Well, if you're interested in buying the new CX78 controller and Bently Bears cart you might as well just buy the whole system since you're more than half way there anyway!

If Atari had a proper road map for these releases, they probably should have made the 2600+ only compatible with 2600 cartridges. That way there would have been more incentive for people to buy both systems.

My grandparents got my older siblings a 7800 instead of a NES. I grew up playing the vast library of 2600 games on that 7800 and only learned later that I was actually playing them backwards compatible. So this is actually more nostalgic for me than a 2600 remake, but no it was definitely not on my bingo card either lmao.

Atari has confirmed there are internal hardware changes- it's not 100% the same as the 2600+

I am aware there would be newer firmware and there may be some internal hardware changes, but the basic functionality of the 7800+ from what I can see, is still the same as the 2600+ (I am more than willing to stand corrected if I am shown new information that suggests otherwise!)

The internal change is wireless controller support.

It sure sounds promising. I wonder if it'll be compatible with my Retro HQ Game Drive

My question is: why bother? The atari game station pro was $47 shipped (refurbed) and you can add all 7800 titles.

Game Station Pro also includes + 5200 games + 2600 games with 2 wireless retro sticks that include built in Paddles and 200 built in Games. You can add any Atari (even Sega Genesis) ROMs you want to the Game Station Pro.
Since the 7800+ doesn't have FPGA hardware (which mimics original hardware) it's just another emulation box (and not the best one) that plays Cartridges.
It's difficult to understand who this is for, outside of people that already own a 7800 cartridge collection and don't already own the 2600+ or Game Station Pro.
An FPGA version of Atari HW would've been amazing and justified buying another Atari retro console, but they failed. As is, it's just another cash grab to fund the company.
All things considered; the Atari Game Station Pro is still the Best Atari themed retro emulation console out there.

I do like the fact they're supporting Indie developers by releasing some of their games to the public. Games like Bentley Bear deserve some publicity.

The 7800+ has a pause button! This was a pretty cool feature over the 2600 back in the day, lol. It looks like the 7800+ will have the same trick. I also know from the Atari Age forums that they are improving the cartridge port. Same with newer 2600+ consoles. Some of those 40+ year old games can be finicky when reading. I am excited we will get official firmware update for the 2600+!

I'm sure I read the new firmware for the 2600+ will also have a pause feature.

Can it pause games that aren't designed to pause? That would be a nice upgrade.

I guess if you are an Atari Purist, a 7800+ system that plays 2600 games is more authentic to the original. As opposed to a 2600+ which plays 7800 games. Which the original could never do. It does feel a bit weird popping a 7800 cart into a 2600+ system and having it work

again my composite atari 7800 fine with my trackball and nes style controller. Frenzy and Bezerk is together on atariage for 35 bucks total . Bently Bear is my only interest

Will this be available in the UK?

But you can play the Bentley Bear game on the 2600+ so there's no real difference, is there?

Answer no because it's running Stella emulator. A free program and developer gets no credit
