Seriously you are the BEST teacher on the web. No one has ever explained that the bar leans R or L and that is how you know which one you are doing. I might actually remember this now. But if not, I know where to come to find out.
First time I’m getting it so I can quit watching videos every time a pattern calls for a M1R or M1L. I’ve subscribed to watch other videos you’ve made. Loved it!!!
5 years since you've posted this but i just wanted to say thank you for such a clear tutorial - its the only one that really showed me how it works and how to remember it!
Thank you for not just showing how to do it but explaining it doesn’t matter how you get it on the needle as long as it’s leaning the correct direction on the left needle and you knit it through the back that’s all that matters!!! I’m confident I will remember this without having to look it up every single time. Thank you thank you !!!!
I have been crocheting for over 30 years but knitting has never been my forte. After hours of videos you are the first who explained that the bars need to “lean” in the direction you want them to go. Thank you so much for the simple and awesome explanation. I know who I’ll be going to next time I get stuck ❤️
Thank you so much for making this video. I am knitting in the round for the first time and M1L and M1R just was not clicking for me with the patter instructions. Your video is so clear and foolproof. thanks.
Picked up a WIP with M1R from a few years ago and couldn’t remember how to do it. Tried and made mistakes with the Make1. Looked for how to‘s, got more confused. You not only explained it with the yarn on the right AND left hand (I’m team left hand, many YT creators are not), you also explained how NOT to do it so now I know why there are holes (yarn overs) in my knitting. This is just the best tutorial! Now I gotta unravel those few rows and then I’ll restart with confidence! Thank you!
There is a difference between an instructor and a teacher. You, my lady, are a teacher!! You explain the little things between the m1l and m1r so we will remember the difference. Thank you so much! (I usually don't comment on videos, but I had to on this one!) And I subscribed to your channel.
My heart is smiling, Michele, thank you! ❤️ I'm so happy that that you've subscribed and I hope you also join me on Facebook (same name), this is a supportive and stress-free forum filled with knitters of every level.
This is the first of your videos I've seen. I've done both M1R and M1L before, but I often need to be reminded between projects. You are the first one to point out the bar leaning to the R or the L. Thanks a bunch!
I have been watching other UA-cam videos on this over and over again. I found yours and your instructions are brilliant. I finally understand it. Thank you. You are wonderfully detailed and easy to follow. I have just subscribed.
I am thrilled to be, Seeing it done compared to reading the pattern then studying the instructional to use and work with as you go, which this is confirming the proper procedure used in styling a shawl that made the lettering and structure to the shaping from wrong side with garter stitch on one color and stockinette on the other color. Thank you! Love your close up, lighing and very easy voice to listen to as you demenstrate.
Welcome back to knitting, Janet! I also have a Facebook page (same name), it's full of knitters at every level and we love to help new (and returning) knitters; join us! ❤️
My go to videos when I’m struggling to learn something new. Always makes everything so clear. Sometimes one hand is more handy than the other, lol so true.
Thanks very much for your tutorial. In all the other videos I've seen, they show the M1 by knitting from the back, whereas here, when picked up correctly, I see you can knit the stitch from the front! That's great to know.
Great video. Your instructions are crystal clear. I now understand this increase stitch. Explanation of the bar between stitches and which way it should lean was a big help. Have never heard that before. Thank you so very much.
Thank You!!! I have watched so many videos trying to make sense of these 2 stitches and you are the first one that has explained it to where I can understand it. Thank You Again! 😄
Thank you for your clear concise directions on how to make one right and left!! I am knitting my first jumper as I need to know how to do theses stitches correctly! ❤❤
This is the BEST explanation I have ever seen! I constantly forgot how to make them but you explained the „why“ behind it. Now it all makes sense and will stick forever. Thank you so much!
Thank you for your simple. explanation. of a make one right and left after weeks of trying to figure it out on my own. When I finally found your video, you were precise.
I've just watched about a dozen videos to learn how to M1L & M1R and by far your video has been the most helpful. Clear concise and a great wee lesson....it really assisted me when you showed that the bar should lean in the direction of the M1. Thank you so much for sharing 🧶❤
Thank you! Best explanation and demonstration!! I was confused cause some instructions say use right needle and some said left but you showed how it could be done starting with either one
Thank you so much for a clear and concise explanation for making one right and left. I have watched a few other videos, but your explanation made it very clear as to what happens to the stitch and the orientation. I am a big fan of your channel.
Thank you, Suzanne! I've been avoiding M1L and M1R because I just didn't understand how to do them. I've watched many videos and even took a class from Michelle Hunter.. You finally explained it in a way I could understand. I've been making holes instead of stitches and now I know why. THank you, thank you. Heather
Thanks so much! I'm and expert crocheter, but a beginner knitter. Never would have figured this one out on my own. Thanks for showing the M1 stitch SLOWLY! I watched a few others but they went so fast I couln't really tell where they where pulling a stitch up. I will definitely be referencing you site again, as I continue to take on more knitting challenges. Cables..... Yuck! Same for 'knitting in the round" with double pointed needles. That is just CRAZY talk! :)
Very informative video. Helped me understand the technique that had me stumped. I had watched one video before yours, but this one had so much more detail. Thank you.
Thank very much for your very clear video and audio. I've avoided many beautiful patterns because I was intimidated by M1R/M1L. Now I'll dive in and practice until I'm comfortable with 6-8 inches of success; then on to the shawl I'm so interested in making. Your explanation is absolutely the best!
Thank you for the clear explanation. I’m always confused and unsure whether I’m doing it correctly. Due to your explanation now I’m able to check if I’m right and correct it if necessary.
That was great. You never rush with your tutorials and it's so well explained. Love your soft voice. Close-up is excellent. The direction of the bar is so important and knitting into the back or the front makes the difference. Once again I learnt something new. Got an idea. This is a genius method for toe up socks. I always increased into the front and back of the same stitch. Thanks for sharing and caring. 👍👍👍
Thank you so much! This is very easy to follow and thank you for the tips on how to check what you actually did do (leaning left/right after the fact).
Thank you. You are amazing. I’ve watched this so many times with different teachers but it’s the first time I’ve heard anyone say the bar will lean left or right. This is of course a no brainier, but I don’t think I’ll ever forget which is left and which is right again.
Thank you, Suzanne. Another great instruction. I was trying to do M1R in a sweater, and the written instructions seemed wrong and left a hole. This gave me the correct method.
Excellent video, as always. The explanation that in a right M1 the bar is leaning to the right (and to the left in M1L) made all the difference to me in remembering how to do it. Personally - perhaps because I am an English-style knitter, I find it easier to pick up with the right needle and then transfer it to the left.
Hi Leila, thanks so much for watching and for the feedback! Sometimes it is just the smallest things that makes a big difference. The more knowledge we have, the more options to find what works best. ❤️
Best explanation of M1R and M1L I’ve ever seen! I kept getting holes in my knitting when using this technique and your explanation has eliminated that issue for me.
Excellent explanation! Thank you for this video. I've always had a hard time remembering which one leans to right and/or left but now I know how to tell the difference. Rachel S.
This is an excellent demonstration. I recently purchased a download pattern for a bias scarf that I didn't realize used this increase. I'm not really a fan of it as I have heard it's a tight increase but I'm going to try it. Thank you for your demonstration.
Thank you! I hope you have chosen to subscribe to my channel and that you will share my videos on your social media groups such as FB, Ravelry, Pinterest, Reddit, etc. Happy knitting, Suzanne.
That makes so much sense! Thank you for explaining the WHY in addition to the HOW. It really helps me become a better knitter.
Wonderful vanilla beurrehaus! Happy Knitting.

I have looked at a zillion vidoes of M1 and this is the first one that makes sense, you almost make it look easy
Thank you so much for sharing your feedback, Nan! With a bit of practice, I believe you will find it will become easy. 😊
Seriously you are the BEST teacher on the web. No one has ever explained that the bar leans R or L and that is how you know which one you are doing. I might actually remember this now. But if not, I know where to come to find out.
Wonderful, Dorothy, I'm here when you need me! ❤️
So many other videos failed to help me grasp this technique. You nailed it. Thank you!
Great to hear, Rachel! You are so welcome! 😊

right, i never could remember it
Been doing this wrong forever, your video is a game changer for me. Thank you ❤
Thanks for showing both methods of picking up the bar. Others don't show that. Very clear instructions..........
Thank you! Happy Knitting!

I’m glad it clicked for you!
I just saw 3 videos on m1 and without a doubt yours was the best. Thank you for sharing. I finally understand.
Thank you so much. I hope you have become one of my subscribers. Happy knitting.
I'm so glad your videos are still here to help an "old" new knitter along. Thank you.
Thanks so much, Connie! There is always something new to learn!
Thank you! You're so easy to follow. I like the focus on instruction rather than entertainment. Your teaching style matches my learning style.

You are so welcome, Rebecca! I appreciate your kind feedback!!
Thank you! I have been knitting for 67 years (Gramma taught me when I was four!) and this is the best explanation of this that I have ever seen! 🧶
I watched several M1R videos and your was definitely the clearest.
Good teacher! Thank you. You do not talk too much and you make it easy to follow you. Very good!
Thank you so much! Happy knitting.
