  • In this video, I'm swatching a set of gansai watercolours from Choosing Keeping - a beautiful stationery store in central London.
The set includes 20 non-toxic paints which are made in Japan. Gelatine glue is used as the binder so these watercolours aren't vegetarian friendly. Except for the name of the paint and a short description (used in this video) on the store's website, there's no other information available about these paints.
I found that I needed to use a different mindset when swatching these paints - they didn't flow on the page as easily as traditional watercolours and I needed to use more water to keep them going. I added some water to the pans after a few swatches to make the process easier.
The colours in this set work well with each other which is great as no colour mixing is required to create a cohesive palette. Once dry, the colours will lose the saturation slightly which is normal for watercolours.
I hope you enjoy the video 🙂

These paints look so juicy, creamy, and vibrant! Also the brush seems so soft! Thanks for sharing!

Is it the synthetic brush you used? Do you like it? Looks very soft in the video x

It’s a Daler Rowney sable brush, size 10. If you’re after a soft synthetic brush, it might be worth checking out Princeton Neptune brushes, I have one of their round brushes, it’s nice and soft ❤️

Interesting, I have the Princeton Neptune brushes and find them a bit coarse!
Was just asking as clicking on the link you provided gave a very good price for sable!
Sadly, struggling to find them over here (US).
      Thanks again for sharing!

That’s interesting, I haven’t thought of comparing the Neptune and Daler-Rowney brushes. Now I have to 😄 I think these particular Daler Rowney brushes might have been discontinued (hence the price) as they now sell a range of synthetic brushes

OMG is Gunjou genuine lapis or azurite??!?

I believe Gunjou is made from azurite. There are no specific pigment information available for this set, however the seller’s website states Gunjou refers to azurite, not lapis.

@@ps.6023 This set is from an art store called Choosing Keeping and I'm not sure who the actual maker of these paints is.

I now know what you mean. Gansai refers to a type of watercolours, in this case specific to the Japanese tradition. I’m not sure if you’ll find something like Gunjou anywhere else, but I’m aware that there’s another brand Kissho that makes gansai watercolours. If no luck, you might have to buy a set from Choosing Keeping containing this colour 😬
