Wow, I'm incredibly grateful that my story of moving + thriving abroad has inspired so many beautiful souls to take the leap and soar. It's been a year since I made this video and it feels quite timely to reflect on this due to the global crisis we're in. If you're pondering on whether you should move, let this be your message that this is your time to do just that.
I've been connecting with a few expats on this end of the world and I'm always happy to help provide resources to help support people's need to find a sense of belonging within a new community. I host meditation sessions for women of colour through 'Brown Girl Bloom' and often women create new lifelong bonds after the sessions. Come join in if Perth, Western Australia is on your radar (instagram.com/browngirlbloom/)
Lastly, I will be making more 'Life in Australia vlogs' to take everyone on a journey of what day-to-day life is like for me as an African-American woman living in Western Australia. I'm active (+ incredibly passionate) in the wellness space, Aboriginal community and African Australian community, so I'm excited to share some authentic stories with everyone.
Here's to the season of blooming in all of our glory 🌻

What a beautiful human you are , obviously beautiful on the outside but your attitude plus brave to move away from all you know..
Most Aussies really like and respect Black Americans , it's a generalized, we probably see alot of those positive attributes, maybe that us stereotyping but hopefully that's a positive for you ..
It still comes down to attitude , character and how you view each experience , skin colour or origin won't matter , it is about who you are..I have two Black American friends , just plain out nice people , great manners , get involved locally and share conversations about both countries , we have no PC , we speak honestly and respectfully and become great mates..
I am glad your experience has been positive , my wife is not caucasian and a migrant , her experience has been mostly positive , like any country , you may get one or two just won't like you , I have experienced it as a white in other countries , you may experience it here or elsewhere..
Anyway , you bring value to our country , a great attitude , welcome and I hope you live the country as most Aussies will be very excepting..
If people stare at you , it may be because of beauty but often out of interest as well , as I found travelling into my wife's country , mostly it was positive..
      Love your post

I visited Australia this year for a few months and fell in love with being there to where I just knew that I found the peace that I was looking for. I knew I wanted to move there , it’s been hard figuring out where I fit . Especially because I graduate this upcoming May. This has inspired me so much though to take that leap of faith in that direction. I’ve been looking for my reason and finding your channel has given me so much hope in this journey again!

Peter Hardy I reread your comment and I deleted my comment and I wanted to say that I’m sorry for what I said. It’s just here in America it’s just black ppl and liberals are really sensitive about how the way things are. Just like cops killing blacks for no reason. Ig it was how the way it was said at the beginning and I have to understand that in Australia ppl are laid back. But here in America ppl can say what you have comment and be sarcastic about it, trust me I live in a racist area so ig when I went at you I just didn’t take it lightly. But after reading it again and again i was saying to myself is he being sarcastic or not. But after you comment back you wasn’t and I wanted to say I’m deeply sorry. Ig I’m not used to how Australians talk:( But if somebody in America said what you said it can come off as sarcasm and racist.

"... now you're living with intent." Those words are soooo powerful, and I wish I'd known when young that I could do that. It's such an important realisation to have while young enough to capitalise on that intent, rather than the intent of some soulless organisation. You became wise while young because you took a giant leap into the unknown. Inspiring stuff.

Brisbane or South East Queensland is the best place to live in Australia. The beaches are beautiful, the houses are beautiful and affordable when compared with Sydney and Melbourne. And the beaches on the Sunshine and Gold Coast are world renowned. It is also good to hear positive stories about Australia from people of colour as Australians are very welcoming. One only tends to hear the negatives. Perth is great but so isolated. Good luck with your life.

Hi Valery, thank you for your video! This senior, white, Australian woman needed to hear your story today, to remind me of some issues in my life that I address and need to address again at this particular time. Sometimes, over many decades of life, things can get put aside by unavoidable life events and then stay put aside, responsibilities can be unavoidable, and we can lose touch with the the things we need to maintain our sense of self, so we need a conscious recommitment to the most important things in our personal inner life. They're crossroad times, and I'm at one of them now, so I appreciate your message and reminder. Life can't always be joy, as we all know, things happen out there in the wider world, and then there are emergencies, accidents, and at my age it's working at maintaining body, mind and soul more purposefully as well. So, I am on that journey of working out, once again, how I live my life on a daily basis so that it brings me the greatest peace and purpose. Thank you!

A lot of Americans don't realise that a huge amount of us Australians arrived on this continent with shackles on our ankles and as prisoners, and then used as slave labour. The trans-Atlantic slave trade had ended by the British Empire before the colonisation of Australia began, hence we had no slaves coming from Africa, and the powers that be decided to turn Britain's poorest into slaves by making any petty crime punishable by transportation. One of my ancestors stole sixpence worth of fabric, and was transported to hard labour in Australia for life.

Completely understand. First generation Haitian American here. I really want to make my mom proud because she's sacrificed so much for me. I know she wants to see me finish college, get a 9-5 that pays a lot, then settle down with a Haitian man and live nearby. But maaaaaann I'm so depressed and miserable. I'm not doing what I like at all and I have no idea who I am. I just want to finish school, live abroad, work, and write but it'll hurt her to not be near me. Plus I help her with my siblings and money. I feel so selfish but I'm itching to go.

I am a white Aussie and I know I cannot speak about a black person's experience here but I do know that Australia does treat everyone better. My sister has an African American boyfriend who lives in Australia and he is so much happier here as he has said he had been harassed by cops in the US too many times to count, but here he had to learn how different cops here are. He has been here for 5 years and hasn't ever had any issues with cops here. He hasn't experienced any racial hate either or any kind of gun violence as people in Australia don't really have guns.
He has children from a previous relationship and is so thankful that his kids can go to school safely here as we don't have any school shootings. He has free healthcare so does his kids.

The African in this video has QUICKLY figured out that once you step anywhere outside of America, you get exponentially better treatment in the world as an Black American/African-American than you do as an African, ESPECIALLY a Nigerian. So here she is, Black Americans, stealing your identity and USING it for her own personal benefit in Australia. She is only referring to herself in Australia as "African-American" in order to reap the advantage that come with being a Black American vs being an African, in pretty much EVERY country outside of the United states. And you all are just skinning and grinning along with her letting her play you all for fools! Trust and believe that she NEVER once referred to herself as an African-American when she lived in America. She made SURE that people knew she was Nigerian, at most she MIGHT have referred to herself as Nigerian-American. So now the Nigerian has transformed herself into an "Akata" (Remember? Their favorite black American slur). SMH. Shame on you all.

I find it interesting listening to ur story, about searching for something other than US work culture to build ur life around. I'm still confused by my family and friends because the only thing they want to talk about is work/career, and every conversation with strangers starts with "what work do u do" and it's so dry.

@Ulbre Dr Folie yes Austria is cold in winter, it's also in Europe, if that's a "typo error" and you meant Australia 🇦🇺 then yes, there are some areas which are cold and have snow in winter and others which are warm in winter, when I say warm, I mean like summer in some countries, generally it's sunny with crisp air and around 7°celcius at night and around 18-23°celcius during the day in winter in Perth Western Australia.

Do y’all have any recommendations? Genuinely asking. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated. I’ve between Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. Also, if y’all know the current state of the country I’d love to hear about it. I’m doing so much research before I relocate.
