentially all industries, tests of durability and safety go beyond the realm of normal use of the product. For that reason I truly don't believe a few hard spine whacks is a meaningless test. The stakes are very high when it comes to a knife closing on your finger. If a knife can withstand spine whacks, it gives me confidence that I'll be able to count to 10 after using the knife normally.
I said something positive about you in the Kunwu group on FB, and said I didn't understand people badmouthing you. Sergio replied "What did [name redacted] do now." Haha.
LOL
I want to see other makers copy Spyderco and make the compression lock without the button. No button makes accidental opening almost impossible. That makes it the safest lock around, in my opinion.
Which one would you recommend more for me to buy this one or this other knife? CJRB Pyrite-Light J1945 AR-RPM9 Steel Blade FRN Handle Folding Knives which one is better
This one. Blade steel is significantly better, lock is much stronger. Only the Pyrite Light if you want a very light knife.
The Racoon is definitely a more sturdy (premium) knife for sure. However both are good knives. If money is an issue, the CJRB is the way to go. Just about get 2 CJRBs for the cost of one Racoon. If you use the knife alot I'd go with Racoon. Hope this helps.
Im bought so far on them crossbar locks they seem pretty safe you turned me into a fan of the crossbar locks
I approve this spine whack
Bring this lock to a bunch of other designs please! Id be all over a Wharncliffe version.
Will it come in the sheepsfoot you think?😊
appreciate the caveman recap really make brain know what saying
You're the best, and I appreciate your videos, and you're a cool Fellar 😄👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Axis Lock > Compression Lock, because the Axis Lock is left hand friendly.
The compression lock is pretty easy for lefties to use
Ehhhh I dont know that id go that far. I have multiple compression lock knives and have no issues as a lefty. Id also rather have a true detent vs axis locks, although i like them quite a bit also
Is this one in the video ever in stock? Kinda lame
It's new give it some time for the hype to die down
The lock on this knife sucks. It’s screwed me several times
the thought of you enraging redditors is oddly entertaining.
There are easily a few hundred of them. The funniest part is that the tone used There suggests they really believe they are the authority.
200 - 300 redditors. 🤣🤣🤣
Please Stop! Stop talking with your hands! You bounce the knife up and down and throw everything out of focus! I'm afraid you're going to give me epilepsy!🙏🙏✋
Thanks
