Hey VMT I have two questions i wanna ask you from a photographer myself. I'm relatively still new to photography but I know the basics of photography and the like. With that being said 1) What does EF and RF mean? 2) Would it be preferrable to get a mirrorless adapter given that i have a EOS 500D camera? I hope i get to hear from you soon. Great video too i learned alot from the differences between the EF and RF lenses!
I have mostly EF L glass and in my opinion, you're essentially throwing away money to buy the new stuff unless your someone making money from your photography and can see a need for a feature that the old glass lacks. There's plenty of studies where the new glass isn't optically any better than the EF counterpart.
The function ring is also available in the expensive version of the EF to RF adapter, and here its close to the body, so you dont hit the focus ring by mistake.
I can totally understand you, there's a learning curve to it, but I find it more aesthetically appealing, but the adapter is actually a great idea for someone who would prefer to have the function ring closer, and EF lenses do have their special look to them.
@@AlfieLW I do have the RF 24-70 f2.8 and I would say canon made a smart move by making the function ring feel different in terms of texture and the way it rotates, it also makes a click sound with every rotation, so IMO it’s almost impossible to accidentally interchange the focus ring with the function ring, I also hardly use manual focus and for me after a few days of using the lens, it just feels very natural for me.
@@AlfieLW Well there might be a slight difference in the colors, but not so much in quality. I did a comparison with my 90D and my R5 and they are both great cameras, but the R5 was sharper, was brighter and the colors were different, and to be honest I liked both of them. I don’t know if the difference in color is from the body or a combination of lens and sensor tbh.
For my needs the 24-104 f/4 is a winner for walk-a-bout's. That and the 16-35 f/2.8 is pretty much all I need. Sometimes the 70-300 f/3.5 to 5.6 is selected, but it's beast to lug around. No need to look at mirrorless right now as I mostly do stills and for video 1080/30 works just fine. I'm keeping the 5D IV until it wears out. Sorry, no more money to Canon for awhile. 😊
Dude for real I'm blown away by the lack of focus breathing on the RF lens!! Seriously that's all I was paying attention to after you mentioned that! Like, wow!!
Yes, it really makes a difference. I'm not sure if you take photos as well, but when you do photo stacking for macro shots, focus breathing is a REAL PROBLEM, because when you overlap the shots, some of them are more zoomed than the others.
@@VideoMakerTwist Yes I actually do that all the time. Mostly with rings for weddings/engagements so I use the 100mm macro, but I still do video stuff and it is just impressive!!
I know these are the same but for R bodies I’d get the RF28-70. I gave the EF24-70 adapted and it is fine but the 28-70 is special. I stopped using my primes in this range. Can’t say enough about this lens even at the price.
The RF version has huge focus breathing but it is compensated by software in camera only for video. Also the RF is not guite 70mm but somewhere 62mm or less in short distances because of the focus breathing in picture mode. Its also a dust and particle sucker. I'll keep my EF version. But thanks for your very good produced video. Cheers
Nice comparison. I missed with which camera were you comparing autofocus, but I'm almost certain that the delay is due to camera rather than the lens. I have an R6 and I have Auto Focus menu where I can tweak responsiveness and at the most sensitive setting the response is immediate, as soon as something enters the frame. Extremely useful for wildlife photography where you can be tracking a fast subject that pops into and out of frame, regardless of the lens. AF settings menu was the biggest and the most pleasant surprise when I went from my 90D to R6. I was like "HEY! THIS IS CHEATING!" So in video mode on R6 the menu is in AF, page 3, called Movie Servo AF track sens. "Sens." meaning sensitivity. Goes from -3 to +3 the latter being the most sensitive.
@@VideoMakerTwist I guess they upgraded some things then. Though, this feels like something that could be fixed for the R via a firmware upgrade, should Canon decide to do something actually useful and empowering with those instead of just fixing bugs. :D
It could be just a bit wider and I think there are 2 reasons for this: one of them is the fact that the glass inside is placed in different positions between the EF and RF versions. The second reason could be the fact that the RF doesn't have focus breathing and this could be achieved by croping in a bit to compensate the "zoom" effect. It's a personal opinion.
Another great comparison. I own both and still find this focal length zoom my go to more than 90% of the time. I just can’t let go of the EF version so it always sits on another body to grab and go, just in case. 😂 I also own the Fuji equivalent F2.8 zoom option for my XF mount bodies. For those who adapt lenses, the EF version also pairs very well with the Fuji GF medium format series. Just saying.
Excellent presentation. Exactly what I was looking for. As a person who left Canon for Sony A7 II and now tip toeing back to Canon for photography, this video speaks to me. Thanks!
I shoot a lot of video too, so I appreciate the extra latitude from the stabilization. That said, probably the best thing about the RF is what it is going to do to the price of the EF. Used EF 24-70 2.8 for sale $600. I like that!
One difference not mentioned: According to Canon, the aperture has only 1/2 stop steps for EF lenses and 1/3 stop steps for RF lenses, which leads to better results with videos.
I know this video is a little bit older but thanks for making it. I had ordered a refurbished rf 24-70 for black friday but it got cancelled a few hours afterwards. Im hoping theres another sale soon. Hopefully you didnt let the rude comments get to you, i really enjoyed the vid
Not really, I just tried to match exposure in camera, the sun light was constantly changing because of the clouds. There was a couple of minutes between the tests of both lenses.
Hi. You made a very clear comparison between the 2 lenses! However what caught my attention is when you said that in buying an EOS R, the adapter comes along free. I'm from the Philippines & when I asked a Canon Philippines camera shop about it, the free adapter was only a promo. How accurate is this? Or does Canon Philippines have different marketing strategies compared to others? Thanks!
Good point! Someone else mentioned this already. When I bought the EOS R, I got the adapter for free, but now they're charging for this. Like you said, it was offered as promo when they're first mirrorless system was released. Sorry for the wrong information from the video.
I had the RF version but it took a slight knock and the outer casing came away from the main body slightly and couldn’t be fixed. I went back to the EF version because of that and now realise that the build quality of the RF is far inferior and cheaper materials are used.
That is not a great story at all, sorry to hear that, because the RF is so expensive in my opinion. Sadly these days, many products are built with cheaper materials.
Just a question, as I am very green with photography. When testing eye tracking, have you found a difference when testing subjects with and without waring glasses?
The eye tracking performance depends on your camera as well. For example: Canon EOS R is not always so good at tracking someone's eye when wearing glasses, but a Canon R6 mark II does an excellent job at this. So it's about the camera capabilities also, and not just the lens.
I own the 24-70 2.8 II and its a true workhorse. As a photographer, I don’t think it makes sense to upgrade to the RF 24-70 2.8. The better choice for me will be the 2.0 which is what I plan to do when I can afford it.
The image quality is so close between the two, it just isn't worth the investment from a photographic point of view, so I agree with you. The EF version (which I own) seems to be softest at 50mm at 2.8. But I have the RF 50mm 1.2L which blows both 24-70 lenses out of the water for sharpness. I don't like the 24-70 in general for image quality when compared to primes. I'd much rather use my EF 35mm 1.4L II or my RF 85mm 1.2L.
@@VideoMakerTwist Just bought the lens online, and starting out, I"ll be primarily using this for video (for UA-cam). But I'm also I'm looking at getting back into wedding photography and this seems like a great lens for that as well. Then I could see adding the 50mm 1.2 and 70-200 2.8 and I think I'd be pretty well covered :D
This was nicely done. I had the EF 24-70 f2.8 II for many years paired with the Mark II. I loved that combo and got a lot really good pictures from it. I've only rented the new RF 24-70mm once and it seemed excellent. I did buy the RF 28-70mm f/2.0. It's a beast but there's something missing from the new mirrorless systems that the old Canon DSLRs had and I can't put my finger on it. Sometimes the visceral can eclipse the technical.
I feel the same !!! But then I feel it's ridiculous to want to go back to dslr considering I do professional photography and the mirrorless gives more assurance...
I plan to buy R6 II but the cost of these lens make me mad. New RF 24-70 is costlier than the R6 II camera body itself. So i m looking for a used EF 24-70 mark II. Why canon not allowing sigma or Tamron to make RF lenses😢
The RF 24-70 2.8 is actually cheaper than the R6 mk II (with $100 USD). On the other hand, I personally think Canon will accept third party lenses in the near future, otherwise they'll lose clients...
Nice video. Though you said that constant aperture is an advantage when you zoom in and out with video - because you don’t need to adjust exposure But wouldn’t most good modern hybrid cameras adjust the exposure (or use Auto ISO) - automatically?
Thanks! Yes, you're right, but when it comes to shooting video, the AUTO ISO isn't a good option at all if you want to level up to a more pro level. The exposure is adjusting constantly and when you will start editing the video, you will constantly have issues because of this. Same happens for white balance on video. For photos, setting the ISO on Auto, it's fine when the shutter speed and aperture are locked down.
Any videos possible comparing sharpness when adapting EF lenses to RF cameras? I am using a 24-70 F2.8 on a R5C and a EF 70-200 F2.8 III. With the 24-70 I get tack sharp images, almost to sharp. Banger lens. But when using the EF 70-200 2.8 III my images are 9 out of 10 times soft and blurry focus. Meanwhile I get super sharp photos on the 5D Mark II with the EF 70-200. Is that an adapting issue or are there any settings for that?
I wish I can help you with this, but the EF version of the lens was not mine, as I mention in the video. There should be no differences when adapting EF lenses. The only thing that makes a difference is the camera sensor. During the years there were a few lenses that were less sharp on some camera bodies.
Great video! Thank you! I am thinking about switching to Canon r6m2 from Sony, but Sigma 24-70/2.8 E-Mount is just 1100$. Probably will continue with Sony.
The narrative format of this video of this video doesn't make a lot of sense except of stretching out the video. The RF is the successor of the EF, besides the updated mount (diameter) it's the engineers giving the same requirements a new shot employing newer materials and technologies - hence we can expect the RF to be better than the EF. Whats left to ask - is the RF better than the EF in all respects? Significantly? Any aspects where the EF is actually better? done.
Next time I make a video I will ask you to approve it before publishing, just to make sure I don't stretch it out too much for your taste. Thanks for the critique! Done.
I just sold my EF 20-70mm f/2.8L II USM (and RF adapter) and bought the new summer 2024 RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM. At half the weight and two-thirds the length of my old 20-70, and at $1100 list it's a bargain. It's weather-sealed and has "L-quality optics" (which have gotten good reviews) but no red ring, lens hood or L designation - so I bought an aftermarket lens hood from JJC for about $15. I guess the low price disqualifies it from being called an L, so I twisted a pair of red twist ties onto a green rubber band and put it on the front of the lens barrel, saying "Joyous No L" !
As I own the RF 24-70 now, the RF 70-200 will be the next lens to buy. However, I would use the 24-70 much often than the 70-200. So if I would need to choose, I would go with the 24-70 because I can do the most things with it.
Thanks for the comparison. Quick question for you...did you notice any play in the zoom ring (back and forth) on the RF 24-70mm? Seems like there is a little slop in the mechanism when you change directions. Mine does that and it's a bit irritating since my RF 15-35mm is fine without any play.
I just tried what you said about the zoom ring. It doesn't do that in my case. I assume something got loosen inside. Sorry about that. Can you request a replacement?
@@VideoMakerTwist Love it. I follow F64, this channel and your main Cristi Kerekes channel. I'm also Romanian but I live in the UK. I will start UA-cam again This month after my new camera arrives, I'd love to keep in touch :) without being weird about it LOL

Great video! Just a small thing to let you know... you "borrow" a lens from a friend, your friend "lends" you a lens. NOT a complaint, just wanted to share
So what if the 'future' is mirrorless. DSLR's such as the 90D are fantastic. I think you've got a very boring life if you pixel peep. Use what you have, enjoy it. Why waste thousands because your photo 'might' be 3% better. It's just ridiculous to spend so much when you can take great photos with what you have. What happens when a new camera comes out 12 months later....? Just enjoy what you have and don't listen to people who tell you what you should get - you'll end up very disappointed.
I purchased the first version of 24-70 2.8L lens. There was a time in my life when I was shooting a lot. Then, I put my lens on the shelf. Last week, I photographed my nephew's concert and discovered that the zoom on my $1300 Canon prime lens got stuck at 28 mm and does not want to retract all the way back to 24 mm. I called Canon to figure out if they can fix it. Canon said this lens is not repairable because they do not make parts for it anymore. In other words, I wanted to correct your statement that Canon lens is a long term investment. It is not. It is a short term large expense and a long term useless piece of garbage. Canon does not stand behind its products. This is a prime lens, and Canon does not support it anymore. I could understand lack of support on a $400 lens. Prime lens is a different story. My lens is not repairable because Canon does not want to produce probably a 25 cent part that got worn out. Shame on Canon. Never again. Canon does not believe in its own products and subscribed to the ideology of planned obsolescence.
The first version was produced in 2002-2012 so more than 10 years min, why would canon still produce parts for this lens? It’s a zoom not a prime lens also. Unfortunately things do wear or seize over time, this doesn’t mean the quality is poor. At $1300 if it’s lasted you 10 years that’s only $130 a year😂. I have many older lenses and cameras that still work perfectly 20d, 50d, 5dmkiii, 1dx, 600mm f4 to name some. Most will not be repairable by canon, but you may find a camera repairer that has old parts that could fix it for you.
@@Hooliosis Because this is not a $150 lens. Therefore, they should produce parts for it. I am sure parts from other lenses fit, but Canon wants people to drop $2K-3K on a new lens. I guess you work for Canon based on your comments. Nice try. Never Canon again.
@@dawidca Nah mate I don’t work for Canon, just being realistic. Your talking about a lens that could be 21 years old and complaining that it no longer serviceable. Obviously you don’t run your own business or you’d go broke, or you work for Sony. If you do I’d like you to repair the $4k HD rec-900E video camera I bought in 1996, I got it out the other day to film something and it no longer works, I’ll never buy Sony again😂.
@@Hooliosis We are not talking about some totally outdated technology like your video camera. That Canon lens is still widely used by many photographers and is still compatible with new camera bodies released by Canon. Saying it is not reparable is a d..k move. Sorry, never Canon again.
@@dawidcaIt actually is outdated that’s why it’s not serviceable, just bacause people use it doesn’t mean it’s not old technology, it’s been 11 years since it was last produced. Maybe if you didn’t leave it lying around it may still work have you thought about that, rather than place all the blame on canon. Like I said earlier, you can always try get it repaired by a third party repairer, I know of one in Melbourne, they may even buy it off you if it’s unrepairable for parts. More your loss if you think any other camera brand will do better, I’m sure canon will miss your once in 20year purchase.

Yes, thanks for pointing that out, you're right, I'm not a native english speaker.
@@VideoMakerTwist your English is great, bro.
Hi
Can we use the RF version with T3i and with the adapter.
Thank you
nope, the adapter is EF lens to RF body. not the other way round
You may need to adjust your focus settings so it doesn't change the subject so quickly
You can adjust focus setting, how fast you want it to focus on the subject. it has nothing to do with the lens.
Thanks for your great comparison!! I keep my combo 24mm ef-s and 50mm. Very gd quality for the bung, portability.. the only downfall to change lenses
why not get a R6 mk2 or any body that have in body stabilization and get the EF version instead
Question most people have. Should I buy RF version if I already have EF version and I am advance hobbyist?
If you shoot video mostly, go with the RF!
Thank you. Very informative and well done.
That was a great comparison!
Good information understanding the knowledge of cameras in lens made a good point
I think what's missing and you can't put a finger on it anymore...is the mirror, hahah!
7:14 How come that EF has 1/400s at 2.8 and RF 1/200s? Is RF lens has lower T-stop?
Unfortunately, light was changing when I did the test so I had to adjust the shutter speed a bit.
@@VideoMakerTwist Thanks for the reply and for comparison video too) EF bokeh is kinda too busy. I wonder how did they fix it on RF lens.
Great video!
Very helpful thanks
Nice video.
Though you said that constant aperture is an advantage when you zoom in and out with video - because you don’t need to adjust exposure
But wouldn’t most good modern hybrid cameras adjust the exposure (or use Auto ISO) - automatically?
If yo made videos and work with manual focus like filmmakers, I think that the EF version is much better., what do you think ?
It depends on your budget, both lenses can shoot in manual focus, but the RF is limited to the new mirrorless system regarding the mounting.
Which camera , lens and mike you use for shooting UA-cam content?
Here is what I use:
Camera: amzn.to/3OMxa2I
Main lens: amzn.to/3z96i6S
Cheaper option for lens: amzn.to/3FbcxJr
Microphone: amzn.to/3b9qk9D
Did you do a comparison with RF 2.0 28 to 70 mm lense?
Not yet, but I would love to! I didn't have the chance to test it.
@@VideoMakerTwist How was it?
Very good review, algorithm☝️
Thanks, Adi!
I really want that RF lens. It's listed at $2,199 right now. Very tempting.
The ef is $1500
When using auto focusing does it make noise when video recording??
Both lenses are quiet, but the RF is completely silent.
@@VideoMakerTwist I'm little late to the show but how's RF is silent while focusing?
So what lens You used to record this video?
I used the Canon RF 35mm 1.8
Good content. Did anyone tell you that you look like Ari Melber from msnbc? Even the way you speak
Are you still using the R, or did you update to the R6?
Still using the R. My plan is to buy an R6 II, when I have the money. Maybe in 2023.
Done.
Although it is better for video, on a C70 the full frame RF lens will have a crop factor and will become a 38.4mm. Only this disadvantage!
Nice comparison video. Do you think the rf 24-70 f2.8 will work well at indoor college volleyball games? Thanks, FD
Yes, absolutely, if you stand a bit closer to the players during the game.
@@VideoMakerTwist Ok, what about the Canon RF 28 - 70 F2? Thanks, FD
Can I use the rf in a canon rebel t6i?
Unfortunately no. That is a DSLR and you need a mirrorless in order to be able to use RF lenses.
I like the bokeh of the new RF lens, for a 2.8 lens this could be a deciding factor
Would you choose RF 24-70 or the RF 70-200 2.8
As I own the RF 24-70 now, the RF 70-200 will be the next lens to buy. However, I would use the 24-70 much often than the 70-200. So if I would need to choose, I would go with the 24-70 because I can do the most things with it.
Great review and comparison. Thank you!
Thank you so much! Do you own one of these lenses? Tell me more :)
nice video !
Thank you! Cheers!
Qal lente esta usando pra gravar este seu video ?
I used Google Translate to understand what you're saying. I'm using the Canon RF 35mm f1.8.
Great Video 👏🏻💯
Thanks! 😃 What was the part that interested you the most?
@@VideoMakerTwist I liked the the focus breathing part and your reasoning on why you should get the new RF one instead of the old. Good point 👌
GOOD VIDEO! THANKS😊
Thanks for leaving feedback, it always helps!
Well done. Ill keep my Ef a bit longer
U didn't watch the whole vid. The IS version beats it
thxxx for sharing!
Cristi tu sigur esti roman ? 😅ai un accent extraordinar in engleza ❤
Sigur sigur! 😄 Mersi frumos, chiar apreciez!
OMG, I finally found a video which answered all my questions!
This is so nice to hear! What was your biggest question?
You are very honest.
Thanks, that's the point!
I’m so glad I switch to OM Systems. Smaller lighter faster. That RF it bigger and more expensive…
Lighter yes, faster no. Can't compare a apsc camera to full frame
Long term investment until they change the mount...I got so much EF glass there is no investment in cameras and cameras lens !!!
So what do you think about these two lenses? Be honest :)
I have both of these lenses, for me EF is much batter then RF, I can send you me tests!! if you want..
dont you just love it when manufacturers make new mounts and lenses that are not adaptable to any other mount?
Yep, it’s really really great!
I just bought a second hand EF 24-70 f2.8 II which looks like it’s brand new for 700 bucks. 😎
Aren't you the guy from F64 Romania? 😃
Bingo 😄Yes I am.
@@VideoMakerTwist Love it. I follow F64, this channel and your main Cristi Kerekes channel. I'm also Romanian but I live in the UK. I will start UA-cam again This month after my new camera arrives, I'd love to keep in touch :) without being weird about it LOL
у меня R5 и EF объектив - поэтому нет проблем со стабилизацией
Agree, but that is digital stabilization from the camera. The optical stabilization is much better because it doesn't create image distortion.
@@VideoMakerTwist если быть точнее, то IBIS (матричная) стабилизация в Canon R5 с объективом EF, а не просто электронная 😉

0:58 he says ....this is the US preses if you living in Europe Yau have to add import taxes???????????????????
you thing we import lenses from usa or what !? you okay ?same lens cheap in Switzerland and Switzerland one of the expensive country on the world !
how the hell you thing we do that !?!
Never said Europe imports from the US. :) But if you import a product from outside EU in a country which is in the European Union, you need to add at least the country's VAT, which could be different between countries.
The ef has better light transmission based on your comparative shot
Can you reply with the time stamp please just to make sure I watch the right sequence in the video?
6:30 to 7:30. All settings are the same except for shutter speed. Very interesting find.
can't believe the size of the RF. No need for me to upgrade tbh.
Wow the new version is better wow mindblown😂😂😂
Great video! Just a small thing to let you know... you "borrow" a lens from a friend, your friend "lends" you a lens. NOT a complaint, just wanted to share
Thanks for the tip, Michelle! Sorry, english is not my native language, but I really appreciate comments that help me learn these things. :)
Great
So what if the 'future' is mirrorless.
More creamy you say ? 🧐
EF is better in every aspect
Eres hispanoparlante o lusoparlante?
Buy a used 5d mark iv and ef 24-70 2.8 no one will know what camera you used at the end of your edited photos. Save money and thank me later.
Yeah, a good option for photography. It’s a bit different for video.
Na real a 24.70 ii é um lixo, Canon errou na construção e durabilidade da lente. Joguei fora uma por não aguentar consertar
