I don't know how to express this well in English, but Charles Spencer owned that funeral. He owned it. He was spectacular in his support for her sister.
Then he should've given her a sanctuary at her ancestral home when she asked

From what Prince Harry has stated, to this very day, he is still very scarred after not only losing his mother like that, but having to walk behind her coffin in front of millions of people w/o shedding a tear. Poor kid, really.
Really, why nobody thought of that...It was a strength way beyond what ought to have been expected, to say the least.
@@judyweeks1480 As far as the Royal Family is concerned, it was a call to duty. I shrug my shoulders. I have read on more than one occasion, however, that both Prince William and Prince Harry broke down in tears when Elton John sang "Goodbye England's Rose".
@@TheRanaro Well, sometimes extenuating circumstances should allow for relief from a call to duty especially when children are involved. I'm sure they broke into tears many times...
They shouldn’t have made them do that. That is way beyond what a human, let alone young boys should have to deal with. It’s ridiculous. Their dad should have realized it! They didn’t owe that to the public!
At the end of the day all kids who lose a parent go through the same no matter how many people are watching. But other kids often lose their home income school etc with the parent....
Diana’s funeral is probably the most dramatic thing I have ever seen. The depth of sorrow and grief, the disbelief, the simmering anger towards the royals, and the feeling of helplessness for her two boys, who have both grown into fine young men with families of their own, and very much in the mould of their mother.

Its one of the most dreadful and compelling stories lines with the world watching as it unfolded. However, the enormous impact was on the her sons...to grieve in private is one thing...but to grieve in front of millions is another...

I was so moved by Charles Spencer's eulogy; and applauded his making the point that no royal title could add or detract from her. I'm so sorry for all the pain, but be assured, there was equal pain felt by the millions of us who loved and lost her. You did well.

Diana’s funeral I will never ever forget. The eulogy that was told by her brother Charles spoke about his sister in an open and honest way which he could do. He said what other people thought and I admire him for that. I still think that the truth will come out eventually

William too, but for better or worse, this is what the British do at funerals. It's very common to have the family or other close loved ones follow the hearse walking in this manner. That's what a lot of people don't understand - they think the royals did this out of nowhere, but it's what any British son might do at their mother's funeral. Not saying that makes it the right choice, just saying it does make it slightly less cold in my view. They weren't doing it from a place of wanting the boys on show but rather out of the feeling that they may regret not doing for their mother what sons typically would do in normal circumstances.

I've been to Ireland the past two Christmases & this past New Year's and was meant to go this year too but COVID happened so Americans are unwelcome to Ireland at this moment! We spent Christmas at Ashford Castle and also explored Dublin. My family's from Ireland in part so I can't wait to go explore more! Heavily from County Cork but a lot of others as well, mostly along the western coast which of course is where the Famine hit hardest so it makes sense that's where people left from the most. County Galway, Limerick, Mayo, Kerry, and one up north as well but still part of the Republic. Whereabouts are you from?

@@michellebaker6302 I get your point, but this funeral wasn't normal. For one thing, kids ususally are older when losing a parent. But most importantly, they don't normally walk for half an hour through a sea of thousands of people, cameras broadcasting them to billions more. Imagine how many people have been able to scrutinize their faces in those moments, since it's on tape. They should have been spared that.

No Brother or son that I know of, could have pressed on as you did that day. Your sister would have been so proud & grateful to you, for your strength and the care of her son’s. You are by no means common, but true royalty, noble and virtuous. In a world, where common sense is rare. I am deeply saddened for you & your family, for the loss of your beautiful sister Diana. I can not express in words my greatest sympathies for you as well as your family. I wish for you love and peace, that transcends time and space. I have no doubt that one day you will be reunited, with your sister in heaven. In heaven I imagine Diana with a crown of jewels around her head, and a Mansion so big. Filled with peace and love for all she gave to this world, Her Mansion will be surrounded in a sea of flowers similar to the sea of flowers around the palace after her passing. I think they did but the Cameras were not to be directly pointed at the Families during the service and the Duke of Edinburgh walked with the Boys as extra support. They did well. It's a difficult one as the Royals do the Stuff Upper Lip thing too well.

I guess people think you have to know a person personally to mourn their death, but you don't, she was a very much loved world wide public figure. A fabulous woman who got a raw deal with Charles.

One of the saddest days in British history, if not the saddest.
I remember going into the town centre to do a bit of shopping. Normally my wife would have done it but she was literally heart broken sat in front of the TV with a box of tissues on her lap. When I came to the main high street I was dumbfounded by what I saw. This street was usually mad busy with activity but now it looked like a static photograph. All the cars, busses and taxis were completely still as though frozen in time, and there was a strange quietness in the air as people all stood in silence with their heads down.
Something of the spirit of Britain died that day and I don't think it ever came back. To those who say it was mass hysteria I say they either don't know what they are talking about or they have a heart of stone. OK so people did not know Diana personally, and the majority had never even met her, but she was our princess. We grew up with her. At least my generation did. I was in my early teens when Charles and Diana announced their engagement and showed off that blue sapphire and diamond engagement ring. Showing the world they were n love: "Whatever 'in-love' means". As our own life journey progressed we followed along with the lives of Charles and Diana. Henry VIII killed his wives because they could not provide him with a son and heir, Diana provided two. All Diana wanted was to be loved. She was a sensitive soul in a cruel world and in the end was crucified. Charles Spencer's speech that day was given to him through the hearts and minds of millions of people sending him their love and thoughts. What he said captured what everyone was thinking and feeling that day. As for myself, I held back for as long as I could. But then, as I watched the hearse carrying the dead body of our princess, driving through the streets of London, I saw a lady throw a bouquet of flowers which it landed on top of the vehicle. And as she through them she let out a scream; "Diana!" Something about that action and that scream caused something inside me to snap. Suddenly, I lost the feeling in my legs and I cried my heart out. I don't think I will ever see or experience anything like that ever again.
What you've said there very succinctly sums up the feeling in Britain at that time and how most of us felt. I was in that crowd as her coffin came down The Mall with her Sons walking behind, I travelled to work on the Underground the day after she was killed, and felt the unprecedented sombre mood that pervaded everything, and I went and added to that incredible carpet of flowers outside Kensington Palace. I also remember the woman you mentioned, throwing flowers onto the coffin, and her despairing cry. These are images that will be forever etched in my memory, images that contributed to something unlike anything that had ever been experienced before, or since. As you suggested, it was as if the Sun went behind a cloud the day Diana died, and never quite came out again.
I can't add anymore to this what you have written is exactly what I felt what I saw. She has left her mark which was much bigger than her title that will never be erased.

If someone had asked to me the day before; How would you feel if Diana died tomorrow? If Im honest I probably would have said something like; Well it would be sad but I would not be hear broken.
It shows clearly that we can never know how much we value something until it is gone. Even this very day, if I start thinking back to that awful day my heart feels heavy and eyes fill up. Take care my dear fellow.
The rest of the world cried with the people of Britain 🇬🇧 when Princess Diana died.
As an American, I will also remember that day as long as I live. I loved that young girl too and had so hoped they would live a wonderful life together. Her death was a terrible tragedy. American's mourned her loss too. Her son's are her legacy. She is gone but not forgotten. And, when I hear Elton John's song that he dedicated to Diana it always brings me to tears all these years later.
Bittersweet feelings, really. He had a complicated relationship with her, as we all do with our siblings. He obviously loved her, but he also forbade her from staying at the family estate. Sometimes they didn't speak for months. Nobody expects a premature death, somehow we feel we'll make it right at the end. As difficult as she was, I wish more people had shown her compassion too. I hope Earl Spencer has made peace with his complicated relationship with his sister.

Nothing is as traumatic as getting that awful call telling you a loved one is dead. It stays with you forever.
Reminds of my cousin who told me how much she cared but after my father's death when I was loosing my home made herself very scarce. That really is painful.
In all my years, I never noticed that Diana’s brother has her same mannerisms and expressions. If I concentrate on his eyes, it’s overwhelming. He also has big blue eyes and they are discerning like Diana’s. I never noticed this before and it’s beautiful. Nature & nurture.

William and Harry didn't wabt to walk behind the coffin but Prince Philip convinced them 2. U can see on their faces they didnt want to.
I remember that they were given a choice and were convinced by Prince Philip (as he himself had to do similar things as a child after losing family members). If William said yes, then Harry would have agreed too. And William pretty much had to do it. The only way to have avoided this would have been not to ask the children.

Seriously what I felt with my dad being burried in the noon of 31st of December because we don't want him to worry about us in the new year, we walked more than an hour, everyone is happy everyone is laughing and I felt so helpless that this is the world. The world never bow to other grief over the time they are to be happy and they are privileged to have that happiness.
That is more traumatizing for me than the millions of people, to see the smile on the strangers faces on the yuletide season seeing them as we walk, the joy that day promises then over the next year.
And that next year I don't have a father, and the hardest part nobody wanted to make it more sad for the relatives so no one spoke for the farewell only me. All I could say is:
"Me and behalf of my family is thankful that you all came, we all knew in this time of the year have but it is what it is, my father is dead"
I can't say anything but to pound it on my head, and it breaks my heart till this day.
The vast majority of Brits do this at funerals. Royals also do it historically. They were not forced but chose it, which both have said publicly. Kinda harsh to say they chose wrong. It's their mother, their choice.
He did an Amazing job delivering that speech! Those words were what the whole world was feeling that's why everyone clapped so loudly inside the church and outside too! Everyone loved Diana because she spoke the truth. It must be a Spencer trait. The Windsor's could learn a thing or too about that! RIP Diana!

A piece of my heart left with her. Now her sons and their families have been filling that missing piece. Princess Diana's spirit lives on not only in her boys' lives and also all of us who cheered and supported her.

I didn’t realize this until recently, when Diana was going through the her divorce, she called her brother and asked could she come back home to live for a while, to get away from all the press. He refused, saying it would cause too many interruptions to him and his family. Had he not been so selfish, she might still be here today. That must be a heavy burden to carry everyday. Knowing you could have done way more.
He has spoken out about it, he does regret it. It probably was just not possible on short notice. The house she asked for was not available, the security was not provided by the royal family, it would have been a huge operation, but in hindsight it is easy to say, that he should have received her at their family estate. That’s the reason she was with Dodi Al Fayed, his father could provide the security. Mohamed El Fayed never realized he could lose his son in the process. Does anyone realize Charles Spencer would have put his family and tenants in danger? Diana was larger then life. It is a shame the royal family or the British secret services didn’t protect her. She was a sitting duck. And I will always wonder if she was killed on purpose. She certainly lost protection on purpose. The whole royal institution is misogynous even though the queen is a woman herself. Diana was à walking womb. She had served her purpose. No one thought about her being a mother to the heir of the throne. Everybody enjoyed seeing her portrait, no one paid the price but Diana and those close to her and those near her in that car in Paris, in the tunnel at Pont de L’Alma. It infuriates millions globally that it made Charles and Camilla’s happiness in the end. It makes you wonder. The was the sacrificial lamb as she expressed it herself. A woman’s role, an outrage to be honest. She wasn’t allowed to be human. So we made an angel out of her.

The way he describes the way he was feeling throughout the mourning processes. It’s so hard for me to say how I feel. I just say “idk, it’s so hard to explain what I’m feeling.” He puts so much detail. I can legit feel what he felt and I haven’t lost any of my siblings. I feel for him. I wish he didn’t lose his sister.

Having children now and seeing those young boys walking behind their mother in front of millions. On top of their sadness of loosing their mother, they had to entertain the world and keep a straight face.

But that is not what Diana asked for.
On the estate, there are houses, fields, forests and villages. Diana wanted a particular large historic farmhouse which had a family in it that was farming the land around it. The Earl said no.

She forgot and they got over it before she died. No point if she died in Paris in a car with her man at the time.

I wish I could find the video or whatever it was I had seen maybe seven years ago where someone... don't know why sometimes I think it was Lady Annabelle (who had Annabel's in London ) but it was someone very popular who on Sundays usually had open house for brunch and a lot of the women would show up... sometimes Diana also .
But somebody was talking about how when Diana would be there she would sort of be a bummer and let people know how depressed she was and they made it sound as if she went there to seek attention rather than hanging out with the ladies and having a lovely time.... I vaguely recall the words neurotic and manipulative being used and implying she had always sort of been like that .
Yes I know she and Charles both were not angels... when I was little my much older sister would always talk about Charles and she mentioned Camila .

The Earl's speech is one I shall never forget. I still hear him speaking those poignant but eloquent and loving words. I am glad he was also frank. He lost his beautiful sister because of the selfish, manipulative and very destructive behavior of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. Diana lost her life. William and Harry lost their beloved mother. Charles married Camilla and they lived happily ever after. 🤮 What an evil story.

Diana asked Charles Spencer if she could come and stay at Althorp during a difficult time for her. The estate is huge and he wouldn't necessarily have known she was there, but he refused on the grounds there "might be crowds". She would be alive today if he had allowed it.

I was upset with Diana's brother for a very long time for not allowing his sister to stay at the family estate when she needed him and her ancestral home for comfort and protection, she just wanted that sense of family that she hoped she would receive from him her brother, but he turned her away because he didn't want the hassle of the photographers scrambling about on His estate! That made me very sad for Diana and her boys as well, this is quit possibly the reason he dose not see his nephews much! She might be alive today if he would have shown a little compassion for her...I wonder if this ever crosses his mind!?!

I lost my 26 year old son 5 years ago, if I had known I would just have him for 26 years when he was born, can you really begin to imagine how you would behave around someone that you know is going to die young .... well you see, it’s the not knowing that’s the awful thing you have to live with. People divorce all the time, perhaps Diana should have lived up to her responsibility of being the mother of the future king, when making her choices in forging her life as a single woman again.
Would you want the media circus around your children 24/7? And the house Diana wanted on the estate was a large one that had a tenant famer and his wife and children living there. The Early would have had to evict them. They had been there for years and were farming the land that went with the house. Two sides to every story.......

Delivering a eulogy is tough. As someone who delivered a eulogy myself, I wouldn’t say the feeling he had was weird at all. It’s natural he would feel the way he did and he had to do and say what needed to be said. I know Princess Diana’s heart and soul is with her family forever. Brother, sisters, her sons.

Charles eulogy for his Beloved Sister , Diana Our Queen Of Hearts, was a beautiful honest and loving tribute to her , No one could have expressed who she was and the truth of her and her life as he did. The sadness and the trauma her sons would have felt is beyond comprehension. I , like Millions upon millions loved her and her two boys so much as she was Such a Special Human being and the love for her extended to her children, I sobbed for her life being cut short and for Harry and William when I watched her funeral and still cry when I see parts of it again on utube, I believe She would have greatly approved of Charles her Brothers words as Diana was such an open courageous Women, She let the world see her truth and She touched all hearts showing her vulnerability. She will always be Remembered and Loved ❤
