- An impromtu visit to my buddy Matt's house and him showing me his purple martin setup. Excuse the wind noise, windy out in a field. You can see these are the Cadillac of houses. This is May 30th 21' and the busy nesting season here in Darlington, SC. Matt got me interested in the purple martins when I first saw his birds. He is also a master beekeeper.
So where is this Purple Martin house system made?
Cool video, found your channel researching purple martin houses. We're in SC too, opposite side of the state. Sub'd hopefully you can let us know how your setup is doing.
Nice Troyer vertical gourds with worm gear, snake's and raccoons can wipe that whole colony out. Did he get a predator guard.
No, not yet, but he's had birds for about 20 years and is familiar with predators. His backyard is basically a giant field and I don't think he's had any issues. But you're right, he probably should.
Hiw do raccoons get inside?
@Yellow-Larch raccoons can climb a metal pole, they eat babies, eggs' reaching into the entrance..an 12-inch aluminum wide baffle' 2 feet long will keep them off. It will keep snakes off also.
Are these nests protected from overheating ?
No, not really, and this is SC so it can be 100 degrees in summer.
Where do you get that set up ?
That's my friends and I think he got them at the Purple Martin conservation website. Seems like he paid about 1200.00 for each setup with the crankable pole and all the of the gourds. Steep but it's nice
